he luxury real estate buying boom that began in 2020 and escalated in 2021 is still going strong as we move into the second quarter of 2022. Inappeasable demand exhausted inventory across the U.S. and put upward pressure on prices. Driving the real estate surge was a combination of factors including consumer values caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, historic growth in wealth due to cryptocurrency gains, rising house prices and increased savings and finally, the idea of comfort in your own home became paramount. As consumers searched for places to invest their wealth and re-envisioned ‘home’ as multi-functional spaces for work, play and sanctuary, they sought out bigger and better living environments. Many luxury real estate professionals will look back on 2021 and be able to say that it was their best year yet; I know my team was one of them. The question now is: will 2022 build on this momentum, or will there be a drop in demand as some experts are predicting?

There are several unknowns that will dictate the

move for fear of less buying power due to higher interest rates and again, lack of compelling inventory. The second is the continuing migration to the suburbs. An unprecedented number of consumers packing up and moving away from the big cities due to high taxes and social unrest. Finally, a high demand for new construction. Now that consumers are spending more time at home, they want the best there is. However, it is very difficult to find new construction of luxury homes due to the high cost of materials and labor shortages. As I write this article, the market is still robust, although there are rumblings that there may be 6 more interest rate hikes this year.

The exhibition will also present over 100 photographs by Warhol from the college’s permanent collection, comprised of both black-and-white gelatin silver prints and color Polaroid prints featuring unidentified figures and celebrities alike. These photographs offer a rare and intimate glimpse into Warhol’s New York of the 1970’s and 80’s. The exhibition will encompass both the CCMA and the MAC, unfolding across roughly 10,000 squarefeet of exhibition space. Educational and interactive elements will include a historical timeline, video archive installation, interactive mural, children’s print factory area, Studio 54 experience and Central Park-inspired outdoor café, creating an immersive, multifaceted exhibition focused on the life and work of one of the most influential artists of the past century.

Kirsten Lynn Karlblom returned

to the area with her husband, Steve, in 1999 after a stint in Lake Barrington. A Loras College graduate and former third-grade teacher, Karlblom stayed home to raise her four girls until she found her passion for Pilates. A Pilates instructor since 2005, Karlblom opened her own business Pilates Body by Kirsten in 2010. The studio, currently located in downtown Crystal Lake, also offers large group classes including Hot Yoga, Heated Stretch, Aerial, and more. Outside the studio, Karlblom serves on the board of Hope’s In, a Barrington-based nonprofit and attends the Presbyterian Church of Barrington.

t’s no secret that the current housing market is extremely competitive. With housing prices at an all-time high and inventory at an all-time low, finding the best real estate agent is more important than ever. ewelry is more than just a dazzling accessory for ones’ outfits—it is also full of stories celebrating important milestones and capturing cherished family memories. So often it is symbolic, acting as a little celebration of who we are. As a specialist in Hindman’s Jewelry & Watches Department, I have the privilege to hear so many clients reminisce as they unveil their jewelry boxes and consider what they might be willing to put “under the hammer.”

I have always loved jewelry for as long as I can remember and have been fascinated by the idea of jewelry as a form of adornment. Growing up in Australia with two sisters, there was great feminine energy in our home, and jewelry and fashion were always keenly discussed topics.

I became increasingly captivated by jewelry when I moved to New York City. I first worked as an assistant to a Broadway director but quickly felt myself being lured into the jewelry industry and all things sparkly. I achieved my GG (Graduate Gemology) diploma from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), and from there, I found myself on Madison Avenue working alongside renowned diamond houses. It was a magical experience—I was absolutely in my element handling the most extraordinary gemstones.

Now I’ve landed on the North Shore of Chicago and have been living here for almost 10 years. I have found my jewelry niche working as a specialist at Hindman. The auction world is so thrilling— after all my last name is Hammer, so it is absolutely where I am meant to be. In my role as a jewelry specialist, I often get questions about why one would want to buy or sell at auction. Auctions truly give new life to jewelry, offering bidders the rare chance to snag an amazing item that they will not find anywhere else, not even at an established jeweler. In the same vein, when you sell an item at auction, the sky is truly the limit. Q: How long will my divorce take?

A: That depends on the complexity of the issues involved and how quickly the parties can reach an agreement. There are divorces that can be completed in just a few weeks, and those that take a few years. On average, the process is completed within 9-12 months after filing.

Q: Am I “legally separated” while going through divorce?

A: No. A legal separation is a different legal action that generally involves the same process as a divorce, only the parties remain legally married at the end. Many couples finalize their divorce while still living under the same roof.

PET CUSTODY Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer discusses Illinois law as it applies to pet custody in divorce.

n Illinois, courts previously viewed animals as property. Pet custody did not appear in divorce case law until 2015. In that case, the husband sought visitation with the parties’ two dogs, who had been in the wife’s possession during separation. The court viewed this as a property issue and looked to the Animal Control Act to define “owner.” Using the Act’s definition of owner, the court awarded custody to the wife without any visitation to the husband. The courts believed that awarding pet visitation served as an invitation for endless post-divorce litigation. Under this case law, if two parties separated, the party who obtained possession and control of the pet prior to the divorce was awarded pet custody.

Illinois law has since adapted to the way families view and treat their pets. One study found that more than 95 percent of pet owners described their dog as a family member. Owners form strong emotional bonds with their pets, buying presents, grooming products, and even hosting pet parties. In 2018, the Illinois legislature enacted laws that address companion animals. The term “companion animal” includes essentially any pet not considered a service animal.

The new statute, effective January 1, 2018, allows parties to enter into an agreement that addresses the ownership, responsibility, and visitation of a companion animal. Pursuant to the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act, the ownership of and responsibility for companion animals found to be marital assets will be allocated to one party or to the parties jointly. The animal will be considered a marital asset if it was acquired during the marriage and was not an inheritance or gift to one spouse. The statute does not address what happens if the animal was a gift to the children.

When devising a pet schedule, the parties must each consider the best way to transport the pet between homes, who will pay for the pets’ expenses (including food and veterinary care), who will be responsible for grooming, and what items are needed in each home to keep the pet happy and healthy.

If the parties cannot agree, then either party may ask the court for the temporary allocation of, sole or joint possession of, and responsibility for, a companion animal jointly owned by the parties. When awarding possession, responsibility, and visitation, the court will consider the pet’s well-being. Some of the factors considered include if there are children, where the children will be living, whether one spouse was more instrumental in purchasing the pet, and who was most responsible for the pet’s care during the marriage, including daily feedings, walks, and veterinary appointments.

ental work has never been an experience that many find pleasing. Part of the experience used to include impressions. These are the trays that are filled with that messy silicone type of material that hardens as it sits in your mouth for five minutes. The great news is, those impressions are gone forever.

Digital scanners are changing the world of dentistry. The dentist can prepare teeth for porcelain restorations and immediately scan them to save the information that they would usually get from the impressions. Patients no longer have to feel that unpleasant sense of gagging as the impression material hardens in their mouth.

Our office has been using the 3Shape Trios scanner for a year now and the results have been tremendous. The crowns, veneers, bridges, mouth guards, and implants have seen a sig-

nificant increase in their quality of fit and finish. The scanner takes approximately 1,500 scans in a three-dimensional mode.

The scans are then all stitched together by the software. A 3-D model can then be printed and used for any required restoration. I have been able to use it to measure clearances, preview smiles, and communicate shape and color to the laboratory technician. Our patients have been very vocal about the scanner and they approve.

This technology is not limited to just restorations. Multiple scans of the same patient can be grouped together. This grouping is of different scans over time. The software allows us to see how the patient is wearing down their teeth and how teeth have moved over time. This type of diagnosis helps the patient visualize what is happening with their mouth.

ravel expert Christina Paull was enjoying a much-needed trip to Paris this past spring with her husband, Tim, and sons Ryan and Jason when this lover of all things luxurious decided to make a little visit to the almighty Louis Vuitton store.

“Louis Vuitton is my all-time favorite,” gushes Paul, “and I needed a new strap for one of my purses anyway.”

Paull was sipping champagne and basking in the magic of the famed store when an associate presented her with an offer she simply could not refuse.

“The salesperson was telling me they had a new coat that had just come off the runway, and she wanted to know if I would be interested in her going into the vault and pulling it out for me,” Paull remembers. “Suddenly, I’m wearing a Louis Vuitton coat costing 17,000 euros that just came off the runway in Paris. How many people get to go to Paris, go to the headquarters of Louis Vuitton, and try on a coat that just came off the runway? … It was amazing.”

Paull travels in search of moments such as this; her constant wanderlust transporting her to places she once could only dream of. Luckily for her, as the executive producer of Family Travel with Colleen Kelly, Paull has found a way to make her passion for travel an actual profession “We have our fingers crossed that we will be filming in some amazing new locales later this year, from Colorado to Sri Lanka to Suriname,” says Paull, who also hosts a radio show on WLS-AM 890 that offers listeners travel tips on everything from hotels to flights to gadgets. “I didn’t even know where Suriname was until I looked it up.”

“I now know it’s north of Brazil,” she adds with a laugh. “They literally had to show me on the map where they were located because I had no idea. I still must work on all the details of that trip.”

Paull’s love for travel began when she was just a little kid growing up in Park Ridge, Illinois.

“Every year my parents always took us on vacations,” recalls Paull, whose passion for travel led her to jobs at companies such as Walt Disney World, Hyatt, and United Airlines. “My parents were always taking my brother, John, and me to destinations from the Wisconsin Dells to Hawaii.

Wherever we traveled, we always had so much fun.

I had the best childhood.”

As a college student, Paull’s journeys took an international turn.

“I remember calling my best friend, Colleen, and saying that I was going to live in Salzburg, Austria to study communications and I wanted her to come with me,” Paull remembers of her

childhood friend whom she met at 10 years old. “Luckily, she went.

We studied abroad, traveled to countries all over Europe, and had the time of our lives.”

This enchanting time now continues, as it is this “Colleen” who Paull now works with on the show Family Travel with Colleen Kelly.

“These days, if I’m not traveling, I spend my days sending emails all over the world setting up the next adventures for the show,” explains Paull. “I’m sending emails to everywhere from Jordan to Idaho to Australia. It’s mind-boggling.”

Of course, Paull’s travels were affected by the prevalence of COVID-19 starting in 2020 but she refused to let it hold her down for very long.

“We were certainly on pause, and it was great to have so much family time,” Paull recalls. “But by October of 2021, we were filming in Poland. I did get COVID in Ireland and that landed me in my hotel room for 10 days but aren’t there are worse places to get stranded?”

Paull’s on-the-go lifestyle certainly adds spice to the life of a woman who has made the Barrington area home for the past 24 years.

“There’s not a single day that’s the same for me,” states Paull, who notes the only thing she doesn’t enjoy about traveling is packing.

“There are days when I come home, and I already have a suitcase packed for the next adventure.”

It’s a life she doesn’t take for granted.

“I don’t like to say I am lucky, but I am blessed,” Paull says. “I’m out there experiencing things in the world, and I love every minute of it.”

Of course, Paull admits that there is a sweetness to coming home.

“There is nothing better than sleeping in one’s own bed,” she says with a slight chuckle. “It’s a great feeling.”

R ECIPE| F OOD & TRAVE L INGREDIENTS FOR LAVENDER ICE CREAM (MAKES 3 PINTS) • • • • •

1 cup whole milk 3 teaspoons culinary-grade dried lavender 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste 2 pints (four cups) heavy whipping cream 2, 14-oz cans sweetened condensed milk

FOR ALMOND SABLÉS

• 1 cup blanched slivered almonds, divided (half for the dough; half to top cookies) • 1 ½ sticks butter, slightly softened • ½ cup maple sugar • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons spiced rum • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted • 1 large egg yolk mixed with 1 teaspoon water

METHOD FOR LAVENDER ICE CREAM

Prepare milk: In a small pot over medium heat, warm milk to a simmer.

Remove from heat. Stir in 3 teaspoons dried culinary-grade lavender and vanilla paste. Pour into a bowl. Press a sheet of plastic wrap into the bowl to come in contact with the surface of the milk. Refrigerate for two hours, while you make the cookies.

Finish ice cream: In the bowl of a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, whip heavy whipping cream to peaks. Using a spatula and an over/under motion, fold in the sweetened condensed milk. Stir in the lavender milk. Pour mixture into three shallow two-cup containers with lids.

Press plastic wrap in contact with the surface of the cream. Cover with lids. Freeze until firm (about six hours).

FOR ALMOND SABLÉS

S

ablé is French for “sandy,” an apt description for the delicate crumbly texture of these buttery, almond-enriched cookies that originated in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, France. Also known as Sablé Breton, or French butter cookies, they are cousins to shortbread but are shaped into rounds rather than fingers. As I have been working more with natural sweeteners, these are made with maple sugar, rather than the usual cane sugar, in a recipe adapted from British chef Dione Lucas, the first female graduate of Le Cordon Bleu.

The luscious lavender ice cream is a snap to prepare without need for an ice cream maker. You’ll just need whipping cream, whole milk steeped with culinary-grade lavender, vanilla paste, and sweetened condensed milk. The lavender flowers add little pops of flavor and a beautiful scent. NOTE: You’ll want to prepare the ice cream the day before serving—it takes six hours to freeze.

Set oven rack to the center position. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grind ½ cup of the blanched almond slivers very fine. (A well-cleaned spice or coffee grinder works well for this, pulse in short bursts.) Set aside.

In the bowl of a standing mixer with the paddle attachment, whip the butter until fluffy. Add the maple sugar and pinch of salt and whip again until smooth. Add the rum and ground almonds. Beat again until incorporated. Working a scoop at a time, with mixer on low speed, beat in the flour, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.

Beat until all flour has been added and the dough is smooth.

Spread a clean work surface with plastic wrap. Scoop dough onto plastic. Gather up the corners of the plastic and squeezing through it, work and knead the dough until there are no crumbles. Place the dough on your work surface, knead just a bit more. Shape into a ball and divide in half. Spread worksurface with parchment paper. Flatten half of the dough into a rectangle on the paper, cover with plastic wrap and roll out into 1/8 inch thickness. Leaving dough rectangle on parchment, transfer to a cookie sheet and refrigerate. Repeat with remaining ball of dough.

Once dough is well chilled, use a 1½ inch round cutter to cut dough into circles. Place cookies close together on parchment-lined sheet pans. Brush with egg wash. Sprinkle remaining ½ cup of slivered almonds onto tops of cookies. Press nuts into cookies. Brush again with more egg wash. Bake in 350-degree oven for 13 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Cool cookies on wire racks.

WISCONSIN’S WONDERLAND Discovering Door County all over again.

“T

his road is worthy of a Maserati convertible,” declared my friend Santosh as I navigated my trusty Hyundai around 15 curves, weaving right and left like a kid dodging cones in the road. The thrill lasted just a few minutes, yet I could only imagine how glorious this drive would be in an open-top car under glistening autumn leaves.

That unexpected curvy road (more on this later) was just one of many highlights of a three-day summer visit to the Door County Peninsula, the distinguishable narrow thumb of Wisconsin that juts 75 miles into Lake Michigan and offers 300 miles of shoreline.

I had been to Door County many times in my youth and fondly remembered the cherry picking, fish boils, and Peninsula State Park hikes, but this journey was all about checking out newer places and visiting spots that had long been on my list.

I selected the recently opened The Dörr Hotel as our three-day

basecamp. Set in the heart of Sister Bay and opened in the spring of 2021, the four-story property has the distinction of being the area’s first newly built hotel in almost 18 years.

“We saw a need for a new contemporary hotel that reflected the area’s natural beauty and Scandinavian heritage,” says The Dörr’s principal owner Christopher Schmeltz. Chicago-based Aria Group Architects interpreted this vision and created an interior with a modern Nordic sensibility. The impressive two-story lobby, with cedar beams and natural oak floors and furnishings, serves as the hotel’s living room. Its dominant fireplace, flanked by log towers and comfortable seating, is an inviting setting for drinks and small plates in the evening and a complimentary light breakfast in the morning. Guest Experience Hosts offer touring suggestions along with restaurant and theater reservations. Accommodations are soothing—light and bright with white shiplap walls—and nice touches like in-room refrigerators, comfy bathrobes, and Keurig

coffee machines.

The Dörr isn’t the only new spot popping up in downtown Sister Bay, once primarily known for the goats grazing on Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant’s grass roof. Now, you can find great coffee shops like Skip Stone Coffee Roasters and Analog Ice Cream and Coffee. Johnson’s children have opened Stabbur, an outdoor beer garden along with Skål at Al Johnson’s, a contemporary Scandinavian shop. There’s even a vegetarian restaurant (except for the brats) called Roots Inn & Kitchen.

Sister Bay is just one of 19 communities making up the peninsula.

Venturing to the area involves some advance planning, along with checking hours of operation, especially if you have a “must visit” hit list. Here are just some of the highlights from our three-day discovery tour:

ART GALLERIES – Don’t miss the art galleries. They are great

and there are more than 100 to visit. Favorites include Fish Creek’s Edgewood Orchard Galleries, Ephraim’s Fine Line Gallery, and the graffiti-clad, waterside Hardy Gallery. On this trip, not far from Egg Harbor, we were glad we left the beaten path to discover Woodwalk Gallery, a great place for viewing art and taking in a summer concert or special dinner in the barn, and the nearby Off the Wheel Pottery, another barn-filled wonder.

SIGNATURE RESTAURANTS – Door County dining was once defined by a few classic “supper club” type restaurants, but now there are plenty of good restaurants offering farm-fresh local products, ethnic cuisine, and artisan bread. Stop by MacReady’s in Egg Harbor for a nice selection of baked goods and sandwiches. Nearby

is the popular Parador, a tapas restaurant open for dinner. Farther north, Ellison Bay’s Wickman House, set in an old country house, receives high ratings for its well-executed drinks menu and flavorful dishes.

HIKING – Home to five state parks and 11 county parks, Door County is a hiking lover’s dream year-round. While our hiking destination was the less crowded Newport State Park, the state’s only dark sky park, we made a stop at Peninsula State Park to check out the recently reopened Eagle Tower. Fully handicap accessible, the tower features an impressive 850-foot ramp that traverses up to the top of the tower revealing panoramic views of the park, nearby islands, and the Upper Michigan shoreline.

THEATER – Catching an outdoor production at Northern Sky

Theater in Peninsula State Park or at Peninsula Players is a summer highlight. Another great option is Door Shakespeare, a local theater company offering performances on the grounds of the beautiful Björklunden Estate, a 423-acre property bequeathed to Lawrence University by Highland Park, Illinois residents Donald and Winifred Boynton. Head to the show early and take time to enjoy the lakeside grounds and the estate’s lovely stave chapel (a medieval wooden church) featuring 41 hand-painted frescos.

BAILEY’S HARBOR – Bailey’s Harbor has certainly evolved.

Located on the east side of the Peninsula, often referred to as the quiet Lake Michigan side, the Door County Brewing Company and Music Hall and Bearded Heart Coffee dominate the main drag.

Heirloom Café & Provisions is a not-to-be-missed breakfast and lunch spot. And I bibbed up for the lobster boil (this is Door County after all) at the lovely waterside Harbor Fish Market & Grille.

WASHINGTON ISLAND – We never would have discovered the aforementioned curvy road had it not been for this adventure. Heading from Gills Rock at the tip of the peninsula toward Northport to catch the car ferry, we came upon the Highway 42 curves. Some say the road was created to avoid telephone poles, others speculate it was the hand of the famed landscape architect Jens Jensen who was a Door County regular—establishing The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay and inspiring the design of The Ridges Sanctuary. choose to believe the second story.

Once on the Island, visitors can choose to take the 90-minute Cherry Train tour or rent bikes, mopeds, or ATVs. We stuck with our car due to time constraints. Those who bring their own bikes can leave from Gills Harbor on the Island Clipper. Day-trippers should not try to walk as Washington Island is 35-miles in circumference.

One of the most impressive attractions is Stavkirke, a stave church inspired by one built in Borgun, Norway in 1150. Created by Washington Island residents and completed in 1995, it’s a sight to behold and reflects the area’s dedication to its roots. Not far away is the aroma of Provence. Fragrant Isle, the Midwest’s largest lavender farm, is a favorite attraction featuring a large shop and farm. Visitors flock here especially in July to see the blooming buds and pick up scented lavender products.

Next stop, Sievers School of Fiber Arts, to learn more about their three and five-day weaving, knitting, and looming classes while checking out their distinctive line of gifts. Nearby, the quirky roadside décor of Fiddlers Green called to us for a closer look. Billed as an adventurer’s oasis, this eatery is brilliantly decorated with vintage finds, and offers live music on a trailer stage. We enjoyed a picnic lunch at Schoolhouse Beach, known for its perfectly smooth white stones. These rocks are so rare they’re only found on five beaches

in the world. If you’re caught pocketing one, it will cost you a $250 fine.

Curious about Rock Island, one mile off Washington Island, we stopped at Jackson Harbor to check it out. From early June to early October, the Karfi Ferry transports visitors to this car and bike-free island that features hiking, swimming, fishing, and overnight “leave no trace” camping. Pottawatomie, the area’s oldest lighthouse and one of 11 in Door County, is located here. Although we were tempted by the quick 15-minute ride over, we had run out of time. We vowed we’d be back. There was just too much left to discover.

Fillies Fantastic

Coach Babbi Barreiro and her Barrington High School hoopsters personified their team motto while netting the top state finish in program history.

arrington High School girls’ basketball coach Babbi Barreiro raised eyebrows and elicited more than a few perplexed looks when she presented team t-shirts to her Fillies for the 2021-2022 season.

The motto “Be For Each Other” didn’t adorn the front of the shirt. Nor did it stretch across the back as a nameplate does.

Barreiro chose instead to position the four-word catchphrase, tilted just so, across the material covering the back of the left shoulder.

“My players wondered what I was thinking as they held up the shirts for the first time,” recalls the 55-year-old Barreiro, an Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of a Fame inductee. “But that area on the back, that’s the spot you usually touch to pat a teammate for doing a good job or to encourage a teammate after a tough moment.

“I wanted our shirts to be different, to stand out.”

Barreiro’s 2021-2022 team—her 30th at BHS—in one word: outstanding. The Fillies went 30-6, which included a 19-game winning streak from January 11 to March 4 and reached the Class 4A State Tournament championship game before losing 5543 to Stevenson High School at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena on March 5.

Six of her hoopsters, including superb junior guard and Purdue University recruit Sophie Swanson, played major minutes during this wondrous winter season, but the rest of the squad—the unsung octet—also proved vital.

“Those eight, including one injured player,” Barreiro says, “took their role of helping our starters prepare for each game seriously. The entire team, such a special group, embraced the team concept.”

The team set seven goals before the season’s start and adhered to each one.

Three of the on-court aims: pursue excellence; choose to be humble and hungry; and never take a play off. In team meetings, coaches read aloud chapters from the book WOLFPACK: How to Come Together, Unleash Our Power, and Change the Game, by two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist and women’s soccer player Abby Wambach.

Four of Barrington’s cagers enjoyed significant success in other sports. Senior forward Laura Mahlum, junior forward Syd Louis, and sophomore guard forward/top rebounder Gwen Adler suited up for the Fillies’ Class 3A third-place volleyball team in the fall. And senior guard Gracie Stagnito helped the girls’ soccer team take fourth place at the Class 4A State Tournament in 2021.

“We spoke with all four, right before the start of our playoffs, and asked, ‘What’s it going to take for us to advance as far as we want to advance?’ ” recounts Barreiro, a Barrington resident since 1998, a winner of 489 career games, and the mother of daughter Jaydyn, 8, and son Greyson, 6. “All of them told me—told us—how important it is to keep our eyes on our goals. Gracie coined it, ‘Eyes on the Prize’— EOTP!” Just before the beginning of March’s state championship game, Barrington Assistant Coach Joe Molloy sat next to Barreiro and encouraged her to look around, to soak up the atmosphere.

“Guess what,” Molloy told Barreiro. “We’re going to play for the state championship.” A poignant moment in a remarkable season that personified EOTP.
