NATIONAL JEWELER: HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

National Jeweler, the leading New York-based news source for jewelry industry insiders, has chosen the latest group of inductees for its prestigious Retailer Hall of Fame. Stan and Ingrid Razny, second-generation owners of Razny Jewelers, are receiving the 2023 honor as forward-thinking multi-store independent jewelers.*

WATCHPRO FEATURES

TALKING TIMEPIECES:

Editor and founder of WatchPro, Rob Corder, sat with Stan Razny to talk timepieces, discuss the ever-changing landscape of the luxury watch market, and breakdown how family-owned independents provide the value that direct-to-consumer brands struggle to match.

Deemed “The Big Interview,” it also showed how seriously Razny Jewelers takes its position as the only authorized dealer for Patek Philippe in a territory that stretches across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin, surpassing 220,000 square miles.*

RAZNY JEWELERS NAMED TOP 100:

Razny Jewelers is honored to have made this year’s Hot 100 list in the Retail Power Players categoary. Published by WatchPro magazine, the premier publication for news on timepieces and jewelry for collectors around the globe, this designation is reserved for elite American jewelers who display exceptional growth and success.*

AS SEEN IN VOGUE

Over 75 years ago, the Razny family immigrated to America with the vision of building a legacy they could pass on to their children. Today, they are proud to have developed their dream into something far grander than they could have imagined. Ingrid Razny and Christine Razny-Porter share their family’s story in this September’s issue of Vogue Magazine.*

EDITOR’S NOTE

ctober is a favorite month for many who love the crisp air, beautiful leaves, and the opportunity to express themselves through masterful Halloween displays. I love it because it is the month in which my son was born. Jeffrey is turning 16 mid-month. Every cliché about not blinking because it goes too fast is true. I can attest that the time it took him to go from driving a play car to driving for real flew by in a flash.

Another reason to love October is that it’s our Power Women issue. I admire this group of dynamos to my core. They are the women all women aspire to be. They are accomplished entrepreneurs, devoted philanthropists, and good friends and neighbors. I know you’ll enjoy getting to know each one of them better.

This month’s Dinner Date takes us to Vinny’s Clam Bar. You’ll want to visit this spot for the inspired design and incredible food. It’s a beautiful spot with a sense of humor, which I think we can all appreciate.

Country Vs. Town introduces us to Lisa DeCourcy, who grew up in the area and is now raising her three children here. She’s a corporate mover and shaker and an entrepreneur who is also a committed volunteer at Prospect School and

Owith the Clarendon Hills chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary.

This month is the Wellness House Ball, and we have the inside scoop from co-chairs Meaghan Daly and Briana Murry in Radiance in Action

Hinsdale’s Dylan Singla is also in action these days. The high school senior has found a way to combine sustainability and artificial intelligence in his website, podcast, and toolkit. Read about it in A World of Good

You’ll also meet attorney John Botti, who shares the philosophy of his firm, Botti Law, and Dr. Amjad Ahmad, the top oculofacial surgeon in the Chicago region in our Publisher’s Profiles

For a last jolt of summer energy, check our Living + Giving section for a couple of lively events. Enjoy the beautiful weather, take us with you to the lake house for leaf watching, and do be in touch with news and happenings.

Frankenstein at The Joffrey

For those who like their spooky season to be a little more refined, this critically acclaimed adaptation of Mary Shelly’s gothic masterpiece is a moving tale of life, death, love, and identity. Set to Lowell Liebermann’s original score and brought to life with vivid makeup artistry and stunning stage design, this must-see Chicago premiere is one of the most innovative works of ballet today. Frankenstein takes the audience on a captivating journey through a series of unfortunate events. Liam Scarlett’s choreography and production bring Shelly’s novel to life, revealing the beautiful allegory of the human condition. October 12 – 22, joffrey.org

Have you ever been curious about the intricate process behind the creation of the iconic Kelly bag by Hermès? Now is the perfect opportunity to satisfy that curiosity. When Hermès unveils its extensive renovation on Oak Street this coming October, the renowned French design house will provide Chicago with a glimpse into its rich heritage. Hermès in the Making is a unique opportunity for an intimate view of the skilled artisans who transform craftsmanship into true artistry. Taking place at Union Station from Friday, October 27 through Wednesday, November 1, Hermès in the Making, will bring the brand’s master leatherworkers, porcelain craftsmen, watch artisans, silk specialists, and exquisite jewelers into a single space. Here, they will not only showcase their techniques but also engage in real-time creation of their pieces.

This extraordinary experience is a Midwestern exclusive, with Chicago following a wildly successful stint in Troy, Michigan. It’s a testament to the devotion of local customers to the brand, for which the company is grateful. How wonderful to experience the artistry behind these icons of style. Truly special, and just a train ride away. Make a day of it with a visit to the refreshed boutique and lunch along the river for the ultimate parallels between sister cities Chicago and Paris. hermes.com/us/en/content/300493-hermes-inthe-making-troy/

LISA DECOURCY

is a native of the Western Suburbs and graduated from Hinsdale Central High School. Growing up she absolutely loved and cherished how her family did everything together, whether it be dinners together, going to the temple, vacations around the world, or even simple movie nights.

While at Western Michigan University, she met her husband, Jason. The couple made Chicago their home after marriage, spending nearly a decade in the South Loop. When their second daughter was on her way, Lisa and Jason decided it was time to reclaim their suburbanite heritage. The family landed in Clarendon Hills, where Jason’s family lived when he was born, before moving to Michigan.

They revel in introducing their three children, Aria (11), Mila (8) and Leo (3), as well as a 3-year-old doodle named Arthur, to the traditions, holidays, and amazing food of their two cultures.

This dynamic mama is busy. She has held various roles at a Fortune 500 company, focusing on sales, business development, and strategic initiatives that contribute to the company’s success and play a pivotal role in driving its growth. She’s also an entrepreneur with a mobile threading business called “ My Browtique by Lisa .” The business caters to those on the constant go and want the convenience of someone coming to them. She says, “My Browtique is an amazing outlet that allows me to work with our amazing local community. The business has grown tremendously and fills a niche that was needed in our community.”

Lisa finds time to volunteer, saying, “From working in soup kitchens to being a volunteer at Hinsdale Hospital in high school and now being involved in my local philanthropy chapters, giving back to the community has been a passion of mine since childhood.”

She joined Clarendon Hills Infant Welfare in 2019 and has managed various roles from social chair, silent auction, and online luminaria sales. She appreciates this amazing tight knit group of ladies that roll up their sleeves to come together to raise money for a great cause. Advice to younger self: ALWAYS be YOU and don’t change for anyone. Live life to the fullest and don’t look back. On my reading stack: Currently, I am loving Daisy Jones & The Six and I just finished the Colleen Hoover Series (It Starts with Us and It Ends with Us). I follow @bookandachai on Instagram for all my new book reads. Favorite Music: I am a huge pop fan: Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, and of course Taylor Swift as my girls listen and dance to her music all day. And when life gets too hectic, we like to try and unwind to some Frank Sinatra classics. Guilty Pleasure: Oberweis Honey Cashew Ice Cream – LOVE it! Favorite Workout: Peloton and walking outside. In the Spring/ Summer months taking walks with my girls are the best! We like to talk about all sorts of different topics and enjoy having a good laugh, it tends to make walking miles so much

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY

Your Style: Workout clothes from Game Set and Style, jeans, puff sleeve sweatshirt, and tennis shoes in between pickup and being my kids Uber driver. I follow some fun bloggers for Amazon and Target finds. Favorite Walk: Saturday morning walking from Clarendon Hills to Page’s for breakfast with a few parks stops on the way. Can’t leave the house without: A fanny pack as I love to be hands free. I’m not a handbag girl due to shuffling three kids around. Best places to celebrate: Il Mio has a great vibe in Clarendon Hills, with gluten free and vegetarian options, and they have a great team. Hidden Gem: The Hinsdale Fruit Store is my absolute go to lunch for the best salad bar. Shree Restaurant has the best vegetarian Indian food. Best thing about the town: I love seeing the town growing with more businesses, restaurants, and shops that tailor to everyone. The perfect day is: Heading to the park in the morning, followed by a coffee at Tierra Distillery and lunch at Village Gourmet. As for the evening, walking into downtown Clarendon Hills with our kids to grab a bite to eat and a night cap for the kids at Daily Scoop (and a drink for mom and dad at Open Door). Favorite Festival/ special event: The Clarendon Hills Infant Welfare Benefit is always amazing and so is Daisy Days - I love having a fun carnival weekend right at our doorstep. Shop: I’m a big advocate of supporting local and usually purchase gifts, accessories, and the occasional trendy outfit for the weekend at Vintage Charm. English Garden always gets me with their fresh flowers and plants. Best thing in the country: All of the amazing friends we have met since moving here… everywhere feels like extended family.

easier. Best Grooming Tip: I always ensure my eyebrows are tightly threaded and shaped. I am currently addicted to the Elta D Skincare Facial Sunscreen cream from Sheth Dermatology. Fall or Halloween Tradition: The Fall is for pumpkin patches The Witches Ride and Fall Fest in Clarendon Hills have both become fun annual events, and our family tradition is carving pumpkins the night before Halloween while watching a scary movie. Fall also brings one of the biggest holidays in our Indian culture, Diwali, “The Festival of Lights.” This five-day celebration symbolizes victory of light over darkness, good over evil, great food and bringing families together.

WHEN IN TOWN

Your style is: Kut brand jeans with a sweater and flats. I am starting to wear more vibrant bright colors and patterns. Favorite Walk? Viewing the skyline while walking along the lake by Museum Cam pus never gets old This was our nightly walk when liv ing in the city. Can’t leave my house? Phone, Stan ley Water Cup, and a cute versatile fanny pack to be hands free. I like to think I’m basically redefining the suburban mom. Places to Celebrate: Fig and Olive and Gibson’s Italia. Great Food is important, but an amazing ambiance is what I tend to remember. Shops: I love walking the streets of Lincoln Park and strolling through all the cute boutiques. Quick Bite or hidden gem: Summer House Santa Monica is a household favorite, we also love Flo & Santos Favorite Festival: The Old Town Art Festival.

Radiance in Action

Wellness House continues to shine as

Wellness House is woven into the texture of our community. We walk with the Crown Royals team and thousands of others in May and come October, we’re inspired at the Wellness House Ball. Always one of the most elegant evenings of the year, it’s also the most moving as the stories shared are those of hope, love, and strength. Last year there were 38,366 visits to Wellness House. It’s no wonder then, that this beloved event shines its radiant light on all the good that is accomplished in this very special place.

Taking place on Saturday, October 21 at the Geraghty Chicago, “Radiance” will celebrate the mission and impact of Wellness House and raise funds for its continued work under the warm glow of golden sunbursts and round tables, we

Co-Chairs Meaghan and Sean Daly and Briana and Peter Murray are guiding a stellar committee in presenting a memorable evening recognizing the many ways that Wellness House makes an impact on people with cancer. Cocktails and dinner will be followed by a live auction and paddle raise, along with a videotaped story from a Wellness House participant. Capping off this evening of impact, Deja Vu will provide live music with dancing until midnight.

Briana Murray came to know Wellness House in 2014 when her late mother visited for programs while fighting gallbladder cancer. She says, “As a new mom myself at the time, it was hard for me to navigate life after losing my mom. I later learned that Wellness House doesn’t just support the patient, they support the entire family. I wanted to make sure every person fighting alongside their loved one, realized that they too can find help and support.”

Murray adds, “I am so very humbled and honored to be asked to Chair this year’s Ball. For me personally, it is a way

to honor my mother and everyone fighting their courageous battle. I think about other young daughters trying to navigate their loss and life without their moms, and it pushes me to work harder. I believe we must take our blessings in life and help others through struggles.”

Her co-chair Meaghan Daly adds, “This year, guests can expect to truly feel the impact of the Wellness House in the room - to feel a connection. My hope is that they leave with a sense of what Wellness House does, and why we do it.”

Murray says, “What I love most about Wellness House and this Gala is you see the direct impact that donations support. We, as the town of Hinsdale, are so blessed to have Wellness House in our backyard. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize it until they need its services. It’s amazing to be able to quantify exactly what the fundraising does; $25,000 will pay for more than 600 individual counseling sessions, $10,000 is one day of Wellness House operations, $5,000 represents 13 nutritional classes, $2500 covers eight Child & Family Group Sessions. Every dollar is so important.”

The co-chairs muse that every year guests leave the Wellness House Ball with a sense of not only what the organization does, but just how impactful the purpose and mission is for everyone. Murray says, “I will get texts from guests afterward saying they were so moved and want to get more involved - and they do. That speaks so well of our mission.”

The Geraghty is a new venue for the Ball, and the natural glamour of the place will be enhanced by the Kristina Taheri and Kehoe Designs. Radiance was chosen as the theme as an ode to the light that Wellness House is for so many. A cancer diagnosis is one of the darkest times in a patient and their family’s life, and Wellness House is often a guiding light during that difficult journey.

The famous Wellness House Wine Cellar will be making a comeback, too. Featuring something for everyone, the

HINSDALE LIVING 52
a beacon of hope for people living with cancer and those who love them

Wine Cellar offers a variety of fixed price wines available for purchase in advance, delivered directly to your table and enjoyed at the event. Those who can’t attend may make welcome donations, or purchase libations from the Wine Cellar wine which will be delivered to your home.

Murray sums up the goal of this dynamic team, “Our

greatest hope for Radiance is that we blow our goal out of the water and are able to support the community and cancer patients, survivors, friends and family at NO COST for years and years and years to come.”

Hinsdale’s Dylan Singla explores the intersection of sustainability and artificial intelligence .

A2021 internship at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium ignited a passion for sustainability in Hinsdale’s Dylan Singla. The Hinsdale Central student was a valuable member of the sustainability action team. Singla spent his time immersed in the implementation of groundbreaking sustainability initiatives in rescuing and maintaining animals’ well-being and preserving marine habitats. He and his fellow interns planted and maintained florae surrounding the aquarium. These plants were both served in the aquarium cafeteria and fed to the animals. The group also organized two beach cleanups around Chicago to preserve the environment and protect our beloved Lake Michigan.

This impressive young man did not stop with the Great Lakes. Curiosity piqued; he joined a summer excursion where he helped preserve at-risk ocean habitats in Mexico. Singla immersed himself in the local fishing culture. This helped him understand how climate change affects water temperature, pollution, fishing populations, and ocean habitats. He shadowed scientists who were collecting and analyzing data to better understand the implications of climate change on this vibrant local community. “The Sea of Cortez used to be heavily polluted,” Singla says. “The local communities started to really take care of the sea, and it went from among the worst water quality in the world to one of the best.”

Having found a true passion for sustainability over the summer of 2021, Singla joined the Sustainability Council when I returned to The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in that fall.

Enter Artificial Intelligence, which really made headlines in 2022, intriguing some and spooking others.

Singla found himself firmly in the camp of AI fans. While many were test driving how AI prompts could shortcut tedious tasks in their day-to-day life, he began exploring the role AI can play in helping accelerate sustainability efforts in a positive way. “I looked for the connection between AI and sustainability,” Singla says. This led to the launch of his Sustain AI website, podcast, and solutions toolkit.

Just like the people who pop prompts into an AI generator and never do much with the results, many people launch websites and let them languish, sitting out there on the internet with few draws and fewer visitors. Once again, that’s where Singla separates himself.

He reached out to leaders and experts in the business, sustainability, and education spaces, asking if they would be guests on his podcast. Singla was fearless, feeling there was nothing to lose and hoping his subjects would recognize his enthusiasm and be inspired to share their own. It worked. To date, 17 professionals have joined him for interviews, which are available on the website and leading podcast platforms including Apple Podcast, Spotify, Amazon Music, and Google Podcast. Among them are the director of sustainability at the University of Wisconsin, a top executive at a leading AI company, McKinsey consultants, and a United States Congresswoman. “They’re all passionate about what they do and happy to talk about it,” Singla says.

and sustainability......”

Each conversation is engaging and informative. If a listener already has an interest in sustainability or AI, they’ll learn more about these important subjects. Yet those who don’t feel especially drawn to one or the other idea will learn, in the most pleasant way, a bit more about each with each episode played.

That’s the real genius of the project, the ease with which those who think that AI and sustainability are too big, too abstract, too daunting to work into everyday life, can dip a toe into the concepts and find their own path. Listeners from Nairobi to Los Angeles are finding hope and action items through the website and podcast. From clothing swaps in Essex, England to upcycling in Australia, people are living with less impact on the planet thanks to smart, dedicated young man who attended Monroe and Hinsdale Middle School.

As Singla settles into his senior year with the podcast gaining followers and interest from all over, the world is his ethically raised, sustainable oyster.

The Adult Inter-Faith Fellowship (AIFF) began as the Retired Men’s Club UCH, in the late 1970’s or 1980’s when several men at UCH retired. It grew with the UCH men working in town and with friends of several Hinsdale Churches as well as inviting women to Holiday dates. To recognize the attendance and contributions of women, the name was changed to Adult Fellowship. In July 2023, the core of people keeping the organization running, Jim and Sue Nibeck, Shirley and Perry Steward, Virgil Oostendorf and Rich Beck, called a meeting to consider Reorganization. That decision was made, and Ron Hilt was asked to Chair that Reorganization Committee (RC), to include women and men from Churches other than UCH, and senior housing facilities, e.g. King-Bruwaert House.

Subsequently, the RC decided that Membership in AIFF should include women and men, and all faiths. So, we concluded our name should be inclusive and Adult Inter-Faith Fellowship was born. We are targeting Churches that have supported UCH: St. Isaacs Jogues, Redeemer Lutheran Church Hinsdale, Covenant Church Hinsdale, Hinsdale United Methodist Church, and Grace Episcopal Church Hinsdale. However, public individuals are welcome to attend and become Members of AIFF.

Our Special Opening date is Wednesday, October 11, 2023, 11:30am-1:30pm with local Vocalist and Song Writer, Ellie Banke in the Sanctuary of Union Church.

GUIDING LIGHT R

aised by her Ukrainian immigrant family to value hard work and humility, ADRIANNA STASIUK of Aaron Wealth Advisors has devoted her life to helping families of all backgrounds. Even as a full-time student athlete at the University of Notre Dame, she leveraged her disciplined time management skills to afford time in her schedule to provide free basic income tax return preparation services to low-income individuals and families in the South Bend community. Today, the Park Ridge native prides herself on providing the highest level of full-service wealth management services to families and individuals as Managing Director and Investment Advisor.

How should women support other women? Honestly, I think the conversations women need to start having are around compensation and pay. Discussing money has always carried a stigma for women, which is only working against us.

What are you most proud of doing? The matriarch of a family client I’ve worked with for nearly a decade told me she feels so confident in the care of my guidance and financial advisory that she no longer feels the need to anxiously check her investment accounts every five minutes. That level of impact on a client’s well-being is what I strive to achieve with every client and family I work with.

Who is your role model and why? Without question, my role model and mentor is my colleague and fellow investment advisor at Aaron Wealth—Jenn Barry. Jenn’s track record and work history on Wall Street speaks for itself, but her true power and strength lie in her genuine care and interest in helping others. I’ve been on the receiving end of that support line for the past three years of working together, and I’m forever grateful for her.

WALL STREET SAVVY D

etroit area native JENN BARRY brings nearly three decades of experience in financial services to her position as Managing Director, Investment Advisor at Aaron Wealth Advisors—including an accomplished career on Wall Street. This 1994 University of Michigan graduate and married mother of three achieved one of the highest distinctions in the profession in 2000 when she earned her CFA® certification. She is now a candidate for CFP® certification and also recently completed the Building the Behavioral Advisor™ program.

How should women support other women? Throughout my career, I have focused on building strong relationships with other women and finding ways to lift them up. I believe life is a journey, not a competition.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? The best managers understand and empathize with their team members and give them the tools to succeed.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? I grew up in the back of my family’s restaurants and learned from a very early age you must work hard for what you want. I also learned I didn’t want to work in a restaurant after college graduation, which motivated me to work hard and find a job in business.

What was a pivotal moment in your career? Working on Wall Street is tough on your health. Four years ago, a doctor told me I needed to make changes, or I might not see my kids grow up. This was the critical wakeup call I needed to realize what’s most important in life. My health and wellness journey catalyzed my desire to evolve in my career and I’ve never been happier.

THE POWER OF POSITIVITY

For over 30 years, ALLISON ROSATI has appeared on television screens across the Chicago area, keeping viewers up to speed with the latest and breaking news. The NBC Chicago anchor has been honored with awards for her stories, series, and specials that impact our communities. Her bookshelf holds some serious accolades including six Emmys, a Gracie, and a Dante Award.

What does the idea of power mean to you? Power comes with great responsibility and requires integrity and humility. Power is what allows you to use your energy, personal connections, and resources to inspire and create. I believe our superpower is kindness. A great example is the Oak Brook Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society Auxiliary. Through events like Mistletoe Medley, these amazing women create community and have shown me and others the true meaning of sisterhood and service.

Who is your role model and why? In high school, I had the good fortune to hear Diane Sawyer speak. She encouraged the young women in the audience to “dream big.” Growing up in a small town of 2,500 people, the idea of being a news anchor and telling stories from all over the world seemed beyond my reach, but her message inspired me to never put limits on myself. She has been a role model in her professionalism and unapologetic femininity; something I’ve always strived to emulate.

What are you most proud of doing? I am most proud of being a working mom of four extraordinary children. Even after working in television for 38 years, they are my greatest productions. In my work, I am most fulfilled when I can do stories that make a difference. Our “Wednesday Child” series helped hundreds of foster children find their forever families. Currently, I am working on a weekly program called, “Happy to Report,” which gives viewers a chance to see the good happening in our communities.

LEGAL LEADER

ALLYSON RUSSO founded Russo Law Offices to provide effective, personable, and professional representation with a personalized touch. With her 20 years of experience as a practicing attorney, she specializes in simple and comprehensive estate planning, estate administration, probate, and small-business formation and maintenance, premarital agreements, guardianship matters, wills, and trust administration. Her firm has served individuals and families for almost 10 years in the Western Suburbs, making her a legal leader paving the way for others.

What does the idea of power mean to you? To me, the idea of power is having the confidence to live and work pursuant to a high standard of ethics, excellence, and compassion.

What are you most proud of doing? I am most proud of choosing to live my life with gratitude, positivity, and optimism.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? Starting my own law firm in 2014. I wasn’t sure how much business I would have at first, but I kept my overhead low and allowed Russo Law Offices to grow naturally. I received referrals through my hard earnest work, professionalism, and legal knowledge, and I am so proud of how far the firm has come and where we are today.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? During my first year as a lawyer, I learned how to work hard, treat everyone in the office and my clients with respect, and tackle any task, big or small, in any and all projects. To this day, I’ve carried that with me, bringing my clients the highest level of legal representation to ensure they are seen and heard.

INJECTING CONFIDENCE

Since 2013, AMIE MARTIN has been injecting confidence at Images Med Spa, where she continuously expands her knowledge and skills for aesthetics. So much so that in 2016, she founded Aesthetic Mentor to train aesthetic providers with ground-up training, mentoring, and shadowing. Her love for aesthetics has fueled her expertise, empowering individuals to feel confident by embracing inner and outer beauty.

What type of impact do you have on your clients’ lives? We all have concerns about changes we see in the mirror as we age, but I have the opportunity to help women and men feel confident in their skin. There are different motivations for every person who walks through the door and sits in my chair. My goal is for them to walk out feeling heard, seen, and a little lighter and fresher from the interaction and treatments I’m able to provide.

What is your best networking advice? Networking is about creating authentic connections with individuals or businesses that share your values. Seek out people who love what they do and focus on more than just making money. Networking is a great opportunity to align with individuals I can learn from, but also those that I can be of support to when they are in need.

What philanthropic organizations do you enjoy promoting? Organ donation awareness is of special interest to me. My youngest daughter received a life-saving heart transplant and we have been given the privilege of having more time with her. We met our donor family, and it has been wonderful to know organ donation was and still is a gift for them as well.

How should women support other women? We should celebrate each other’s successes, share knowledge and experience, encourage confidence, and promote collaboration.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? The transition from being a registered nurse (RN) to an advanced practice nurse (NP) requires rigorous education and training. I had to find ways to balance work, clinical rotations, and being a mom.

TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE

CARA HARTMAN, DC, DABCI, DACBN, IFMCP, is on a mission to fill what’s missing in medicine. She graduated magna cum laude from the National University of Health Sciences and brings more than 15 years of experience to the Hinsdale community. At Therapeutic Health her state-of-the-art wellness center, she succeeds in addressing the physical, physiological, and emotional components of health down to the cellular level. This Institute for Functional Medicine board-certified doctor has a reputation and pedigree that cannot be surpassed.

What are you most proud of doing? I am most proud of building a reputable wellness facility that is advancing the transformation of health care for patients. Opening my practice has been my biggest, yet most purposeful investment. My proudest moment was when a new patient told me she learned more in the hour we met than in the 23 years she had been seeking reputable, alternative care. That compliment meant the world.

What are the most important characteristics of an effective leader? An effective leader has patience and understanding, the willingness to go the extra mile, and the ability to see things from someone else’s perspective. I think it’s also important to stay humble and be happy. A smile can go a long way.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? The most meaningful lesson in my first job was to show up and work your way up. FROM ITALY WITH LOVE C

ARMELA ST. JOHN spent most of her childhood in Altamura, Italy, before she and her family moved to the United States to live the American dream. Having the fondest memories centered around the dinner table, she and her family continued to embrace the Italian way, speaking fluently in Italian while making homemade Italian dishes. Now she shares her roots, giving Hinsdale a taste of Italy by paying homage to her hometown with Altamura.

What does the idea of power mean to you? I believe power comes from within and is brought out through hard work and sacrifice. My mother and father left their home country at a very young age to make a better life in the land of opportunity. They inspired me by teaching me we all have the power to build the life we dream of. Because of what they did, I know I am living the dream they came to this country for.

How can this generation of leaders support the next generation of leaders? I believe leadership is about fellowship. One of the most pleasurable experiences is working with the high school students I hire. I have enjoyed training, mentoring, and empowering them whether it’s been teaching them how to make a pizza or making sure they make eye contact with our customers. I feel rewarded by seeing these kids change as they go from learning to do things right to making decisions about what are the right things to do. My hope is that the experience instills confidence, engages accountability, and encourages them to want to pass it along to others.

Her team of experts is credited with superior customer service, combining experience with the latest technology, all while ensuring to provide care and community along the way.

What does the idea of power mean to you? Power means exuding leadership with charisma and having the influence to use that for the greater good of humanity. Having power, when used effectively, empowers others to do the same. A Power Woman knows what she wants and goes for it no matter the length of time it takes to get there—all while having fun and enjoying the ride!

How should women support other women? Women should support women in the same way they support anyone else: with a keen eye, lack of judgment, and enthusiasm.

What are you most proud of doing? I’m most proud of the team I’ve built. They are an exceptional group who have continued to cultivate joy, pride, and empathy in their everyday interactions with our patients. Those are amazing skills to be had.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? I think the most important characteristic of a leader is to be a servant leader; one who leads by example and sets the stage of expectation by doing and not only by simply telling.

How can this generation of leaders support the next generation of leaders? We, as leaders, can help the next generation by reminding them that life and success are not meant to be easy. Anything in life worth doing takes time, perseverance, and determination. If any of these are missing, it’s a much longer road to success than is necessary.

FAMILY LEGACY W

ith drama studies at the prestigious Stella Adler Studio and a B.F.A. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, New York City-native CHELSEA HOLTZMAN LAWRENCE ’s career path naturally started in Hollywood. However, as a third generation member of the Holtzman family at CD Peacock, her destiny was to ultimately join the family business. Holtzman Lawrence, a successful actress and filmmaker, recently relocated to Chicago to lead the marketing department at CD Peacock, Chicago’s first jewelry business and premier providers of some of the world’s most luxurious watch and jewelry brands.

What are you most proud of doing? My greatest accomplishments, by far, are my children. Motherhood for me is the most rewarding and challenging job, and I know it has made me a more effective leader and collaborator as we grow the legacy of CD Peacock. We are a family run business that remains committed to connecting with each of our clients as they celebrate their life milestones. My connection to my children has reinforced the understanding that we are creating memories with our CD Peacock clients.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job?

My earlier years were spent on film sets and in production, and I always loved being in that collaborative environment where every member of the team had an integral role. Leadership is important, but you’re only able to come together and build something spectacular when every voice is valued and heard and that’s carried over into my work at CD Peacock.

What was a pivotal moment in your career? 2023 is our first year as the Official Jewelry and Watch Partner of the Chicago Cubs, and that has been an incredible milestone both personally and for CD Peacock. We’ve bridged two historic institutions with deep ties to the foundation of the city.

MEDICAL MASTERS

At the helm of the only female-founded, womenowned, direct primary-care practice in the Western Suburbs are DR. CYNTHIA LAGONE and DR. ANNE FUREY SCHULTZ. These medical masters are the co-founders of Authentic Internal Medicine, and they guide patients through their concierge medical care.

What are you most proud of doing? We are most proud of building a medical practice that restores the relationship between physician and patient. We do this by limiting the number of patients in our practice. With easy access and longer visits, we get to know our patients, which matters to us, and to our patients’ health. We also bring our longstanding ties to the most renowned specialists at Northwestern Medicine to deliver personalized, comprehensive, and coordinated care. Additionally, we collaborate with local and national teaching kitchens to help prevent and manage diseases with lifestyle interventions. We are proud to be opening our healthy teaching kitchen in our office on October 5.

How should women support other women? We were only able to open our concierge medical practice with the steadfast support and guidance of a handful of strong female colleagues who paved the way before us. Their openness and willingness to share resources and connections were invaluable. These women have been outstanding problem solvers, mentors, sounding boards, and even our cheering section! With a shared mission, vision, and values we approach one another’s ideas with humble curiosity instead of judgment. By shifting our focus back to providing exceptional care to a smaller number of patients, we have found renewed meaning and purpose in our work and gratitude for our working relationships.

THE INFLUENCERS

At the Eleven Twenty Seven Group at Morgan Stanley, Financial Advisors, STACEY BARRINS, CFP® and DANELLE PARKER , CFP® see their clients as more than a portfolio of assets—they are people with complex lives who would like a financial advisor to provide thorough, unbiased, and carefully considered guidance on a range of topics. Barrins and Parker have a shared mission to provide their clients with the guidance and knowledge necessary to help them make important life decisions.

What does the idea of power mean to you? Power, to us, is the ability to enact change to influence a more favorable outcome. We encourage positive change by providing clients with the right tools and proper guidance instead of simply making decisions for them.

How should women support other women? Parker: Through mentorship and sharing knowledge, skills, and experiences to help other women navigate their careers, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals.

Barrins: It is important to be an advocate for other women. I encourage public praise—recognizing someone for an achievement in the presence of others—as it has a multiplying effect.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? Barrins: Building a business as a female in a traditionally male dominated industry had its challenges. I work hard to stay true to myself. I am never afraid to show my feminine side but I also do not use it as an excuse or a crutch. It is important to me that clients and colleagues view me as an advisor without the female qualifier attached. Parker: I am grateful to work alongside an amazing group of women. We lean on and learn from each other and provide the support and encouragement that is needed to balance work and family life.

MARKET MAVEN

Real estate maven, DAWN MCKENNA, keeps adding notches to her designer belt. As ranked by The Wall Street Journal Real Trends, McKenna leads the No. 1 ranked team in Illinois and No. 4 ranked team in the nation among all brokerages. Since expanding to Naples, Florida, six years ago, the Dawn McKenna Group (DMG) of Coldwell Banker is No. 1 there, and Inman named DMG the No. 1 luxury team in the United States.

What does the idea of power mean to you? Power is all about earned confidence. Without confidence, you will never truly succeed in anything. But it can’t be false confidence or dreaming. The only valuable confidence—the kind that can’t be shaken—is earned from hard work, persistence, and passion. With confidence, you have unlimited power to achieve your goals.

How should women support other women? Women must first be examples to young girls. Yes, when you meet another woman in a professional setting you should help, inspire, and support. But your ability to have a significant effect on a grown woman is more limited. A strong, successful woman who inspires and leads young girls can alter the course of a girl’s life and help create a new generation of great women.

What are you most proud of doing? I am most proud of my marriage and my children. No matter how successful DMG or I may be, nothing brings me greater joy and fulfillment than my family. After that, I am most proud of my teammates at DMG. They have all learned and grown so much; and proved there is a more effective and more stylish way to be a real estate agent.

EYE FOR DESIGN

DIANA WAGENBACH, principal of Studio W Interiors, began her namesake design firm in 2020. Specializing in full-service residential design, she works on new construction, renovations, and furnishing projects across the United States. She works collaboratively with her clients and trades from concept to completion to create a beautifully designed home that aims to transcend trends.

What are you most proud of doing? I’m most proud of being able to make spaces into homes for my clients so they can raise their families and enjoy the feeling of their homes. Designing spaces that are beautiful and functional is what brings me the most joy.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? I’d say growing! It feels safer to stay small and have more control, but I think the best approach long-term is to ask for help and work with amazing people who can play to their strengths so that I can keep moving forward.

How can this generation of leaders support the next generation of leaders? Sharing information and best practices is a great start. While innovation is amazing, there are so many tried and true ways that have already been established. Sharing that information makes it easier and better for the next generation to improve and iterate on those processes instead of starting from scratch.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? To work hard and be a problem solver. There is no problem that is too big and can’t be fixed, but it takes resilience and thoughtfulness to find that solution. Also, I have learned the value of communication. I think the best business practice I’ve adopted is to set clear expectations and work hard to deliver.

NATURAL HEALER

JEN DEL GIUDICE is the founder of Luxxe Honor, a natural product company paired with wellness services located in La Grange. Since 2014, she’s been servicing clients in their self-care using nontoxic products made with safe and authentic ingredients. A registered nurse, aromatherapist, and oncology-certified aesthetician, this healer helps others reach higher, happier vibrations for improved overall wellness.

How should women support other women? Women should support other women by deeply listening to what their soul is speaking. Women are put in our path for a reason; to learn from each other and exchange feelings, ideas, and solutions.

What are you most proud of doing? I am most proud of being a mother of three daughters and making people feel better when they visit Luxxe Honor. I am on a crusade to educate people on toxins in skin care products and to teach people the tools to decompress and go within to create a state of peace for the mind and spirit.

What was the turning point in your career? The turning point of my career was when I awakened to the ability to live my life in flow. I have learned how to go within through meditation which has strengthened my power to live a life of happiness and positivity.

How can this generation of leaders support the next generation of leaders? I believe that I can support the next generation of leaders by encouraging them to take care of themselves first. Self-care allows one to have the energy and mindset to work with balance, freedom, and joy. We must look at self-care as a lifestyle instead of a luxury. We would all be more peaceful and have more fun!

TURNING HOUSES INTO HOMES

With a nearly 20-year tenure of selling dreams to homebuyers, JENNIFER NEWSOM of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago (BHHS Chicago) turns houses into homes in the Western Suburbs and Chicago area. From first-time buyers relocating from the city to empty nesters and retirees looking to downsize, she knows the fabric of these communities like the back of her hand.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? Working through the crash of 2008 was my most significant barrier. Every transaction seemed to be a short sale or foreclosure. I decided to reassess to see if real estate was the right career for me. It was then I truly realized how much I was meant to do it. My clients benefit from me having that added layer of expertise in navigating the real estate market’s ups and downs.

Who is your role model and why? My parents and my husband are my biggest role models. My dad has a work ethic and strength like no other; my mom is the most caring and patient person on earth, and my husband always makes me want to be a better person. He is so fun to be around, and I love his enthusiasm for the things he is passionate about.

What was a pivotal moment in your career? In 2019, I joined an accountability group started by Joe Stacy, my managing broker at BHHS Chicago, and his coaching helped me take my business to the next level. FAMILY VALUES

DR. JOYCE ASHAMALLA values family, both in her home and at the office. Gracefully balancing both her family and her career, Dr. Ashamalla has provided care and services to furry friends for more than 16 years as the managing partner of Hinsdale Animal Hospital.

What does the idea of power mean to you? The idea of power insinuates leading by example. Behave in the manner you would like to see in others.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? A barrier in my personal journey was learning to manage my work life as well as my home life. Having three children, including those with special needs, I wanted to be fully present and 100 percent in for both. The key to navigating has been to keep the main objectives at hand—ensuring my family feels loved, supported, and cared for, but also being an example of hard work has aided in that balance. At work, communication is everything with both the team and clients. That dichotomy has helped keep perspective. Perseverance is just that—keep going.

What are you most proud of doing? I certainly take pride in my career and family. Practicing the best medicine while operating an animal hospital including the administrative aspect and managing the team with excellent client service—it’s quite important to be well-rounded. By this I mean the importance of families. I love my work family and I’ve also been blessed with a wonderful husband and three fantastic children which I find an enormous sense of pride and gratitude in.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? To be an effective leader you must be able to actively listen.

Additionally, she has experience building custom homes and consulting with clients on complete renovations, new construction, and even multi-unit developments.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? The most significant barrier in my career has been balancing work and family. It seems to always be a challenge, especially in this business that doesn’t have a typical work week. However, with the support of my husband and partner, Will, we’ve been able to grow our business while still being very involved with our three kids and all of their activities.

Who is your role model and why? My mother is my role model. For 30 years, she juggled work and family and did it all with grace and without ever losing her poise or patience.

What was the turning point in your career? It was when I decided to expand my team and join Compass. I operate best when surrounded by the brightest, most loyal, hardworking, high-energy people. I feel so honored and blessed to be working alongside this talented group of successful teammates.

CHAMPIONS OF CARE

The partnership between University of Chicago Medicine and AdventHealth has seamlessly united two health care powerhouses into one unparalleled medical giant, making Hinsdale and the Western Suburbs the center of medical excellence. That’s in due partially because of the involvement of DR. SANDRA VALAITIS and KAREN FIASCONE.

What are you most proud of doing? Dr. Valaitis: I am proud to be a skilled surgeon earning a reputation as a “Top Doctor.” With the help of my team, I built a urogynecology program of excellence at UChicago Medicine providing office-based and minimally invasive surgical treatments for pelvic floor disorders.

Additionally, I am very proud to be appointed Chief Physician for the

AdventHealth Partnership at UChicago Medicine to help with clinical integration and program development for the joint venture. And, I’ve done it all while wearing heels, raising two fantastic children, and being a supportive wife to an outstanding husband!

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? Fiascone: Empathy. Effective leaders listen more than they speak and try to put themselves in the shoes of the people they are working with. Making human connections and seeing others as individuals, increases the chances to work well together.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? Dr. Valaitis: Early on in your career, don’t say “no” very often. The more experiences and opportunities you get, the more you will learn and grow.

Who is your role model and why? Fiascone: My mom, Barbara Jones. A woman ahead of her time, she took her incredible skills and focused them on community service, making Hinsdale an even better place to live. Additionally, as an American Society of Interior Design Peer Group Leader, I play an impactful role in communicating and sharing best practices, resources, and ideas to grow our businesses and meet our individual goals as professional interior designers.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? A successful leader possesses exceptional communication skills, is an active listener, and inspires individuals to attain their fullest potential.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? How to collaborate and be a team player. Working with builders, architects, and contractors requires interior designers to have the ability to openly communicate and be willing to compromise when necessary. Due to the complexity and multiple moving parts of a project, a designer must be flexible throughout the design process.

How should women support other women? By recognizing and supporting their unique skills and strengths and showing mutual respect for other women as individuals and professionals. Instead of competing with one another, we should focus on lifting each other up and celebrating each other’s success.

SOARING TO THE TOP

KATHERINE KARVELAS, a broker with @properties

Christie’s International Real Estate, is ranked among the top 1 percent of brokers throughout the Chicago area and within the top 1.5 percent nationwide. She is a passionate, high-impact leader with a trail of accolades and record-breaking sales. Karvelas serves as a sitting member of the University of Chicago Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Board, advises startups, and supports local nonprofits.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? The greatest risk that proved to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made was transitioning into real estate. While I was no stranger to business and leadership, leaving the education sector and the security it provided was terrifying, yet a risk I was ready to take. Never resting on my laurels, I committed to learning from my previous experiences both as a professional and serial entrepreneur and never looked back.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? To lead effectively, a leader must trust themselves and always maintain a positive outlook. We don’t win or lose; we win or learn. They must be a negotiator, think creatively and collaboratively, be a lifelong learner, and commit to their own success and development and to the success of others.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? Trust yourself first. Respect your superiors and learn from them, but never assume they always know better. For some, it takes time to come into your own and trust yourself, your instincts, and the knowledge and intellect you never knew you had until a defining moment or turning point. Take the time to listen and reflect. Don’t rush. Trust yourself.

Women can promote a positive and inclusive environment and celebrate each other’s achievements. Additionally, we can support each other by promoting and sharing each other’s work and creating a collaborative environment where everyone’s voices are heard and valued.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? The most important characteristic of an effective leader is the ability to communicate effectively. They clearly convey their vision, goals, and expectations so everyone is on the same page. Leaders who are also able to mentor, inspire, motivate, a nd listen are the best leaders. Leadership means setting an example. If you set a good example, you do not need to set rules.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? One of the lessons I learned early in my career is the importance of teamwork. In running a successful business, you have to work together to achieve success. My success lies directly in the people that surround and support me. I would not be in my position today without my team. It really does take a village!

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS

KRIS BERGER has dominated DuPage County real estate for 25 years. Being a Hinsdale native, she is the go-to expert for the area exceeding expectations. With over $500 million in sales, not only is she with Compass, the number one real estate company in the nation, but she is consistently ranked in the top five in DuPage County, the Hinsdale area, and the top 10 in the state. Paving the way with her top-ranking agents, the Kris Berger Group is breaking ground.

What does the idea of power mean to you? Power means having the ability to help others and change their lives in the world around them. When I am able to fulfill someone’s real estate needs that is very powerful for me and makes me feel really good because I’ve made someone else happy!

How should women support other women? I am all about collaborating without ego and building up women in all ways!

What was the turning point in your career? I had all kinds of side jobs after having kids. I did interior design, landscape design, home staging, and remodeling homes. Once I decided to focus solely on selling real estate my business catapulted. Now I use all those skills with my real estate clients, so we all benefit.

How can this generation of leaders support the next generation? Today’s leaders can learn from younger leaders by embracing open-mindedness and a willingness to adapt. Younger leaders often bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a deep understanding of emerging trends and technologies. To learn from them, established leaders can create mentorship programs, reverse mentorship relationships, or cross-generational collaboration initiatives. It’s so important to blend these two for the future.

She’s sewn together a team of expert stylists who value forming relationships with their shoppers, so customers leave not only looking their best but feeling their best, too.

What does the idea of power mean to you? Someone once said to me that passion is power. I love fashion and I love dressing women; making them feel great about themselves. It boosts their self-confidence and helps them express their personality through fashion. My team feels the same way, and through this collaboration of passion, we are powerful. Following my passion has also allowed me to be more powerful in the community. Not just to our customers but supporting those in need as well.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? My first job taught me to pay attention to detail. Presentation is an important aspect of my career. From the hand stitching on a beautifully tailored jacket from Italy to the gauge of a fine cashmere sweater, it all matters. Our customers expect quality and I provide that to them with the detail.

How can this generation of leaders support the next generation of leaders? I believe being accessible, open to questions, and leading by example are the besttaught lessons for the next generation. THE DOMINO EFFECT

LARYSA DOMINO, team lead and a real estate broker with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, knows numbers. Recognized as a longstanding Top Hinsdale Team, Domino’s clients confidently attribute her results to her background in corporate finance and her roll up her sleeves attitude. The Northwestern University alum, with a B.A. in economics, CPA, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, enjoys helping clients make sound investments in the place they call home.

What is your business style? Gratitude and grit. My clients know that I am fully committed to their goals and will work tirelessly to achieve them.

How do you impact your clients? I believe my finance background and commitment to an analytical, data-driven business style has created incredible results for my clients. I guide my clients in an overall advisory capacity when making their purchase or sale decisions. I want them to think with a macro lens and not just about the single transaction. This ongoing client partnership continues well past the transaction closing.

What shifts are you seeing in the real estate market? Our local real estate market is still extremely strong. While higher mortgage interest rates have softened buyer demand, housing inventory remains at historic lows. This dynamic presents sellers an incredible opportunity to cash out at current high market values. Buyers are seeing less competition and higher negotiability, with the potential to refinance in the future.

Who is your role model and why? My grandmother. She instilled a hard work ethic, grit, and the notion that you can reinvent your life. Despite hardships in her early life, she re-created herself with strength and grace here in the Chicago area after immigrating from Ukraine. She has been a definite driver in my success story.

IS QUEEN

LAURA MCADAM, MSOD, CPA CIA, is the business consultant for Beyond Shades, a Hunter Douglas Gallery and Showroom. With more than 20 years of experience, she’s helped strategize and align the success of Beyond Shades and its owner Rachel Gregersen, by using a collaborative approach to reach new heights.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? Walking the talk. It’s very simple. Say what you mean and do what you say. Stakeholders are paying more attention to a leader’s actions and how those actions affect them directly. An effective leader wants the team rowing in the same direction while being aligned with other stakeholders. Nothing undermines that more than a leader who isn’t walking the talk.

How should women support other women? Women can support other women by meeting each other where we are, focusing on the here and now, and addressing the immediate concern. This is what I do for Beyond Shades and how I support Rachel. As a successful small business owner, she doesn’t ignore what’s in front of her; but also, being one person can make it difficult for her—or anyone— to pivot in the moment. If I can jump in and support Rachel in the moment, I will. Beyond Shades is fluid and flexible, and Rachel is supported by many successful women like me who meet her where she is and move forward from there.

What are you most proud of doing? Raising my family. I have an amazing husband and two adult children who I am extremely proud of.

Dr. Shelton is a member of the Clarendon Hills Infant Welfare Society and is a co-organizer of a local fundraising walk for Postpartum Support International aimed at offering assistance to women with perinatal mood disorders.

What does the idea of power mean to you? As a female chiropractor and small business owner, the idea of power means having the ability to positively influence the health and well-being of my patients and the community. It’s about inspiring families to take control of their health and make informed decisions that feel congruent to them, which ultimately cultivates a profound sense of empowerment for them.

Who is your role model and why? My role models are my parents. My dad instilled the value of education and hard work from a young age. My mom’s dedication to our family and selflessness is inspiring. Together, they have taught me the importance of communication and teamwork—something that is incredibly important when you run a business with your spouse.

What was a pivotal moment in your career? Becoming a mom was undoubtedly a pivotal point in my career. It deepened my level of understanding and empathy for new families. Named one of Chicago’s top 30 interior designers, she’s sought out by both builders and homeowners alike. Mixing her signature flair of organic and glamorous elements, she makes design dreams come to life.

What are you most proud of doing and what’s the greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? The greatest risk has been to venture out on my own. It is also one of the things I am most proud of. I think as a woman, sometimes it’s easy to fall into the trap of doing what everyone else thinks you should do, or better yet, what society thinks you should do. It took me a while to understand that in order to be truly happy, I had to do what mattered to me. Realizing that has made it much easier to love my job and have passion for my work.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? To empower others to be confident and strong in their decisions. To let others know that even if mistakes happen, it’s okay as long as you learn and grow from it. I always tell my employees it’s my job to train them to take over my job, therefore I want them to grow alongside me.

ON HER MARK F

ormer college tennis player and corporate retail professional LISA KAHLEY, was always in search of a one-stop-shop to find stylish, yet functional activewear. After her search to no avail, she decided to put her skin in the game and set the competition straight opening Game Set, LLC—a studio and e-commerce store—in 2018. She curates women’s activewear for everything from golf and racquet sports to studio workouts to athleisure.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? The greatest risk was taking the leap to start Game Set. While there were many aspects of retail that I understood from my corporate retail career, there were many I had never been exposed to. Taking the risk of starting something that involves a completely new set of skills was scary, but it has also been one of the most rewarding aspects of my professional journey.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? In order to be successful in business, you have to deliver exceptional customer service. I always think about how the decisions I make are providing value to Game Set clients.

What was a pivotal moment in your career? Definitely when the pandemic hit. Most of my sales were done in person, but when the world shut down, we needed to move quickly to focus on online business. We not only enhanced the website, but developed new sales channels, including a try-before-you-buy service, local porch delivery, and partnering with stylists that supported this new model. Despite the challenges, Game Set was able to succeed and even grow during that time.

TEQUILA TITAN

LIZZY LOPEZ is the CEO and founder of Tequila 1349. A third-generation agave farmer, she crafted her own additive-free tequila under her father’s mentorship and partnered with a third-generation master distiller. Now bringing all three expressions to market—recently debuting reposado—she plans on expanding into a third state this year making this Power Woman a titan in the spirit industry.

How should women support other women? Let’s start by lifting each other up and leaving aside any desire to compete. One woman has power but together, we build teams that can win at anything. I have an amazing group of supportive women who have been really important in my journey. Learning from each has helped me grow both personally and professionally.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? A great leader needs to be both brave and attentive while finding the right balance between them. Using smart strategies and being able to adjust is key to staying ahead while being open to changing goals. Also, I make an effort to learn about everyone’s role in the company. This helps create a sense of responsibility and understanding, making it easier to see where things can be improved or enhanced.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? Launching this company carried significant risk. I made the leap from a stable job to venturing into entrepreneurship, navigating uncharted waters, and learning as I progressed. Embracing risks has played a vital role in my growth enabling me to gain insights from missteps and prevent their recurrence. The sense of accomplishment is truly rewarding when I’m able to persevere, regardless of the challenges that arise.

RAISING THE BARRE M

ARIEL V. PAIN is raising the barre. Discovering barre3 Online while at home, she did the full body, balanced workouts right at her very own kitchen counter with her toddlers and newborn in tow. The former marathon runner, triathlete, and yoga instructor fell in love with how challenging and uplifting the workouts were so much so that in 2017, she opened a barre3 in Clarendon Hills—right in her own neighborhood.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? The pandemic encouraged me to think beyond our studio walls and reimagine ways our community could grow. Embracing that growth mindset has been essential to our resilience. Clients can livestream classes and bring us with them during travel thanks to our extensive on-demand library. We added two new class styles—strength and cardio—to supplement our signature classes. These changes have elevated the value of our membership.

What are you most proud of doing? I’m proud to be a rebel within the fitness industry. The intention behind our classes extends far beyond the mirror image. Our classes demonstrate and redefine the joy of movement and our instructors help people feel uplifted, encouraged to grow, energized, and empowered from within.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? Prior to opening barre3, I was a school social worker. In that role, I committed to honor the value of genuinely listening to connect with others. As the studio owner of barre3, it’s important that my team members and my clients feel seen and heard. I have compassion for the story behind each person whom I have the privilege to meet at the studio.

What does the idea of power mean to you? Power is not about money or material things but instead, about influencing those in your life in a positive and inspiring way. Real power is quiet yet effective and its impact on others is lasting and meaningful. How can this generation of leaders support the next generation of leaders? As the current generation of leaders, we can provide support and guidance to the next generation through mentorship, creating opportunities for growth and development, fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusivity, and advocating for policies that prioritize the needs of young leaders. Also, be honest with the future generation. The path to success is not easy and it takes a lot of work.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? Mindfulness. Being aware, fully present, fully engaged, and accepting, with an open mind and compassion, creates a strong, healthy, and successful personal and professional life. You simply can’t be effective without being mindful.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? My first job was at my dad’s fruit market on Randolph Street in the West Loop. With other employees, I had to fill brown paper bags with fruits and vegetables. Although I was the boss’s daughter, he said I had to start at the bottom and learn everything possible about a business before I could become a boss. And I did!

Who is your role model or mentor and why? Firstly, my dad is my role model. He emigrated to the United States from Greece and had a love and passion of being an entrepreneur coupled with a determination and strong work ethic that I admired. His secret to success was being a friend to his customers and it really taught me how relationships with people are the secret to building a successful business. Secondly, my clients continue to inspire and mentor me with their dedication to living their best life in all areas—family, career, faith, and self-care. UNLEASHING CARE D

R. SARAH BAKER has been unleashing care on furry friends for well over a decade. As owner of Lane Veterinary, she has an incredible amount of experience in her field. She enjoys internal medicine and dental workups, but most importantly, she loves getting to play such an important part in the human-animal bond.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? One of the biggest barriers has been the shift in veterinary medicine from privately owned practices to corporate operations. Many of the long-standing veterinary practices sold to corporations in recent years blocking associate veterinarians from taking ownership. This shift pushed me to take the leap into practice ownership and I wouldn’t change a thing!

What are you most proud of doing? I am most proud of my family. My husband and I have two wonderful and silly young children. We each own small businesses, so it’s fulfilling to share our start-up journeys with the kids and have them involved in the process. We’ve also got a small zoo with two dogs, two cats, the occasional foster puppy, and even a foster duck! The kids love helping find our fosters forever families.

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? I wholeheartedly believe the most important characteristic of an effective leader is empathy. When you lead with empathy you are always putting the best interest of your team, and in my situation my patients and their parents, at the forefront. At Lane, we remember to treat every pet parent with empathy when they visit us. A visit is often very stressful for pets and their family members, so we ensure everyone is met with empathy.

THE AUTHENTIC TRAILBLAZER

Caviar & Chèvre, the brainchild of founder SMRETI DIDWANIA, is Hinsdale’s first ultra-luxury re-commerce boutique. Combining her passion for ultraluxury goods with her keen understanding of market trends, she curates the most elusive bags for her discerning clientele. A licensed attorney and graduate of both Northwestern Law and Loyola University Chicago School of Law, she brings a rigorous commitment to authenticity, ensuring every bag is genuine and of the highest quality.

What are you most proud of doing? I take immense pride in curating an exclusive collection of Hermès handbags. These artful pieces represent timeless elegance. Guaranteeing their authenticity is a core business value I honor. However, what fills me with joy is our personalized customer service, allowing us to understand and fulfill our client’s unique desires.

How do you guarantee the authenticity of the bags? As a trained attorney, authenticity and credibility are the foundation of our operations at Caviar & Chèvre. We enforce a zero-tolerance policy against counterfeits. Each bag is meticulously vetted and guaranteed authentic, providing a seamless and worry-free shopping experience, instilling trust in every Caviar & Chèvre purchase.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? The cornerstone lesson from my early career as an attorney was the absolute necessity of preparation and mastery of my subject. Winning my first oral argument before the Illinois Appellate Court underscored the value of this principle. Now, in the world of luxury handbags, I apply the same rigor. My passion for handbags is also my expertise, with a deep understanding of various leathers, hardware, stitching, and stamps. This has allowed me to guarantee the authenticity of our collection and deliver unparalleled quality to our clientele.

THE TRENDSETTER S

ONJA ZECEVIC has been setting trends in Hinsdale for more than five years and recently opened her newest location of Lepa Boutique in Geneva, Illinois. With a background in business management, this trendsetter is managing her two locations, while also being a mother to her four children and a loving wife to her supportive husband.

What are you most proud of doing? Opening my dream boutique, Lepa. I had no clue where to start, let alone how to attain the brands I wanted. I knew social media would play a huge role in my success, but how was I going to start that? Most importantly, I feared losing the balance of being a mother and wife, while becoming an entrepreneur. With the incredible support of my husband and the drive instilled in me by my grandfather, I’m grateful and proud of my success.

Who is your role model and why? My dad taught me to believe in myself and that my word means everything. He also taught me to be patient in life and to understand life is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. He’s the hardest-working human I know, and I’m blessed to have learned so much from him.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? I started working when I was eight years old in our family business, which has given me the work ethic I have today. I learned that even on the days you don’t feel like showing up, you show up and never give up! Learning to make the best of every day is one of the greatest lessons one can live by.

REINVENTING REAL ESTATE

SYLVIA KOS reinvents real estate, delivering a visionary approach. She amalgamates her keen eye for design with her new construction roots as a realtor for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago Hinsdale. She finds her clients their dream homes, whether it be new construction, by flipping homes, or remodeling, and helps homeowners realize their real estate potential.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career and how have you persevered? Real estate is filled with ups and downs, and changes in the market are something we can’t control. I look beyond circumstances to see potential. Recently, I found success in working with new construction, renovating, and flipping homes. It’s important to turn over every stone to find a gem!

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? My earliest lessons came from helping my father in construction. I saw homes transform under his hard work. I learned anything is possible with a plan, apply your strengths, and don’t waver in your dedication to the end result.

What was a pivotal moment in your career?

I recently incorporated lessons from my father and brother’s construction business into my real estate work. My eye for design has helped open a new world of potential in flipping homes while reinventing the homebuying experience. It’s given a new dimension to what I offer— insights on the investment of a remodel and a blueprint for how it will change.

How should women support other women?

As a new mom, I appreciate the female community in a whole new way. Nothing is better than doing business with other women in my community and we have to celebrate and support each other’s successes by building each other up and inspiring each other to act with confidence.

STEP THREE OF THE STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS™— CHILD SUPPORT

The attorneys at Strategic Divorce strive to educate our clients on all relevant matters to ease an often-difficult process. We believe knowledge of the divorce process provides the strength and peace of mind to complete it. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™.

My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved. These steps are:

1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts.

Allocation Judgement is a legal term for the document used to specifically assign parenting time and parenting responsibilities. Once Step 2 has been completed and the Allocation Judgement has been entered as a final order by the court, we move on to the marital settlement agreement. This next stage is expressed as Steps 3, 4, and 5 in The Strategic Divorce Process. In this monthly series, we will examine Step 3 or Child Support.

Under The Strategic Divorce Process, discussions around child support only begin once the Allocation Judgment has been reached, and with good reason. While the Allocation Judgement has no effect on child support, the visitation schedule it sets forth is the driving factor in the amount of money one spouse will pay— so it must be determined first.

Child support is an obligation of both parents to support their child until the child is 18 years old or has completed high school— whichever comes second. Typically, one parent will pay the other a set amount of money each month to help with living expenses for the child.

Child support is calculated using a complicated equation that takes a variety of variables into account. While some of the variables are obvious, such as the number of overnights and each parent’s income, others, such as who pays health insurance, are less obvious, and many parents may not have thought to consider them.

In addition to child support payments, parents usually divide the cost of additional expenses proportionate to their income. These expenses can include school fees, medical costs not covered by insurance, extracurricular activities, and other costs that don’t fall

under day-to-day expenses. Often there is a 40/60 split, with the parent who has the higher income paying 60 percent, regardless of the visitation schedule.

The first step in determining the amount of child support is knowing who will be receiving it. If one parent has more than 60 percent of the overnights, the other parent will likely owe them child support—even if the parent with more visitation has a higher income. Parents who have less than 40 percent of the overnight visits will pay significantly more child support, even if the difference is only a few days.

Whoever has greater visitation is significant in other ways as well, as this parent will likely get the tax benefit from each child. This is important because the tax filing status of each parent is taken into the child support equation.

This may seem like an insignificant thing to consider, but it can have a large effect on the parent’s net income—and net income, not gross income, is what child support is based upon.

Spousal Support, also known as maintenance or alimony, can also affect the amount of child support. Although they are calculated separately, maintenance is considered income for the parent receiving it, which will reduce the income gap between each parent, affecting the child support calculation.

There are some situations that would cause child support to continue beyond the age of 18 or after high school graduation. For example, a new motion would be filed with the court asking the court to set how much each parent should pay toward college expenses. Another instance of continued support would be if the child had a disability.

While many of the decisions that factor into child support may be complicated, the actual equation leaves very little room for interpretation. Once the Allocation Judgement has been reached, child support is a pretty quick calculation in most cases. When parents work together, realizing that they both want what is best for their kids, it tends to be even easier.

A PERFECT MARRIAGE

Chef Pete DeRuvo’s does the impossible at Vinny’s Clam Bar in Tinley Park by generating genuine harmony between an East Coast Italian clam bar and an old-school Taylor Street Trattoria.

DINNER DATE

DINNER DATE

In the restaurant world, there is one inviolable commandment: Never, ever—under any godforsaken circumstance—utter the phrase “passion project.” It’s a sure-fire jinx. An instant karma killer. You might as well stroll under a giant ladder, a broken mirror cracking underfoot, while you pet a black cat.

When seasoned industry folks hear that phrase, their thoughts invariably flit to way-too-precious concepts that end in unpaid loans and underwater mortgages. Who wouldn’t be interested in playing $300, some chefs wonder, for a 15-course tasting menu celebrating vegan fare inspired by the island of Guam? Answer: the general public.

So, a few months back, when chef Pete DeRuvo announced that he was working on a new restaurant concept that he had been dreaming about for 13 years, I held my breath.

“Please, please,” I whispered to myself, “don’t let him say those two words: passion project.”

DeRuvo, a chef and managing partner at the Scott Harris Restaurant group (best known for its Mia Francesca outposts), had already picked out a name: Vinny’s Clam Bar. He hoped to honor his New York-born uncle Vincenzo. He’d picked out a site as well: a long, rectangular dining space in Tinley Park that once housed a Tin Fish seafood outpost.

DeRuvo wanted Vinny’s to showcase two quite different dialects of Italian-American cooking: bisques, bivalves and brothy seafood-based pasta sauces from the East Coast. And the kind of brawny, garlicheavy Midwest Italian fare you would find at a red-sauce joint on the South Side of Chicago.

In different hands, this could have been pure gimmickry. Only DeRevu grew up in New York and spent plenty of time cooking clams in Rhode Island, so he cut no corners when building a proper East Coast cooking station. DeRuvo burns down white oak and mesquite—along with huge stalks of

Cocktails

Chef Pete DeRuvo says he has major plans afoot for themed dinners at Vinny’s (caviar dinners, Feast of the Seven Fishes, etc.) where he’ll highlight plenty of wines. For now, the cocktails are guaranteed to float your boat.

Lemon Creek Park: This is Key West meets the Amalfi Coast. A blend of citron and vanilla vodkas infused with every citrus Italian accent you can image: limoncello, the slightly apricot amaretto, and orgeat. The results taste like a fragrant spiked lemonade.

Caption

Southside Johnny:

A cognac-based tipple splashed with solera triple orange liquor, limes, and powdered sugar. Works well before the meal and even better as the perfect pairing for Vinny’s brilliant limoncello tiramisu, the house’s best dessert.

Linguine Tutto Mare
HINSDALE LIVING 121
Grilled Pizza Bianca

rosemary and other herbs— into embers, enshrouding everything that hits his grill in a fragrant cloud of sweet smoke. He prepares grilled pizzas at Vinny’s, which are just as crispy in the center as around the edges. For a unique treat, try his white “bianca” pie made with four cheeses — sheep’s milk, fontina, a pecorino fondue, and dried mozzarella—and blanketed with various veggie scrapes and Italian greens.

Vinny’s Chicago-style offerings prove to be particularly clever when they infuse East Coast flavor into classic Midwest Italian recipes. You would expect Vinney’s veal Marsala, for instance, to be prepared the Chicago way: pounded paper thin and bathed in a sweet wine sauce. It’s the opposite here: The veal is cut as thick as Salisbury steak. Mushrooms are stewed until they taste like the undergrowth of a forest. And the dominant flavor of the veal’s rich inky sauce is pungent blast of spicy black pepper, rather than the sweet jus we’re used to.

It takes finesse to mix, match and marry these two distinctly different approaches to Italian cooking, but DeRuvo does so rather seamlessly. We frontloaded our meal with seafood. You should, too.

If you like your oysters raw, he will have a selection of different shuckers to choose from, but I would suggest you let DeRuvo fire them up, either “Rock-a-fella” (think oysters Rockefeller) or ladled with garlic and herbs. But make sure to save room for the daily crudo, especially if the kitchen’s serving raw scallops.

We used our middle pasta course—linguine tutto mare piled

high with clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, and cherry tomatoes— as a pivot. And then ordered Dominck’s meatball and Italian sausage platter, which is set on polenta and doused with a Sunday gravy slowly stewed with beef and neck bones. The dish, named after DeRuvo’s son, features some of the juiciest meatballs of the year: a combo of veal, pork and beef that is seasoned with lots of oregano and infused with ricotta. The kid doesn’t know how good he’s got it.

By the way, if Vinny’s sounds like an incredible baroque exploration of Italian food, you don’t know the half of it. There’s not a single sightline in the restaurant that hasn’t been designed to make you giggle. I’ve seen Where’s Waldo illustrations that have less going on than this place, which seems to be both celebrating and savaging a whole host of contemporary design motifs.

Rather than drape yet another “living garden” of plants and flowers from the ceiling, Vinny’s boasts an upside down “Italian garden,” which dangles plastic garlic cloves, straw-lined chianti bottles and faux sausages from the ceiling like giant mobiles. The 1970s-era wood paneling around the bar looks like it was salvaged the same basement bars my dad used to pound Old Styles in after playing his 16-inch softball tournaments.

I could go on for paragraphs. There is a giant mural of Scott Harris inspired by a famous magazine photo shoot. A giant disco ball that throws rainbows of light across the dining room come nightfall. And plenty of cute one-liners hidden throughout. A sign by the host stand reads: Director of First Impressions. And your plates will come stamped with phrases like than “Shell Yeah” and “Ship Happens.”

DeRuvo might have been wise to avoid every describing Vinny’s as his “passion project,” but one look at the ink running up his arm speaks volumes. Sitting below a tattoo celebrating his allegiance to the New York Yankees—hey, no one’s perfect—is another tattoo that reads Vinny’s.

Ample proof that, with the right talent and ideas, it is perfectly acceptable to wear your passion on your sleeve.

The private island escape of Oil Nut Bay is luring vacationers as well as second homebuyers to the British Virgin Islands .

Tucked away in the breathtaking North Sound region of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands lies Oil Nut Bay, a unique 400-acre resort that has quickly risen to the top of the list for both vacationers and second homebuyers. Known for its privacy, the idyllic resort includes luxury homes and villa rentals all with stunning views of the cerulean waters. The exclusive property’s accommodations range from cliffside one-bedroom suites to six-bedroom villas, some as high as 440 feet above sea level. Oil Nut Bay is also committed to preserving the incomparable beauty of this island paradise; 50 percent of the land at the resort remains designated as open space.

“We created Oil Nut Bay as a private resort community with world-class amenities and activities that celebrate the beauty of the BVI and the barefoot luxury lifestyle,” says developer David V. Johnson. “Each home lives in harmony with the natural landscape,

accentuating its raw beauty. We’re proud to welcome a diverse collection of guests and owners who can enjoy the great outdoors with the island’s near-perfect year-round weather.”

Johnson, also the mastermind behind Michigan’s beloved Bay Harbor waterfront development, has a knack for creating tranquil resort destinations that resonate with guests while also thoughtfully embracing the local landscape. Oil Nut Bay’s homes complement the natural topography of Virgin Gorda. Architectural marvels include the hilltop Lion Heart Estate, home to Halo, a fivebedroom villa that is a masterwork of biophilic design, and the brand-new cliffside Constellations estate, complete with its own beach access and panoramic views around every corner.

Oil Nut Bay is the site of the only internationally certified heliport in the region, making for an easy jaunt in from other islands. American Airlines offers direct flights from Miami to

Tortola; Oil Nut Bay is then just a 45-minute boat ride away from Tortola Airport, or a short flight by helicopter. The North Sound area—also home to Sir Richard Branson’s Necker and Moskito Islands—is known for boasting the very best in lowdensity development within a niche Caribbean micro market.

“This is an exceptionally unique opportunity for second-home buyers and vacationers alike. Oil Nut Bay’s location within the BVI offers quick access to surrounding islands. St. Barth’s, for example, is only 45 minutes away. Yet, while at Oil Nut Bay, you feel as if you have found something undiscovered. We are thrilled to be partnering with the Oil Nut Bay team to enhance their sales and marketing efforts and introduce our local client base to this hidden gem in the BVI. There really is no other place like it,” says Katie Moor of the Dawn McKenna Group with Coldwell Banker.

Oil Nut Bay prides itself on its fine amenities including a beach club with three pools, world-class dining options like the Nova overwater restaurant and bar, a wellness center with gym, pickleball and tennis courts, two helipads, Deep Bay Watersports Center, a 93-slip marina, and the Nut House Kids Club. All these amenities are easily accessible by electric golf cart on this car-less island; just take care not to be distracted by the sight of whales breaching on the horizon.

The resort offers abundant opportunities for eco-tourism. The Turtle Tagging Boating Adventure provides the chance to safely catch a turtle alongside an on-board researcher. After the turtle is measured, it is tagged before being released so guests can continue to follow the animal’s adventures. Landlubbers can

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

A globetrotting Hinsdale couple revamps their private quarters just in time for cozy season

Dream homes stay that way with the occasional refresh. For an executive at an international spice company who conducts business all around the world and his sophisticated wife, home is a sanctuary. They are methodically updating each space with the help of interior designer Robert Hughes, of Robert Hughes Interiors. Hughes has worked with this power couple before. He

understands what they’re looking for in each room and takes extra care to make sure that both of their preferences are reflected in the final selections.

Knowing that they are regular guests of the finest hotels in the world, the challenge was to create a bedroom that outshines them all. That way, when they return from Europe or Asia, Hinsdale is always and forever home sweet home.

TACTILE TREASURES

Layered textiles are pleasing to the eye and to the touch. “The comforter came all the way from Switzerland. It had quite a journey and was totally worth the wait,” says Hughes. The headboard is covered in linen and the custom pillows are a linen ikat backed with wool boucle. The armoire is custom built to offer additional storage and add a masculine note to the room.

DESIGN HINSDALE LIVING 130

STATELY NIGHTSTANDS

The jumping off point for everything in the room is an extraordinary pair of three-door chests that serve as nightstands on either side of the bed. Shagreen leather adds visual interest to the drawer fronts, contrasting beautifully with the rich wood. The shape is reminiscent of the steamer trunks with which travelers often boarded ships long ago.

DESIGN

ARTFUL EYE

A set of four vintage botanicals flank a door. “These were actually photographed with a camera from the 1800s, giving them a haunting beauty that’s different from much of what we see today,” says Hughes.

COLLECTED AND CURATED

Lovely objects represent the couple’s travels and add to the global feeling of the room. A crocodile-embossed leather tray holds a Buddha sculpture.

THOUGHTFUL DETAILS

A sizeable mirror on the side of the armoire bounces the light and comes in handy for dressing. The green frond adds a pop of color. Even the lamps were carefully chosen to fill in the space perfectly without calling attention to themselves, letting other elements of the room shine.

Red Devil Football Golf Dinner

It was a glorious day of golf at the beautiful Chicago Highlands Club, followed by a delicious buffet dinner for the Hinsdale Central football community. Craig Boggs, president of the Hinsdale Central Football Club, welcomed guests and introduced head coach Brian Griffin, who shared his hopes for the season and gave much credit to the entire coaching staff. Alumni were well represented, with an especially strong showing by the Class of 1978. Everyone is encouraged to come out to Hinsdale Bank Stadium at Dickenson Field for the final regularseason home game on Friday, October 13. hcfootball.com

FAMILY PRACTICE

Botti Law Firm in Oak Brook has been providing legal

services

for more than 50 years .

When you walk into Botti Law Firm’s new office at the Drake Office Plaza in Oak Brook, you are greeted as if you are a member of the family. “We’re all family here,” says John Botti. “I work with my dad, Aldo Botti, and my brother Michael, and our other partner, Jean Lasics-Wessels, has been working here for 28 years. Each member of our support staff has been here for years too,” said John.

Botti Law Firm provides dedicated and compassionate representation for its clients in the practice areas of family law, personal injury, criminal defense, and business litigation.

“This firm was started by Aldo Botti over 50 years ago and he is still practicing,” says John. “In a sense, the firm is a reflection of him. He grew up as a child of immigrants, and his determination and tenacity are in this firm’s DNA. This firm has helped a lot of people over the years. I’m proud to be carrying on that legacy,” Botti says.

John grew up in Hinsdale, attended Fenwick High School in

Oak Park, and received an undergraduate degree from Villanova University and earned his law degree from UIC John Marshall Law.

During law school, he interned at the Cook County Public Defender’s Office. John’s first job out of law school was as a criminal prosecutor in DuPage County for five years. This valuable experience gives John deep perspective that is helpful in daily life and in the practice of law. He has been with Botti Law Firm for over a decade.

“We are dedicated to helping our clients,” John says, adding, “We understand they are going through a hard time in their lives, and we all want to make it as easy as possible for them while getting the best outcome.”

This starts by welcoming them into the family. As a business by a family with deep area roots for other families, those who are seeking counsel have a home at Botti Law.

THE EYES HAVE IT

Dr. Amjad Ahmad , the top oculofacial surgeon in the Chicago region,

Dr. Amjad Ahmad and his staff may perform surgeries on their patients on the Gold Coast of Chicago, but they hold a serious affection for Hinsdale. For over a decade, women from the village have flocked downtown to freshen their look by getting their eyelids treated, Dr. Ahmad’s specialty.

Ahmad, an ophthalmologist, is one of the best—and one of the few—plastic surgeons in the area that focuses exclusively on oculofacial surgery. Oculofacial plastic surgery is the cosmetic treatment or reconstruction of the eyelids. While some general plastic surgeons perform the procedure, Ahmad has made it his area of expertise.

“These are procedures that are done to enhance someone’s own natural beauty by making people look more refreshed, not changing their look,” Ahmad says. “We do it in a very personalized fashion, so everyone gets a different treatment plan depending on what their goals are and what their anatomy is.”

Ahmad says when he first consults with potential patients, he asks what’s bringing them in and what’s bothering them about their look. Usually, it’s that their eyelids—they’ve been watching themselves on Zoom calls—make them look tired. People are recognizing how fatigued their eyelids look as they’re aging.

“I think that the most important thing is that people understand when they come to see us, they’re not getting the same surgery that the person who lives next door to them is getting,” he says. “We

spend time personalizing. People keep coming back because they look refreshed, and their identity is unchanged.”

It just takes one appointment, Ahmad says, and people get it. He’s been doing the same procedures over and over for 20 years. He’s also got the stamp of approval from other doctors and their spouses, who understand that if they want to look their best they have to go to the best.

Ahmad and his medical team conduct consults and surgeries from offices in Lakeview and in Lisle. He says he’s deliberate about the atmosphere he has created, one that reflects his focus on bringing his whole team together to create a welcoming and pressure-free atmosphere for patients.

“We have an environment of kindness, and we’re not selling anything. We’re just visiting with people, and we try to give them options to improve their aesthetics around the eye area,” he says. “I think that’s one of the things people really like.”

Perhaps that’s also one of the reasons Ahmad and his team have developed such a strong following in Hinsdale. Primarily through word of mouth and patients being highly satisfied with the team’s work, people from the village continue to make the trek down the Eisenhower Expressway to see him.

For a consultation with Dr. Ahmad, call 630-505-8888 or 773-7998883, chicagoeyelids.com.
