Letter from the Dallacite Team This has been a year of searching for ways to keep in touch and continue our mission despite being unable to meet face-to-face. The League has taken this challenge in stride by conducting all meetings virtually and allowing members to view meeting replays as they find convenient. The League plans to continue this virtual access in some fashion moving forward, which will help members juggle their home life, work life and League life. We applaud the League for the steps it has taken to keep us all connected and active in the Dallas community.

The forethought that went into the League’s plans for this year is impressive.

Before COVID-19 struck, the League planned to complete a long-awaited renovation of Headquarters before our Centennial celebration. The goals of this project were to create a welcoming and inclusive space for all while preserving our 100 years of history. Continuing our education and conversation about Diversity and Inclusion (D&I), the League scheduled several speakers prior to the national protests against racial injustice. In the fall, members voted and approved to add a new Vice President position on the

Diane Scovell Diane Scovell has been a dedicated Junior League of Dallas member for more than 40 years, serving in an abundance of roles including Ball Chair, Research & Development Chair, Project Chair, Endowment Committee, Sustaining Advisor and many others. She is known by her many JLD peers for mentoring and inspiring them to serve the community and for working with organizations that are meaningful to them.

Diane has distinguished herself through her work on an array of community endeavors including co-chairing the Dallas Mayor’s Task Force on Race Relations. Her current civic initiatives include The Laura Bush Institute for Women, Texas Trees Foundation (which she founded), Crystal Charity Ball, Goodwill Industries of Dallas, The Senior Source, Children’s Medical Center Foundation, Friends of Fair Park, Dallas Summer Musicals, UT Southwestern Circle of Friends and the Scovell Scholarship Foundation.

Milestones Luncheon

For the first time in League history, we held our Milestones Luncheon virtually in late March 2021. Active Erin Pope and Sustainer Candace Winslow co-chaired the 10th anniversary of the annual event, which featured world champion gymnast Simone Biles as our special guest. We also recognized 2021 Sustainer of the Year Diane Scovell for her incredible work in the community and nearly 100 Milestone Members for serving as “true milestones” in the lives of other JLD members. The event raised more than $450,000 for the Junior League of Dallas.

The Junior League of Dallas has long been committed to promoting Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) initiatives inside and outside the League.

Externally, JLD has a strong focus on diverse Community Placements and provides dedicated volunteers to our community partners. In return, JLD members are exposed to rich experiences and diverse groups of people.

The League initiated the D&I Committee during the 2009 - 2010 year to define what diversity and inclusion means to the League and to set goals for reaching new members.

“The primary goal of the D&I Committee was to make the League a welcoming and inclusive place for all women interested in voluntarism to bring their authentic selves,” said Sustainer Katy Spicer, who served as the first Diversity and Inclusion Chair. “While the New Member Committee at the time was focused externally on recruiting members that reflected the diversity of the Dallas community, D&I was focused internally on retaining those members through education, communication and internal

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN (KITK ) In partnership with UnitedHealthcare (UHC) and local after-school programs, the League launched the KITK program, an Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) initiative, to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and reverse the trend of childhood obesity.

Funding for the 2020 - 2021 year totaled $70,000 (with $30,000 provided

by UHC) and included 10 agencies at 43 sites, ultimately serving 740 students in grades K-5. To adapt to a virtual environment, KITK focused on offering programming that could be done at an agency or at home with minimal supplies and materials.

In July 2020, the Junior League of Dallas broke ground on a $2.1 million renovation of our Headquarters building. This project started with a need to preserve and honor our 100 years of service to the Dallas community by establishing an official Archive room to house and protect our history. As the project progressed, we realized that not only do we have a lot of history to preserve but our Headquarters needed to reflect the organization we are today.

T H E TO UR The wide sloping ramps leading to the front doors are the first thing visitors notice at the renovated Headquarters building. The classic “L”-shaped door handles remain in place, showing the Board’s desire to preserve the character of the building and be financially responsible with the Building Endowment funds.

Inside, a new ice-gray reception desk sits to the right of the entrance. Blackframed windowed offices stretch down the hall to the left. Across from the entry, the twin staircases now feature glossy black metal railing. Three halo light fixtures with teardrop LEDs stand out against the balcony and skylights, while the glazed brick floors remain as-is below. Seating areas with cozy armchairs flank the aisle leading to the large meeting room; signage celebrating JLD donors is on the right.

To the right of the meeting room are two glass-front phone rooms for taking calls in private. Beyond this lies a co-working lounge furnished with a banquette and seating area, plush couches and tables. This room is intended for small meetings, member workspace and social gatherings. Adjacent to the coworking lounge is a temperature and humidity-controlled archives room where 100 years of documents will be stored in a preservation-friendly space.

The pantry sits to the left of the meeting room and includes ice and water dispensers, a refrigerator, deep cabinets for storage, two microwaves, two warming drawers and the existing pass-through window to the meeting room.

Located behind the reception desk, the board room features a substantial conference table, bronze and glass shelves for display and a floor-to-ceiling navy velvet bench as a centerpiece. Blue-gray draperies, a paneled ceiling with LED lights and fresh carpet make the room feel light, bright and ready for business.

The front offices kept their original footprint, but are updated with new carpeting and cabinets. All restrooms are now ADA-compliant. The first floor now includes a wellness room for member needs. The second floor houses new glass-walled offices and three sun-filled nooks where desks await those needing a quiet workspace. The quilts, which were used to raise money for the original 1984 Headquarters construction, will be mounted in acrylic and hung upstairs to honor those who made the original building possible.

The Juliette Fowler volunteers gathered virtually in October for a showcase and happy hour to view the residents’ artwork. This spring, they created a collaborative outdoor art installation. Fowler residents decorated flowerpots and JLD volunteers planted flowers and painted an outdoor mural on campus.

Like many, our Juliette Fowler volunteers are eager to return to normal. “The residents get so excited when we come. Even though they are in memory care they recognize us and know we are there to teach art.”

Through the challenge of the pandemic, JLD members have shown resilience, creativity and compassion in fulfilling their roles both within the League and in the community.

These personal traits and her resulting legacy are aligned in so many ways to the Junior League’s mission of developing the potential of women, improving the community and supporting a commitment to the values of diversity and inclusion. Craft exemplifies the type of transformational leadership each

In 2016, the Junior League Centennial Committee began scouting for a special project to mark this milestone and inspire all Dallasites for generations. Our leaders sought a project that would have a lasting, positive impact on our city; serve all in our community; align with the Junior League’s mission; and improve Dallas for the next century. Active research started in 2018, and after visiting numerous potential projects and conducting countless interviews over a twoyear period, the centennial committee unanimously chose the restoration of the Juanita J. Craft House and Museum.

The Junior League’s two-pronged centennial gift will cover both remaining restoration costs and new educational programming for adults, develop public school curriculum, and establish ongoing partnerships with the African American Museum, Fair Park and the Friends of Juanita Craft. Because the

project is in the planning phase, we will continue to monitor construction estimates and curriculum expenses to determine the final donation amount. The project will be completed in March 2022.

In addition, we are working closely with the city to secure the home’s designation as a historical landmark on the Civil Rights Trail, which would be the first in the state of Texas.

As we approach our centennial anniversary, the Junior League of Dallas is honored and excited to celebrate Juanita Craft. She exemplifies our centennial theme: “the Junior League of Dallas, Legacy of Leadership, Devotion to Dallas for 100 years.”
