RECOVERY INDUSTRY REVIEW 2024

Welcome to the latest issue of Professional Recovery Magazine

Welcome to the latest issue of Professional Recovery Magazine. Congratulations to PROF and AVRO on their recent Recovery Industry Review, held at Hinckley. It was a great success with various presentations from industry figures, highlighting the great strides the industry has taken in the last 12 months. Derek Firminger reviews the event starting on page 8.

Following Richard’s announcement that PROF intend to exhibit at

Automechanika 2025, I’m also excited to add the Professional Recovery Magazine to the list of exhibitors. The magazine and Tow Show will be on the stand so look out for more news of the event in upcoming issues. Enjoy the magazine.

“The team is looking forward to working with the industry again in 2025 and continually supporting the vital work of companies in this sector.”

Working alongside PROSE, Kingfisher has

committed to raising safety standards, and has enjoyed being a part of the discussions that help highlight concerns and issues affecting everybody undertaking the essential work of keeping our road network safe.

It is the highest honour to be nominated for the award and an amazing achievement for the overall winner. The presentation takes pride of place at the IVR’s Gala Dinner.

The Bill Jackson Award

To be considered for the award, vehicle recovery operators (large or small) are required to submit documentation that showcases a completed recovery job, regardless of if heavy or light. All applications must show the recovery process from start to finish and should demonstrate the degree of difficulty and the challenges faced, along with how they executed the recovery.

Applications can be made to mail@ theivrgroup.com and should include photographic evidence, risk assessments, method statements or anything else that supported the operation.

RECOVERY INDUSTRY REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

When Richard said to me, what do you think about doing another conference, not a PROFCon, no a recovery industry review, an end of year celebration, a Christmas lunch on PROF, without hesitation I said absolutely a fantastic idea, we can highlight the achievements over the last 12 to 18 months and most importantly we can thank our sponsors, strategic partners and inform everyone

of what’s next for Richard and PROF.

During that time PROF had used Hinkley Island Hotel for the last two PROFCon’s, the location and conference facilities were perfect, so a no brainer to return the home of AVRO EX once again. Elements of the return to Hinkley turned out to be a bit of a disaster, from bad rooms, running out of wine and a bar that thought it was still under Covid restrictions and closed early and without

a call for last orders, not good, but I’m going to leave all those stories to Richard. So jumping forward to the morning of the 12th December a packed agenda to fit into just over two and a half hours, a format Richard prefers with a long morning session, compact and to the point not a long drawn out day, then rounded off with a complimentary lunch giving everyone plenty of time to get home, on this occasion some were

staying overnight to enjoy some social time with industry colleagues PROF sponsors and strategic partners, and a very good evening it was, all the hotel issues were ironed out as the managing director and general manager had a focusing session with Sir Richard Goddard.

Now at PROFCon 21 the inaugural event held at Brooklands, I had the privilege of presenting on the raft of issues the recovery industry was facing, from the growing EV challenges to low traffic neighbourhoods blighting the streets of London causing even more congestion and adding to the over polluted London air.

Since then, and again a privilege, I’ve hosted all these PROF events, so rarely do I get the opportunity to make my own contribution, so I decided to open the event and explain how in the last 12 months the newly formed PROTECT group came about, in doing so I was conscious not to step on the toes of Mick Puleston of AVRO because he was giving an update on PAS 43.

I went on to say, its well documented that PAS 43 and the industry Best Working Practice document are both out of date, they were both due a review in 2020, and here we are at the end of 2024 and still

His vision was for each member of this new group to have an equal share in the decision making and an equal share in the cost involved in the revision of PAS 43 and the revision of the
Safe Working Practice document “ “

no review or fresh publication. In fact, it’s so out of date it can only exist by name, because a large proportion of the scope within the document must also be out of date, and therefore sadly cannot be relied upon today as an accurate specification, yes specification and not standard.

We all know the first publication of PAS 43 was back in 2002, the past SURVIVE Executive Group had the responsibility on behalf of the recovery industry, to manage the updates, something they had always done, however the lack of updates since 2018 placed the recovery industry in a difficult place.

The SURVIVE Executive Group had gone quiet and stopped communicating to members of the Executive Group and had appointed a new chair, in the name

of WSP a commercial consultancy firm, this was done without any consultation. Then followed an attempt to resurrect the SURVIVE Group, something that received a lot of resistance from countless industry stakeholders.

While all this was going on, Richard was having one of his brainstorming moments and one of his 5-minute phone calls that takes up 2 hours of your time. He was suggesting to me that PROF should form a new group of industry stakeholders to look after PAS 43 and to remove SURVIVE, in Richard’s words SURVIVE hasn’t survived.

His vision was for each member of this new group to have an equal share in the decision making and an equal share in the cost involved in the revision of PAS 43 and the revision of the Safe Working Practice document, to work with the BSI and to take back ownership of PAS 43 and the Best Practice Guide.

Richard went on to say, “To begin with we will call it the Recovery Industry Safety Executive Bond (RISEB) bonding the group together, the group will manage the fundamental principles that underpin PAS 43, the recovery industry steering group will work with the BSI requirement for PAS 0: 2012 for both PAS 43 and the Recovery Industry Best Practice Guide.”

Anyway, I said, “Great idea, but you know the recovery industry, it’s impossible to achieve.” Impossible is not a word in Richard’s vocabulary, no he started to make his phone calls, he soon got the buy in, and to both our astonishment, Damon Jowett got the agreement of both the AA and the RAC to be part of it, another landmark industry moment.

It was now my job to draft the proposal, some 1500 words later and the draft proposal was distributed, and here we are a year later, the agreement is signed

the cost to revise PAS 43, over £80,000 has been split equally between all parties and named by the group PROTECT.

To be clear, PROF, Richard and I drafted the proposal, however this is no longer anything to do with PROF, neither of us are involved, nor do we sit on the

group. The SURVIVE Group is finished and the responsibility for both PAS 43 and the Recovery Industry Best Practice Guide sits firmly with the newly formed PROTECT Group, we are told to expect a revision of both documents in 2025, we all look forward to the fresh publication.

My introduction was over, and I handed over to Richard, he reiterated the accomplishment and wished the PROTECT group every success, he expressed his extreme gratitude to both Damon Jowett of Green Flag and Wayne Carey of National Highways for the work they have done, Damon for bringing the stakeholders together and National Highways for being an independent chair for the group, removing the commerciality and stopping any single influence having their own agenda, this is now back in the hands of the recovery industry, look after it and don’t mess it up!

Richard moved the discussion to his favourite subject the AA, never wanting to be controversial, Richard went on to show everyone the latest news from the AA and the Financial Services, as from 30th October the AA can no longer offer financial services.

Moving on, I would love to give a blow by blow of all the presenters, but unfortunately Greg has only

given me a 2000-word count, and I’ll be over that in any case, plus I’m sure you will all give up reading it anyway, so here’s a few headlines.

First up was James Hopkins, managing director of DMN Group, PROF’s main sponsor, James kept it as short as possible, but explained, DMN Group is a leading provider of services to the fleet industry with a joined-up approach. Providing driven and transported collection and delivery, fleet storage, in-life fleet management, preparation and defleet services all joined together by our team and bespoke web application.

Employing 200 trade plate drivers, operating 25 single and double car transporters, with a storage capacity of over 3,500 with 7 depots throughout the UK, as Proud to be a Sponsor of PROF I think a full edit at some point would be good.

Next up was Gary Grieve and Mick Puleston representing AVRO. Gary presented a snapshot of the data collected from their recent consultation on EV’s, data provided to the NPCC and the Home Office to aid the EV Stat Fee review.

Mick followed with some detail on the progress the newly formed PROTECT Group was making with regard to a revision to PAS 43 and the Best Practice Guide, he informed us that the revision cost for PAS 43, not including the BPG was just over £80,000 and the cost had been split amongst the group and had been paid by everyone, he will keep the industry informed with its progress.

Chris Keady Network Manager for LV Britannia Rescue provided an update on the network activities and how they will continue to work closely with the network. The Customer CSI scores were the best they have ever been,

Chris explained that this is fantastic because this is the customer’s voice.

Damon Jowett Network Manager for Green Flag, Damon presented in the second session, however his reflection on the last 12 months was similar to that of LV, with volumes down and service quality up, as always reported they are working closely with the network focusing on customer expectations, Damon explained that they have a distinct understanding of the staffing issues throughout the network and they are happy to work with their network. He also reflected of the company’s history, that is National Breakdown and still following the ethos of “Built on Partnerships”.

Ian Greenman PROSE Chairman, Ian gave an in-depth overview of the work it has been doing over the past 12 months, as a reminder PROSE Professional Recovery Operators Safety Executive (PROSE), an

executive group without a commercial agenda, a group where each executive member has safety and transparency as the cornerstone to each organisation.

The groups true focus is on the Industry Standard NHSS17/17B; however, it understands the need for PAS 43 as a specification, with that in mind PROSE fully supports the PROTECT Group.

A massive amount of work as gone into full engagement and liaison with DfT, Home Office and devolved administrations, spending countless hours on the introduction of red lamps and rollout of red lamp guidance / protocols, working with DfT for issuing of Vehicle Special Orders prior to legislation.

This has most definitely put the role and purpose of PROSE into the Recovery Industry’s DNA, with the growing influence of PROSE across the recovery industry.

PROSE is most grateful for the support

This has most definitely put the role and purpose of PROSE into the Recovery Industry’s DNA, with the growing influence of PROSE across the recovery industry “ “

provided by its inaugural sponsors Kingfisher Insurance Group, thank you Pauline, Mark and your teams, not only in its financial giving but also support at a number of external events, exhibitions and the constant use of the PROSE branding, thank you and look forward to other opportunities that may appear at a later date.

I guess a new era with a new sponsor, Nationwide Vehicle Assistance (NWVA), Mick along with his Managing Director Stephan are already talking to me and PROSE said Ian, their willingness to help and to be part of the administration is fantastic, they fully understand what the meaning of a “Sponsor” is and I’m looking forward to working with them, thanks Mick and the team.

Remember Sunflower Amy Ellis, Hidden Disabilities, some disabilities, conditions, or chronic illnesses are not immediately obvious to others. For some people, this can make it hard to understand and believe that someone, with a “non-visible” condition genuinely needs support. Some people question whether you have a disability because you don’t look ‘like you have a disability”.

That is why we created the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower www.hdsunflower. com - to encourage inclusivity,

acceptance and understanding.

Almost a year ago Richard reached out to Amy, the work she has done with PROSE is unamenable, Amy said, 2 conferences and the Tow Show, not to mention the video - please see the link below, plus collaboration with Apex Networks, soon you will be seeing the sunflower displayed on your job dispatch systems, thank you everyone for your unquestionable support.

A conference without The NPCC and the IVR wouldn’t be a conference, next up was Terry Hunt Chair of the NPCC Recovery Group, accompanied by both Mick Burke and Matt Wilkinson, both from the Met Police.

Terry gave another very good and in-depth overview of the work the NPCC has been doing with PROF, easiest way is to list it:

● October 2023 – EV Seminar–West London led by Accenture at a cost to the NPCC of c£25k

● February 2024 – Home Office PLEV Fire Taskforce – quarterly meeting

● March 2024 – Annual Police Vehicle Recovery Group (VRG) Conference

● March 2024 - Compiled EV recovery, storage and disposal guidance for police recovery schemes

● April 2024 – NPCC Roads

Policing Strategic Board

● May 2024 – Northern Ireland

Stat Fee Consultation – PSNI

● June 2024 – PROFCon

● September 2024 – Tow Show (NPCC Police Conference)

● October 2024 – Meeting with HO to discuss ASB crime and police vehicle retention and disposal

● October 2024 – Issued PLEV disposal guidance (WEEE Regs)

● November 2024 – DfT / OPSS MPS site visit

● November 2024 – NPCC / AVRO / PROF – discuss industry evidence for EV Stat Fee review

● December 2024 – PLEV storageConsultation University of Warwick / Warwick Engineering Group

● August 2024 – Submitted body of evidence to HO to support 2025 Stat Fee review.

I think you could say we have all been very busy, now this is for 2025.

● EV / PLEV specific recovery, storage and disposal guidance, legislation and charges

● 2025 statutory fee Review for E&W 7 NI statutory fee consultation response (pending)

● Engagement with Environment Agency (EA) to ensure consistent application of PLEV disposal requirements (WEEE permit & T11 requirements for PLEV disposals)

● Engagement with Environment Agency to ensure consistent waste consignment notice requirements for end of life vehicles & PLEVs

● Work with DfT / OPSS to create new police seizure, retention and

disposal powers and work towards a PLEV design / safety standard

● VR industry = Please ensure that when you sign a police contract whether its direct with the police or through a managing agent that it is commercially viable

Terry went on to say, what a pleasure it was receiving countless 5-minute calls from Richard, sorry did I say 5 minutes, I mean 50 minute, no Richard it’s a breath of fresh air working with you, your forward thinking and total commitment, we may not always agree, but that doesn’t matter, it’s a pleasure.

My final word, a huge thank you to Mick Burke and Matt Wilkinson who will be leaving soon. Their knowledge, expertise and sense of humour in what is an extremely complicated and legislative rich environment has been outstanding, without doubt they have enriched the relationship the NPCC, and the Met has with the recovery industry, you will both be hugely missed, thank you both.

Last up was the IVR and good old, reliable Mark Hartell. Mark provided a snapshot of the past 12 months and the red lamp journey, working alongside PROSE, the DfT, countless meetings, writing protocols and procedures, best practice, agreeing what should be in the training and then developing the training, and getting it the highest standard, all very challenging.

Mark then provided an overview of the

red lamp VSO requirements, all of which can be found on the PROSE website. Having taken the industry over 35 years to achieve red lamps there was a strong encouragement to the industry to not mess it up now, to follow DfT requirements by ensuring the correct training and VSO authorisation prior to using a red lamp.

The last words came from Richard, of course he thanked everyone, and special thanks to all sponsors, he also thanked AVRO for the work they have been doing together, a breath of fresh air, he also said PROTECT and PAS 43 are in your safe hands, don’t drop the ball.

What next for PROF, said Richard, PROFCon’s – done, Conferences –done, PROF is going roadside, he says, a date for your diary’s 3 – 5th June NEC Birmingham, Automechanika, we have a stand for the 3 days.

Prime position next to Snap On Tools, we will be joined by our Sponsors DMN and Nationwide Vehicle Assistance (NWVA), National Highways, Green Flag and LV Britannia Rescue, and the list might still grow.

Its time PROF and the Recovery Industry (yes I’ve capitalised this on purpose to emphasise the importance of our industry), connected to the rest of the automotive industry, we are the fourth

emergency service, and the manufacturers and dealer network cannot operate without us, as is becoming blatantly obvious…eh hmm… EVs. Its time to get close to the rest of the industry and to let

them see we are the Recovery Industry, not others who masquerade as us! Keep Safe.
Derek Firminger FIVR, MSOE MIRTE

The recovery industry has got a hell of a lot of history with the Hinckley Island Hotel.

Back in 1992, when AVRO EX changed from the Warwick Hilton, to the car parks surrounding Hinkley Island Hotel, Hinkley Island became the home of AVRO EX.

In 1993 it became apparent that the celebrated Bailey Toon partnership with AVRO was in-fact an elaborate scam. We got over it and a chosen few made millions from it while some didn’t!

In 1995, I did my first presentation at AVRO EX. I did a presentation on the economics of the recovery industry, which was supported completely by the now infamous, Industry Job Costing Module.

In 1996, the show organisers ran off owing Hinckley island £37,000.

In 1997, as the new AVRO EX organiser, I launched a treasure hunt for the missing money but alas it was never found, by my treasure map never stretched out all the way to Birmingham! But the show was a huge success and for the very first time actually made a profit. Two VRO’s from Ireland shared a £100 raffle ticket and won a recovery truck, while I got reported to the gambling commission. Who luckily are still as thick now as they were 30 years ago!

Fast forward to December 2023, on a whim I decided to hold a joint EV Seminar with AVRO. In June 24 again with AVRO, we hosted PROFCon 24. Both events were a tremendous success. However, it is astounding how a hotel

EXCITING YEAR AND A GREAT END TO 2024

like Hinckley Island can deteriorate into an amazing total decline.

I have never been so utterly sick with nerves, on the eve of this year’s review.

Three times during the night I began to go downstairs to confront the fraud masquerading as the night manager as to WTF, was going on. Thankfully common sense prevailed as I realised that a confrontation could leave the event in tatters along with the reputation of PROF. I could end up in the boob waiting for Terry to bail me out. Being cast as a dictator doesn’t mean I can openly act like one. Although I am the President, I am not President Putin.

So I researched the real General Manager at Leonardo Hotels and I rang him at 4am for a chat. Surprisingly enough there was no answer. However, he had received all three of my emails and amazingly, as demanded, was waiting patiently for me with the events manager by the entrance.

I asked them to follow me into breakfast, where I could get some coffee and he could meet some very irate hotel guests.

Mac Hobbs, who is used to the luxury of his camper van was the first to confront. Followed by John Coupland, also used to the luxuries afforded to him by sharing Macs camper.

Mark Hartel filmed the state of his disgraceful room as did the other seven occupants sharing his room and it’s now available on the IVR website as VR Module 25, 001.

I informed Daniel, the General Manager, of the numerous difficulties we had all endured. No wine in the restaurant, poor Corrine had to be sedated.

The chef’s special was only special because there was no gravy and it came with rice pudding.

The icing on the cake came after 45 minutes trying to check in at 11 30pm. When I entered my room, it was already occupied. And not by the person I had ordered!

When I returned to reception, I was told that someone had used my identity to get my room. But when I asked him my name, he couldn’t tell me.

I began thinking this was reality TV, and Edmund King was the producer.

Then the real occupant of the room I’d just entered, came out screaming that he

couldn’t get into his room. His key didn’t work. Well, it wouldn’t would it, I had it.

All this was going on along with six hotel residents complaining the bar had shut early without warning.

I slowly, calmly and clinically explained this all to Daniel word for word. Believe it or not he knew and agreed everything I said that happened had happened. He had been there since 6.30am after receiving my emails.

He explained calmly and truthfully that Hinckley Island had major problems and he had been sent there two weeks ago to sort the place out, but hadn’t realised the magnitude of his task. The place was a mess.

I appreciated his truthful cander, but then explained with my own honesty that if I wanted hard luck stories, I’d watch EastEnders!

I work in an industry where customer expectation is beyond reasonable. That in a society where after years of paying tax and national insurance if you’re ill you can’t see a GP or get a vital operation. If you’re being robbed you can’t call a policeman. You pay thousands in water rates, but you can’t drink it, shower in it or swim in it.

But you can’t leave a member at home waiting for longer than an hour without there being a consequence and an apology in triplicate!

Basically, if he was having problems, write to Claire Rayner, I want my problems sorted out today! I honestly said this, I said you demanded £7K paid in full up front and now you can’t deliver what I’ve paid for. You should paint the hotel yellow and sell memberships. These comments went over his head, and I must have seemed delirious from lack of sleep.

Sue, my trusty PA, was leaving the breakfast room and I asked her to independently explain exactly what an absolute horror I could be. She concurred immediately and walked off laughing.

Suffice to say whatever the reason, however he accomplished it, Daniel completely turned absolutely everything around and we had a good conference, a lovely Christmas lunch, and dinner was a relaxed boozy triumph.

Really enjoyable and finally I could relax. Why am I relaying all of this to

you now? It’s because this industry is under the microscope 24/7.

We are held accountable, responsible, for every mistake, time delay, vehicle damage, everything we do! And sorry doesn’t cut it.

Our lives and our livelihoods are held in the balance on a daily basis and we don’t get away with a simple sorry.

The work that goes into PROFCons, conferences, lunches and dinners is immense! The support I get from Derek, Sue, Paul, sponsors and stakeholders is massive. Then on a whim all the hard work preparation and support can all be for nothing, because many commercial entities do not have to be as professional as the recovery industry.

Was it all worth it, I hope so.

Over the years the recovery industry has had little or nothing to celebrate or look back on. Well, we have this year.

The Christmas before last I came up with PROSE.

Last Christmas I came up with the Proposal that has now become PROTECT.

This industry is on the precipice of totally uniting under a banner of standards.

However, although the brilliant concept of PROTECT was my personal brainchild, it would never have come together without Derek’s technical contribution.

Damon Jowett’s pragmatic intervention of bringing the AA and RAC, to the table and the brilliant determination and diplomacy of Wayne Carey.

National Highways who have overseen and chaired the group into a united safety group who have now all agreed to fund and resurrect PAS43 and best practice as a united professional entity.

not least with the recent statutory fee increases, and together with us next year’s Home Office Review which is due in 2025.

We have all put the hours in to deliver next year’s increase, but Matt in particular has always gone the extra yards on Stat Fees not just here, but since I contacted him regarding the Northern Ireland stat fee, Matt has been relentless in pursuing an outcome.

The recovery industry is not just losing the input of these dedicated professionals, we are now losing two valued colleagues. Thank you Matt, thank you Mick. We owe you.

A new and integral part of the review concept was the contributions of our valued work providers Green Flag and LV= Britannia Rescue. A big thank you to Damon Jowett And Chris Keady. Both were very receptive to my invitation to review and give updates on Green Flag and LV, and did not let us down. Both presentations were interesting, informative and professionally presented.

A united recovery industry is nothing without our independent work providers, and I look forward to working with them both on Automechanika next year. And I promise to keep the phone calls down to the minimum, but I might need to reverse the charges.

filled the void abandoned by SURVIVE, and are working together with DfT and Home Office and of course are an integral part of the roll out of red lights, as demonstrated by Mark Hartell in his presentation delivered as always with professional efficiency and an interpreter.

PROSE will now be sponsored by NWVA, who have become massive supporters and contributors to the professional safety and standards of the recovery industry. Thank you Mick. I look forward to watching you and Ian Greenman working together and raising standards.

A big, big thank you to Kingfisher for their past support and contributions. I’m hopeful that can continue in another capacity in the future.

Eight months ago I’d never heard of DMN. Five months ago DMN became PROF’s main sponsor, James Hopskiss opened proceedings with a presentation from our sponsor which gave a good insight into the services they provide. I am really excited with their proactive vision and their appetite to work with the vehicle recovery industry. Believe me when I say DMN has a lot to offer this industry and I am pleased they will be working with and supporting PROF.

A big, big thank you to Kingfisher for their past support and contributions. I’m hopeful that can continue in another capacity in the future. “ “

Whilst it’s easy to take credit, I think the PROTECT group itself now deserves its own credit for sticking with it and coming to a credible financial agreement.

In my humble opinion, PROTECT now has custody of the ball and should be allowed to run with it independently. Our work is done, and the impossible has become possible and a reality.

Good luck and I look forward to finally having PAS43 back in the midst of the independent VRO and AVRO who I believe will now take the lead on PAS43 as it should be.

The input over the last three years from the NPCC, cannot be overstated. Again, this year they are playing a pivotal role in all aspects of road policing and advice on police contracts. We all know the great work being done by the NPCC and its chair Terry Hunt, who has been ably supported by Matt Wilkinson and Mick Burke. So it saddens me greatly that both Matt and Mick will be leaving the Met next January. They have both made a colossal contribution to this recovery industry,

So was it a success? Was it worth the grief, the stress, the sleepless nights. Your actions as VRO’s will be the ultimate judge and jury. For me, it was, and I hope the batton has now truly being passed over from PROF.

I did highlight that VRO’s need to be doubly diligent regarding, some motoring organisations work providers financial credibility.

It cannot hurt just to simply ask the question. Is this work provider fit and proper to be controlling millions of pounds worth of credit and who is underwriting your risk! Who remembers the Bells Recovery collapse and the impact it had on VROs. It’s just a heads up. Just be careful.

We are a united industry, all the pieces are in now place to move forward on Stat Fees next year. PAS43 is back in the hands of the industry supported by our work providers which is exciting news, and bodes well for the future of us all.

Our trade associations are working productively with our police and on PROTECT.

PROSE is now an integral safety and standards executive and has comfortably

So my or our work is done now and I could not be happier with the results.

Now a new challenge beckons, and I cannot wait!

AUTOMECHANIKA is a new exciting challenge, and PROF is at the forefront. To boldly go where this industry has never gone before!

The PROF Enterprise has already been joined on the bridge by Green Flag, LV= Britannia Rescue, National Highways and now the Professional Recovery Magazine. We will be creating a recovery industry hub and taking it into the automotive arena.

I’ve already had so many enquiries about being part of Automechanika.

The best thing I can say is in whatever capacity you work in, make sure you visit Automechanika in June. We will make it worthwhile to visit a major automotive event because your industry will be represented and you’ll have a reason to be there.

Look on the PROF website for continued news and updates, Andy Lambert will be working overtime on Automechanika.

Merry Christmas to all, thank you. Minimise your risks - maximise your profits. Stay safe.

LOOK!! NOTHING MUCH HAS CHANGED IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS

We have all looked for a long time for a figurehead for our industry and up until now we have had no success. It is quite simple; we have been looking in the wrong place. As Christmas comes and goes the best brains have met about coercing us to spend and waste as much money as possible. Their big budget approach has to be right and, more importantly, has to be headed up by someone that everyone respects. The campaign that has impressed me the most and having been used for two or three seasons (it must work!), is the ALDI Christmas package which is suitably headed up by Kevin the Carrot.

It has now become obvious to me that our industry needs to be headed up by a selection of fresh vegetables and a meeting could be imagined as follows.

We can take firstly our own private recovery sector which could be

represented by Trevor the Turnip; Trevor being robust and able to withstand a hard winter. If we then make every effort to keep the colours right, the AA could be adequately represented by Bernard the Banana; in fact, we could invite a whole bunch. The RAC with their bright orange could call on the services of Kevin the Carrot’s brother, Claude the Carrot – after all he would be representing an awful lot of vans. Green Flag would be represented by Charles the Cabbage. It was important that we invited National Highways to the meeting and, to avoid showing up red-faced, they are represented by Bartholomew the Beetroot.

Some of the smaller work providers were pleased to be invited to this proportional representation meeting and had submitted representatives on a smaller scale – Percy the Pea, Gary the Green Bean and Roland the Radish. In order to give the meeting full authority, Plod the Pumpkin represented the Police with all their

Fred Henderson Breakdown Doctor

contractors. The sad thing about Plod the Pumpkin is that he shows a very hard shell but is very soft on the inside. He remained on his guard at all times during the meeting in case someone turned him into a lantern!

Russell the Brussell had found his way to the meeting and felt he needed to represent the

European Union despite Brexit and him being a remoner.

PROF were latecomers and had slipped under the radar where they were presented by an unidentified vegetable. Further investigation revealed this to be a Leek, normally more associated with a cloth cap and whippet. Leonardo the Leek had arrived straight from an awards night where he had finished second in class for organic produce.

The meeting needed to be chaired and the obvious choice was Owen the Onion who, if nothing else, could add flavour to the meeting. Before the meeting started the Chairman, Owen the Onion, passed round a salt cellar to give the meeting a bit of seasoning. This didn’t sit well with Bernard the Banana as he cried out for sugar. It was important the meeting made a start before things started to dry up so Owen peeled off with his pet subject as to whether everyone should work with pounds or kilos!

Once the meeting opened the first subject on the agenda was the increased practice of vegetable fields being grown without a hedgerow or border around the side, meaning that the crop was grown right up to the side of the hedgerow (the so-called ‘smart’ hedgerow).

Leonardo the Leak dived in suggested separate turning points at the end of the hedgerow, one every 30 metres.

Terence the Turnip

stated this was another useless idea that would do nothing to help his members. Terence also reported that many of his colleagues had been crushed by machinery and urged all members to encourage the return of the safe border. Bartholomew the Beetroot, who should be a prime mover in this sort of thing, couldn’t see anything wrong with a few fatalities in the interest of greater efficiency. After all he had been raised on an allotment. Terence the Turnip then reinforced the point that his members did not want to be planted in a field without safe borders. (Correspondence had also been received from other unspecified vegetables that had been damaged by machinery).

The discussions moved to how better use could be made of the daylight hours which caused an intervention from Morris the Mushroom and Ronnie the Rhubarb both representing AVRO. They reminded all that this is a 24-hour job and the dark is the time to develop and grow; Morris the Mushroom confirmed conditions had never been better and he was knee deep in it. Bernard the Banana thanked the pair for their efforts keeping his business going while the rest of his bunch was in limbo.

At one point an anonymous potato turned up claiming more regulation was required as some vegetables are being

planted too deep and too far apart, while others are too close together. Chairman Onion dismissed the idea, as nobody wanted to be dug up and moved and, in any case, those with wider spacing received more nourishment. Banana confirmed that they remain in-house, greenhouse!

Discussion took place about the recent appearance of Fat Hen, a progressive weed that was eroding everyone’s yield and profit. It was felt that poor yield was often the responsibility of the grower and not the Committee.

Charles the Cabbage reported a bad experience on being transported on a stow and tow which resulted in some of his leaves becoming bruised. Terence the Turnip kept reinforcing the need to get more meat on the table which was almost unanimously agreed but Bernard the Banana felt unsettled “again” because it wouldn’t suit his palate. Bartholomew the Beetroot rustled his green leaves in approval as he already receives a large percentage and his plate would be overflowing.

As the meeting drew to a close everyone shook roots, which left Bernard the Banana disappointed ‘again’ as he only had a stump and Percy the Pea had somehow rolled away. As the gathering dispersed, it was unanimously decided that no less progress had been made than in the previous couple of years and much more than the grown-ups.

Happy New Year

Situated just outside Coventry, Stoneleigh Park is the perfect venue for the future of the number one event in the recovery industry.

With plenty of indoor space plus options for exhibiting outside, we’re excited that the contract has now been signed, with Stoneleigh becoming the home to the Tow Show for 2025 and beyond. More information on next year’s show will be included in future issues, but we are planning tours of the new venue for existing and new exhibitors.

INDUSTRY LEADERS RALLY BEHIND NOT-FOR-PROFIT ‘MOTORVATE’

AT AUTOMECHANIKA BIRMINGHAM

Messe Frankfurt UK, the team behind Automechanika Birmingham, has unveiled the headline sponsors and launch partners for ‘Motorvate’, the not-for-profit, pioneering Automotive Careers, Skills and Recruitment initiative, running alongside Automechanika Birmingham in June 2025. Joining forces to tackle the industry’s talent and skills crisis are Toyota GB, European Tyre Enterprise Limited (ETEL, including Kwik Fit), LKQ Euro Car Parts, Autotech Group and the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Additional support comes from Silver Sponsor Castrol Race part of Certas Group, and Supporting Partners Hella, Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF), School of Thought and National Body Repair Association (NBRA).

With the IMI forecasting a sector shortfall of 160,000 by 2031 – including the urgent need for 45,800 additional technicians –Motorvate represents a united industry push to inspire the next generation and build a sustainable talent pipeline.

One of Motorvate’s key ambassadors is Gavin White, whose extensive industry experience and passion make him ideal for driving this initiative. As the founder of Autotech Group and a long-standing advocate for the automotive sector, Gavin was recently honoured with the IMI’s Outstanding Contribution to the Motor Industry award and named an Honorary Life Member of the NTDA.

He commented: “Without a shadow of a doubt, I believe the opportunity presented by Motorvate is the platform the industry has desperately needed. We have a window of opportunity now to raise this beyond boardroom discussions and insular industry conversations, to pull together and attract, train and retain the talent on offer to us. Anyone serious about this cause needs to support it.”

Carolyn Bundey from Toyota GB added: “Motorvate offers a unique platform to showcase the career pathways across all roles in our dealerships, from technicians, data and marketing roles to customer consultants – the possibilities are endless.”

Meanwhile, Simon King, CEO of Autotech Group, said: “Supporting Motorvate aligns perfectly with our mission to enhance awareness, attract new talent and foster the retention of skilled professionals. Autotech Group is excited to amplify the dialogue around these challenges at Motorvate and promote solutions that will drive the future of the industry forward.”

School of Thought has been working with schools and colleges to promote automotive careers, with Dave Reece, founder, commenting: “Motorvate is a great new programme to drive the message across the industry, get as many companies involved as possible and address the Generation Gap and skills shortage. We are very excited to be involved with Motorvate and are looking forward to Automechanika 2025.”

With Motorvate gaining momentum through the backing of industry heavyweights, Messe Frankfurt UK is calling on more businesses to join this essential not-for-profit initiative. By supporting Motorvate, organisations can actively contribute to addressing the skills and talent crisis that threatens the future of the automotive sector.

Motorvate and Automechanika Birmingham will take place at the Birmingham NEC from 3rd - 5th June 2025 in Hall 17. For more information about supporting the initiative and information regarding sponsoring and exhibiting opportunities, please visit here or contact Liam Bryant at Liam.Bryant@uk.messefrankfurt. com, T: +44 (0)1483 483984.

To allow for effective planning and preparation Automechanika Birmingham is urging those looking to support ‘Motorvate’ to express interest before December 20th 2024.

FOUR NEW CREW CABS FOR CF MOTORING

Rounding off 2024, and adding to the years earlier fleet replacement, we at J&J Conversions were delighted to hand over four new 14T Volvo FL Crew Cabs to CF Motoring Services Ltd

The Volvo’s longer 5900mm wheelbase and 14T GVW lends itself perfectly to our Heavy Duty – 5 T , F1, Low approach slide bed with second car lift and makes for a spectacular, robust, reliable and versatile vehicle.

Having never purchased our HD F1 before, we were eager to hear CF’s feedback – and it was ‘bang on’, We are of course over the moon, but not surprised that they are very impressed. The F1 Frames are individually manufactured in house and sent for galvanising before final fit using our own extrusion of heavy-duty aluminium. The bigger beds are rated at 5T and we use twin hydraulic motors with automatic hydraulic brake. By using only quality materials and designing our products for minimum maintenance we try to ensure our customers benefit from maximum whole vehicle life and a higher residual value. With 4 sites across the Northeast, CF Motoring Services

are one of the largest independent operators. Their services include an accident repair centre, 24 Hour Recovery Service, Accident management and a training academy. All in all, CF offer a ‘one stop shop’.

We would very much like to thank Billy and the team at CF for once again entrusting their business to us.

In this face paced, impersonal and very digitalised world we do genuinely value each and every customer and would sincerely like to wish everybody a very Happy Festive season. We are closed for the Christmas week – give those guys in the workshop a chance to switch off and re-energise . . . cos we are straight back in 2025 to a full order book.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: MAKE YOUR PITS SAFER WITH GRIPCLAD!

Safety first! As an employer, keeping the workplace safe isn’t just a box to tick—it’s your responsibility. You probably think you’ve done all the checks, but have you really? Inspection pits in workshops are sneaky hazards—despite being below ground, a tumble into one is classed as a ‘fall from height.’ Who knew?

The Health and Safety Executive reports over 7,000 injuries and 33 fatalities in motor repair in the past five years, with 20% stemming from slips and trips. Now imagine the awkward meeting with HR after an avoidable accident.

Wooden Planks: The Old-School Hazard

Traditionally, pits have been covered with wooden planks. Great idea… until they absorb every spill in the workshop, rot faster than you’d like, and turn into a hazard themselves. Time for an upgrade!

GripClad GRP Grating Covers: The Smart Safety Solution

GripClad has anti-slip safety covered and perfect for turning your pit from perilous to practical.

Why GRP Grating Covers?

● Easy Fit, Customised for You: Designed to match your current pit dimensions, they’re simple to install—just fit, place, and voilà.

● Walk This Way: With an embedded anti-slip surface, these covers are safe to walk on. No slips, no trips.

● Light but Mighty: Stronger and lighter than traditional options, they’re a breeze to remove and store. No backaches here.

● Corrosion-Free, Worry-Free: Resistant to salts, acids, chemicals, and general wear-and-tear, these covers outlast steel without warping.

● Low Maintenance, High Visibility: Cleaning is a doddle, and with bold colours like yellow, green, or grey, they’re a visible reminder to stay safe.

Safety and Peace of Mind

GripClad GRP Grating Covers make your workshop safer, smarter, and ready for anything. Don’t wait for an accident to happen—be proactive and make your workplace the safest it’s ever been.

Call GripClad at 023 8040 6796 or visit gripclad.co.uk/applications/garage-inspection-pit/. Safe pits, happy staff!

SIMPLY BRANDS WIPER BLADES TRIUMPH IN THEIR FIRST TEST WITH AUTO

Leading supplier of auto accessories and private labelling manufacturer, Simply Brands, has had its new range of wiper blades tested by Auto Express, gaining 4.5 stars!

The blades were awarded 4.5 out of five stars from the prestigious magazine, with the piece stating: “We were pleasantly surprised with the Simply’s performance, too. Even when taken straight out of our test freezer, they were free of judders and smears, clearing the screen evenly. The blades were also quiet, with no wind whistle at speed. Factor in the competitive price, and they could go straight to the top of the class.”

The Simply Brands wiper blade range was developed and tested in the UK over a nine month period. It consists of both multi-fit flat blades and traditional conventional blades, which will cover the vast majority of the car parc.

The multi-fit flat blade offering will cover 98% of the car parc and consists of 15 SKUs with eight original equipment (OE) fit adaptors that cover the 10 most popular OE arm types. This will include a retro fit hook adaptor to upgrade older vehicles to the latest flat blade technology.

The conventional blade range has 11 SKUs in lengths 280mm –700mm, and all are a metal vented frame design with a universal pre-attached adaptor to fit all hook wiper arms, as well as a legacy side pin and 7mm bayonet wiper arms.

Simply Brands also has a rear wiper blade programme to give allround clear vision for drivers. Replacing both integral plastic, as well as flat rear blades, the Simply programme offers like-for-like styling with the OE wiper blade as these blades offer the discreet styling and premium technology that the vehicle had when it was new.

These rear blades complement the front wiper blades, which

cover 98% of the car parc and consists of 15 SKUs with eight OE fit adaptors that cover the 10 most popular OE arm types.

Business Development Manager at Simply Brands, Sam Robinson, said: “If your products are being tested by Auto Express, you need to be confident that the product is going to do well, but we didn’t have many concerns after putting this range of wiper blades through various tests over a long period of time to ensure its quality and durability.

“We’re extremely pleased with the feedback from Auto Express, which is echoed throughout the marketplace, as these blades continue to be a popular choice for factors and retailers, as well as drivers.”
