SPARKS FROM THE WORD by RABBI MYER S. KRIPKE Parashat Ha’azinu We are approaching the end of the Five Books of Torah and the New Year has just made an entrance. As we have noticed many times before, Biblical poetry is powerful and thunderous. At the very beginning of this week’s Sidra, the poet calls for the attention of heaven and earth -- so that what is about to be said will remain forever. And yet -- the poet says that his words will be as gentle as the dew in the grasses. Is there corruption in the world? There is indeed, but it is not with the Lord, only with fickle mankind. Is this something you want to know? Ask your father? And your elders many be asked. They will tell you of times long passed. When the Lord distributed the lands of the earth to various nations, to his beloved Israel, He gave the land now called Israel. And so the poet says, You O Israelites: you have grown fat from your accomplishments. You have grown self-satisfied, and not remembering that the Lord has brought you here, you have rejected Him. You have gone after other gods whom your ancestors did not know. The great Rock which is your Father, you have pushed aside. Can you forget the God Who created you? Can you see your God in your eye and reject Him? The Lord now says, “I will hide My Face from them. What can be their future and their end? For they are a rebellious generation. They are children who have no faith. They gave Me away for something of no value; they have angered Me with their vanities, therefore I will give them away, for they are no nation.” These powerful verses, condemning the House of Israel for its lack of faith, go on at length to describe the failures of the Israelites: Now I will tell you, O Israelites, I vow that I am forever and the truths I speak will last through all time. I have unleashed my award as thought it were lightning and My Hand will hold onto justice. I will return vengeance on My enemies and will repay those who have spurned Me. My sword will pierce flesh and the blood will freely flow. In the end, He will see to it that the blood of His servants will rise without limit. He will avenge Himself on His enemies and He will atone for His land and His people. Indeed ... I urge the reader to review these mighty lines on his own, especially as this Sidra is read on the Shabbat before Kol Nidre. I have only done a loose translation for your convenience.
