Jeff Lillien was born and raised in Chicago, surrounded by diverse communities that shaped his early perspective. Growing up in a first-generation American family, he was encouraged to explore academic interests and stay informed about the world. His aptitude for mathematics was evident early on and was matched by a deep curiosity about government, economics, and current events. These early influences led him to pursue a degree in Economics, combining his analytical strengths with a growing interest in how societies and financial systems function. Jeffrey began his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was mentored by a professor who influenced his approach to institutional systems and public policy. MIT also fostered his appreciation for applied mathematics and technology as tools for solving real-world problems. While there, he lived in La Maison Française, a residential program that helped him become fluent in French. He later earned a translator’s certificate in commercial French from the Paris Chamber of Commerce. Continuing his education, he enrolled at New York University School of Law, where he became a member of the Law Review and was eventually elected as an editor. He concluded his legal studies as a visiting student at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, gaining further insight into the legal dimensions of commerce and regulation. Motivated by family experiences with legal and financial barriers, Jeffrey Lillien entered the legal profession to contribute to structural improvements. His legal career began at Mayer Brown in Chicago, focusing on lending and securities law. Over time, he became involved in the design of financial products, complex transactions, and the legal infrastructure supporting them. He has worked extensively in Chicago and New York City, helping bridge the gap between established financial systems and evolving technologies.
