O
n my first trip to Burning Man, I had the time of my life! First, let me explain that the art festival has
taken place annually since 1991 on a high desert dry alkaline lake bed known as a playa in the temporary city of Black Rock City, Nevada, about 100 miles northeast of Reno. It is a week-long large-scale desert event focused on “community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance”. The event’s name comes from its culminating ceremony: the symbolic burning of a large wooden effigy, referred to as the Man, which occurs on the penultimate night, the Saturday evening before Labor Day.
