TOW SHOW PLANNING WELL UNDERWAY

Plans are well underway for the 2025 Tow Show taking place at our new exhibition venue, Stoneleigh Park, Coventry.

For our visitors planning to attend the show this year, just a dairy reminder of dates the 2025 event is taking place. Wednesday the 1st and Thursday the 2nd of October 2025.

As usual, free visitor entry and free visitor parking at Stoneleigh Park with the show opening at 9.30am and closing at 4.30pm on both days.

IVR AGM AND GALA DINNER 2025

Since 1987 the Bill Jackson Trophy commends professional excellence within the recovery industry. A pioneer of his trade in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s - Bill was the ﬁrst training instructor of tow truck and heavy recovery both in the UK and the USA.

The IVR are inviting entries from all vehicle recovery operators of any jobs that they wish to put forward for this prestigious award, which in 2024 was presented to Crouch Recovery.

The award celebrates a well-executed

recovery job, regardless of the size of job or the size of the company. This year, the Institute brings a guest of honour from across the Atlantic, the legendary Bruce Jackson, son of Bill Jackson, who will not only present the award during the evening Gala Dinner, but Bruce will also be part of the afternoon presentations that follow the formal business of the AGM, and the good news is all are welcome to attend.

To be considered for the award, vehicle recovery operators (large or small) are required to submit evidence

that showcases a successfully completed recovery job. All applications must show the recovery process and should demonstrate the degree of difﬁculty, the challenges faced, along with how they executed the recovery. Applications can be made to mail@theivrgroup.com and should include

AGALA DINNER FUNDRAISER CHARITIES ANNOUNCED

VRO Benevolent Fund (AVRO Ben) was set up by the founder members of AVRO, to help fellow recovery operators, their families and employees should they require any assistance. They provide what they call “ﬁrst aid help”, whether it be counselling, ﬁnancial support or hire of equipment, e.g. wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Recovery Industry Support Charity (RISC) was created to offer immediate assistance, to individuals, working within the Recovery Industry, their strength is immediate support, as soon as possible after an incident, which is often the most traumatic and distressing time for dependants and something other organisations cannot always do. Chris Hoare, IVR Chairman announced that he was thrilled to support the industry’s charities at this year’s Gala Dinner. MIDHURST ENGINEERING – KELLY’S HEROS

For a lot of IVR members the highlight of the year is the AGM and the evening celebrations, some would say celebrating what? It’s just another excuse to meet your industry buddies and have a good drink.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s a big part of the weekend, but also there are some really important, matters conducted at the AGM, and over the years there have been some fascinating presentations. Plus, there are a number of prestigious industry awards, the ﬁrst being the Bill Jackson award, presented during

the course of the day’s events, an award presented in the memory of Bill Jackson, it is awarded to the operator that submits a successful recovery, completed correctly, with a degree of difﬁculty, let’s say challenging. This is a highly competitive award, with some very good nominations and short listings.

Then there is the Jack Ovenden Award, named in memory of Nick Ovenden’s father Jack, the award goes to the best student of the year. The winner can be any age, they simply must be nominated by one of the IVR instructors,

having attended an IVR course, and come with a great attitude for learning and a real passion for recovery.

The process to short list the winner doesn’t end there, on the day of the AGM an awarding committee made up of IVR instructor volunteers, interview the short listed candidates and they make the ﬁnal decision on runners up and the overall winner, this is an award sponsored annually by the AA, the sponsorship pays for the cost of the trophies and the weekend costs for each candidate, a great award nomination to have on your CV.

The Gold Truck Award

The ﬁnal award and one of the most prestigious industry awards is the IVR Gold Truck Award, once upon a time this award was sponsored by Green Flag, however following the Green Flag network restructure back in, I think 2009 the award was removed from circulation.

Reintroduced by the Institute in 2022, it was awarded to the whole industry in recognition of how the industry handled itself during the pandemic. As always, the industry came with it’s can do attitude and many managed to continue working, with the help of their Key Worker cards, provided by the IVR and more importantly to stay in business in this once in a lifetime (hopefully) nightmare.

No speciﬁc criteria for the winner of this award, other than the quality of the individual, or company nominated, the work they do and how they represent the rescue and recovery industry, my understanding is the award will not necessarily be awarded every year, but only where it is felt that there is a substantial reason to award it in recognition.

Getting to the point, last year the IVR Gold Truck Award was presented, not to an individual but to a family, the Morgan family, better known as Midhurst Engineering.

The Morgan family have been involved with Midhurst Engineering for many years. Originally founded by John Poate, he sold his well-loved garage to the Visick family who ran the business for generations. Today Midhurst Engineering is known for providing reliable services and repairs, and for its well-established recovery business serving its local customers in West Sussex and the surrounding area and is now owned and managed by the Morgan family and has been for many years.

Brian Morgan, originally from Wales, moved to Midhurst where he met his wife, Suzi. It didn’t take long for Brian and Suzi to become a big part

of the local community and Midhurst town, and in particular the local church and its wider community.

Brian and Suzi had 3 sons, Guy, Mike, and Richard, all three have grown up around the workshop and recovery business Midhurst Engineering. Guy and Mike have always had active roles within the business, and now Brian has retired, between them they both run the business with Guy taking charge of the operational side and Mike looking after the administration and ﬁnances.

Guys son Jordan is now very active in the operation, particularly the heavy recovery side and Mike’s daughter Emily is equally active in the administration side. Guys partner, Marilyn, also has a day-to-day role within the business so it is very much a family concern.

Being part of the whole recovery industry and supporting the IVR is in the Morgan DNA, with all Midhurst staff having IVR training from day one and between them, they have completed most of the available IVR VR modules.

That support for the IVR is evident every year, notably they have attended every AGM event as far back as anyone can remember, even after Suzi passing away just before the AGM last year, there was still 3 generations of Morgan’s in attendance.

They give freely their time attending industry lead conferences and support whatever work is going on by both PROF, AVRO or the IVR and when it comes to charity, they are always the ﬁrst to donate, supporting RISC and the AVRO Benevolent Fund.

They clearly take the safety of their employees very seriously, most worthy of going on record is the fact that Midhurst Engineering have had an employee nominated and short listed nearly every year for the Jack Ovenden Award since its inception in 2007, a feat that no other company has achieved. effort that makes the company Midhurst Engineering one of the ﬁnest in the UK. Someone must be asking, why are we talking about last year’s winner of this prestigious award now only weeks before the 2025 AGM, ﬁrstly its good as a reminder to any member to hurry up and book your room, but truly, one of the charity auction items that’s always very popular is the front cover of the magazine and an edit produced by me.

Last year Steve Fitzgerald owner of Firstline Recovery, won the auction prize, but what was not publicised very well was a second prize was also auctioned, and it was purchased for the same hammer price by Eamon Kelly from KFG Ltd, most would use the cover opportunity to promote their company, but no not Eamon, he purchased the front cover auction item, simply to donate it to his friends and industry colleagues the Morgan Family, Midhurst Engineering, so that’s how come you’re reading this today. It was evident from the conversation I had with Eamon how respectful he was of the Morgan Family and how he considered them to be most deserved recipients of the award, he simply wanted it plastered over the cover of the Professional Magazine, what a generous and selﬂess donation.

I deﬁnitely don’t need to speak for the Morgan Family but thank you Eamon for your generosity at the AGM and your selﬂess donation to a very respected family, perhaps we could call them “Kelly’s Heros”, I am sure they will be thrilled and pleasantly surprised. Keep Safe.

THE RECOVERY INDUSTRY HUB AT AUTOMECHANIKA SPONSORED BY NWVA

So another mini adventure is on its way and the work began for me last year, when I had what drunks often refer to as a moment of clarity. Or maybe that was just me.

Automechanika is that new adventure and I can now announce who will be my fellow adventurers.

First a word regarding the Automechanika Recovery Hub main sponsor NWVA.

Over the last 18 months it feels like I have done nothing but thank NWVA for their support. But what can I say, they have been brilliant.

Every time, I go to Mick Jennings with a brilliant idea he listens intently goes away and comes back with full on support.

For a VRO to be the main sponsor of PROSE, is truly a remarkable commitment to our industries safety and our standards. I think it must have been the same type of connection as when Trump got together with Elon Musk. Yea I can just see your faces now!

Seriously though, on top of PROSE, NWVA will be the main sponsors of the Recovery Industry Hub at Automechanika 2025. That is some commitment from NWVA.

The growing support from a certain few work providers is part of the growing mechanism that is bringing the recovery industry closer together.

Green Flag and LV Britannia rescue have become so receptive to not just supporting PROF initiatives but also participating in them.

I believe that Green Flag and LV, will be a major attraction for VRO’s providing a great new opportunity for their networks to visit them at Europes biggest automotive exhibition.

Now I am starting to deal directly with the Automechanika executives I am starting to understand what a colossal event this really is. However I think they are pleasantly surprised with what the Recovery Industry Hub will be bringing to their party! And I haven’t really started yet! My head is spinning with ideas and proposals so you better start switching your phones off at night.

I wasn’t aware of the integral role training will be playing over the three days of Automechanika. So it’s a no brainier for the recovery industry to have representation from the recovery industries premier training body the excellent IVR.

IVR Chair Chris Hoare isn’t known for his spirit of adventure, but if you keep ringing him at 3am he will eventually come round in the end.

Actually TBH, I knew the IVR were keen to attend Automechanika, and I am keen to have them on board, as I believe that it’s important for other stakeholders in the automotive industry to gain an insight into our high standards and professionalism.

It’s important that the IVR should be the standard bearer for the recovery industry with regards to training on such an important platform. Hopefully the IVR AGM will provide a

very good opportunity for the IVR to promote Automechanika and the IVR’s participation at this major event.

National Highways will also be offering their support as custodians of the sector scheme it’s important

that the rest of the Automotive industry realise how vital the recovery industry is to the SRN.

Isuzu truck UK have always supported PROF and my association with them goes back over 20 years.

It’s important that the IVR should be the standard bearer for the recovery industry with regards to training on such an important platform.

Hopefully the IVR AGM will provide a very good opportunity for the IVR to promote Automechanika and the IVR’s participation at this major event.

USE A TORQUE WRENCH ON FLARE NUTS AND WIRED SENSORS WITH THIS ADAPTOR SET FROM LASER TOOLS

Laser Tools has just introduced their new Flare Nut Torque Adaptor Set (part number 8977), which is designed to enable the use of a 3/8” drive torque wrench to tighten a ﬂare nut or wired sensor to the correct torque.

If attempting to use a socket or flare-nut spanner, you normally cannot use a torque wrench on flare nuts or wired sensors — this set allows technicians to ensure proper torque settings are applied with ease. PROSE is now two years old this February and is now the established recovery industry safety and standards executive, recognised by both the DFT, Home ofﬁce and a growing number of local authorities.

NHSS/17b is still the ﬂagship recovery industry standard and PROSE continues to be an advocate for the sector scheme advocating for higher standards in training standards and safety.

We’re facing a growing responsibility to maintain the trajectory of the only industry safety executive. To maintain that trajectory, PROSE needs support from stakeholders, and particularly its main sponsor.

ONE YEAR ON – THE AA FLEET CELEBRATES HVO TRUCK TRIAL PROGRESS

As part of its award-winning, innovative “test and scale” approach to fleet decarbonisation, The AA has increased the number of vehicles included in its trial of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) from three to 15 to further test the viability of this alternative fuel to deal with roadside recovery demands in real-world settings. If the trial extension proves successful the number of vehicles will be further extended later this year to 27, meaning more than ten per cent of its flatbed recovery trucks will then be fuelled by HVO. With a varied operational fleet of over 3,000 vehicles, which make up 95% of the organisation’s scope 1 and 2 emissions, decarbonisation is critical to The AA achieving its net zero by 2035 target.

During the ﬁrst 12 months, The AA trial has used over 66,000 litres of HVO to fuel over 210,000 miles of driving. AA vehicles running on HVO have seen a 95% reduction in carbon emissions at the point of use, returning a saving of 165 tonnes of CO2e emissions when compared with same model diesel counterparts. Over the second year of testing, this ﬁgure could rise to over 700 tonnes if the vehicles added to the trial perform similarly. The vehicles

included have also delivered favourable results in terms of improved MPG.

In addition to emissions and fuel savings, The AA’s Fleet Engineering team are conﬁdent that there are other beneﬁts to be gained from the use of HVO, namely a reduction in maintenance costs due to a reduction in the number of DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regenerations required as HVO burns much cleaner than diesel.

One major benefit outside of the trial to measure emissions is the fact that there are no modification costs to diesel fleet owners, meaning fleets running on HVO that experience supply challenges could simply top up with diesel until suitable quantities of HVO are sourced.

With roadside assistance and recovery at its heart, The AA has complex vehicle needs, including speciﬁc towing requirements and many current EVs, particularly vans, don’t offer this capability. This has led the organisation to invest in a sectorleading programme of alternatively fuelled vehicle trials to establish what best meets their requirements, of which HVO trucks is one part.

Duncan Webb, AA’s head of ﬂeet, said: “Decarbonising is a business priority, and we’re committed

to reaching our 2035 net zero target, so ﬂeet innovation and exploration are key to this journey.

“Our HVO trial is just one part of a wider push to collaborate with manufacturers and suppliers to identify solutions that will meet the demands of roadside recovery as well as help to decarbonise our ﬂeet. Already, HVO is proving to be an important contributor to our decarbonising aims whilst achieving the high levels of performance out customers expect.

HVO is an innovative biofuel made from recycled vegetable oil that can be used in standard diesel engines. Since January 2024, The AA has had three fully operational trucks using HVO in Greater Manchester, operated in partnership with Certas Energy, utilising its HGV refuelling sites.

The increase in the number of vehicles involved in the HVO trial follows on from the recent announcement from The AA that it is embarking on its ﬁrst major trial of plug-in vans for roadside recovery. The organisation has added 15 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 15 PHEV Ford Transit Customs into its roadside service ﬂeet, which will be operational across the country. As part of the trial, all patrols will have home chargers installed supported by Rightcharge.

Hayden Savoury, from Maidstone, is moving into the fast lane after being crowned Recovery Patrol of the Year – The AA’s highest accolade for its recovery patrols across the UK – at the annual AA Award.

In his new role, 26 year old Hayden will spend the next 12 months as the public face of the company, representing the UK’s biggest motoring organisation within the motor industry and with the media.

The judging process began in September with nominations from across the UK, before three ﬁnalists were put through intensive technical and driving tests, panel interviews and mock radio interviews at The AA’s head ofﬁce in Basingstoke in November.

Hayden joined The AA after leaving a promising career as a Lift Engineer. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength by involving himself in numerous projects such as training his colleagues and mentoring new staff.

During this time, he has not been afraid to go above and beyond to assist others, whether members or colleagues. As part of his main role as Recovery Patrol, he recently showed steely determination when he attended ice cream trailer that was listing due to a sheared nearside wheel. Conscious of the valuable and perishable contents, Hayden combined his skills and innovative AA recovery equipment to load the trailer onto

his truck and recovered it back to its base before the creamy contents had time to defrost – he was rewarded for with a 99 Flake for his efforts!

Hayden says: “Just to be shortlisted for Recovery Patrol of the Year is one of the most rewarding things I have experienced in my time with The AA. I am proud to be part of such a trusted brand and enjoy helping members out of their breakdown situations. I really enjoy the challenges that each day brings, whether that involves helping our members, or my team colleagues. To win this award means the world to me and I can’t wait to ﬁnd out

RECOVERY OF HAWKER P.1121MACH 2.5 FIGHTER

Brookland Museum were offered a Hawker P1121 Airframe, and I was requested to help in getting it to Brooklands. Ably assisted by my good friend Mike Cowan, CMG were commissioned to do the transportation and the London Bus Museum, now owners of my AEC Militant ‘Milly’, agreed to loan her to me to help with the project.

Our ﬁrst problem was getting Milly to Northchapel in Surrey where the aircraft had been for a number of years in storage! It would be a lot of

hard work and even unfair getting the old girl there and back, but again my good friends at Midhurst Engineering offered to attend and load CMG.

So, on a cold damp morning in January the villages of Northchapel in leafy Surrey had the pleasure of seeing us arrive to collect it. The image shows how it was being stored and with the low roof beams we know it was going to be interesting using Midhurst Lorry loader Crane to do the lifts. However, with so many experienced VRO’s present each problem was solved in turn and the Wing, main Fuselage and Cockpit section were all soon loaded. The low loader can be seen leaving the compound and the later arriving at Brooklands where

enjoyed herself unloading them.

The Hawker P.1121 was a British supersonic ﬁghter aircraft design for Hawker Siddeley in the mid-1950s by Sir Sydney Camm. Initially funded as a private venture by Hawker Siddeley, However, shortly after the publication of Duncan Sandys MP’s infamous 1957 Defence White Paper, which called for guided missiles to replace manned ﬁghter aircraft, it was cancelled. Fortunately for the UK aircraft industry its sister aircraft the Kestrel was not, and of course the Kestrel ultimately became the incredible VTOL Hawker Harrier

Our Aircraft was a full-scale mock up and nearly all that remains of what arguable could have been a great replacement for the aging Hawker Hunter and a stop gap till the Harrier arrived.
