ith the run-up to Christmas fast approaching and everyone looking forward to a well-earned break. This year has been very busy for business and Master Joiners. We all need time to recharge our batteries, spend some time with family and friends, and just relax. Professionalism and the balance between quality and quantity are two sides of the same coin. While it's essential to maintain quality in your work, it's equally important to ensure that you are delivering enough quantity to meet your customers' demands. This is where professionalism comes into play. The concept of quality versus quantity has been around for ages. The word "quality" originated from the Greek word poiotes, which means "what-sort-of-ness." The ﬁrst example of the phrase quality versus quantity is found in Rome circa 8 BC – 68 AD.

While it's essential to maintain quality in your work, it's equally important to ensure that you are delivering enough quantity to meet your customers' demands. There are different dimensions to the concept of quality versus quantity, such as kitchens, relationships, infrastructure, policies, time, life, and control. While quality can easily be prioritized over quantity and vice versa, it is essential to consider both virtues equally. Focusing too much on quality can lead to a decrease in quantity, while focusing too much on quantity can lead to a decrease in quality.

For professionals like Master Joiners, prioritizing one over the other can lead to unhappy customers. The secret to maintaining a balance between quality and quantity lies in the way you practice your craft. Everyone has their own way of ensuring they use quality products for their quantity of work, but for the quality of the profession, these secrets must be shared at regional meetings, conferences, and online forums. In conclusion, professionalism is all about maintaining a balance between quality and quantity. The two are not mutually exclusive, and it's essential to ensure that you are delivering both to your customers. By sharing your secrets of managing quality and quantity, you can help elevate the profession as a whole and ensure that customers are satisﬁed with the work they receive. Quality over quantity may be a tale as

Summer is Here

t’s good to see Summer is on it’s way at last. It has been an interesting year what with storms and ﬂooding on the one hand and an election on the other. Business still seems to be holding it’s own which is a real plus. How this new government responds to the various issues at hand will indeed be interesting. In the meantime you have another issue to get stuck into! Of interest to me particularly is the feature on stone cutting machinery. The use of stone and other high density materials in the kitchen and bathroom has remained a popular choice in the middle to upper end of the residential market. Knowing how these materials are cut and processed adds a new dimension accordingly. We also have a great feature on pantry space and its utilization designed to suit both budgets and kitchen spaces. A third popular feature looks at the latest in handles in pictures. Always surprising to me just how many there are and the variety available.

Something we do a lot of is stories on various businesses out there, who they are and what they do (and use!) This issue is no exception: a look at the stone cutting operation at Northern Benchtops in Whangarei, the latest from Robertson & Sinclair based in Auckland and kitchen manufacturers Kitchen Elements out of Wellington. Being at the coalface has kept us up with the play which in turn hopefully keeps some of you out there also up to the play. It’s at the heart of what we do as a magazine. Biesse open house supports child cancer Biesse New Zealand held an Open House over two days on 21 & 22 September at their showrooms in Wiri, Auckland which saw a continual flow of the regions cabbies and kitchen manufacturers experience first hand the latest innovations and solutions on offer in nesting, edgeing, 5 Axis, drilling, tooling and software from the Italian machinery manufacturer. In conjunction with the event Auckland kitchen manufacturer Kitchen Mania offered a tour of their newly appointed factory for a donation to the Child Cancer Foundation. Biesse provided transport from their showroom to the recently fitted out factory in Mt Wellington where attendees were able to view the set up of a modern factory running Biesse gear. With Biesse matching the donations the two companies were able to donate a substantial sum for the benefit of the Child Cancer Foundation. Biesse added to the Open House experience by providing space to showcase some of their industry support partners across the software, tooling and dust extraction sectors, providing a one stop preview for all machining requirements. And when it was lunch time Italian hospitality was to the fore with wood fired pizza and refreshments.

aster Joiners is an association of skilled joinery practitioners. Its supplier members provide quality materials, tools and techniques for creating durable and aesthetically pleasing bespoke joinery products. Customers have enthusiastic expectations for their projects and the Joiner–supplier relationships play a key role in delivering on those expectations. High-quality materials not only enhance the ﬁnal product's aesthetic appeal but also its durability and longevity. Master Joiners supplier members provide a variety of materials, including timber, hardware, panel products, components, and accessories, allowing joinery practitioners to create customized products. When it comes to joinery, quality materials are an integral part of producing quality products.

The May Master Joiners conference exhibition proﬁled 30 industry suppliers. Master Joiners caught up with some supplier members recently and asked what joinery practitioners could look forward to in 2024, here is what they shared with us.

Waikato/Bay of Plenty 2023 Apprentice Awards another success The 2023 Apprentice Awards were held on 2 November at the Onyx Restaurant in Cambridge. Bruce Delaney and Dean Fisher from WINTEC oﬃciated. The evening was a great success as always. The Awards mark a celebration for the wood joinery apprentices in the Waikato / Bay Of Plenty region. Carlo Giobbi opens the doors to the second generation of Sicam

SICAM The international furniture sector recognizes the eﬀectiveness of the format

With these words Carlo Giobbi – founder of SICAM, the international exhibition of components, accessories and semi-ﬁnished products for the furniture industry – announced that he wanted to give continuity and further impetus to the event by involving Carolina and Michele Giobbi in an even stronger and more direct way alongside their father in this endeavor.

he 14th edition of SICAM, which was held in Pordenone, Italy, from Tuesday 17th to Friday 20th October, ended with a response beyond the best expectations: with more than 650 exhibitors from Italy and 34 foreign countries, the show marked a real confirmation of the strength and liveliness of the components and accessories sector for the furniture industry, marking the moment of choices and decisions for furniture that will be proposed in the main international exhibitions over the next year. There were around 9,000 companies, for a total of well over 20,000 attendees in the four opening days, who from 112 countries all over the world showed up at the fair in Pordenone to meet their best suppliers. In the 18,420m 2 across ten halls, many new novelties were proposed in all sectors of the supply chain. As always, high-profile business meetings and commercial relations were the characterizing feature of the Show: "They confirmed themselves as a strong point of the SICAM format" underlined Carlo Giobbi, who took the opportunity of this edition to announce the handover of the management of SICAM to Carolina Giobbi and Michele Giobbi. SICAM is a complex but very high-performance machine: the companies that participate, both as exhibitors and visitors, continue to confirm a very high loyalty rate. Already at the end of the four days of the fair, the organizers received more applications than in the past to participate in the next edition: a clear and unequivocal

There was interest and a lot of curiosity around the debut of "Enjoy Pordenone with SICAM", the platform created by the Municipality of Pordenone to celebrate a fair that attracts thousands of people who were able to participate in over 90 appointments, meetings, exhibitions and initiatives in the city center. The appointment for the 2024 edition is therefore already set in Pordenone, from Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th October.

The news - communicated to the numerous journalists present at the opening press conference of SICAM2023, was greeted with long and moving applause. Carlo Giobbi immediately wanted to clarify that this is certainly not a handover, but the dutiful recognition of the work done by his children in recent years and an incitement to continue a highly successful path in a time that requires fair organizers to be up to date with the transformations underway. “We must look to the future , demonstrating that we have the will and energy to enrich our position as an eﬀective meeting point between people with new content,” concluded Giobbi. “The vision, skills and experience of Carolina and Michele will allow us, I am sure, to continue to represent a quality experience and a concrete business opportunity for the world of furniture supplies”.

Have you been to visit the Blum space at the Wellington Design Library? B

lum have created an interactive display at the new Wellington Design Library on Thorndon Quay. The space is equipped with Blum's complete range of hardware, enabling trade professionals to get 'hands-on' with products while seeing how they operate in situ. Blum Product Manager Claye McBride helped design and decide what to display. He's an experienced cabinet maker in a previous life, and his insights and tips for cabinet makers are priceless. How does the new Blum space help cabinet makers in their work? It helps with being able to explain what Blum products do because seeing really is believing. People need to touch, feel and see how it works in action to understand a product fully. The cabinetmaker can also bring in their customers to help their sales process. They can use the Blum display to explain products, select a product group or motion technology, and even check the colour of products they are considering for a project. What would you say to anyone who visited the old location of the Wellington Design Library but has yet to see the new one? The Blum display is completely new. Nothing from the old space was used, and the area is five times the size, so it has a lot more to see and experience. Since last year's opening, we've added our new box system, MERIVOBOX. It's set up in the kitchen area, so customers can see and feel the difference. Apart from that, the Blum display has evolved to become an even more inviting site for cabinet makers and designers to collaborate with their customers. As a former cabinet maker, what features are particularly interesting to people in the trade? I feel the thing that will interest them the most is the products they may not have used before. Products like SPACE STEP, SERVO-DRIVE, or even EXPANDO T. Seeing them set up and experiencing how they work in practice is always beneficial. I find when trade people see things in the flesh, they suddenly have an idea or a job they can use it on. Is there anything else in the Blum space your clients should know about? There are some great practical concepts for storage and ideas using different materials. For example, there are handle-less designs with thin fronts on cupboards using stone. The other thing you'll find is how storage can be creatively implemented throughout the home. If you're curious about what's possible with storage, the Blum space at the Wellington Design Library is a place to stimulate your imagination.

Kitchen Elements resetting factory operations

Bespoke kitchen manufacturer Kitchen Elements have been designing and manufacturing kitchens for almost two decades. Until recently they have been outsourcing most of their cut and clash requirements. The early 2023 installation of a Morbidelli X200 CNC and a Stefani KD Air Fusion edgebander, both from New Zealand SCM agent Machines R Us changed all that, we spoke to factory manager Ryan Calver on what the changes have meant. Based in the Wellington suburb of Thorndon, Kitchen Elements have designers and clients throughout the country, they specialise in the manufacture and install of high end bespoke kitchens, “we do a lot of different stuff, different designs, different materials - it keeps the guys interested,” says Ryan. Until recently all their board requirements were cut and clashed by another local supplier. The arrangement worked well for years but ongoing growth meant the benefits of cutting and edging inhouse became more compelling and they decided to take more control of this part of their business by setting up a nesting cell and edgebander. “We went with SCM for both machines because we recognised SCM as a good brand and most of our staff had used and appreciated their machinery previously, we had also dealt with Machines R Us before and they had been good to deal with.” Planned during covid and looking to take a year to get the machines they had selected built and transported from Italy, Machines R Us lent them a similar machine for that period which allowed them to get up to speed on all aspects of the change. “The loan machine enabled us to come to grips with things like tooling requirements and staff training and enabled us to become aware of what we needed to know,” says Ryan. Installation of the new machinery was booked for the Christmas period in 2022 when the factory is a bit quieter and both machines were installed at the same time in what was a pretty seamless change with little interference to business. “Machines R Us support has been very good right from the beginning. Their technician spent a week with us after the install to run through the day to day operation and train up our staff, and we were pretty much running from that point. The result have been great, the Morbidelli X200 auto loads sheets from a stack and auto labels parts as they are cut. They can then be loaded straight to the edgebander which sits next to it while the Morbidelli processes the next sheet.

“The Stefani KD Air Fusion is the perfect partner to the CNC. With a loading table and return system, labour is very eﬃcient, one man can operate both machines easily. The laser tape set-up is simple and easy to use, we can edgeband straight to the carcass with no need for sanding, and no glue means no clean up. The ﬁnish is pretty impressive, the 1mm tape we use provides near invisible lines and clients love the look.

“The purchase has meant a dramatic and positive change to work ﬂow in the factory. It has been a big learning curve but it is fantastic having a CNC on site, the eﬃciencies are huge in terms of timing and scheduling and have really improved our capacity and turnaround - and it’s great not to have to go outside the factory for any remedial work, or have to do it by hand. ” ends Ryan. 

Citterio Giulio, FIT’s Italian cabinet handle supplier Citterio Giulio’s origins lie in farming country in Brianza, Italy, in the recovery years after WWII, when hundreds of small workshops sprang up, then quickly became industrial units. To find out more Bob Nordgren from JOINERS Magazine met up with Tommy Adams from Northern Benchtops Ltd based in the port district of Whangarei who has recently decked himself out with new Farnese stone cutting machinery from New Zealand supplier Proform CNC Ltd. Tommy bought an existing business called Northern Laminates with his father back in 2011 making laminate benchtops for the local market north of Auckland. Tommy recalls “Although we started out making custom made laminate benchtops I soon saw the opportunities that existed for the solid stone market especially engineered stone and porcelain which was becoming more and more popular in the modern kitchen, especially at the higher end.” By 2014 he had bought out his father, renamed the business

Northern Benchtops and established an adjacent second factory housing a stone cutting and fabrication operation to tap into that market. Today, he with a team of twenty, run a close knit operation catering to both the stone and laminate market with a wide range of bespoke made product including benchtops, splashbacks, vanities, sinks and hearths from their 1200 square metre facility. The interesting thing is that all the machinery for benchtop manufacturing comes from Rob Hutchings and the team from

Proform CNC Ltd. “From the outset we established a really good working relationship with Steve (Fiﬁeld) and consequently Rob who sold not only their own brand but importantly the full Farnese range from Farnese in Australia. Their attention to detail and the great service they provide has kept us with them ever since.” comments Tommy. Things have moved forward in recent times with the introduction of the Farnese Sawjet. “The base is the Technicut stone cutting Bridge Saw to which has been added the only operational Farnese sawjet

in New Zealand” notes Tommy. Their union has been in Tommy’s words truly seamless. “We have moved from hand to automated cutting in one step and with good checking systems from the template stage to cutting it works a treat.” The secret to the Sawjet is its solid construction which ensures the reliability and longevity of the machine. Its reduced footprint is ideal for fabricators who may need both a bridge saw and a water jet in a conﬁned operational space or don’t have the capital to invest in two separate machines.

The combination cutting head, a marriage of saw blade and waterjet, allows for limitless cut out possibilities from easy, speedy straight cuts to sink cut outs, tap holes, powerpoint recesses and other curves required doing away with many downstream jobs from the production process. Tommy comments “All we do is wet cut and this machine is good for cutting natural stone and engineered stone but is really outstanding to cut the hard to process stuﬀ like porcelain and ultra compact surfaces and was a key reason we went for this configuration. The nicety of having the saw blade at your disposal means a reduced use of the waterjet for just the hard to get to areas or shapes which minimises it’s running and maintenance costs. In fact, we have found having the waterjet with a saw blade is the best to get the quickest and most cost eﬃcient method to cut most materials.”

Add to this an effective touchscreen control panel and good software and Tommy says he is really happy with the results. The business has increased the number of benchtops cut per month, in no small part due to their new technology. “We are well placed to serve our growing market with this new machinery from Farnese but like all hardworking machinery, good service back up from Rob and his team at Proform is a vital part of our success.”

The success of the Lamello system is due to the simplicity of the tooling used and a very eﬀective joining method

Lamello Connecting & inspiring with strength & pedigree The name Lamello has been around since the mid 1950’s and has long been recognised as the leading jointing technology used by cabinetmakers, joiners, furniture and kitchen manufacturers, carpenters, shop fitters ... the list goes on. Since then, the ongoing innovative system solutions produced by Lamello AG have had a huge influence on how craftsmen join things, be they solid wood items or various MDF type products. Here in New Zealand their range has been sold by agents Robertson & Sinclair Ltd for many years now. Bob Nordgren had a chance to catch up with one of R&S Lamello specialists Tony Christiansen, to find out more about the product range. The original biscuit jointer system was invented back in 1955 by Herman Steiner based in Liestel in Switzerland. This was followed by the first stationary Lamello biscuit jointer in 1958 and then the ﬁrst hand-operated portable biscuit jointer in 1968. In 1969 Lamello AG was formed under the leadership of founder Herman Steiner. Many more inventions that enhanced the original system have followed. Today there are distributors in ﬁfty countries and more than 400 sales partners around the globe. I asked Tony, who has been with Robertson & Sinclair for about six years now, why this biscuit system has been so successful. “The Lamello biscuit system has become the product of choice for a great number of furniture and cabinetmakers here in New

Zealand, in both the commercial and residential sectors. The success of the Lamello system is due to the simplicity of the tooling used and a very effective joining method”. Tony explains further, “The time saving and efficiency of the Lamello system has been further enhanced by the introduction of the P System in the last decade. This is a timesaving joining system with formlocking anchoring. This time saving element is particularly useful for onsite assembly of all sorts of cabinetry for residential homes and commercial buildings. The success of the P system connectors lies in them being made from fibreglass reinforced plastic which is both strong and stable. They are also lever zinc die cast which adds to their strength. These properties make them one of the best and most trusted connector systems available.”

The Lamello System is popular because it provides a strong and stable joint and the system itself is easy to use and reduces assembly time. Tony explains. “It’s based on a 4mm groove and oﬀers a great variety of joining solutions. They are all easily assembled and disassembled and can all be machined with any of the two Lamello biscuit jointers available - the Classic X or Zeta P2.” There is also a clever drilling system (the Cabineo) to complement the Lamello and P Systems. The Cabineo is a one piece furniture connector and is installed into a drilled or routered shape”, explains Tony. (continued over page)

“No edge drilling is needed, the machining happens solely in the surface and because of this the Cabineo can be used with any railand-pod or nested CNC machine. This makes it great for any ﬂatpack assembly involving any number of angles. “It’s clean and easy,” comments Tony. “No glue and no clamping is needed. For easy assembly of shelving you can’t go past the Divario system, which requires no glue and is a self-clamping connector so, again, no clamping is required. The Tenso system is by far the most popular one with Robertson a n d S i n c l a i r ’s c u s t o m e r s . Although the Tenso connector does require gluing, it remains easy and quick to put together and is a self-clamping connector that eliminates the need for clamping.

second time around Maggie and Gno Ping Zhang have an interesting story. Their journey in the kitchen industry took them from owning and operating Eden Cabinets in Auckland between 2015 and 2019, followed by 18 months back in their homeland China, to opening another kitchen manufacturing business, Oceanside Kitchens, in Wiri earlier this year. Their motivation for the move back to China was to be closer to aging family members. With changes to their family situation and a challenging economic climate back in China, they decided to return to New Zealand. Upon their return the couple got straight back into the kitchen industry. Maggie took on a role as a designer, while Gno Ping worked as an installer. Their prior experience at Eden Cabinets, combined with the valuable insights they gathered while working for other industry players, ignited Gno Ping's enthusiasm to re-establish their own business. Gno Ping convinced Maggie they should leverage their experience and have another crack at running their own business. With a very clear pathway of what’s needed to be successful in the kitchen industry, they went about making it happen. Maggie shared some of the lessons they learned while working for others, which included team management, materials sourcing, negotiation skills, the signiﬁcance of showroom presence, and the importance of selecting the right machinery. Notably, they had explored machinery options in China before returning to New Zealand and observed trends in the industry, such as the widespread use of PUR glue in Chinese manufacturing and the prevalence of Homag edgebanders among high-quality cabinetry manufacturers.

Gno & Maggie Ping have benefited from their earlier experiences in kitchen manufacture including the importance of selecting the right machinery.

It was not uncommon for these manufacturers to use the combination of a Chinese edgebander for carcass processing and a Homag for the important decorative panels. With these insights in mind, Maggie and Gno Ping met with John Walton – a familiar face from their days at Eden Cabinets - at the Jacks showroom in Auckland. Maggie says, “we knew the edgebander would be crucial to the success of our new business. We had to be able to manufacture cabinets with high quality edgebanding. John recommended the Homag 1130 AT with laser tape processing capabilities. It would give us a better ﬁnish than using PUR glue and with much less hassle.” The couple had initially considered importing a CNC machine from China themselves. However,after witnessing the capabilities of the WDMAX CNC in the Jacks showroom, they were swayed by its speed, robust construction and compliance to New Zealand’s high safety standards. The icing on the cake was the attractive pricing, making the choice to invest in the WDMAX an obvious one.

Their ability to cut, drill, edgeband and assemble 80 sheets of cabinetry in a single day for an urgent order underscores the efficiency and potential of their machinery. Fast forward six months, and both the Homag edgebander and WDMAX CNC have been running seamlessly. A problem with a pneumatic sensor on the Homag was promptly addressed by the Jacks Service team, who installed a replacement part the very next day. The WDMAX CNC has also been great, says Maggie. “It’s so good to know the machine is safe and compliant. We don’t need to worry about our workers getting injured by the machine. It’s also really clean. Our previous CNC at Eden Cabinets would leave dust everywhere. The WDMAX leaves no dust. The whole workshop is clean and healthy for our staff. Also, the 2800mm bed size is also a big advantage for floor to ceiling panels. We no longer need

to join two panels together. It’s also good to know that in future we can add labelling, loading and unloading units to the WDMAX to increase productivity as our business grows.” Oceanside Kitchens is still in the process of building up its operations but is already experiencing busy days. Their ability to cut, drill, edgeband and assemble 80 sheets of cabinetry in a single day for an urgent order underscores the eﬃciency and potential of their machinery. Their core objective is to maintain a high standard of service and quality. The return of many smaller builders who were their clients during the Eden Cabinets era, in conjunction with positive word-of-mouth referrals, has meant that they've scarcely needed any marketing. Anticipating the beneﬁts of a new businessoriented government, Maggie and Gno Ping are optimistic about the future. Double the experience, double the success.

Smaller sizes due to kinematics with axial power transmission Power transmission in the new gearbox is axial, not radial – a most ingenious idea. The single teeth in the tooth carrier, which are arranged in a gear ring, are axially driven by a polygonal disc with two high points into the ﬂat wheel with special helical crown gearing, similar to a screwing movement. This axial kinematicis responsible for the compact outer dimensions of the new Galaxie® in the standard sizes typically encountered in robotics applications.

Axial function principle enables high rigidity in small sizes along with a high ratio The teeth of the miniaturized Galaxie® gearbox are fundamental to the axial function principle. They are designed as so-called “crown” teeth, in other words they have more ﬂanks per tooth and thus more flank surface, enabling almost complete surface contact when in mesh – in contrast to strain wave gearboxes with linear contact. In addition, the movement of the polygonal disc in the new Galaxie® means the majority of the crown teeth constantly contribute to torque transmission and torsional rigidity. The bottomline is three times better rigidity compared to strain wave gearboxes. The crown tooth concept also has another advantage: it allows the new Galaxie® to achieve ratios of i=60/61 and in the future even higher – which is a key performance requirement in robotics applications. Large hollow shaft: ample space for cables and leads The axial kinematics of the miniaturized Galaxie® pave the way for more compact sizes

– creating extra space inside the gearbox. The outcome is an almost 50 percent larger hollow shaft diameter, for example 31 millimeters in size 90 – a full ten millimeters more than strain wave gearboxes with the same footprint. Even more cables, tubes or other connections can be laid inside robots as a result. Larger bending radii are likewise possible – with significantly less risk of cable breakage. From 90 Nm to over 7500 Nm from a single source Regardless of whether the kinematic principle is radial or axial, the entire Galaxie® class meanwhile ships in sizes from 90 mm to 300 mm outer diameter with maximum acceleration torques from 150 Nm to over 7500 Nm – a range unmatched by any other single-source manufacturer in this form.

Supreme design award winners On Friday 8 September at a beautiful gala ceremony in Auckland, the best kitchens and bathrooms in New Zealand were announced as part of the 2023 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards. The Supreme Kitchen Design Award was awarded to Morgan Cronin of Cronin Kitchens in Auckland for his tremendous design of a stone kitchen located in the suburb of Remuera. An elegant and luxurious space with warm tones and dramatic natural stone, the kitchen was created using expanses of oak panelling and a large, bold, floating stone boxed island. Elements including a secret door to the scullery elevate the space and add intrigue.

Judges of the NKBA EID Awards, called the design stunning and memorable. “This is a very striking kitchen. The stone works very well with the timber, a lot of consideration has gone into the palette. The earthy colour scheme has been absolutely nailed. The minimal colours, textures, and the lightness of the design within such a big, heavy space is so well thought out. The magnificent scullery is equally as good as the kitchen, which is a joy to see. The handle detail on the tall panels is beautiful. Perfect, smart, well executed spatial design. This is quality of design.” The 2023 Designer of the Year was awarded to Davinia Sutton of Detail by Davinia Sutton in Christchurch. Davinia also won the Supreme Bathroom Design Award for a project titled Coastal Luxury, located in Redcliff ’s Christchurch.

A master ensuite, Coastal Luxury, was designed as part of a new contemporary architectural home. The design needed to reflect the architectural style of the home with strong vertical and horizontal lines, natural stone and textures. The highest quality ﬁttings, attention to detail with the custom-made heated towel rails, careful use of lighting details and organic palette, further enhance the architectural modern context and sense of luxury. NKBA Judges praised Davinia’s supreme bathroom for being warm and inviting, exactly what a bathroom should be. “A stunning and conﬁdent play on architectural lines. A highly functional and smart design. The choice of lighting is very clever, and the designer has captured the natural light in a beautiful way.

The negative details are gorgeous, as are the bespoke, heated towel rails. Consistency within the metallics keeps the space calm.” Rachael Kwok, NKBA Executive Oﬃcer, said the awards celebrated many deserving designers. “A total of 18 designers from across Aotearoa were awarded NKBA Excellence in Design Awards. From the depths of Invercargill, up to the City of Sails, NKBA members represent the best designers of kitchens and bathrooms in the country. The EID awards are our opportunity to showcase their talent and celebrate their skills.” 

The materials’ whole of life cycle was considered from design process to execution to the end of its useful life, ensuring that timber was as sustainably sourced and manufactured as possible.

Flexible dust extraction supplier installs new filtration system without stopping customers production Kas Furniture, a busy manufacturing business in Auckland’s Avondale were delighted they didn’t even need to stop production when NZ DUCT + FLEX built a new dust filtration system working around the needs of joinery staff who carried on with their own work during the process! The system was fully operational the same week as the install. Steve Battersby from Kas Furniture contacted NZ DUCT+FLEX to quote for an upgrade to their dust extraction system which would match their growing business. In the manufacturing business for almost 30 years, the company manufactures a wide range of items for every room in the house, but focuses on kitchen cabinetry that ‘looks good, works well and lasts’. With the Kas Furniture company philosophy in mind, George Matusek from NZ DUCT + FLEX visited the site and recommended a 3 Bay Modular filter, bag emptying, driven by a JK30D 7.5kw fan. “The secret to long lasting dust removal, with minimal maintenance, is sizing up the filter, the fan, and the needs of the customer’s machinery correctly, at the start of the design process. It is the FILTER AREA, not only the fan power, that is key,” says George who visits joineries every week and sees systems purchased because the price was appealing, but that use large fans with smaller filters. “This is actually costing customers more later on in shutdowns due to blockages and filter socks needing replacing

as too much air is forced though them by the larger fan.” says George. The NZDUCT+FLEX approach offers not only value for money but results in less noise and less dust. As NZ DUCT+FLEX uses only its own permanent employees to install, the team are building dust solutions every day of every week, country wide. Responding quickly when the order was placed, especially as the filter unit is an ‘in stock’ item, they were in and out of the Avondale site in a week. All filtration products are purchased from Danish based JKF Industri and the filters, fans and rotary valves, as well as the LIPLOCK™ ducting system, are available from the company’s 3 Auckland warehouses, so if the installers needed items additionally to the original drawings, they could be supplied within the hour, (NZ wide supplied normally overnight). “NZ DUCT+FLEX have installed hundreds of these Danish designed Filters in New Zealand in the last 14 years and have never had a need to re-visit any joinery customers to clear a blockage in ducts, as the air flows are calculated correctly in the first place. All wood dust customers are in fact still operating on the original filter bags. Paying 10% more for a larger filter initially, but having no issues for 10 years, means they are actually ‘saving money’ confirms George. In a competitive dust extraction marketplace, the most common route to making a new ‘system quote’ look competitive is to use a smaller filter unit, to get the overall cost down, but make big claims about airflow capacity.

Unlike filter area, which is a stated figure, airflow capacity is a vague claim that can’t be directly measured or confirmed. Nav Sharma, the Installation Manager who has overseen filter installations for 10 years with the company, also re-visits these systems repeatedly, as part of the maintenance program offered by NZ DUCT+FLEX. “If you ask too small a filter unit to handle too much air and dust, instead of the dust cake forming gently on the surface of the filter material so it falls off again easily, it gets driven deep into the pile of the material and starts to clog. Once this happens it’s a downhill slope of poor filtration, lack of suction, dust in the work area and deposition (potential fire risk) in the ductwork. I regularly get called out to assess other installations where the system is no longer ‘sucking’” says Nav.

AUCKLAND / NORTHLAND We had a good turnout at our meeting in August and had positive signs of engagement and interest from the members talking about current topics, I would like to thank Blum for organizing a successful meeting. We acknowledge our regional award winners at our August meeting. Recognising and celebrating the achievements of companies and apprentices within our organization. It is an important way to motivate and inspire others. Manufacturing materials, such as Timber, paneling and hardware and specialised components, are now more readily available and can be sourced without significant difficulty. Navigating the Christmas Rush is what we all seem to be doing currently. The order books are all full before Christmas and leading into 2024. However, there is a slowdown in the amount of pricing which is an indicator of what may be around the corner. Looking forward to our next Master Joiners meeting at the end of November being hosted by Unique Hardware. allowing us to catch up with current news and the plan forward to attract apprentices to our industry, also see new hardware coming to the market. Not forgetting celebrating the end of the year with our members and suppliers. - Rob Pickup CANTERBURY Crazy time of year time again, most of us as per usual are under pressure to get what’s needed out the door prior to the xmas break, this year tho there are a few more businesses having a controlled run into xmas then we have been use to over the last few years, things have definitely slowed up a bit and looks like it will be that way for a couple of months into next year. Something else that’s noticeable for this time of year is that the supply of product has been steady and little to no delays, that is probably a mixture of lighter workload and learnings from previous years. Our local membership is still growing with another couple of members signed up, our monthly meetings continue to have a good representation with 20+ showing up.

For our September meeting we took a tour through the Acero factory, it was very informative and was good seeing industry product being made in NZ. Our next meeting will have our local annual apprenticeship awards follow on straight after, we will then have a break from our monthly meetings and back into it in February 2024. Awisa being cancelled this year was a real shame for the industry, has been to long since the last one and it’s a great opportunity for like minded people to get together and look at all the latest and greatest machines & hardware, hopefully they can get things sorted and bring it back in 2025, luckily we have an annual Master Joiners conference that brings us all together from all parts of NZ. In relation to finding staff, it’s still very challenging finding skilled staff but definitely a bit easier finding the lesser skilled ones, this problem isn’t going to go away unless something is done about it. Currently, the Master Joiners are working hard on ways to encourage / attract new talent to the industry. Sounds like a few places will be closing down for an extended xmas break, enjoy it, be safe and have a Merry Xmas.Yours sincerely, Nathan Moore CENTRAL I can just about hear the sleigh bells ringing. We are fast approaching the end of another year. I was invited along to a business seminar the other week by Talent Central. They asked me to talk about how we interact with the local schools and offer small group tours to the High School students. We talk to them about our business and the different opportunities that we can offer. The kids are pretty quiet to start off with. We find by the end of the tour there are a few students who are engaging with us and asking questions. Talk to your President about how you can engage with the younger generation in your region. Staff well being has been a huge factor in a lot of businesses this year. For some reason, sickness and other health issues has hit a few members hard this year. I know myself I have been struggling over the last few weeks to keep up with checking in on staff and seeing where they are

at, and what support we can offer them. We are a larger company and keeping up to date with the lives of all my staff is a job in itself. Make sure you remember to also take time for yourself and not run yourself into the ground. Central members are reporting that they should finish this year on a more calm note as the Christmas rush is not as hectic as it has been in previous years. I think it is what a lot of us needed. There is plenty of work to come back to in the New Year after spending time away and relaxing with families. - Kristine Holmes NELSON - MARLBOROUGH Many of our members have reported that the year has ended as it started, steady although it’s dependent on what part of the market you supply. The middle part of the market has certainly taken a hit. Commercial is still busy with many projects still to come. There is no clear vision on what next year will be like as many of our members don’t have extended order books like we have experienced in the last few years. We are finding our suppliers are able to supply without any long wait periods like we had last year so that’s a positive. Some members are noticing payments getting extended which may indicate cash flow issues for our customers, time will tell but it’s a timely reminder for us all to keep close to what’s outstanding and not to let it get out of hand. No one reported any staff shortages or difficulties finding suitable staff. Paul Rusbatch OTAGO / SOUTHLAND Wow – it’s only 7 weeks until Christmas!!! I hope you’re all doing OK with the Christmas rush that invariably visits at this time of year! Our region is still seeing it’s ups and downs in terms of forward work but current work loads are keeping everyone busy. Local councils have seen a slight increase in consents for residential builds and the housing market seems to be picking up a gear which is good news for us. Availability of skilled staff continues to be challenging however watch this space, Master Joiners have a plan to entice new blood to joinery!! Keep your eyes peeled for an email

regarding an internship programme. Kyle and I are currently working on the calendar for next year. We know there’ll be an AGM, mid year get together and conference in Canterbury in Spring. Now is a great time to let us know if there is anything in particular you’d like to see on the calendar for 2024. By the time this goes to print we would have had our local apprenticeship awards so a huge congratulations to all those apprentices. It’s fantastic to see new people coming into Joinery and making a career out of it. We would have also had our end of year get together at Arc Brewery in Evansdale. A massive thank you to Kyle for planning this for us. It’s always good to catch up with other industry colleagues, share the good the bad the ugly and know you’re never alone. A big thanks to Laminex, NZ Panels and Carters who contributed to our evening. We are hugely grateful for your ongoing support. Our Daiken Southland Ltd visit went well with good numbers and we were stoked to have some Waitaki members join us. It was very educational to witness the whole process from delivery of logs to the end, packaged MDF boards ready to be shipped. The hospitality, factory tour and information shared was next level. Did you know that Daiken Southland have less than 2 percentage wastage?! Look after yourselves leading up to Christmas and have a fabulous break. I hope Santa is good to you all. I look forward to seeing you all in the new year. Cheers. - Kate Rule-Munro TARANAKI Well, it’s that time of year again, to write another Report. This year has ﬂown past, and now it only six and bit weeks to Christmas. The winter weather is still hanging around, but the nights are getting lighter which is great to get outside after work, so roll on summer. It’s been a hard year with topsy turvy months and the most diﬃcult year I have had in 35 years of being in the trade. There has been so much uncertainty but hopefully with the change of government and a new direction, we can look forward to a bright 2024.

Most Taranaki joinery factories report that they have enough work, but are ﬁnding general enquires way down on what they usually are for this time of year. This is due to the down turn in the Taranaki region, the new house market slowing, the uncertainty of interest rates, and maybe some potential customers not having the spare cash to spend. Its reassuring to know its not just joinery, its most industries that are ﬁnding similar things. In Taranaki we rely on oil and gas, trucking and the dairy industry. There are challenges for us all. A number of joinery businesses are saying that as staff member resign they are not being replaced immediately, due the lack of forward work. It’s a wait and see approach. Even suppliers are seeing a downturn, but most suppliers have good stock levels so in general we are getting goods in a reasonable time frame. Looking forward to a break at Christmas time to spend time with family and friends, roll on the hot summer days. So have a great holiday, onward and upwards to 2024. Be kind and stay safe. - Bryan Frank WAIKATO / BOP Members continue to report steady workloads well into 2024. Some reports of quiet patches, but nothing that seems too concerning for most Members. Our latest meeting was held at Intawood Products and covered a wide range of topical issues followed by a tour of the factory. John and Lisa have an impressive and diverse business in their custom built premises located near the Hamilton Airport.

I recently attended an event held by our local Chapter of NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction). It is great to see the work being done to support women into the Trades. Our Apprentice Awards held at Onyx Restaurant in Cambridge was a great success. I was inspired by the quality of the recipients. The evening included a panel of current and past Joinery students who shared their Joinery journeys to date and fielded questions from the audience. We have some great talent coming through our industry for sure. Our year ends with a Golf Tournament followed by dinner at a local pub. Next year is looking to be full of interesting events and professional development for our Members and their Teams. Details will be posted on the Master Joiners website over the next few weeks. Take care over the holiday break and see you next year! - Cherie van der Poel WAITAKI Workload - All firms have reported in with all commenting that they have good current workloads and good forward work ahead of them for the rest of the year and well into next year, however a couple have noticed that the enquiries have slowed up slightly. Staff - All firms are happy with the staff levels they have, some say they could do with more, but all say that they will see what next year brings first. Material - No one has any issues with materials; however, most say you just need to be more organized and order earlier.

Finances - All is good in our region; every firm is reporting that their clients are all current and paying for their accounts. General -Waitaki still seems to be very busy, and all firms have plenty of forward work and pricing to do, next year looks busy for everyone in our region, hopefully interest rates come down and the new Government can make a difference, that will maybe ensure that we all stay busy. - Warren Atwill WELLINGTON Well, here I am back in the Wellington Master Joiners hotseat, our thanks to Grant Smith for keeping the ship steady while I was away… Grant has ‘stepped up’ into the 2nd Natonal Vice President’s Role and has already told me how busy it is in that role. This is a real testament to how well the Natonal office is going, I remember becoming the Natonal Vice President about 10 years ago and I just sat on a few commttees twiddling my thumbs, waiting for my turn to ‘change the world’ haha. Well done Grant stepping up the chain, Wellington is proud of you being selected onto the advisory and we all know you’ll make a big difference for the better. It was great to have the last Master Joiners conference in Wellington and at the new Wellington Conference Centre ‘Takina’, it was fantastic, I was saying to everyone there, probably more than once ... that ‘there is no substitute for space meaning ‘big is good’ and the space was good. The Wellington Branch of the Master Joiners is going really well, membership is steadily increasing,

surprisingly, a couple of members left and then quickly came back. We have a few new members come on in the new ‘Sole Practioner’ category, this is also a good example of how the National oﬃce is working hard identifying opportunites within the Master Joiners and initating them. One valuable saying the Master Joiners has is ‘don’t go it alone’ this is very relevant for someone in a ‘one man band’ situaton, but it’s also very valid for any Joinery of any size. Wellington have come through the many necessary changes all the other branches have recently been through, we also this year dissolved our Associaton status to become a true member under the Master Joiners umbrella. Wellington’s Associaton history started in 1955 as “The Wellington Provincial Guild of Master Joiners” they changed the name in 1959 to the “The Wellington Joinery Manufacturers Associaton” so we will be 70 Years old in 2025, this is a great milestone and worth celebrating, perhaps you would join us for that. Wellington Master Joiner members are all busy and all getting paid from what I hear, another saying for you, if you don’t get paid ‘then it was all for nothing’, make sure you get your deposits and progress payments, and don’t be afraid to ask for them. The couple of times I’ve been caught out is when I’ve been really busy and haven’t sorted the money properly. Its great to be back in the hot seat, have a great Christmas break and stay safe. - Anthony Neustroski 

Shanghai Big figures tell a story of success The 52nd edition of CIFF Shanghai, the International Furniture Fair in China, which takes place annually at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai Hongqiao), has just concluded. With the theme ‘Leading New Modes of Consumption, Serving New Patterns’, the Fair was divided into eight themed areas and hosted four side events covering life trends, office space and urban outdoors, bringing together the entire furniture industry under one roof over four days. The numbers that defined this edition of CIFF Shanghai speak for themselves: 1,500 exhibitors arranged across 340,000 square metres, attended by 93,474 trade visitors, 84,611 of whom came from China and 8,863 from abroad, representing an increase of 10.44% compared to the 2019 edition, already a record-setting year. In addition to all this, there were 46 live broadcasts on Chinese social channels followed by some 2.6 million online viewers. Between real and virtual, online and offline, the impact of this 52nd edition was truly impressive, especially on the domestic market. In times like these, when all certainties seem unmoored and almost nothing seems to go as it should, the Chinese domestic market—segmented between the wealth emerging among consumers with truly impressive economic capacity and a growing, increasingly demanding middle class—is proving to be a safe harbour for many companies in the sector. Thus, now more than ever, CIFF Shanghai has established itself as the indispensable platform for foreign companies interested in entering this complex market. Hosted in Shanghai, China's most international city, the September edition positioned CIFF as a bridge to the Chinese domestic market and an essential vehicle for meeting distributors and building a local customer base.


