Museums & Heritage Waipu Scottish Migration Museum The Waipu Scottish Migration Museum is proud of its reputation as one of New Zealand’s best small museums. Its “double migration” story, told through a variety of interactive exhibits, shows how almost 1,000 Gaelic-speaking Highland Scots journeyed from the harsh conditions of post-Culloden Scotland to Nova Scotia and then, how their “search for paradise” brought them to Waipu in 1854. The Museum maintains a database of over 100,000 people, recording the genealogy of descendants of the original settlers. There is also a gift shop with a great range of products. Hours: Everyday 10am-4pm. 36 The Centre, Waipu 0510 | 09 432 0746 | www.WaipuMuseum.com

The Kauri Museum Many thousands of objects, from giant kauri logs and steam engines to the smallest button from a WWI army tunic and a miniature doll that rests in a walnut shell have been gathered over the past 60 years to form the Kauri Museum's collection. With so much on display individual items can easily be overlooked, even when right in front of the viewer. A special 60th birthday exhibition opening this month takes items from across the Museum and moves them out of their usual displays to offer a glimpse into history, and the lives of the people who made or owned these precious things. 5 Church Rd, Matakohe, Northland www.KauriMuseum.com
