Enrichment Classes for Adults “How Can I Get into Prayer?” Davenen for the Perplexed Instructor: Cantor Shoshana Brown Jewish prayer as we find it in the siddur (prayer book) comes from a place and from people, “long ago and far away.” How can we be expected to relate to its language, images, and concerns? And yet, without entrée into Jewish prayer, how can we truly experience the essence of Jewish spiritual life? In this class, Cantor Shoshana Brown will provide a setting for safe and honest discussion of our difficulties in engaging in prayer; together we will wrestle and experiment with strategies for overcoming some of the most common roadblocks to davenen as a Jew. We will deal with the issues of language (Hebrew vs. English), imagery, and sexism, and especially how to reach that place where connection begins to happen. We will examine how to utilize melody to engage the heart and learn about the use of niggunim and “davenen through the four worlds” (a legacy from Hasidism). This class is appropriate for both beginning and experienced daveners, for those with little Hebrew background to those who are fluent, for those who love and for those who hate Jewish prayer – and for the perplexed! Ski & Snowboard Training Winter is coming! And with it, snow, ice, and the call of pristine slopes. However, even if you’re an experienced skier or snowboarder, the start of the season can be something of a shock to your body. To ease the transition and get you ready to shred your first day on the slopes, J-Fitness is offering an eight-week, small group conditioning program designed for skiers and snowboarders. Conditioning is especially important so you can make the most of your time on the slopes and reduce fatigue, which is a leading cause of injury according to the American College of Sports Medicine and the U.S. Ski and Snowboarding Association. With a maximum of six people per class, each participant will have a progressive workout plan tailored to his or her goals and background by our experienced training staff. Golf Conditioning Club J-Fitness’ new Golf Conditioning Club wants to help you improve your swing. We can’t fix your slice, but through weekly Club workouts with a trainer and personalized sport-specific exercise programs, we can help maximize your potential. You’ll build power off the tee, balance, and coordination for your short game as well as flexibility and stamina to avoid injury. The last is especially important because the explosive, one-directional nature of a golf swing leads to muscular imbalance and strain that harms your game and can keep you from it. By joining the Golf Conditioning Club, you’ll not only be able to play every chance you get, you’ll improve your performance on the course. Coming to the Dwares JCC March 2015! The Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy offers a learn-to-swim program for children of all ages. Started in 2005 by four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Lenny Krayzelburg, "our core purpose is to teach and inspire children to be water safe." Since its inception, the Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy has taught thousands of children water safety and the importance of knowing how to swim. Using the SwimRight Method, the program utilizes the swim-float-swim technique as its foundation, and focuses on providing children with the knowledge and confidence needed in and around the water. From these basic skills we take students from beginning stages of swimming all the way to learning all 4 strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. For more information about the Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy contact London Blake at 401.421.4111 ext. 153 or lblake@jewishallianceri.org.
Here's what people at other JCCs are saying: "The LK Swim School has been terrific. I have three kids enrolled of different ages and abilities. All three are taught appropriately. The instruction is strict but very kind. My youngest was three years old when he passed his survival test. I don't ever worry about being around water with my kids, they can SWIM!" —Hilary G. "Lenny Krayzelburg Swim School ROCKS! My son has excelled in just two lessons. He loves it and I'm so happy he will be watersafe." —Madalyn
