EDITOR’SNOTE

Get Your Message Across

T

wice a year, the windows of a boutique where I live let all those driving by know what is going on inside. Four, cream-colored T-shirts spell it out — SALE. Like clockwork, these T-shirts make their appearance days after Christmas and then again later in the summer. A letter is sewn onto each shirt. Sometimes, two of the T-shirts are in one window and the other two in the window on the other side of the front door. This time, all four were in one window. Regardless, it’s smart marketing in a community often full of visitors and seasonal residents. Debbie has a background in interior design. And so, I especially enjoy watching her window displays change and wandering through her shop, where her creativity plays out before me. When I visited her store after Christmas, unseasonably warm temperatures meant there were lots of people walking around downtown. During the stops I made that afternoon, I didn’t seem to recognize anyone other than the owners and employees of the shops. This was true in her store as well. In fact, I excused myself from our conversation after I heard the bell by Debbie’s front door jingle again, alerting us that yet another potential customer had decided to visit. But before that, she shared that it is tricky figuring out the best ways to communicate with customers. In business for more than 20 years, Debbie has a website for her boutique and is active on Facebook and Instagram. Like anyone who owns a business today, she knows it takes a variety of marketing methods to get her messages across. This is a lot different from the days of simply placing ads in local newspapers or on radio stations. How interesting it would have been that day to ask those shopping at the boutique what drew them to the store. Was it something Debbie posted on Facebook or Instagram? Was it the T-shirts hanging in the window? Was it a little bit of all those things? As we talked about how she uses the T-shirts to advertise her sales, Debbie noted the letters have faded. But I can attest to how quickly they still jumped out at me when I drove past her store. I walked out of her boutique with something new that day. And it wasn’t one of the items that was on sale. How many more times do you think that happened?

WELCOMEEXCHANGE BY NICOLE LEINBACH

Help! I hired a friend and now feel like I need to fire a friend. Any insight on managing employees who may be too close to home, so to speak?

W

hat a great question — yet at the same time, what a challenge! The unfortunate reality is that often, even the best of friends (or family) does not make the best employees. This can occur for a variety of reasons. But when friends work for friends, their role is often tainted from the start. This is primarily because their relationship as friends is already set in place, so creating a new relationship as employee and boss can be harder to navigate. Both sides of this equation contribute to this scenario. So be sure to keep this in mind as you consider hiring future friends and in your current dilemma, unraveling the challenge you are already in. Since you are already in the position of having employed a friend, consider the tips below to see if you can ease the existing relationship within your work environment.

1. Create communication protocols that are mandatory for all employees, including friends.

Professional standards of communication can often be a challenge for friends to follow since they are used to casually speaking with their friend… or should I say, boss. Setting clear standards of how to communicate in instances, such as requesting time off, calling in sick, asking for assistance, seeking support within a work environment, and more are among the ways to help reduce challenges through communication. Set these expectations with clarity so that if they are delivered to you in any other way, you can simply ask that they refer to your communication guidelines out of respect to the store’s best practices. This is a straightforward way to keep things more streamlined while also helping to potentially avoid other employees thinking you throw your friend “favors” they may not get.

2. Identify in advance of hiring a friend that you need to respectfully treat all team members equally and ask that they understand this.

This may seem obvious, but as you may have learned firsthand or can imagine, not everyone thinks the way you do. Hence – friends, family, neighbors, or anyone else you employ who knows you outside of “boss” mode may have other expectations of your professional relationship. Be sure to set the tone in advance of hiring if you choose to go down this alley in the future. But even amid having hired someone, you can still go backward and set these standards. Whether it is having a heart-to-heart conversation with your “friend” hat on or taking the approach of “boss” mode and making sure that is understood, it simply needs to be stated — and reinforced as needed — that all employees are treated equally. 10  Smart Retailer FEBRUARY 2024

3. Implement employee reviews if you have not already done so. And if you have, be sure to complete these routinely.

Employee reviews offer countless benefits, including the opportunity to discuss challenges, changes, and conflicts. Bi-annually is a great standard of reviews, but if you are feeling the heat to make a change in your store in any way — including with your friend — introducing quarterly reviews for everyone can be a valuable addition to your routine. Sure, it takes added time, but it also helps move toward resolution of challenges and transparency in communication with actionable timelines to work toward. Simply having a professional experience to speak about new expectations, things that need to be improved, and even hearing their perspective on things is beneficial. It is also important to have reviews in place if you do consider firing your friend — or anyone —one day to show trails of what you tried to improve. Finally, a loyal friend should respect the role you have as an employer. Think back to why you hired this friend in the first place and why the two of you are friends. Lean into those sentiments to further unravel how you can relate to them from a perspective they may understand more. In the end, a faithful friend should value your role as store owner or boss and thus respectfully adjust to best support your professional needs. As for the future? Maybe consider if hiring a friend is the right choice at all.

Understand Your Customers Through

Data

LEARN WHERE TO LOOK AND WHAT TO DO

I

BY NICOLE LEINBACH

t is an exciting time for businesses — particularly when it comes to retail. There is more clarity at every touchpoint of store owners’ operations than there has historically been. Gone are the days of wondering if someone visits your website or opens the emails you send. Even in physical environments, clarity is achieved at heightened levels, thanks to modern point-of-sale systems and customer movement trackers that monitor foot traffic in a store — helping retailers better understand their hottest and weakest spots of how customers engage in their stores. Keeping this in mind, there is no doubt clarity for retailers also comes with a complexity of technologies and an ever-evolving global commerce environment. Thankfully, this also comes with data, which is the golden ticket to all the various touchpoints technology offers. The catch? Technology is only valuable if you leverage the data it offers. From social media and POS to email marketing and

30  Smart Retailer FEBRUARY 2024

in-store experiences, this data allows retailers to be proactive to be more profitable in their future decision-making. To help unravel the benefits of data for your unique business, consider the following ways data can be gained.

Social Media

As consumers increasingly turn to social media to help navigate their shopping decisions, it is critical for retailers to understand how customers use social media to help make purchase decisions. From identifying competitor retailers on social media — and more specifically, watching their engagement, followers, and growth of both — to reviewing the social media analysis that platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram offer, there is no shortage of data to review when it comes to social media. Posting, sharing, commenting, and scrolling are simply the basics of social media. Reacting, reviewing, and responding to data generated is where social media really provides growth opportunities for the savviest retail operators. As you prepare your next steps in social media, also set aside time to review the data that comes with being engaged on social media. First, be sure you are set up as a business account, so this data is automatically generated for you.

enter into your URL search engine for product discovery. Shopify reports 81% of shoppers do online research before they make a purchase. This is why it is essential to position your business to attract and convert new customers by investing in a website search engine that easily identifies customer keywords and matches them to all available products. Your website’s search engine should also allow customers to filter items by size, color, category, and brand when needed. Together, these efforts will be rewarded with strengthened data that reveals what your customers genuinely want — reinforcing that data helps retailers become more profitable, but only if they leverage it. Second, take time to review it. Only with this analysis can you proactively make changes based on what you find. Among the data points to consider analyzing are: •

•

•

Most engaged posts and why. Do you think it was an image you shared? Was it a promotion you offered? Was it based on the time of day you posted it? Data will be revealed, but it will take you to figure out its rhyme and reason. Least engaged posts and why. Just as some posts are successful, data reveals why others are not. If you can cross-compare multiple posts with similar lack-of-success stories based on data, this helps you react even better to improve future efforts. Time spent on social media. Have you ever wondered how long people engage on your pages? Data reveals this. Once you have this data, challenge yourself to improve it. Posts live forever, so be sure you create social media content consumers want to dive into.

Finally, when it comes to social media, do not overlook the value of monetizing your time and effort here. Data helps you understand which platforms are strongest, which need to be improved, and which posts you created resonate most with consumers.

Your Business URL

Social media leads many consumers to purchase destinations, so it is no surprise your branded URL website should be among the priorities you focus on when it comes to data. Among the data factors to consider is having a Google Analytics account set up. It is free to do and offers data on where consumers are coming from before clicking on your website. This may include social media but also email blasts you send out, Google search engines, peer review sites like Yelp, and other directories. Once consumers are on your site, make inventory selection easy to navigate. You can review how customers search a website on the backend of most of them. Among the data points to review are key words customers 32  Smart Retailer FEBRUARY 2024

In-Store Foot Traffic

Technology no longer collects just swipes and scrolling data. It can now monitor customer engagement through heat-censored and body movement technologies. For physical retailers, this is a wonderful and vibrant addition to their data collection. An example of this is Dor Technologies, the world’s first thermal-sensing and battery-operated people counter. It can help retailers understand in-store foot traffic, peak hours, conversion rates of hours opened versus sales made, and so much more. The data can support retail decision makers in their future marketing, staffing, and merchandising efforts — and more — truly helping retailers be more effective and profitable, thanks to — you guessed it — data. Finally, as you aim to welcome data into your professional journey, do so with enthusiasm. It is incredibly rewarding to see how data can support your business. But the catch is taking the time to make it happen. Enjoy the process and along the way, you just may be surprised to see how valuable data is.

BUSINESSBRIEFS BY SARAH HOBAN

Want to know what new products your customers really want? Bring them along to a trade show —virtually, of course. John and Mica Mahler own and operate Cook, Cork & Fork, a cooking school and gourmet kitchenware store in Palatine, Illinois. Last year, when they attended the International Housewares Association’s Inspired Home Show, they walked through the show using Facebook Live as they checked out vendor products. Their Facebook followers — they have more than 4,000 — could then give them feedback in real time to help them make more informed buying decisions for new merchandise. John gives Mica credit for the idea. “She’s the social networking guru,” he said. The idea gained more traction, and they started using Instagram live polls to get customer feedback on products they were considering for the store — even down to color preferences. The Mahlers then provide inventory updates on when the products will arrive and provide background on why they picked the product. “It provides a great opportunity to engage with our customers, and we’re finding that they feel more vested in the products,” said John. The couple is on the home show’s advisory board and intend to repeat their Facebook walkthrough at this March’s show in Chicago. John admits consistent use of social media can be challenging. “It’s difficult as a small-business owner to find time, and sometimes the longer-term rewards are harder to see,” he said. But John said business owners should just “jump in” and start experimenting. “It costs very little, and it makes me smarter about how I’m doing and what I’m selling. At the end of the day, we small businesses are all in this together,” he said. 34  Smart Retailer FEBRUARY 2024

Not-So-Secret Codes One inexpensive way to build more customer engagement is with creative use of QR codes. Writing on retailcustomerexperience.com, Sharat Potharaju notes QR codes can be versatile, cost-effective, and a way to help measure marketing effectiveness. Potharaju, CEO of Beaconstac, a QR code management platform, points out that the codes can be used to: •Offer coupons or discount offers — even in-store. •Allow customers to sign up for newsletters, access feedback forms, and check product information through websites and product videos. •Promote a business’s social media platforms on print ads or posters. •Complete online cashless payments by creating checkout stations in the store where customers can scan a QR code and pay for purchases online.

BUSINESSBRIEFS

Burnishing Your Brand Think about large national brands with a strong loyal customer base — Costco, Etsy, Apple. But you do not have to be a big corporation with a big marketing budget to build brand loyalty. Small businesses can do it, too. Mary Kyamko, a content marketer writing on crowdspring.com, lists 17 steps small businesses can take to stand out and develop devoted customers. Among them are: •Offer great service after the purchase. Send follow-up emails asking how the shopping experience went, and how the customer likes and uses the purchase. If the customer may need additional support or tips to set up or use the purchase, mention that, too. •Offer a loyalty program. •Give back to your community or a cause on either a national or local level. •Pay attention to your visual identity and do not hesitate to invest in good design, for both print and digital promotion. First impressions do count. Kyamko differentiates brand loyalty from customer loyalty, saying brand loyalty drives customers less by price. Instead, it is “rooted in perception, encompassing elements like brand image and customer experience,” she said. Customer loyalty, on the other hand, is driven more by competitive prices and discounts. Visit www.crowdspring.com/blog/brand-loyalty to read more of Kyamko’s recommendations.

As retailers reinvent their loyalty strategies, it’s important not to get too fixated on the retail transaction itself. Instead, the focus should be on truly understanding individuals, helping them take control over their lives, reducing the complexity they face in achieving their desires, building communities, and providing memorable experiences. — JILL STANDISH, GLOBAL HEAD OF ACCENTURE’S RETAIL INDUSTRY GROUP, ON FORBES.COM

References: Asking the Right Questions One of the most essential parts of the hiring process is checking references. Job candidates can boast an impressive resume and give a great interview. But references can give a more realistic view as to what kind of employee the candidate might really be. Writing on trainingmag.com, Executive Recruiter Cheryl Hyatt suggests four areas to consider when evaluating references: •Who is listed? Three or four references is a good start and consider if the references are appropriate to the type of job under consideration. •Have the references given permission to be references? “If a reference has no idea why you are calling them — or worse, sounds perturbed at the license taken — it should give you pause,” Hyatt said. •Ask focused questions to determine specific examples of the candidate’s work skills when speaking to a reference. •How is the candidate as a coworker? Even if the candidate has the right skills for the position, they may not be a good fit for your team if they come with a difficult personality.

Show and Tell and Sell LEARN WHICH TOOLS WORK BEST TO DESIGN DISPLAYS 38  Smart Retailer FEBRUARY 2024

I

t happens to each of us at one point or another. You see items beautifully laid out and displayed within reach but wonder if it is OK to scoop up those napkin rings that are holding those napkins oh-so stylishly. Doing so might make a mess. But where are those napkin rings? Shopping is supposed to be fun — not a frustrating scavenger hunt. A tempting, mouth-watering display of props and merchandise is laid out in the way you might want to utilize them, but a search of the immediate area does not reveal the product. This crosses the line between tempting and teasing. Tempting the customer? That is the goal. Teasing them? That is self-defeating. In my opinion, this is more of an issue with displaying hardlines (tabletop, linens, decorative accessories) versus fashion and softlines. When displaying clothing that includes the use of fashion accessories (scarves, jewelry, bags), it is understood that the customer will find those items in their respective departments, not directly adjacent. As context: When times are tight, visual merchandising is usually the first expense to be trimmed. “I’m sure we’ll be fine if we just put a banner in the window,” many think. Nope. Trust me — that does not work. We saw this trend start in big-box retailers, with them then redoubling efforts a few years later.

The perfect blend of a stylized tabletop display — tiny plants or leaves at your usual setting, anyone? That unexpected propping is eye-catching, and the shallow bowl serves as a bit of a merchandise fixture, with it being adjacent, thematic, and easily shoppable.

Left: If short on table space, take inspiration from this setup at Los Poblanos in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Brimming with product, there are baskets underneath, as well as chairs and a small bench/riser to elevate merchandise within the grouping.

While there are many terrific industry resources for props and décor, I have always been lucky when I shop at such retailers as Pier 1 Imports and World Market. It is worth noting that the bowls can nest if needed and the basket’s lid (on page 40) is also a tray. Flexibility is everything!

Online-only retailers? “Our customers don’t need brick and mortar,” they may say. Really? Then explain Warby-Parker, Untuckit, Wayfair, and other big names that doubled back on their original statements. Customers do not want banners, some said. They want beds. Dining room tables. Holiday décor. Likewise, customers still want brick and mortar. Purchasing a known item or replenishing an existing product online is convenient.

smart-retailer.com  39

DISPLAY&DESIGN But trying something on? Seeing ways to dress it up or down? Customers still want to visit stores, and we need to make it worth their time. Engage. Educate. Let us also remember manipulation and exaggerating for effect are important parts of effective visual merchandising. For example, when dressing beds, always use queen-size pillows in regular size pillowcases. Place two to three down comforters under the bedspread for extra volume. How many throw pillows might you use on your own bed? Four? In the store, place six pillows and a throw on the bed. A tray and tea service are clever ideas as well. Likewise, tablescapes have become their own art form. Feel free to overturn those bowls and balance cups and saucers on top. Mix and match patterns and get creative with table linens. Runners do not have to be traditional sizes or materials, etc.

Tools of the Trade: Making Life Simpler

Not that I need any additional reasons to love nesting tables but of all the fixtures we rely upon, these are amazingly utilitarian, functional, and flexible. Do you need both surfaces to accommodate new arrivals or extensive categories? No problem. A bit sold down, need to consolidate merchandise, or increase aisle width? Again, no problem. Just scoot that smaller, lower table underneath the other one — out of sight, out of mind. Trays are not simply for breakfast in bed. They can be stacked to create height or used to hold specific products adjacent to a display. Equally useful are serving platters, large shallow bowls, baking pans, and even the occasional muffin tin. Other options include baskets, and I would add a caveat to that suggestion. Simply because they are woven does not necessarily mean all baskets play nicely together — visually, that is. As best you can, ensure the basketry is congruent, with complementary shades of brown, similar weave patterns, etc. Please remember that selecting these groupings is as important as creating your display. If you really have no additional room on the table or platform, this is when one might pull up a chair, stool, or ottoman. If it is a flat, stable surface, you can stack linens, books, or other less fragile elements. I discourage stacking plates, mugs, or items that are easily knocked over by strollers, children, or even a large purse. When all else fails and there are simply no flat surfaces for you to use but you would like to keep the product adjacent to the display, look for an étagère. These shelf units are usually tall,

Earlier articles have celebrated the value of branches for suspending props and merchandise overhead. In this installation, the blonde basketry complements the same, lightly colored birdhouses and helps corral the many, tiny clay posts and vases. PHOTO COURTESY OF REFOUND OBJECTS, CORBRIDGE, UNITED KINGDOM

narrow, and open on all sides, hence their unbeatable value. Because they stand away from walls or in aisle intersections, this fixture’s flexibility makes it a must-have, allowing shopping from any direction. As always, remember you can certainly expect (and direct) your shoppers to wander through the store and hunt down your destination businesses. This keeps your optimal, front-of-house space available for eye-catching displays and/or merchandise in stock.

indy Reusser has always loved and had a knack for creating. Her children were young when she started making crafts to sell in her home. Cindy did this so she could stay home with her children while her husband, Neal, worked. In 1999, Cindy and Neal, along with her father, Earl, invented the LastingLite Electric Candle. Her business began to grow, with Neal

joining her in 2000. Their company is CR Designs. Neal and Cindy eventually felt a pull to open a retail space. The LastingLite Emporium opened on Sept. 11, 2015, in downtown Berne, Indiana. They own the gift shop. Their daughter, Jennifer Reusser, is the manager, and their daughter-inlaw, Shelby Reusser, oversees the accounting. “Everyone working in our store is either family or lifelong family friends,” Jennifer said. Berne is a small community of about 4,000 residents. It was settled by Swiss immigrants who were fleeing religious persecution in the mid-1880s. “Our great-great-grandparents are some of the first settlers to the area,” Jennifer said. “We also have a large Amish community in the area.” Jennifer said they looked at several spaces for their gift shop before finding the perfect location in 2014 and purchasing the building later

that year. “We had been looking for a retail location that could also house our wholesale division for several years. We found our current location through a friend,” she said. “Once we started the updates, we realized that it would just work for retail because of the improvements that would be needed to make it up to code. Prior to opening, we had a smart-retailer.com  41

small retail space in our manufacturing location. We joke now that that space would fit in our two display windows.” When it was time to choose a name for the store, they decided to incorporate the name of the product they invented and manufacture — the LastingLite Electric Candle. “Since we wanted to showcase our product, we decided to include the name of the product and then call it an emporium since we were going to offer many other products,” Jennifer said. Retail was new to them. She said they had conversations with their customers for advice and ideas for items to sell in the store. “Together we pressed on and learned along the way,” Jennifer said. “COVID-19 was also a challenge for us. We saw that a shutdown was coming, so we quickly put together a website and had it working by the time we had to close. Our retail manager would ship or deliver packages to our local customers during the five weeks that we had to be shut down.” 42  Smart Retailer FEBRUARY 2024

What They Sell

The LastingLite Emporium specializes in seasonal home décor and gifts. “We offer artificial florals, home décor, children/baby, candles, kitchen, pantry, and a few boutique items,” Jennifer said. The product categories they choose for their gift shop are based on the distinct types of LastingLite candles they have. “Since we make candles for the kitchen, we wanted kitchen items to sell with that display and so forth,” she said. “We’ve changed a few things based on what our customers are interested in.” Their LastingLite candles are their No. 1 seller, with the bereavement line selling the most. “We sell on average about two bereavement candle sets per day,” Jennifer said. “Our other top sellers are our home décor and artificial florals. Fort Wayne has a chocolatier, and we offer their chocolates in our store. Since Fort Wayne is an hour away, people like the convenience of shopping local.”

The LastingLite Emporium has an online store and offers in-store pickup or shipping. They have shipped products to 46 states. The gift shop’s typical customers are women aged 35-plus. What do customers say about the store? One person’s comment on a Facebook post was, “Your store is so appreciated, along with the kindness of the clerks.”

Customer Service, Connections

The LastingLite Emporium offers customers a rewards card. Customers get a stamp on the card for every $20 they spend. “When their card is full ($240), they can use it to get 25% off any one in-stock item,” Jennifer said. “The cards don’t expire, so our customers love to hold on to them and spend them when they want to.” When asked what sets their customer service apart from other stores in their area, she said, “We engage with every customer who enters our store, welcoming them in. Our staff is friendly,

personable, and have good conversation skills.” Many people appreciate that Jennifer knows them by name. She said what makes The LastingLite Emporium different from other stores in its community is the large variety of different home décor and quality florals it offers that are hard to find nearby. There are several things that make the gift shop successful. “We work on creating an overall positive shopping experience — from the smell to the lighting, to the sounds, the displays, and the customer service,” Jennifer said. They participate in events they hold with other downtown businesses. “Most of these events are fundraisers for our downtown beautification,” she said. “We have a Cookie Crawl in the spring and a Chocolate Walk in the fall. Together we also have other sales/ shopping events throughout the year.” She said their Instagram stories seem to be the gift shop’s most effective marketing strategy. In fact, people often tell Jennifer they love watching her and seeing what is in the store.

LastingLite Electric candles, artificial florals, seasonal home decor items, gifts for children, and more fill 3,000 square feet of space inside the gift shop.

The LastingLite Emporium connects with the community. “We give donations to local benefits helping families in need, we participate in local events, and we advertise in our local paper and radio,” she said. When asked what she likes best about what she does, Jennifer said, “Meeting and talking with our customers and helping to create beautiful spaces within their homes.” Her advice to those who have recently opened a store is, “You can’t be everything to everyone. Find your customers and serve them well.” She said, “Step out in faith when you feel that this is what you are supposed to do. You have to buy with confidence, with enough products to fill your store, and be willing to try new things. Appreciate your staff, do kind gestures for them. Your store is only as good as your customer service.”
