Never too late AS SHE REDISCOVERS HER APPETITE FOR ADVENTURE AND OPPORTUNITY, WRITER ANGELA ZAHER FINDS THAT YOUTH IS JUST THE STARTER…

A

s I raised my glass to celebrate my 49th birthday on 11 March 2021, at home with my husband and two children, I was buzzing with excitement on the inside. I felt like I was on the cusp of a new era in my life. I was finally finding my ‘element’ – that magical place where the things you love to do, and the things you’re good at doing, come together. Earlier that strange day (we were still in the middle of yet another lockdown) I had received an email from the editor of a digital magazine called Marmalade & Kindness. She liked the article I had submitted to her about how cooking had helped me and my family through lockdown, she wrote, and wanted to publish it on her website. I couldn’t believe that anyone would ever be interested in reading what I had written, let alone publish it. The confidence boost of that first publication propelled me to email another magazine editor – and then another. In the two years since, I’ve been published in multiple other publications, including Platinum, Delicious, gal-dem and The Brussels Times. My short story, Love, Loss & Recipes, was selected to appear in the literary magazine The Other Side Of Hope and nominated for a Best of the Net award. I am a member of the Guild Of Food Writers. And, at 51 years old, I feel more charged and vibrant than ever. The springboard to this new career was a conversation I had with my husband on New Year’s Day 2021. He told me that he had read an article in the papers about someone who had been trying to get published for years with little success and then took a creative writing course. I had been thinking of doing such a course for a while, but always found good excuses why not to. The classes were too far away, and held on a weekday 7–9pm. Those hours were incompatible with family life. There was homework to supervise for my two 80 PLATINUM
