FACES OF 2018
THE FACE OF
BAR-B-Q The Original Golden Rule. Bar-B-Q, cigarettes and car repairs were the staples when Golden Rule Bar-B-Q opened in 1891. The original building was a roadside stop for travelers making the journey to Atlanta. In the 1930s, Jabo Stone purchased Golden Rule and in 1969 asked Michael Matsos, of Michael’s Sirloin Room, to take over the establishment. Matsos started to work on expanding the menu and employing people who would eventually become family to Golden Rule and the Matsos family. The famous Bar-B-Q is only part of the restaurants legacy. The true legacy is the people associated with Golden Rule. Michael “Booker” (35 years) is the always smiling pit master. Sammy Derzis (35 years) and Shannon Sankey (26 years) manage the restaurant. Others with life-long careers at the restaurant include: Peggy Martin (42 years), Rose Cammack (33 years), Willie Morgan (retired after 27 years), Walter Threat (25 years),in loving memeory of Bernice Kelly (66 years) Poncho Simms (40 years) and so many more. Without these people, Golden Rule wouldn’t be the establishment that Birmingham knows and loves today. The Golden Rule family is just as important to the Matsos family as the legendary Bar-B-Q.
