Melbourne Tullamarine Airport
Travelling to the Australian Synchrotron
From Melbourne Airport
The most direct route from Tullamarine airport to the Australian Synchrotron is via the M2 and M1 freeways. We suggest allocating 3545 minutes’ travel time during off-peak traffic, and up to 90 minutes during peak-hour. The latter typically occurs between 07:00am to 10:00am and 03:00pm to 06:00pm.
For a real time, minute-by-minute summary Melbourne traffic conditions, we highly recommend consulting:
Google Maps: https://www.google.com.au/maps
Public transport is also available via Skybus, a multi-passenger coach, offering a transfer service from Tullamarine airport to Southern Cross railway station. Train services are then available between Southern Cross and Syndal and/or Clayton stations respectively, followed by a 10-15minute taxi or Uber transfer to the Australian Synchrotron.
Typically, this is a longer commute, and we recommend allowing 2-2.5hours to complete your journey if travelling by public transport. For further information, please consult the Skybus and Public Transport Victoria (PTV) websites:
The Australian Synchrotron precinct main entrance features an entry boom gate, and in addition, an after-hours sliding security gate. For personnel not in possession of a site access card, please select the intercom button (located on the yellow panel next to the driver-side window). This intercom will patch you through to our site security guard, who will verify your reason for entry. If the intercom does not connect successfully, Security can be contacted via telephone:
Security Phone: 03 8540 4120
For personnel in possession of an existing site access card, please touch your card to the card access sensor, located on the same panel as the intercom. This will open the sliding gate (after-hours) and raise the boom gate. No card access is required when exiting the facility.
Parking Information
Our main visitor car park is situated directly to the left, as you enter the facility. This carpark is also fitted with four EV charging stations (available for use by all personnel with an EV). Dedicated wheelchair accessible and motorcycle parking spaces are also located within this parking bay.
Staying at the Australian Synchrotron Guesthouse? The guesthouse also features a small 10-vehicle carpark, which can be accessed via the ring-road by driving in a counter-clockwise direction.

Procedures to Follow Upon Arrival at the Australian Synchrotron
User Access Card
If you are a new user or your access card has expired, you will need to visit the User Office to have your access card issued or updated. This service is available Monday to Friday from 8.30am-4.30pm. Whilst onsite, you must keep your access card with you at all times.
Upon completion of your beamtime, keep your access card for future visits to the Australian Synchrotron. Your card will be re-activated for each of your subsequent experiments in the 2-year period following the completion of the safety induction. If you have lost your card, please notify the User Office immediately and a replacement card will be issued.
Beamline Induction
In addition to your site safety induction, you will need to complete a beamline induction that provides safety information pertinent to the particular beamline on which you have been allocated time. Each beamline has its own specific induction and the time required to complete this may vary.
Please contact your dedicated beamline scientist for specific beamline induction start times for your experiment
User Satisfaction Survey
During your experiment or shortly after completion, please fill in our User satisfaction survey. The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete and can be anonymous. The survey is located on the Australian Synchrotron website: http://survey.synchrotron.org.au/
We appreciate your feedback.
