What CAFOs create in addition to animal by-products are environmental, human and unknown future damages. Projects such as MVRDV’s Pig City started to explore the idea of placing pigs in human settings. Step by step we have organized nature for our personal gain. From meat to milk society has created large systems that have strive toward optimization in production to feed the ever growing demand and consumption. If CAFO’s continue to trend from the past, to present and now probable future, our meat production will continue to be that of compactness, efficiency and disengagement from animals as a living organism and more as a cog in a machine.

ANIMAL LAND HEALTH EROSION

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are defined by the EPA as farms with a certain number of animals that are confined for more than 45 days during a growing season in an area that does not produce vegetation. These operations are growing at an alarming rate as traditional family farms are being pushed out of the picture.

The world’s population is increasing at an alarming rate. One of the most difficult problems that arises is the strain it has created on the environment to produce enough food. To battle widespread hunger we are trying to optimize how we create, transfer and consume our food. We have gradually created a system of organized nature to better suit our needs, affecting everything from biologically modifying feed to molding the legal landscape that industries depend on for support.

deReconstruct I concrete : research Katarina Marjanovic + Chrisse Robillard

Research is an important factor in our constant search for answers, even if we have not fully formulated the question. A common theme that architects and designers share is our desire to push boundaries but consider environmental implications as well. By altering the trajectories of construction materials that are readily available on construction sites such as: refuse concrete, wood or construction fencing. These elements were used in conjunction with non-ridged formwork. Layered with fabric of various texture and elasticity, tension is created between the concrete and the external materials. As new forms begin to emerge, a consideration to how these concrete artifacts could be applied to the built environment for structural, aesthetic or typological purposes. The crux of this project is to create and implement new methods of architectural forms in unique and thoughtprovoking ways. Materials used were abundantly available on construction sites and can be manipulated an infinite amount. Following are the results of exploration with these materials and fabric castings.

How can we think differently about the things most common to us?

Process is a journey, what can be discovered on the way? What mistakes inform our future?

What tensions can different elasticity provide? How does the surface change when using a stiff billboard vs stretchy fabric?

What can these voids and forms start to represent? At what scale do these artifacts want to be viewed?

Grasshopper was used to recreate a similar fabric function digitally.

A 3D scan of a cast is brought into Rhino. Manipulations begins to look at how site, context and physical manifestation play into the form.

Casts in the form of a site with the same techniques as previously experimented. Using a block to represent potential space for a void or building.

Integrating some of the forms and ideas discovered through research, the next progression was to formalize those ideas into a competition for a natural science museum. The site in Berlin is proximate to the zoo and other areas, creating an ideal situation for pedestrian traffic. The focus became how previous explorations of reused common materials combined with the extrusion of a series of organized programs could start to create a continuous typology that connected and defined the city edge. Looking to keep Berlin’s historical roots as well as continuous strive towards innovative technology, the museum began to mix the physical and tangible with the digital and ephemeral. Rock climbing bulbs with local sediment, roof gardens of native plant species, a grid of connected spaces of voluminous size and research labs and interactive classrooms starts to allow a new dialogue to emerge in the museum.

Where to go next? How can formative spaces create spontaneous interactions?

study abroad travel : sketches

“When one travels and works with visual things- architecture, painting or sculpture- one uses one’s eyes and draws, so as to fix deep down in one’s experience what is seen. Once the impresison is recorded by pencil, it stays for good, entered registered, inscribed. The camera is for idlers, who use a machine to do their seeing for them. To draw oneself, to trace the lines, handle the volumes, organize the surface... all this means first to look, and then to obserce and finally perhaps to discover... and it is then that inspiration may come. Inventing, creating, one’s whole being is drawing into action, and it is this action which counts. Others stood indifferent- but you saw!” -Le Corbusier Creation is a Patient Search

Armory classroom work : technical Rachelle Freegard (PM) Katarina Marjanovic (technical drawings)

Originally three separate classrooms, this project’s intent was to combine all three rooms into one larger space and create an environment for higher learning or ‘active’ classroom. Implementing multiple monitors and writable glass boards invites students to engage and on multiple visual advantages, they also have the ability to bring up their own ideas and presentations from their laptops to the monitors. The space is meant to be dynamic with movable chairs and tables, allowing the instructor to better move through the space and engage with students on a personal level. In today’s classroom technology has become a key aspect in the learning environment, but the importance of student-toteacher interaction will always be needed.

existing my role consisted of developing a complete set of technical documents from design to construction under the supervision of my PM there were also bi-weekly site visits to the site to make sure the project was on track

New Judah School work : fundraising Jessica Gilbert (architect) Katarina Marjanovic (drawings, site design, renderings)

Judah Christian school has been a local pillar of academic and community excellence in the Champaign area since 1983. Acquiring a large parcel of land has allowed the school to explore new academic and athletic facilities. Our fundraising project generated plans and images to engage and attract donors to invest in a modern and innovative teaching environment, programmed for flexibility and collaborative learning.
