March brings spring and the urge to refresh. With that in mind, this issue reveals inspirational designs that reinvigorate North Shore spaces. Art & Artist feature Dana Rogers and her handsome pup Roy grace our cover. Dana’s deep passion for her work is evident in the intricacy of each piece. Not only beautiful, her crystal and gemstone fine art has healing aspects as well. Moving from gemstone art to a dynamic designing duo, our first feature introduces Rebel House designer Marli Jones and her business partner/husband Michael Kreuser. An art-centric upbringing is evident in Marli’s curated spaces. Enjoy a visual feast of images from Rebel House projects near and far.

Our second feature highlights EXPO CHICA GO founder, Tony Karman. Chicago’s interna tional exposition of contemporary and modern art will dazzle guests from April 7 through April 10. I can’t wait to wander through the galleries of this beloved exposition again after a two-year hiatus.

Leaving galleries for a city showroom, our third feature introduces the extraordinarily talented furniture designer and Highland Park native Jordan Mozer. His pieces bring a sense of whimsy and joy to international audiences.

Swapping furnishings for artworks, our fourth feature highlights the art collection of Unison Home’s co-founder Alicia Segal. Alicia shares the tales of her collection and explains how she believes a personal connection with artists enhances one’s collection.

Our annual Home + Design issue also presents two additional features: Luxe Living showcases local influencers in design and architecture, and Selling the Shore reveals the North Shore’s top-sellers in real estate.

Trading “For Sale” signs for expert advice, we present a new quarterly section, Collector’s Corner Here we will share Hindman specialists’ auction insights. This month Corbin Horn, Hindman’s expert in European furniture and decorative

arts, shares his thoughts on the dos and don’ts of purchasing at auction.

Switching topics from art to apples, our Recipe will whet your appetite anew with a homemade apple almond cheese tart. Put your fork down and pack your bags, as First Class takes us on an adventure through two European capitals brimming with architectural delights.

Swapping passports for blueprints, Home Tour shares the work of renowned architect Celeste Robbins. Celeste is busy building beautiful struc tures where nature plays a leading role.

Moving from architecture to interior design, Glencoe’s Michele Frigon introduces recent projects in our High Style section and discusses the happenings of DesignerLink, a community she founded for interior designers.

We close the issue with Parting Words where Liz Lange shares insight into a fascinating family and an illustrious career.

A LOVING TABLE

DIVINE DESIGN

Over the course of his fifty-year career, Jacques Grange has designed homes for the world’s most respected collectors, artists, designers, and tastemakers, including Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, François Pinault, Valentino, Stavros Niarchos, Aerin Lauder, and HRH The Princess of Hanover. His classical training at Paris’s École Boulle and École Camondo, his early experience with the French design legend Henri Samuel, and his passion for contemporary art have resulted in a uniquely discerning approach to interior design. Grange’s seemingly natural, “non-designed” aesthetic is revealed through his unusual way of grouping objects, and an unparalleled sense of style and attention to detail. The book illustrates Grange’s wide-ranging inspirations and exquisite taste through 31 new residential projects in Europe and America, from a luxury hôtel particulier in Paris to a chic beachside cabana in Comporta, Portugal, and a midcentury-modern house in Los Angeles. Texts and interviews by Parisian gallerist Pierre Passebon delineate Grange’s approach to design and decoration. Previously unpublished photography by François Halard captures these singular projects with profound sensibility. Dive into divine décor, ©Jacques Grange: Recent Work by Pierre Passebon, Flammarion, is available at rizzoliusa.com.

Lake Forest’s Shelley Johnstone Paschke met Kimberly Schlegel Whitman when the two designers participated in a Veranda magazine table décor event at the Plaza Hotel in New York. The style mavens pursued their love of tablescapes in their new book, A Loving Table: Creating Memorable Gatherings. The beautiful tome shares inspiring tables and entertaining styles of 34 tastemakers revealing how they keep traditions alive in their entertaining styles. Whether incorporating recipes passed down from a grandmother’s collection or following a mother’s lessons for making guests feel comfortable, it is apparent that family has a strong influence. From formal to casual occasions, city to country, grand to intimate, these beautifully designed indoor and outdoor tables tell a story about the hostesses and their history. Pull up a chair and bon appétit. A Loving Table is available at The Lake Forest Book Store, Shelley Johnstone Design showroom in Lake Forest, or on amazon.com.

Woodlands Academy sophomore GIANNA KEUER is headed to the indoor sky diving World Cup Competition in April.

Five years ago, when Barrington’s Gianna Keuer first encountered indoor sky diving at Naperville’s iFly, she had no idea that one day she would be competing in a World Cup Competition.

On November 13, the first-ever all-female 4-way Dynamic Indoor Skydiving team, Volare, won the silver medal at the 2021 US Indoor Skydiving Nationals at iFly in El Paso, Texas. This win qualified the team for the World Cup Competition in Belgium next month. Keuer and teammates Kiana Adamson of Colorado, Bella Capra of Oregon, and Jill Knutson of New York are the fliers making up the team.

Keuer is a sophomore at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls college-prep day and boarding high school in Lake Forest. “One goal of my team is to inspire girls to work hard and follow their dreams, and I believe that my experience at Woodlands has helped me do just that,” she says.

Working hard and training weekly at iFly is preparing Keuer for the big competition. Training consists of learning the physics of wind movement, which is the driving force of indoor skydiving. Participants wear flight suits and helmets while facing winds that can approach 160 miles per hour inside a vertical glass 14-footwide tunnel.

To be successful in this sport, Keuer says that several skills come into play. “First you have to be able to stay stable in the tunnel in different positions before you can start to carve and use more fluid movements. You have to get a feel for how the wind works and it’s hard to know how to do that at first because there is so much wind and it can be confusing. Staying stable requires mental focus, core strength, and agility.”

Keuer notes, “For speed, you can adjust how much surface area you use, like the wind in a sail. If you are on your stomach, you will go high, but if you’re straight up exposing less surface area, you will drop. Using your body to catch the wind, pushes you where you want to go, but like anything, this takes practice.”

The sport is touted as one of

the most exciting and fastest-growing sports worldwide. In 2014, indoor skydiving was recognized by the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) with competitions now being held around the world. The sport is also being promoted as a future Olympic event— something Keuer would love to see.

“Being a part of this amazing team and representing the United States at the World Cup is a dream come true,” Keuer says.

Another team Keuer is part of is the nonprofit organization Hope’s In, where she focuses on educating and empowering atrisk teenage girls who live in the Guatemala City Garbage Dump Community. As a fluent Spanish speaker, she communicates easily with the girls she has met while volunteering for the past five summers and hopes to inspire them to follow their dreams.

The sky is the limit for this fierce flyer.

TANYA STANISH: BOLD, CREATIVE, TIRELESS ADVOCATE

Tanya Stanish, a Senior Partner of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP has a 25-year family law career that has been defined by her innate care for her clients. Her practice centers on her clients’ needs and a commitment to helping them toward a new life on the other side of divorce.

Tanya Stanish’s practice is focused on representing her clients, both men and women, with the utmost skill and integrity. She understands that each case, each story, and each circumstance is different and unique to that specific client.

Stanish has built a reputation as a fierce and accomplished “litigator,” a term is she has not always been particularly fond of due to its negative connotation. “Sometimes you say ‘litigator’ and people think negatively, but I’m tough. This is my forte, and I do a great job in the courtroom,” says Stanish. Litigation is a true talent that not everyone has or can learn, but Stanish has mastered and excelled in this field.

“I would love to settle a case every day of the week if possible, but sometimes cases require the courtroom because people are too far apart and you need the judge to call it. At the end of the day, I want a fair outcome for my client, and I’m determined to get it,” says Stanish. What makes her such an asset to her clients is that she’s equally as comfortable and skilled in practicing in all different forums. Stanish realizes that not every case requires litigation, and she’s just as strong (and successful) in settling cases in mediation or through attorney negotiation.

Stanish provides her clients with several different avenues, all of which will achieve the end goal, but she lets her clients determine which avenue feels right for them. She’s always on hand to work with clients to help them determine which path may be the best fit for them if they’re struggling to select that themselves.

Stanish works primarily with high net-worth clients and has a history of working with particularly high profile clients in the Chicago area as well. These cases are often accompanied by complex financials and can include sensitive family matters as well. Stanish doesn’t shy away from these cases. With a background in economics, mathematics, and accounting, Stanish confidently handles complex financial issues and is able to quickly assess the client’s goals and potential outcomes. Compassionate and understanding, Stanish also knows how to navigate delicate non-monetary familial issues, particularly as it relates to the best interests of the children involved in a case. She genuinely cares about her clients and wants to see them succeed in all aspects of their personal and professional lives.

A key component to Stanish’s successes is also keeping her clients in a positive mindset, even amidst an overwhelming case. She always reminds her clients that even if they’re on a bumpy road right now, they’re working toward an end and on the other side of that bumpy road is a whole new life.

It’s not uncommon, sometimes just a month after a divorce is finalized, or sometimes over a year later, for her former clients to reach out to Stanish with an update to let her know they’re doing well and are in a really great place.

“At the end of a long road, seeing the client happy and better off ... that’s when I know I’m making a difference,” says Stanish.

One of the biggest mistakes she sees throughout the divorce process? Not trusting your lawyer. Stanish advises that if you have a good lawyer, you should listen to them. She also notes that it’s ok to switch lawyers if you don’t like the results you’re getting (or not getting). Stanish herself often takes on cases mid-way through, where she can then reframe the case and help her clients determine a new direction.

Above all, Stanish understands and advises the importance of feeling comfortable with and having trust in your representation. That way, you can work together as a team, as she does with her clients, and get the results you want and deserve.

SUSTAINABLY LUXE

Another Tomorrow founder, Vanessa Barboni Hallik, shares insights into her ethically focused luxury fashion brand.

Vanessa Barboni Hallik lives a life that is sustainably driven. Her path was indirect—a career that began in finance unexpectedly led her to fashion. Since then, she has strived to model change for good within the industry. Just weeks before the 2020 lockdown, Barboni Hallik launched Another Tomorrow, a values-based, ethically focused fashion brand that pairs luxury with accountability. Since then, demand for the brand’s sustainable wardrobe essentials has grown exponentially. Sensual, strong, and proportioned to flatter many forms, Another Tomorrow’s masterfully tailored separates prove that a responsible approach can be paired with design and quality. Barboni Hallik sits down with Another Tomorrow Advisory Board Member and brand expert Amy Wexler to share the philosophy behind Another Tomorrow and the inspiration behind an enduring love of Chicago.

Who is the Another Tomorrow woman?

The Another Tomorrow woman is globally conscious, curious, lives fully—professionally and personally—and appreciates timeless quality she can make her own.

You were born and raised in the Midwest. How does your upbringing continue to influence you?

The way I grew up in the Midwest was somewhat unique. I was born and initially raised in Grinnell, Iowa, where my dad was a professor and my mother an artist. It was an incredible intersection of ideas and culture in that tiny town. Chicago was my city and instilled such a love of art and architecture in me. My mom grew up in the suburbs, and her favorite aunt was an actress.

Besides family, what continues to draw you to Chicago?

As a classically trained dancer, I adore seeing productions at the Harris Theater. I attended Akram Khan’s production of Giselle in 2019 and returned recently for a performance of Ragamala Dance Company’s Fires of Varanasi: Dance of the Eternal Pilgrim

It is a very special community to which I was introduced by Liza Yntema a few years ago.

How has your brand evolved since launching in 2020, and where is it headed in 2022?

The response to Another Tomorrow has been tremendous. Clients value the idea of modern, timeless luxury that honors the Earth. We source only environmentally certified, ethical, and traceable materials and maintain direct relationships with regenerative farms. For transparency and future authentication, every item we produce includes a digital identity in the care label, so customers can learn how their garments evolved from farm to fabric to

atelier. I am proud that we were the first in the luxury fashion segment to earn both Climate Neutral and B Corp certifications and participate in 1% for the Planet.

You will be in town during EXPO CHICAGO, what are your plans?

We will be hosting a dinner alongside one of our Advisory Board members, Isolde Brielmaier, within the arts community. And in the meantime, we will be honoring Liza Yntema, President and Founder of the Dance Data Project®, as part of our ongoing Women For Tomorrow series that profiles trailblazers, change-makers, and women of influence.

What is your favorite look from your Spring collection?

Hands down our black and white houndstooth coat. I am lucky to have had an early sample and wear it nearly year-round.

What is your best advice for living more sustainably?

We can only act according to our level of awareness, so I suggest staying curious and asking questions of the brands you buy, specifically how and where materials were sourced and whether those producing what we purchase were paid a living wage.

At just nine years old, North Shore-based fine artist Dana Rogers won a drawing contest sponsored by the Art Institute of Chicago, a competition geared toward discovering upand-coming talent in the Windy City. The prize? Six months of art classes at the Art Institute. The rest, as they say, is history.

“I was the only person in the class whose dad held their hand walking in each week,” laughs Rogers. “I was the youngest person in the class by at least 15 years and remember being so intimidated, but I loved every minute. Art brought me happiness and gave me purpose.”

Rogers later went on to attend the esteemed ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, which boasts a photography department founded by famed American photographer Fred Archer and past instructors like the visionary Ansel Adams.

No surprise, then, Rogers pursued a degree in fine art photography and began her career as a commercial photographer. She worked on national advertising campaigns for Fortune 500 brands like Coca-Cola, Walgreens, and McDonald’s and also on celebrity shoots with recognizable names like Billy Bob Thornton, Nicole Scherzinger, and Mark McGrath.

It wasn’t until Rogers and her husband Spencer, also an artist and photographer, had their son, Cash, in 2007 that the duo

decided to strike out on their own. They combined their mix of commercial and artistic photography experience to open Edenhurst Studio, which helped families searching for unique ways to capture special memories.

In 2014, the couple created Photographic Abstractions, which combined small sections of Spencer’s paintings—with a focus on texture and color combinations—then used a digital rendering camera to capture fine details in the sharpest clarity possible. The resulting file could then be reproduced and printed on materials like acrylic, metal, glass, and fine art papers.

And now, Rogers focuses primarily on manifestation art, or what she describes as healing crystal and gemstone fine art.

The purpose of manifestation art is to transform a space into one of healing, protection, or change by setting intentions with the healing crystals and gemstones Rogers uses in her artworks. The crystals and gemstones, she says, help connect your conscious thoughts with your body and your space.

“One day in 2020, my husband casually mentioned to me how he wished he could have more lucid dreams,” says Rogers. “For his birthday, I set an intention to make a piece that would set him on

this path. I used amethyst, labradorite, and clear quartz to create my first piece. After a few nights, he said, ‘I think you are on to something.’ He really gave me the push I needed to explore the possibilities of what I could do.”

“My soul has always been drawn to spirituality, healing, and mystical pathways,” says Rogers. “Since I was young, I’ve been fascinated with how our universe works and how nature can have so many restorative properties. It’s truly awe-inspiring.”

Rogers selects specific high-quality gemstones and crystals for each piece to achieve a unique intention for transformation. Rose quartz, for example, helps open the heart; amethyst develops intuition; citrine is the stone of success; black kyanite offers protection from negative energy; and tiger’s eye enhances one’s personal power. Everyone, Rogers says, should have shungite in their homes. It’s capable of protecting, grounding, guarding, and healing you simultaneously.

“There are a lot of stones that can do the same thing but what I do is find the stones that work well together to bring that certain intention into your space and your life,” explains Rogers. “I love the way they look and how they make me feel but mostly I love their healing powers. Behaving intentionally is the key to living the life you dream of. Intention is one of the most powerful forces in nature.”

Rogers once sold a commissioned piece for a woman whose husband set an intention—by placing his hands on the piece—to manifest his goals quickly. Later, the wife saw Rogers’ husband, Spencer, on the golf course and told him her husband had secured the deal he was working on and credited part of that success to Rogers’ piece of art.

“That warmed my heart,” says Rogers. “That’s the magic of the pieces. Gemstones and crystals are the bridge that connects intentional thought to daily life. I am a firm believer in a mindbody-nature balance in our lives, and in my opinion, this balance is often overlooked. I hope my art can help more people pay

attention to this.”

Rogers is currently prepping for a show at Laughlin Gallery in Highland Park that will debut this month and will showcase both her work and that of the late Spencer, who sadly passed away recently. His legacy, however, lives on in Rogers’ work and in the spirit of his family.

“I have to clear my own energy after our family tragedy and create a piece for myself that will help my heart to heal and help me to stay in the moment—not in the past or the future but the now,” says Rogers. “In the same way I bring change to people in whatever form they need, I am doing that for myself now.”

For more information, visit danarogers.art. The Laughlin Gallery opening is on March 11 at 5:00 p.m. For more information about the opening, email info@laughlingallery.com.

ON HER RADIO

“Either stuck in Lake Shore Drive traffic or having a singalong on my in-laws’ sailboat on Lake Michigan, Chris Stapleton is always playing. I saw him at Coachella five years ago on a small side stage, and I love that with all his fame he is still exactly the same. His music is so moving, and I love that his wife is his lead vocalist. Any dog lover must listen to ‘Maggie’s Song.’”

ON HER NIGHTSTAND

“The only book that is on my nightstand is What to Expect The First Year by Heidi Murkoff. My daughter was born at the end of May and each day is an adventure. I recently traveled alone and was thrilled to have quiet time to read through the current issue of Vogue, it was heaven.”

ON HER MOBILE

“Scrolling through, I am always checking on PAWS’ Instagram account. It brings me such joy to see the animals we are saving. To see a malnourished dog that was left in a cardboard box become a healthy and thriving family pet is simply the best. ON THE HAMMER

Hindman’s Corbin Horn offers a specialist’s insight into the world of auctions.

As a Senior Specialist and the Director of Hindman’s sales of European Decorative Arts, the category of collecting that includes furniture, sculpture, carpets, ceramics, mirrors, and more, I am often asked what’s “in” and what’s “out.” My colleagues and I advise our clients on acquiring for their collections, how to furnish a historic or a brand-new home, and how our firm can help them with transitions in their lives. Regrettably, the word “collecting” has a public relations problem. People today are turned off by the concepts of collections and clutter … yet people are collecting. They do it on Instagram—

collecting images, collecting ideas, collecting digital art, collect ing people. Our job is to teach this new audience how easily the hoarder’s instinct (it is inside all of us) can be applied with great pleasure to physical objects. You might think “I am not interested in antiques,” but historic objects absolutely belong in contempo rary rooms. Incorporating something with the patina of age adds personality and character; a single rare object casts its glow across everything else in a room. I would advise you should never hire a designer who only buys from manufacturers’ showrooms. Historic design and decorative arts are as cherished now as they were in our grandparents’ day—what has changed is the way we use them in our homes. It is out of fashion to fill a house with collections and formal furniture; many people will buy two or three very good things, the best of the best, and juxtapose them against more inviting furniture in open rooms. If you bring home a 1740s gilded Rococo mirror with opulent details, give it room to breathe. It needs a stark white wall or an uncrowded room to show itself off.

Auctions bring modern and historic designs from all over the world to one’s doorstep, at a range of price points from entry-level to major commitment. It is possible to own near-museum-worthy examples of the finest furniture ever made, often for less than the cost of something from the Merchandise Mart and without waiting fourteen months in this supply chain-challenged climate. However, you should not expect instant gratification. Dynamic rooms with meaningful works of art take years to build; the process cannot be rushed.

There is a strategy to buying at auction, and the advice is the same whether you are spending $1,000 on your first chair or $100,000 on a major work of art. Do all your research and decide how much you want to spend before the auction begins. Bidding moves at light speed; only with preparation are you guaranteed to get what you want at a comfortable price. Be aware of the premium, a commission you pay to the auction house on top of the hammer price. Get a second opinion before making a big purchase. Seek the knowledge of an art adviser or a trusted and impartial dealer, who can protect you from paying too much, buying something fake, or otherwise making a mistake. Be aware that items may need “freshening” before they are ready to bring home. You or your designer should have preferred upholsterers, refinishers, framers, and restorers. Lastly, do not approach the auction looking for something. Have an open mind and let yourself be moved by something new. Experienced collectors do not look for anything specific, rather they say, “show me what you think is the best.” They are looking for beautiful objects made from costly or exotic materials, fine workmanship, or sometimes just a better version of something they already own.

Above all, have fun. Collecting is an encyclopedic experience that brings a lifetime of enjoyment. Find a friend or a partner who likes to learn, and you will never be bored.

The European Furniture & Decorative Arts department will present a live and online auction from April 20 to 21, with bidding beginning at 10 am, hindmanauctions.com/auctions/1017-european-furniture-decorative-arts. An online auction will follow on April 22, also at 10 am, hindmanauctions.com/auctions/1018-european-furniture-decorative-arts. APPLE ALMOND CHEESE TART

America’s love of apples is a deeply-rooted passion, with recipes from mothers, aunts, and grandmothers long held dear. My mother used bright green Granny Smith apples to make her apple cheese tart, tucking apple slices into a sweet cream cheese filling and sprinkling almond slices on top. My version of the family recipe injects the essence of almond in the filling and in the tasty tart crust and lets the beautiful spiral of apples take center stage. This recipe makes two, 9.5inch tarts.

For the apple topping:

• 6 small Granny Smith apples, cored, peeled, quartered, and thinly sliced

• 2 tablespoons light brown sugar

For the tart crust:

• 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1/2 cup pure cane sugar; or, light-brown sugar (packed)

• 2/3 cups almond meal

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 2 sticks (1 cup) extra-chilled salted

butter, cut into cubes

• 2 egg yolks (save the whites for the filling)

• 4 tablespoons cream, or whole milk (as needed)

For the cream cheese filling:

• 1, 8-ounce package cream cheese

• 4 eggs (plus egg whites reser ved from the crust)

• 2/3 cups pure cane sugar

• 2 teaspoons almond extract

• A pinch of salt

METHOD

Apple topping:

Toss sliced apples with sugar in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate.

Crust:

Sift all-purpose flour and sugar into a large shallow bowl. Stir in almond meal and salt. Cut in chilled butter until pea-sized crumbles form. Using your fingertips, lightly break up the bits until the mixture resembles wet sand. Stir in egg yolks and add

cream until the mixture gathers up. Spread two overlapping sheets of plastic wrap onto counter; scoop dough onto plastic. Gather into a ball. Cut in half. Flatten each piece of dough into a disk. Wrap each in plastic and chill in the refrigerator.

Make filling:

Using an immersion blender, stand blender, or food processor, combine all filling ingredients.

Assemble tarts:

Place oven rack in center of oven. Preheat to 350 F. Roll out each tart crust; press crusts into two tart pans, trimming and saving any excess. Divide filling between the two crusts. Remove sugared apples from the refrigerator. Starting at the center of the tart, spiral the apples moving in a circular pattern until half of the apple slices have been used and the surface of the tart is covered with a beautiful spiral of apple slices. Repeat with the second tart. Place tarts on rack in oven. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove to a cooling rack. Serve at room temperature, or, chilled. MONICA

AMSTERDAM & BUDAPEST

AMSTERDAM

In the 17th century, The Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam emerged as one of the world’s most important centers of trade. With that came wealth and with wealth, a blossoming of culture and the city’s expansion. The Dutch masters thrived, producing some of the world’s most treasured masterpieces, while storybook row houses sprung up like Dutch tulips along winding canals.

The city continues to be steeped in culture and retains the beautiful architecture of centuries past, but it also feels modern. Just beyond the historic facades, we found swanky hot spots and modern luxury. Our first encounter with a thoroughly modern Amsterdam took place while traveling from the airport to the city center. During this quick 25-minute ride, we spied massive glass structures lining the highway. Those occupying these glass houses? Many of today’s tech giants, including Google. I wasn’t expecting a modern landscape as an introduction to the historic capital, but

it helped explain Amsterdam’s thoroughly hip vibe.

This vibrant city is easily walkable (or bikeable). It possesses 165 idyllic canals flanked by fairy-tale gabled houses—some with a hint of tilt disclosing the dwelling’s marshy underpinnings. We spent many an afternoon strolling the cobblestone streets, crossing bridge after bridge in this charming city. Our favorite neighborhoods were De 9 Straatjes (Nine Streets) and Jordaan, both full of leafy canals, art galleries, boutiques, and cafés. You could spend years exploring these neighborhoods and not exhaust the possibilities of their quaint storefronts.

Everything is very close, the only area requiring a bit of a walk from our hotel was Museum Square and Vondelpark, one of the city’s largest green spaces. The museums were worth the extra steps and the scenery en route can’t be beat (you’ll pass an Instagram-worthy, canal-side flower market on the way).

I promised my daughter this trip would be more of an “enjoy the city” adventure with fewer visits to churches and museums. However, I could not pass up Rijksmuseum, an architectural treasure housing many of the Dutch masters’ work. We saw several Vermeer and Frans Hals masterpieces, but the museum’s most celebrated work is Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. The painting is breathtaking in scope and size.

We popped in next door to The Van Gogh Museum established by Van Gogh’s nephew. This light-filled building showcases the short and tortured life of Vincent Van Gogh. The incredible breadth of Van Gogh’s work paints a portrait of the man himself, and you will glimpse the artist through the eyes of his family.

Be sure not to miss The Rembrandt House Museum, home to many of his etchings, and The Anne Frank House. The latter is very popular amongst tourists, so reserve your tickets in advance.

If you are going to visit several museums and attractions on your trip to Amsterdam, you may consider buying the I amsterdam City Card. It includes admission to a whole list of museums, sights, and a canal boat tour. This tour of Amsterdam’s UNESCO-protected canal ring is a delightful way to experience the city.

As a home base, we chose the Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky located in the heart of the city and marrying historic significance with modern luxury. In 1865, Mr. Krasnapolsky, a charismatic Polish tailor, opened a tiny coffee house on the site that is now this grand hotel. Our spacious and modernly appointed Royal Suite offered glorious views of the National Monument, Dam Square, and the Royal Palace.

As a nod to Mr. Krasnapolsky’s chosen trade, “The Tailor,” a beautiful indoor/outdoor cocktail bar located off the reception

hall, offers tailor-made and bespoke cocktails. A perfect locale to relax after a day of sightseeing.

We began our days feasting in The Wintergarden, a 19th-century glass-ceilinged courtyard, once the backdrop of a royal wedding. Just across the hall, lies The White Room. Here under the watchful eye of three-starred Michelin chef Jacob Jan Boerma, the restaurant showcases refined modern cuisine using only Netherland’s freshest ingredients in a historic setting. As we dined on the most splendid food in Amsterdam, I envisioned gallant guests of long ago.

With all the walking, desserts are well deserved—the hotel boasts a resident chocolatier who creates decadent delicacies. Upon arrival, a chocolate Christmas stable was waiting for us in our suite—a signature Anantara touch. We found it almost too beautiful to eat, but the scent wore down our resolve.

If you have time for a day trip, The Hague is only an hour away via train and the trip offers breathtaking views of the Dutch countryside. Be sure to visit Andrew Carnegie’s Peace Palace, the seat of the United Nations International Court of Justice, and the Mauritshuis museum, home to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.

We found The Netherlands utterly charming and look forward to a return. Recently, Amsterdam has sought to reshape its anything-goes reputation. The campaign has been a success; during our trip, we saw none of the raucous behavior sometimes associated with the Dutch capital’s red-light district and cannabis coffee shops. We loved every minute.

Leaving Amsterdam we set our sights on another golden city, Budapest.

BUDAPEST

Once Buda and Pest were separate cities on either side of the Danube. In 1873, Buda, Pest, and a third town, Obuda, were united to become Hungary’s capital city. The Buda side extends into the hills on the west bank of the Danube, crowned by Castle Hill. On the east, the former Pest lies in the lowlands and is home to the immense Parliament building.

1896 is the year to remember as most of the city’s buildings were erected for the city’s 1,000th-anniversary celebration. During Hungary’s millennial celebrations, the spirit of entrepreneurship, art, and literature was at its zenith. Throughout the city, you’ll find a treasure trove of architectural styles from that time including Baroque, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau.

We stayed on the Pest side in the beautifully renovated 5-star Neo-Baroque-style Anantara New York Palace, home to the famed New York Café and located just a quick 20-minute drive from the airport. The café boasts Belle Époque décor that has dazzled visitors for more than 120 years. Its frescoed ceilings, Venetian chandeliers, and gilded balustrades reflect the grand atmosphere of the Habsburg coffee houses. No wonder this landmark was a favorite of artists, writers, and aristocrats.

The hotel is an ode to Europe’s Belle Époque period—a grand marble façade adorned with ornate carvings features an impressive clock tower, while inside the lofty central courtyard/lobby is surrounded by open terraced floors reaching toward a vaulted glass ceiling – transporting you to the golden era in which it was built. Off the central lobby is the 100-year-old Poet Bar, overlooking the White Salon Restaurant. With its red-hued, intimate ambiance, it was the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail after a day of sightseeing.

The 185 rooms and suites are accented by centuries-old art and antiques, Murano glass chandeliers, and sumptuous marble bathrooms. Our suite with its spectacular city views overlooked the bustling and elegant Erzsebet Korut, one of Budapest’s most important boulevards and one that would carry us to many sights.

Budapest is an easily navigable city with plenty to see. A few

musts are the Neogothic Parliament, an immense structure situated on the banks of the Danube. The world’s third-largest Parliament building is spectacular inside and out. It contains close to 700 interior rooms, ten courtyards, almost 100 statues of Hungarian rulers on its façade, and 12.5 miles of staircases. Be sure to book a tour to learn its history and to view King Steven’s crown jewels.

During our visit, Budapest’s landmark Chain Bridge, the first permanent stone bridge connecting Buda and Pest, was under renovation so instead, we crossed the Margaret Bridge with its beautiful views of the Parliament and Castle Hill. En route to the Royal Palace, we stopped at Fisherman’s Bastion. This decorative fortification offers splendid panoramic views of Budapest. Its seven turreted towers symbolize the seven Hungarian chieftains who founded Hungary in 895.

Leaving the site, you will come upon the 800-year-old Gothic-style Matthias Church, the site of the coronation of two kings. A short walk away lies the Royal Palace; its grounds are home to beautiful fountains, gardens, and views of the city. Be sure to take the funicular back down the hill—this fan-favorite was originally built in 1870 as a way to ferry workers to and from the palace.

On our walk back to the hotel, we stopped at the large indoor market – yet another building built for the 1896 celebration. This vast space houses stall upon stall offering meats, cheeses, and of

course, Hungarian Paprika, which you will find in all forms, sizes, and intensities.

Famished from our day of touring, we booked an Anantara Spice Spoons experience. Overlooking the beautifully illuminated Parliament building, we feasted on traditional Hungarian fare at the Chef’s Table. We sampled variations of hearty Hungarian breads slathered with a variety of spreads. Next, was a plethora of sausages and potato moodily. Then, we donned aprons and joined Chef Andras Wolf behind the grill to prepare langos, a traditional Hungarian street food. After mixing and kneading the pizza-crust-like dough, we fried this delicious treat and topped it with sour cream, grated cheese, and paprika. During the meal, we tasted various palinka, a traditional Hungarian fruit brandy, and ended on a sweet note sampling desserts made with traditional cottage cheese (a Hungarian favorite).

On our last day, we headed in the opposite direction of Buda toward the 1896 fairgrounds. At the park’s threshold is Hero Square, a large plaza bookended by the National Museum and the Palace of Exhibitions. Beyond the square, you will find a large city park, a zoo with fun Art Nouveau décor, and a “Transylvania castle” boasting a hodge-podge of architectural designs. Finally, we visited the famed Neo-Baroque Széchenyi Baths, Europe’s largest medicinal bath sourced by two

thermal springs.

For the perfect ending to our European escapade, we visited The New York Palace spa – beneath the hotel’s lobby lies an expansive spa housing steam rooms, saunas, a surreal swimming pool, and relaxation rooms. As we enjoyed a warm mud massage inspired by Budapest’s thermal bath heritage, memories of sights seen danced in our heads. This proved the perfect finishing touch to a fantastic visit.

Pack your bags, European capital-style history and culture await.

SHERIDAN ROAD 76

Winnetka-based architect Celeste Robbins found her calling at an early age simply by pairing her talent for mathematics with her love for art and design. She discovered a way to marry the two disciplines at Cornell University, studying architecture, and then, after a brief stint in Boston post-graduation, moved to Chicago to be closer to her family in the Midwest.

“It was the ‘80s,” Robbins recalls. “At the time, women in engineering felt novel and exciting. As my dad was an engineer and I did well in math, it just made sense. But I was also really interested in and had a passion for art.”

While an architect at the Chicago-based firm Perkins & Will, Robbins worked on large-scale projects, like educational facilities. Looking for an opportunity to continue pursuing her love of design while taking on the new role of motherhood, Robbins Architecture was born in 1995. Though it required late nights and some fearless learning, Robbins took on design, business, and job site visits with passion.

Soon thereafter, Robbins received an offer to design a 10,000-square-foot house in Jackson Hole, Wyoming from

the ground up. With breathtaking views of the Grand Tetons, Robbins honed her signature aesthetic, one that is grounded in softness and minimalism to let nature be the star. “People think of modern architecture as a strong and powerful statement,” says Robbins. “For me, it’s the opposite. It’s about being quiet so nature becomes the art in the room. Ornamentation is edited so that there is space to appreciate the warmth of light or a play of shadow on the wall.”

The house landed a feature in lauded design tome Architectural Digest, and Robbins has since completed five more projects for the same family.

Robbins took a similar approach in her own home, which caught the eye of Robyn Tavel during the Glencoe House Walk. Tavel later called Robbins and asked her to build a house for her and her family in the same spirit.

Both Robbins and Tavel spoke the same architectural language. The appreciation of clean lines, natural light, and views of the natural surroundings. Between magazine clippings and mutual inspiration, the house came to life. In addition to the outdoor focus, Tavel wanted to showcase the collection of bright and colorful art she shares with her husband. Tavel herself volunteers at the Muse

um of Contemporary Art.

“Modernism comes in many forms,” Robbins says. “I love organic elements, like oatmeal linen and branches, whereas Robyn loves pops of color and shiny things. Her enthusiasm was infectious. It was fun to do something new and outside of my comfort zone.”

Robbins used her tools to capitalize on the inherent beauty of the site, which faced a ravine with a dramatic woodland view. Floor-toceiling glass captured the site’s glory, each room feeling like its own treehouse and intimately connected to the seasonal displays.

However, this kind of openness would have created a privacy issue on the street facade. Here, Robbins needed to create visual interest with minimal glass. Using a creative pattern of narrow windows, Robbins animated the facade with an irregular pattern of glass and limestone. “I wanted to capture the artistry of the tree pattern found in the site’s woodland scene and bring it to the street facade for a soft dialogue between nature and building.”

To further soften the edges of the house, Robbins built an extended roof overhang to give it an ethereal edge. “I like to think of a home as a charcoal sketch or watercolor where the edges are blurred and meet the sky and its surroundings gracefully.”

“They saw the house as a piece of art, too,” says Robbins. “Even the

choreography of moving throughout the home and living within its walls is its own form of art. Houses have repeated paths as you move from one room to the next. I wanted all of it to feel composed and crafted to present an experience as you live in the home.” Gallery-like hallways display the Tavel’s art collection, including pieces from contemporary artist Meredith Pardue and visual artist Julian Opie, alongside views of arboreal beauty.

Robbins now has her sights set on projects in Highland Park, Michigan, and Lake Geneva. Whether the site has a dramatic lakefront view or a quiet Midwest landscape, Robbins weaves the site’s natural beauty into the architecture. “Nature’s beauty is timeless. It doesn’t get it wrong and we can rely on it for authentic and changing warmth.”

She’s eyeing trends where beauty is found in authentic materials like walls of book-matched marble and living finishes that celebrate age; all of which seemingly defy the laws of modernism but make sense through Robbins’ studied interpretation.

“Modernism is not an edgy, severe aesthetic. It is a collection of design principles—a balance of scale, an emphasis on the move ment within and between spaces, and a connection to nature,” says Robbins. “These are the words that guide our work. Our clients allow us to be artists. Together we build a more meaningful home.”

Anative East Coaster, Glencoe-based interior designer Michele Frigon spent her summers growing up in the Hamptons. There she found inspiration in the classic architecture, lush landscape design, and coastal interiors, building a foundation for what would later become her thriving residential interior design business.

She launched her namesake firm 13 years ago after first studying graphic design and business at Notre Dame—“My dad didn’t think I could make any money without a business degree,” laughs Frigon— then spending nearly two years in Anchorage, Alaska designing cabin interiors.

Even though Alaskan cabins are a far cry from the design work she does now, Frigon says the experience served as the impetus for pursuing a formal design degree upon relocating to Chicago. She would then spend a decade working in model home concepting and staging and in corporate design before eventually moving to the North Shore and striking out on her own.

“Something that has helped me is having a background in architecture as well as in materials and textiles,” says Frigon. “Many designers feel more comfortable with one or the other, but I’m passionate about both. I honestly think part of that curiosity stems

from spending summers in the Hamptons. That said, I don’t love the phrase ‘coastal design,’ but I do like the coastal look.”

Her signature style mimics this sentiment and is defined as a curated blend of relaxed, refined, and livable design. And while other designers fall into either the pro-color or pro-neutral camp, Frigon says she embraces a philosophy of “controlled color,” in which she uses color in a restrained way that further highlights the design of a space.

She’s currently working on the interiors of a Bridgehampton-style house that’ll look “straight out of the

Frigon aimed for fresh and timeless and somehow managed to pull it off during the height of the pandemic.

“I often find inspiration in the architecture of a home but also from the client themselves along with fabrics and textiles,” says Frigon. “They’re usually my spring point for a design and inform my decisions. I also love Instagram and have a library full of design books and magazines that I’ve been collecting for years.”

She’s been eyeing a few trends, like spatial efficiency in architecture as people continue to adjust to working from home; an influx of warmer tones, like chocolate, mustard, green with yellow undertones, and blues; and a rise in popularity for reworked vintage pieces that make something old, new again.

Frigon recently redid a desk in her own home, describing it as “shabby chic” until she refinished the piece in a high-gloss green hue and added new hardware from Modern Matter. One of her favorite partners is Chicago-based Vintage Refined, a refinishing company and custom furniture store in Fulton Market.

Her commitment to highlighting vendors and working with select partners is part of the reason Frigon was inspired to recently re-launch DesignerLink, a membership-based community with monthly trade shopping experiences solely for interior designers.

Think exclusive access to more than 80 vendors, ranging from Holly Hunt and Phillip Jeffries to Schumacher and Visual Comfort, along with networking and mentorship.

“I started DesignerLink six years ago under a different name and format,” explains Frigon. “Coming from a corporate background, I was used to lunch and learns where we’d be educated about new products and see samples. I wanted to replicate that experience locally for myself and for my peers.”

She did that for a few years but calls it “very casual” without a formal membership program. As her business grew, Frigon knew it was time to expand DesignerLink into the format it is today but figured she’d do it for a year and see how it went.

“The designers involved were begging me not to let it go,” says Frigon. “And really, as the ultimate goal was to support small interior design businesses and to also support our valued design partners, I kept it going.”

This fall, Frigon partnered with Winnetka-based wellness sanctuary Sole + Luna for member events and says DesignerLink now has nearly 30 members, including both up-and-coming and established designers. One member, Lj Savarie, met Frigon through DesignerLink and the two went on to partner for the 2020 Lake Forest Showhouse benefitting the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago.

Similar to a pop-up, an average of six-to-eight trade partners attend each event, and designers can either shop or mingle and network—or a combination of the two. The idea is to make the interior design business model more efficient for both designers and their trade partners.

“It can be really hard to be on your own as a designer,” says Frigon. “When I first started, I worked in an office, and there was so much value in collaborating with others. Now, everyone is independent and on their own. Designers used to hoard their sources, but with DesignerLink we can be supportive of each other and share. It’s truly a wonderful asset.”

SUSTAINABILITY AT HOME

For over 100 years, the Swedish-founded company, Bona, has been guided by a commitment to sustainability by innovating cleaner and greener solutions for floor renovation and maintenance.

Living an environmentally-friendly existence has become more popular and is now widely accepted. However, most Americans have no idea about the dangerous and toxic effects of something as simple as choosing a floor finishing product.

Bona, a worldwide industry leader in hardwood floor care, is committed to developing safe and sustainable products. It is also focused on bringing awareness to the dangers of acid-cured finishes (sometimes called a “Swedish” finish). What it has often found, is homeowners and contractors simply don’t have all the information when making a refinishing decision.

“It’s important that they know they have choices, and it can go a long way in the health of the home and the longevity of the floor,” says Matt Hudson, Bona’s Regional Sales Manager for the West.

Bona was the first in the industry to offer a full system of water borne hardwood floor finishing products which are a safer, more sustainable option to acid cured. Today, the company leads the market with their Bona Traffic HD finish, which is considered the industry standard and the core of the hardwood flooring industry.

Bona’s waterborne products are clear, colorless, and quick drying. Most importantly, it’s a safe product that doesn’t emit toxic gases, meaning a family can still live in their house while the floors are refinished. The Bona Traffic HD finish is Greenguard Certified, one of the highest sustainable and environmentally friendly ratings possible. Bona’s products have been extensively tested with results that show its waterborne finishes hold up just as well, if not better than acid-cured floor finishes.

Acid-cured finishes, by contrast, emit harmful gases and toxins. While the initial dry period is slightly faster, it can offgas into the home for anywhere from two weeks to two months. When using acid-cured finishes, families, their pets, and all food

(even what’s in the refrigerator) must be moved out of the house during the refinishing process for health and safety reasons. And for those who are fond of the amber-colored finish acid-based finishes offer, Bona has safe, waterborne sealers that can achieve that same look.

Bona helps educate contractors through its Bona Certified Craftsman Program, now in its 10th year. The company seeks out the best contractors in each region—people who are the best at their craft and who keep up to date on the industry trends and standards—and offers training, education, and networking opportunities.

The program also encourages innovation for cleaner, safer, and more sustainable floor solutions. Bona teams up with its Certified Craftsmen to troubleshoot challenges they face in the field. Many of Bona’s innovations are a result of this collaboration including its dust containment system that extracts dust from the floor sanding process and eliminates the need for hanging plastic around the home.

“There’s a misconception that it’s a dusty mess to refinish floors,” says Hudson, who helped develop the program. “It’s just not true. Refinishing a floor can be easy and straightforward with minimal dust and smell. And best of all, you get a beautiful floor as a result.”

Above all, the process of refinishing a floor is an investment that lasts many years. And at the end of the day, the decision is in the consumer’s hands. Bona is empowering homeowners to be educated on the sustainable, health, and safety impacts waterborne finishes can provide that far outweigh the cost of acid-based products.

ARTISTIC INTERIORS

Rebel House principals Marli Grace Jones and Michael Kreuser speak to the art of design.

Clean lines. A neutral palette. Layered textures. Meet husband and wife team Michael Kreuser and Marli Grace Jones, Rebel House Interior Design principals.

Stunningly simple twin olive trees flank the picture window of their Hubbard Woods design studio, quietly beckoning you to look further, to enter. Once inside, the joy for the business of interior design emanates from Jones and Kreuser. Joy for one another and, more broadly, their team and clients—this zest, this air of positivity, is contagious.

Layers of textures and California cool is the foundation, with sparks of edge to keep things interesting.

Black elements ground the space, and in their shared office is an eye-popping photograph of an artfully tattooed woman and man, holding hands. Jones and Kreuser are people you want to be friends with.

A passion for design for Jones came early, as would be expected with parents who met in Paris, at art school. Their focus: learning and practicing “technique mixte,” a Dutch Masters-inspired, photorealist style of oil painting under a teacher who became a lifelong mentor. This demanding medium greatly influenced Jones on the art of pursuing beauty through a process where the aesthetic itself is the chief goal.

Jones’ father, Steven Jones, is a Winnetka native and lifelong professional painter and curator who teaches painting in retirement at a private estate in Lake Forest.

Carol, Jones’ mother and a Lake Forest native, sold her entire body of work in her early 30s to a collector. For the next 30 years, she ran a successful graphic design business creating identities for many North Shore-based corporations.

Jones grew up in Lake Forest, inspired by her mother’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Interior design was her calling from an early age. Elementary school sketchbooks—even chalk drawings on the driveway—featured floor plans and room layouts.

modern American artists. Here, she was tapped to be the right hand to the principal. In her elevated role, she designed for Silicon Valley venture capitalists on the Peninsula and in Wine Country.

In 2015, she launched her business, which quickly thrived, requiring additional leadership. Kreuser officially joined her as co-owner in 2018. They have, as they say, “a dynamic bond, sharing what they love: being creative and running a good firm.”

Fast forward to today; Rebel House has a flourishing business, with its Hubbard Woods enterprise expanding organically.

Rebel House took what was once a galley kitchen and created a new focal point for this high-rise condo. The custom cabinetry provides a frame for the White Macaubas quartzite to take center stage while the undulating ceiling fixture references the expansive lake views just out of the frame.

Kreuser was raised in Peoria, but his father’s career at a world-leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment took the family to both Japan and Australia. These experiences shaped Kreuser’s global perspective and created an appreciation for design.

Kreuser’s entrepreneurial bent was influenced by his mother Chris, who in retirement coached entrepreneurs at a Stanford University program.

Jones and Kreuser met in college at Illinois Wesleyan and then ventured post-graduation to San Francisco. By that time, Jones had earned a master’s in Interior Architecture and Design and Kreuser had earned an Emmy in broadcasting.

Jones’ first job was at a boutique Bay Area firm that emphasized art in design, often featuring blue-chip,

“Word of mouth is the basis of our growth. We’ve been so fortunate to join our clients on their life’s journeys, from their homes on the North Shore to their second and third homes. The element of trust is key to a successful collaboration, and we’re proud we have that kind of relationship with our clients,” says Jones.

The pair believes a holistic approach packs the biggest punch. “We look at the entirety of a room and how it functions, the materials, and the forms. We highly discourage following ‘trends’ and instead want to foster an appreciation for the architecture of a space along with the personal interests of the spaces’ inhabitants. We strive to create work that stands the test of time. An interior should not be fast fashion, but a calculated amalgamation of a client’s persona organized and elevated by our team’s experience and knowledge.”

“An interior is the natural projection of the soul.”
SHERIDAN ROAD 94

While much of Rebel House’s work is focused on a modern, art-forward aesthetic, Jones and Kreuser have been personally steeped in a pet project centered around historic design—renovating their own 1924 Tudor home in Glencoe.

“We purchased what many deemed a tear-down in 2019, just before the pandemic, five blocks from the lake. The bones were great, but the home had not been lived in for four years. It was truly hard, even as profes sionals, to see past the immense amount of cosmetic work that needed to be done,” says Kreuser.

While expecting their now two-year-old son, they got to work on a full-scale renovation. “This has been a passion project that got us through the last few years of the pandemic, and it taught us a lot about the emotional components of renovation,” he observes.

“We learned how to be the kind of partner for our clients that we wish we’d had: someone who can make it fun, inspiring, and digestible through a well-orchestrated team and organized communication. We focused our personal design efforts on incorporating

gothic arches from the original bones of the home into the custom millwork, cabinetry, and fireplaces. We mixed in modern elements with historic details of the era to create a dynamic interior that elegantly straddles the line of fresh and familiar. This was our opportunity to experiment, and we gained even more incredibly talented partners in various crafts. Our next big project is a custom grisaille landscape scene painted by a local muralist on our dining room walls.”

Next up for this dynamic duo: working on groundup construction and renovations across the North Shore along with private residences in Utah, California, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

“On the commercial side of our business, we are working on a series of medical day spas and boutique hotel spaces. We look forward to future work in the restaurant space as the need returns, post-pandemic,” says Jones.

While they are relative newcomers to the area’s design scene, they are firmly planted on the North Shore. “This is our home. The North Shore has long been a place that has fostered the arts and creativity—pushing the boundaries to develop interesting works, investing in creatives to preserve the beauty and architecture of the area. We aspire to be a resource for the community rooted in the appreciation of historic architecture and design, but with an artful twist: creating couture environments with an edge of modernity,” explains Jones.

At an early age, Tony Karman recognized his life was not the life of an artist—even though he loved to draw and paint and grew up in an artistic household, he preferred to work with artists rather than as one.

“I never felt like I had the talent,” says Karman. “However, I loved—and still love—to create, so I knew it’d always be part of my life. And that has been my career for the past 40 years, working in performing and visual arts along with civic engagement. Those formative childhood years really stayed with me.”

When Karman first moved to Chicago in 1982, he worked on what was then the first international art fair in North and South America, the Chicago International Art Exposition, not realizing that 30 years later he’d be launching an international art fair of his own in the Windy City.

Between then and now, however, Karman worked throughout Chicago with organizations ranging from the League of Chicago Theatres, the Auditorium Theatre, and Merchandise Mart Properties to the Chicago City Council’s Committee on Special Events and Cultural Affairs, and the Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority.

“The Chicago International Art Exposition exposed me to another way to work with galleries separate from either working in a gallery or as an artist,” says Karman. “I had no grand plan at the time. It was simply a wonderful way to meet civic and cultural leaders in the city and to build a foundation for my career.”

After Art Chicago, as the exposition had come to be known, collapsed in 2006, it was saved by the Merchandise Mart.

Karman was then hired to run the show. His tenure there helped project Karman back into the interna tional arts community after his stints in City Hall and marketing for Chicago theaters.

After Karman left, he decided to launch a new fair that “was in keeping with the vision and aspirations of Chicago’s cultural community and its collectors and institutions.” Thus, EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art was born in 2012.

“The minute I announced in June 2011, I gained significant support from the civic and cultural community of Chicago,” recalls Karman. “My experience had shown me what a great international art fair could be, so I took a shot to do it my way. Our first fair was in September 2012 and put a giant flag in the sand: Chicago is back.”

“My experience had shown me what a great international art fair could be, so I took a shot to do it my way.”
SHERIDAN ROAD 99

The timing could not have been more perfect, Karman says. At the time, many leading artists had chosen to stay and work in the city rather than depart for the coasts as had so often been the case in the past, paving the way for other artists to do the same. Think visionaries like sculptor Nick Cave, painter Kerry James Marshall, and social practice installation artist Theaster Gates. They all proved one could have an international career but still live and work in the Midwest.

And the gallery scene was growing, museum leadership was strong, and galleries were building reputations worldwide. EXPO only then served to amplify what was already happening in Chicago, taking advantage of a singular convening moment.

Drawing upon the city’s rich history as a global destination for arts and culture, EXPO CHICAGO hosts more than 135 leading international exhibitors presented alongside one of the highest quality platforms for global contemporary art and culture, all to highlight the region’s contemporary arts community and inspire its collector base.

Running concurrently with the exposition, EXPO Art Week highlights the vast cultural opportunities that Chicago has to offer to collectors, dealers, art enthusiasts, and tourists. With EXPO CHICAGO as the centerpiece, the exposition joins together with over 45 of the city’s most prestigious cultural institutions for a citywide celebration of art and culture, including museum exhibitions, gallery openings, installations, public art projects, music, theater and dance performances, and special dining experiences.

“We had one shot to do it right,” says Karman. “I press awfully hard to make sure we present ourselves in a way that’s respectful to exhibitors and to the aspirations of the fair, which is to present critically-acclaimed programming, showcase brilliant dealers, and shine a spotlight on Chicago. Ultimately, though, we are in service to our exhibitors.”

EXPO returns this April to Navy Pier—after a twoyear hiatus thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic—with a diverse list of dealers and leading galleries. This year, EXPO will also launch its inaugural Director’s Summit, which will gather eight emerging art museum leaders from across the country for a series of conversations about the future of museum leadership and institutional reinvention.

The program will augment an expanded, year-round Curatorial Forum program alongside EXPO’s annual Curatorial Exchange, which together gather curators from nine countries to discuss shared perspectives, goals, and challenges facing the field. The exposition’s robust curatorial initiatives support its larger mission to foster the critical international creative dialogues taking place in the Midwest today.

“All of the pieces are in place to return stronger than ever,” says Karman. “This has not been an easy time. I’ve learned a lot about my own resilience. I truly cannot wait to welcome the world into our city again and start anew.”

GooseGüss Table. Originally designed by JMA for a German hotel created from the ruins of an old iron foundry, the table’s name was inspired by foundry forms and techniques. “Gussmetall” in German translates to “cast metal” and the word “guss” sounds like “goose.” Photography by Monica Kass Rogers

Jordan Mozer perches on a stool by his drafting table, head down and eyes focused as he sketches in the soft morning light. The table behind him is strewn with design-project flotsam for a house in Bangkok, restaurant consultations in Germany, and the Love in the ChromaZone work for his Annette and Dale Schuh Visiting Artist exhibitions this month at the University of Wisconsin. Stone samples, fabric swatches, schematic plans, and building models vie for space with piles of watercolor imaginings. Beyond that, the space housing Jordan Mozer & Associates’ (JMA) architecture and design firm soars to open-beamed heights. Sculptures, paintings, settees and sofas, tables, chairs, lamps, and whimsical whats-its are situated throughout—harmonious groupings of the signature work that once prompted the international design community to dub Mozer “Chicago’s other Jordan.”

While Michael Jordan flew on basketball courts, Jordan Mozer flew over oceans, designing projects from California to Korea, Japan to Germany. The Rolling Stones turned to him for stage set ideas, George Lucas for entertainment prototypes, Bill Kimpton and Bill Marriott for reimagining hotels, and a long line of others for restaurant designs. In each instance, JMA custom-made everything from seating to

sconces, tables to torchieres, producing limited-edition pieces full of such whimsy and shapeliness that several are included in the Art Institute of Chicago’s permanent collection.

“We designed all of these places as walk-in dreams,” says Mozer, “and made them real, ensuring that every detail was consistent with the concept.”

San Francisco’s Cypress Club was just one example of Mozer’s critically acclaimed restaurant design. There, Mozer captured the feeling of post-World War II American optimism with pudgy, friendly design that shaped everything from pillars and paneling to juke-boxy light fixtures and chairs curved like the fender of a ’48 Hudson.

Charmed by this and other Mozer designs, hotel and restaurant guests started calling the studio hoping

to purchase a mirror, a table, a sculpture, or chair they’d enjoyed on a night out or during a holiday stay.

“We were getting calls every month, but because we’d always thought of ourselves as restaurant and hotel people, for a long time we didn’t seriously respond,” says Mozer, “not realizing that the art we were making in the restaurant arena, would also work in people’s living spaces.”

Thankfully for design lovers, that’s all changed. Months before the pandemic, JMA converted a portion of its studio into a gallery showroom and began adapting its tables, chairs, lighting, and decorative sculpture designs for residences.

It was fortuitous timing and a great fit for the firm. Karen Lilly Mozer, Mozer’s wife and co-principal, specializes in residential interiors and has been busy throughout the pandemic.

“While spending so much time at home, people have begun to pay more attention to details they’ve long overlooked or projects they’ve been putting off and seem more invested than ever in expressing them-

selves through the design of their spaces,” says Karen. “Practically, people now want or need their homes to simultaneously function as offices, restaurants, spas, and gyms.”

“My job is to help clients understand how they might live most fully in the home space” she adds, “by exploring what they most enjoy functionally and aesthetically, what possessions give them the greatest and the least pleasure, and what elements we can bring in to round all of this out, helping their home to become a calm and nurturing reflection of themselves.”

This has led to more demand for Mozer’s residential design items, as well as collaborations between Mozer and his wife, creating custom furnishings for residences that borrow from previous work.

Many of the items are grouped in two collections available through the company’s website or by appointment at the studio gallery. Titled “HousePets” and “HousePlants” the collections show Mozer’s penchant for whimsical anthropomorphism and organic shapes. It’s a penchant that goes back to his childhood in Highland Park. “My mom was an advertising executive during the Madmen era, as well as being an

artist and sculptor. I used to spend my free time in her studio. And my dad was a doctor who was happy to answer my questions about biology, which fascinated me. I spent a lot of time in the ravines, collecting little creatures and bits of nature, looking under rocks, and fishing. I became obsessed with certain plants and creatures, both living and extinct, and my earliest drawings and paintings combined my favorite elements of these—an elephant’s foot, the wings of a bat, the nose of an aardvark, into new creatures within imagined natural environments.”

This childhood obsession is referenced in several HousePet pieces. A side table dubbed GooseGüss has

a curving gooseneck rising above three elegant legs while the Creature table looks like a tiny fawn, poised to leap.

In HousePlants, organic themes prevail. There are Truffula lamps and tables inspired by the Truffula trees in Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, plus a collection of twiggy lamps, chairs, coat racks, and candlesticks inspired by curly willow.

The opportunity to live with such pets and plants has the potential to make home life richer. “No one could foresee the challenges to our lives that would come about because of COVID,” sums Mozer. “Forced to be homebound, people have become more reflective and need so much more from the spaces in which they live. It’s clear that cultivating spaces that are both functional and expressive, is helpful and important.”

Winnetka’s Alicia Segal believes getting to know the artist and their process builds a better art collection. LOVE the ARTIST & the ART WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST SHERIDAN ROAD 108 Katie Loomis Untitled #003-11 2012 Acrylic and flasche on canvas 60 x 60 inches

Alicia Segal still remembers waking up each morning to the painting that hung over her childhood bed.

Tinted in hues of pink and blue dye and textured with glue, the abstract painting by her mother Judith was full of feeling. “I loved that painting so much,” Segal recalls. “I used to reach up and touch it, tracing my fingers over the patterns.”

Judith’s paintings, as well as nature photography from Segal’s father Bernard, were displayed throughout the home inspiring Segal and setting a pattern of personal connection to art that would deeply influence her as an adult.

“It’s always been important to me not only to love the artworks that I choose for my home but to have a connection with the artist,” she says. “As a child, it was meaningful to see my parents making things and to feel the value they placed on the things we kids made. I think that’s what propelled me into the world as an artist, collector, and co-founder of Unison, a modern home goods company, with my husband, Robert.”

The couple was surrounded by artists in every medium—from metal arts to performance art, textile arts to painting—while getting degrees at the Rhode Island School of Design and during their five years in Helsinki working for Marimekko. In these fertile environments, Segal was always curious about each artist’s process. “Understanding the time and care it takes to mix the oils, or set up in nature, or design the pattern, or cut the paper ... it builds a much greater appreciation for the art,” she says.

This abiding appreciation is apparent as Segal talks about the art that fills her home. Paintings, paper collages, fiber art, sculptures, and drawings animate and brighten every room. Among them, works from artist Katie Loomis welcome guests into the foyer and flank the fireplace in the living room. Intricate paper collages by Stephen Eichhorn are displayed on the ground floor and second level. And a new canvas by Chad Kouri is waiting to be hung.

In each instance, the Segals got to know the artist first and then continued the relationship. This supported the artist and helped the Segals build a better art collection.

Katie Loomis Untitled #001-12 2012 Acrylic on canvas 72 x 72 inches

“We first met Stephen Eichhorn when he allowed us to do a photo shoot at his home for Unison,” Segal recalls. “We really hit it off and were so struck by the beauty of his work but, at the time, could only afford a small piece.”

Years later, just after moving into their current home in Winnetka, Segal saw a J.Crew catalog prominently featuring Eichhorn’s latest works, “I said, ‘Robert! We have to buy these right away!’” Segal recalls, laughing. “I just didn’t want them to end up in J.Crew headquarters or something.”

The Segals not only bought the two Eichhorn intricate cut-paper collage works, which are now mounted in the dining room, “but we had him bring all of his work to the house and were thrilled to find perfect places for many of the pieces.”

The same thing happened with works from Katie Loomis. “We first found Katie when she was a student at the Art Institute of Chicago and her work was displayed at Lula Café,” says Segal. “Both Robert and I felt that her work was so relaxing and meditative. So, just as we did with Stephen, we invited her to bring all of her work to the house. Five of her pieces were perfect for the living room and foyer.”

Does Segal have any advice for others who are starting to collect art for their homes?

“The work really has to touch you,” Segal offers. “You have to love the scale of the piece, and

the colors and have an appreciation for or the desire to learn about how it was made. I say that because works of art are not just compositions, they are alive with the thoughts and process of the person who made them.”

She continues, “Maintaining a connection to the artist also allows you to grow your collection as the artist creates new works. Here in Chicago, there are so many amazing artists, and they’re not all showing in famous galleries or at the Art Institute. I support galleries, but I also think that some of the greatest new work can be found at student exhibitions where artists are at a creative peak but are still very affordable.”

The Segals’ approach to building their home art collection is echoed in their support of artists at Unison. In celebration of its 15th year in 2021, Unison collaborated with many of its artist partners to create limited edition products. They also were chosen by famed British designer Aaron Probyn as the exclusive U.S. retailer for his debut collection of home goods.

What sets you apart from the competition? When we propose a project, our clients know they are getting an Airoom project with unmatched quality and expertise, and exceptional service. Our team, our construction process, our knowledge base, our design skills, and our innovative approach are superior to others. Not to mention that all of our work is backed by a 10-year service warranty.

Past trends you would like to see return? Trends come and go, and each of our projects is unique and tailor made for our clients. To accomplish that, we spend hours with each client personalizing every last detail. We see our style as enduring without focusing on what is in vogue.

Trends on the horizon? We guide our clients to work on making their homes timeless by not cornering themselves into a traditional, transitional, or contemporary style. One trend that we do see developing further is a desire for outdoor living spaces. What was once reserved for more favorable year-round environments has now become something that almost every homeowner in any climate can enjoy thanks to new heating technologies.

Favorite Mantra? “Measure twice, cut once.” We take deliberate care to look where others do not; execution always lies in the details.

Most looking forward to in 2022? One of the things we are most excited about is our growing real estate division. Our focus has been on finding unique properties or land that allow us to

create a one-of-a-kind Airoom masterpiece. Our newest project is an 8,000-square-foot luxury home sitting on a half acre lot in Winnetka. It’s exciting because it lets us be creative on every level of the process. From design to construction, it’s 100 per cent a product from the entire Airoom Team.

Airoom is located at 6825 N. Lincoln Avenue in Lincolnwood. For more information, call 847-325-5447 or visit airoom.com.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

For more than 25 years, Jamie Schachtel, owner and Head Designer at Jamie Schachtel Design Group (JSDG), has been at the forefront of design and fashion. After beginning her career as a women’s couture clothing designer and manufacturer, her interest in home design blossomed and she started designing children’s rooms while owning a high-end retail furniture store in Lincoln Park. Realizing she had immense passion and talent in the field, Schachtel opened her own eponymous, full-service design studio and showroom 19 years ago. As one of the Chicago area’s premier interior designers, her highest goal is to capture each client’s unique personality in their homes and make them absolutely beautiful.

Why you love what you do? At JSDG, we pride ourselves on changing living spaces, thereby changing habits, lifestyles, and family relationships by giving them a functional space to gather and live.

What sets you apart from your competition? Our team. We are full-service with a team of six with a showroom where we meet with clients.

Best thing about 2021 was? JSDG went into high gear to handle the increased demand, adding two more team members who turned out to be the perfect fit for our growing firm.

Past trends you’d like to see return? Arched openings, beautiful crown moldings, and rounded sofas.

Trends on the horizon? I’m definitely seeing more rounded uphol stery, chunkier, rounded dining chairs, layered textures and clean lines, monochromatic hues with pops of color, and less open floor plans.

Best advice you’ve given? Wait 48 hours after furniture, rugs, art, or lighting is installed to react.

Where do you draw inspiration from? Nature including the trees, ocean, and sky; and travel from traveling to Europe and all many beautiful areas of this country.

Transforming a House into a “Home”

Founder of her eponymous design firm, Jessica Margot takes a collaborative and holistic approach to interior design, where clients’ personality, taste, and functional needs are incorporated to create unique and memorable living spaces. Among other style influences, she and her team creatively mix classic pieces, custom furniture, and unexpected finds to create surroundings that are attuned to each client’s individuality.

Why do you love what you do? I receive great joy in connect ing with my clients on an intimate level and helping them transform their house into a home. Each project is a new and different challenge; I like to think I have a natural instinct for creating beautiful environments for each client.

What sets you apart from your competition? My passion and adaptability allow me to consider the architectural style of the home and my client’s needs, then tailor the design accordingly.

Past trends you’d like to see return? I would like to see the integration of more pops of color throughout the home.

Trends on the horizon? Clients want spaces that express who they are, and often they cannot be defined by one category. Juxtaposing styles, such as minimalistic with a touch of classic detailed elements, is on the rise.

Where do you draw inspiration from? Everywhere! Wheth er it’s at a restaurant, destination, or in nature, I am always inspired by the elements and people around me.

Favorite mantra? “Love what you do,” because, if you love what you do, you’re going to do it well!

CUSTOMERS COME FIRST

Doug Stein bought Wilmette-based Kashian Brothers in 2004 because he loved their customer service. He grew the business, first by adding a second location in Lake Forest, and bringing his wife Jean in to run it, then by adding kitchen and bath remodeling. He was always guided by the idea of making the experience better for his customers. “I always thought there should be one place to take care of a whole room upgrade or an entire kitchen remodel,” says Stein, who says his start-to-finish model is much better for the customer, saving time, money, and ensuring the design and execution work well together.

What does your company pride itself on? Because we take care of the entire project, from start-to-finish, the new kitch en or bath is personalized just for each customer. And the experience is actually easy and enjoyable for them.

What sets you apart from your competition? We listen really well, asking what is important to the client before every project and really listening to their answers. With this information, we design and install something that will be uniquely theirs.

Interesting tidbit? We’ve never done the same project twice. Seriously, after 18 years in business, no two have ever been the same.

Trends on the horizon? The kitchen island is rapidly be coming a statement piece for the whole house. The look and design of the island can transform your kitchen into a place that seamlessly allows work, school, food prep, and eating at the same time. And there are some dazzling ways to use quartz so the whole kitchen pops!

Favorite Mantra? Love your floors and home for life. Seriously, you spend so much time in your home with your family. You really should love what you have.

As a member of ASID and with a BA from Harrington Institute of Interior Design, she taps into her vast network, design expertise, and creative intuition to assist discerning clients from Chicago and its affluent suburbs to Florida and California.

Why you love what you do? Every new project is like starting a new art project with a blank canvas. I love getting inspired by many different elements, including a piece of furniture or art that acts as the muse for the space.

What sets you apart from your competition? I prioritize listening to my clients to ensure their living spaces reflect their lifestyles.

Best thing about 2021 was? Despite the pandemic, I have really loved close family time, and I have been fortunate to work as an Allied Member of ASID throughout this tumultuous time.

Past trends you’d like to see return? Color, color, color!

Trends on the horizon? I see more natural materials trending with an eye toward simplicity and clean lines.

Best advice you’ve given? Design is very personal. Don’t be swayed by what’s popular at the moment. Trends fade and the space you live in should feel like a sanctuary that you always want to come home to.

Where do you draw inspiration from? Everywhere. I love to travel and see elements of design from spaces all over the world, and I draw inspiration from my clients’ own art collections and sense of style.

Conveniently located on the North Shore, the Lewis design consultants help you design the perfect space for every home, while having fun in the process.

Why you love what you do? Making a space beautiful and helping clients see their inspirations brought to life. It brings so much joy to our homeowners and our team.

What sets you apart from your competition? Our selection is outstanding and includes an extensive line of in-stock products in cluding carpet, tile, vinyl, countertops, and area rugs. Our in-stock collections provide the very best in quality, value, and design, and they are our biggest competitive advantage. Trends on the horizon? One of the top flooring trends is large

format tile—it’s the perfect way to make a space look and feel big ger and is easier to clean with fewer grout lines. It’s also showing up in the bathroom. We’re seeing marble, granite, and quartz slabs used on shower walls, rather than tile with heavily grouted shower walls.

SELLING THE SHORE

ANNIKA VALDISERRI

An award-winning broker with the @ properties offices in Winnetka and Gold Coast in Chicago, Valdiserri moved to the U.S. from Sweden when she was in her 20s and started a career in event planning and fashion before finding her calling in real estate. She joined @properties 13 years ago, honing her specialty in helping expats from around the world find their dream homes on the North Shore and in Chicago. She has since developed a large referral business.

Why you love what you do? I get to meet people from all over the world and help them find a house—a home! Selling or buying your home is a very intimate affair, where communication and trust are key. To be part of that journey and knowing I can help is so very special to me.

What sets you apart from your competition? I am very comfortable where I am at and with what I can bring to the table. People who choose to work with me know I only want what is best for them.

Best thing about 2021 was? With the pan demic changing our needs and interests, I was able to know what buyers and sellers needed in both areas. I had 35 transactions and put $45 million under contract.

Best advice you’ve given? To be ready for the real estate emotional roller coaster and that clients need to get used to seeing and talking to me—a lot!

Annika Valdiserri is with @properites on the North Shore and in Chicago. For more information, call 312-504-5020 or visit atproperties.com/agents/annikavaldiserri/ or annikav.com.

ALY AND JUSTIN TESAR

This husband-and-wife team that makes up The Tesar Group with Compass’ Winnetka office met while working as lifeguards at the Gillson Park beach and have been together ever since. They have a deep understanding of the North Shore—from the perspective of parents raising a child here and as top real estate brokers helping countless clients navigate the ins and outs of each community.

Why you love what you do? Every day is a new adventure, and you get a glimpse into the lives of so many wonderful people.

What sets you apart from your competition? As a married couple with two very different skill sets, our clients really benefit from our teamwork and different strengths.

Best thing about 2021 was? We regained a true appreciation for spending quality time with family and friends. And, while navigating this market has been very challenging for our buyers with record-low inventory, we were able to set and exceed our goals.

Trends on the horizon? For obvious reasons, some are regret-

ting the fully open, one huge-room open floor plan concept, and are leaning toward more traditional layouts.

Best advice you’ve given? No home is ever perfect. Focus on the big picture rather than the little things that might turn you off at first glance.

Most looking forward to in 2022? This will continue to be a sellers’ market, and we hope that sellers take advantage of this so we can see new inventory.

The Tesar Group is with Compass’s Winnetka office. For more information, call 847-507-2599 or visit thetesargroup.com.

PUBLISHER’S PROFILE COLLEGE BOUND

Laura George Consulting (LGC) offers one of the only all-inclusive programs on the North Shore for all of your test prep and college consulting needs.

With offices in both Barrington and Lincolnshire, the team of experts at LGC partners with families and students throughout each step of the college application journey. LGC provides concierge-level support and offers comprehensive services ranging from customized ACT/SAT tutoring to college search and selection guidance to college essay coaching and more. The company’s goal is to relieve some college application process stress for both teenagers and their families. As any parent who has been through this knows, the process has changed greatly since the previous generation applied to college, making it complicated for both parents and students to confidently navigate.

Having spent her early career in consumer products marketing with Kimberly-Clark and Saputo, LGC founder Laura George combined her various educational and professional experiences when she decided to establish a college consulting business.

“I have always loved writing, learning about people’s stories, and empowering others to realize their full potential. By putting my different skills and life experiences together, I realized a passion for partnering with families and students on the journey to college,” George says.

George attended Duke University and majored in psychology. She then worked in advertising before attending Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. “I served as a full-time member of the Kellogg admissions committee when I was an MBA student at Northwestern, and I thought it was a fantastic way to give back to the school. I was selected as one of a handful of students to serve in this volunteer role, and it was really fascinating to learn how to evaluate incoming candidates.”

That generosity of spirit and invaluable experience would come in handy years later.

George and her husband are the proud parents of four sons. After she had her eldest over 19 years ago, she decided to stop working outside the home and pursue her entrepreneurial interests.

“One day my husband, who works in finance, said he had some younger financial guys coming up through his company who wanted to apply to business school. He asked, ‘you could help them with their essays, right?’ And I said, ‘sure, I’d love to do that. I love stories. I love to write. I love to help people.’”

That experience helped spark her interest and soon after that, George answered a local ad seeking skilled test-takers, received training to become an ACT tutor, and went on to teach large group classes in an after-school program at an area high school. But George didn’t care for the fact that she couldn’t effectively personalize her instruction to best meet each of her students’ specific needs. When neighbors heard about this role, they began requesting that she tutor their children individually, and an idea took shape.

“I had been looking at the landscape of what was happening on the North Shore and recognized there were mainly businesses that specialized in only one part of the college process: only test prep or only college consulting or essay coaching. I loved to do all of those things. I soon formed a vision to create a comprehensive college consulting firm where people could work with one trusted expert throughout the journey to college, from navigating high school course selection to researching colleges and forming a balanced list of best-fit schools to obtaining customized tutoring in order to maximize their test scores to benefiting from guidance on how to write the most authentic, compelling essays.” At first, George started on her own. After launching an informative Facebook group, Parents of College Bound Kids, and developing a strong reputation in North Shore communities, George saw demand for her services steadily increase and began to gradually add carefully-selected experts to her team. Over the past six years, LGC has continued to grow, always seeking to anticipate new ways in which the team can guide and support families and students by developing new offerings.

As stated on her website, George “founded LGC to help families and students chart a clear path forward to their best-fit colleges. Over time, I have thoughtfully assembled an expert team of college consultants, essay coaches, ACT/SAT tutors, and parent liaisons. We seek to partner with your family and your child to meet you where you are in the process.”

Laura George Consulting is located at 200 Applebee Street, Suite 211 in Barrington, and at 300 Village Green, Suite 235 in Lincolnshire, 847-363-6780. For more information visit laurageorgeconsulting.com.

No Luck Finding Your Next Home?

We will help you discover your dream home in this challenging market.

We had the most wonderful experience with The Flanagan Group. Maddie was so knowledgeable and understanding throughout our whole home buying process. She really knew exactly what we wanted. Annie is an absolute pro and together they make such a great team! The whole experience was totally seamless. Highly recommend!

Maddie and Annie knew exactly what we were looking for in a house. Before the house even went on the market, they reached out to the listing broker and got additional information and scheduled a time for us to see the house. They educated us throughout the process, especially during the negotiation phase. They truly want to make sure you are happy with your purchase rather than just making another sale.

The process of working with the Flanagan Group was flawless. For a first-time home buyer I had a lot of questions and uncertainty around what was expected of me and what to look for. The Flanagan Group helped to shepherd me through my questions and anticipate my needs. 10/10 would recommend them to all my friends and family.

A GLOWING AGENT

Glo Rolighed may not have taken the traditional path to becoming a star at @properties and one of the most successful North Shore realtors, but there is no doubt that she was always destined to shine.

After receiving a degree in voice and theatre from Northwestern University, she worked as a lead singer for three years on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and then for three more years behind the scenes at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

“My background in theater definitely makes me a people person,” Rolighed says. When speaking of her current profession, she’s nothing if not passionate. “I love it. It’s so much fun.”

Rolighed thrives on connection and gets energy from the people around her. This is perhaps why she sincerely says that she has become friends with every one of her clients.

After working at the Lyric, Rolighed attended DePaul University and received an MBA. A close friend who worked in the industry suggested she should try real estate and Rolighed has never looked back.

Her twenty-plus years of experience in the business, including residential sales, consulting, and relocation services, has evolved from living in the communities she serves. From Lake Forest to Chicago along the North Shore, she has experienced first-hand the nuances of these wonderful towns, villages, and cities. “After all, a home is more than the walls that surround it, but an experience—parks and playgrounds, restaurants and retreats—every town has a unique offering.”

“My family has lived in this area for five generations. I really know the neighborhoods and the things that make those places special and unique. I’ve watched things grow and evolve in so many ways. This background in the community is useful in helping my clients find their perfect place,” Rolighed says.

She loves “how the North Shore communities take these big

environments and make them instantly small; where you can go into a restaurant and people recognize you, or enter a coffee shop and the server knows your order, or visit local businesses and they customize everything for you. It’s just that small sense of community and people are so nice here.”

Her number one favorite thing about the area? “Lake Michigan. It is such a treasure and most people don’t realize that the lake is as large as it is.”

Rolighed feels blessed to be able to gain insight and information from her mom “who is an interior designer and arguably, an interior architect. I learned a lot about the architecture, interior design, and staging business from my mom.”

It is no surprise that Rolighed is very involved locally and serves on the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Women’s Board, the Women’s Board of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Garden Guild of Winnetka, and as president of the Board of Directors at Piven Theatre Workshop in Evanston, to name a few.

Rolighed has two daughters, both of whom also participated in theater in high school. “They were leading ladies, actresses, singers, and dancers. One of the most amazing things was watching them get their first roles on the stage. To see their transformations from a personality standpoint and how their confidence just came out of nowhere, was such an incredible inspiration. And you know, I look at that and I think every single person in this world should take an improv class or jump on the stage once in their lives because if you do, the skillset you gain is totally applicable to any single job you will have in your life.”

Glo Rolighed’s @properties office is located at 30 Green Bay Road in Winnetka. For more information, call 847-881-0200 or email glo@atproperties.com. PROFILE

Finally a laser without significant downtime.

Cool Peel treats facial photo-aged skin, reduces fine lines, sun damage, and pore size while improving skin texture with no real downtime. CO2 laser treatments just became a lot cooler.

The Cool Peel leverages the exclusive H-Pulse a high-peak-power short pulse that delivers a fully-ablative treatment without causing thermal damage to surrounding tissue. Without thermal damage, downtime is drastically minimized. At the same time, the system delivers impressive superficial, skin resurfacing results.

Treatments can be tailored to select the precise power, density, and pulse duration needed to optimize treatments.

The Cool Peel allows the versatility of four pulse modes depending on where and what you want to treat. The procedure is quick and virtually pain-free. Topical numbing agents are usually not needed, so large areas of the body can quickly and effectively be treated at one time. Post-op there is minimal if any discomfort. The skin feels a little dry and begins peeling or flaking in days leaving you with smooth, radiant skin.

Presently this treatment is available in the Glenview office exclusively. For additional information, visit skindeepmedicalspa.com or call the Glenview location 847-901-0800.

PARTING WORDS

FASHION FORWARD

A tête-à-tête with Liz Lange.

Fashion designer and entrepreneur Liz Lange thought she might write a memoir one day but never planned on a podcast. Then again, creating a namesake clothing label and selling it for millions of dollars was not on the radar either early in her career. “I think I was naive and I’m a risk-taker,” shares Lange, who recalls being among the first luxury brands to collaborate with Target, despite investors and mentors cautioning against the move. There was also a profitable partnership with Nike and a lucrative spot on the Home Shopping Network. It might be called an embarrassment of riches, except wealth is the one thing Lange did bank on for her future.

“I always knew we had this wild life throughout my childhood,” says Lange of the recent release of her new podcast The Just Enough Family (available for download on Apple and Spotify). The host, Lange’s friend, Ariel Levy, an author and writer for The New Yorker sat down with Lange for a one-off recording that turned into an eight-part series. Lange likens aspects of her experience growing up with a close-knit multi-generational clan to the dynamics portrayed in TV dramas such as HBO’s Succession. Her uncle, Saul Steinberg, the famous corporate titan of the 1980s, had amassed the largest self-made fortune in the United States by age 30 and was a billionaire by the time he turned 40. His right hand was Lange’s father, and many other relatives were on the company payroll. The tales are set against a backdrop of fancy Park Avenue apartments, lavish Long Island estates, plush private planes, and elite private schools, and recall very public affairs, both extravagant events and those of the heart. All that glamour was not lost on Lange, even when the money ultimately was lost in a bankruptcy filing that divided assets and family members. By that point, however, she had already learned to value the most important part of her legacy—establishing her own.

Lange graduated from Brown University and went straight to work at Vogue magazine. A small loan from her parents soon helped with the debut of Liz Lange Maternity. After hearing expecting friends and colleagues complain of a lack in stylish options, she sensed a market gap. Initially opened as a “by appointment only” Manhattan showroom, stand-alone stores quickly turned up in major cities around the country. The business grew along with Lange; she married and had a son and daughter. “I didn’t set out to be a feminist, but this was the late ‘90s/early 2000s and the workforce landscape was shifting,” notes Lange, “power suits were in, and women didn’t want to lose that presence for any period of time, even nine months.” Her intuition for more form-fitting ensembles, that accentuated the obvious rather than concealing it, proved sensational. A direct-to-consumer approach became key in her past and present business models. “Every customer service email inquiry goes directly to me and I respond back—it takes a few minutes, makes the client feel good and feel heard, and lets me know what is and isn’t working way better than numbers or margins.”

Now with the acquisition of a new venture, Figue, a luxury collection of women’s dresses and soft separates that she aims to expand into a full beach to city 24/7 lifestyle brand, Lange is once

more focused on a signature look. “I love kaftans,” she proclaims of the popular 1970s, flowy, comfortable, gown-like ensembles. Pieces are done in cottons and silks artfully embellished with patterns, prints, and bejeweled stones. She favors them for dress in her vacation getaway in Palm Beach (published in Elle Decor, March 2020), and summer home in East Hampton. The interiors of the former are chic and full of color, done in collaboration with Lange’s close friend from college, Jonathan Adler, the furniture designer and proprietor. The latter is known as Grey Gardens, with previous residents including the Washington Post’s Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, and Big and Little Edie Beale, once subjects of a 1975 documentary and cousins of Jacqueline Kennedy. “I’m much too old, or dare I say at this point, a little too private about myself to share selfies,” confesses Lange, admitting her popular Instagram account where she posts classic Hollywood movie stills or vintage celebrity paparazzi images has become a favorite pastime. Each photo is accompanied by her commentary, often a personal anecdote, typically relatable and attuned to what truth might be going on behind the scenes. “My feeling is why do we all have to pretend?” she asks, with a laugh, and intent on coming by her story honestly.
