DIVISION OF THE HIKING- & MOUNTAIN TRAILS INTO LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY EASY HIKING TRAILS

...are relatively easy hiking - & mountain trails that can be narrow and steep. There are no direct passages at risk of falling.

MODERATE MOUNTAIN TRAILS

...are mostly narrow, often steep and can have passages at risk of falling. In addition, short insured walking passages (e.g., wire rope) can occur.

DIFFICULT MOUNTAIN TRAILS

...are narrow, often steep and have passages at risk of falling. There are parts of assured walking passages and/or simple climbing spots that require the use of the hands. Surefootedness and head for heights are essential.

4

10 TIPS • Only fit in the mountains and not „fit through the mountains“. • No mountain hike without careful tour planning. • Take the right equipment for the planned tour and nothing unnecessary. • Obtain information about the tour and the weather conditions. • Take a ten-minute rest every two hours. • Drink and eat plenty during the tour. • Never leave the signposted trail! • Stop the tour early in case of danger or weather deterioration. • An emergency kit (first aid box, bivouac sack, torch, mobile phone) belongs in every rucksack. • In case of emergency, stay calm and call the mountain rescue service (Alpine emergency call 140).

5

PROTECTED ALPINE PLANTS Enjoy the wonderful plant diversity in our Alpine nature, but please adhere strictly to the legal regulations on the protection of native flora. It is also your responsibility to ensure that no plant species is wiped out and lost for future generations.

Also protected are: Yellow and black rue, blue and yellow marsh iris, dwarf alpine rose, stemless and glossy primrose, Baldo anemone, dragon‘s head, true spike and all alpine cushion and rosette plants. No more than five pieces may be picked of, among others: Lily of the valley, large snowdrop or spring knotweed, all columbine species, stone anemone, platenigl, dwarf primrose and flour primrose, blue speck, cyclamen or cyclamen, white and yellow alpine anemone and narcissus anemone, all long-stemmed gentians, large-flowered and yellow foxglove. You may pick a hand bouquet at the most of: Stonecrop, spring cowslip, centaury, short-stemmed blue-flowered gentian and alpine aster. Provided that no damage is caused to the tree by cutting branches, it is permitted to take a hand bunch of Swiss stone pine branches. 6

WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY

• Protect the injured from falling rocks, falls, avalanches, etc. • First aid (breathing, circulation, haemostasis, splinting etc.) • Protect the injured from weather conditions (wind, rain, sun, etc.). • Never leave the injured person alone. Continuous encouragement and support are essential for survival. Alpine emergency signal: Repeat a visual or acoustic signal at regular intervals of six times a minute - then pause for 1 minute - until a response is detected. If it is not possible to call for help from the site of the accident: the caller descends to get help - but never leave the injured person alone! If possible, do not descend alone. Give the caller the following information in writing: Exact location of accident, type of injury, number of injured and uninjured group members. Leave warm clothing, rain gear and food that is not needed with the injured person.

From See to the Vorarlberg border, you can hike the entire Paznaun area via the valley trail. The trail could not be more varied, alternating between gravelled forest paths, asphalt side roads and sections with fine forest soil. At times the trail leads directly along the Trisanna River at the bottom of the valley, at other times it leads along the sunny slopes of the valley with a view. The valley trail serves as a connection between the individual villages, but can also be tackled as an independent tour. In total, the entire route covers more than 30 km and almost 1,000 m of altitude.

Starting from the village square in Galtür, you take the path in the direction of the Jamtal valley and reach the Menta Alm, which is steeper at first and then flat. Here you already have a unique view of the Jamtal glacier at the beginning of the valley entrance. With the Menta Alm and the Scheiben Alm, this hike offers two cosy places to stop for a break. There is also the opportunity to taste Paznaun specialities. Especially at the end of June / beginning of July, the blossoming alpine roses form an additional impressive hiking backdrop.

Starting from the village square in Galtür, either follow the lakeside path along the Vermuntbach stream or hike along the valley hiking trail to Wirl. From there, follow the old Zeinisjoch road past the Klein Zeinis house until you reach the Zeinisjoch pass. This is not only the border between Tyrol and Vorarlberg, but also the watershed between the Rhine and Danube. The last stretch takes you along a mountain lake to the Alpengasthof Zeinisjoch. At this refreshment stop, you have a wonderful view of the Kops reservoir with its dam wall and an impressive panoramic view of the Alps with the local mountain of the Montafon, the Valülla (2,813m).

From the Galtür village square, walk past the soccer ground to the lakeside path. Cross the bridge and walk a short distance out of the valley to the signpost pointing to Sonnenkogel. From here the hike follows narrow meadow paths to the Sonnenkogel, which promises a wonderful view southwards into the Jamtal valley - with the Jamtal glacier, as well as the Hintere (3,156 m) and Vordere Jamspitze (3,178 m) peaks. In the southwest, impressive mountain giants like the Ballunspitze (2,671 m), the Valülla (2,813 m) or the Gorfenspitze (2,558 m) appear above Galtür.

The district of Tschaffein is reached from the village square of Galtür either via the riverside path along the Trisanna or the Maasweg on the opposite side. At the Trisanna house you cross the bridge, after which the hike runs pleasantly along the road to the Stafali junction. The Stafali Weiher is beautifully situated in the middle of the forest and invites you to linger with cosy barbecue areas. From there you will reach the Lareintal turn-off in about ½ hour, which will eventually lead you to the Larein Alpe. The Larein Alpe, a very nice and cosy stop for refreshments, also offers you the opportunity to taste and then buy delicacies from the Paznaun, such as milk, cheese and butter. The second option: hike in the direction of Mathon, past the sawmill on the right uphill through the forest to the Larein Alpe and back via Stafali Weiher.

Here you already have a beautiful view of the valley as far as Kappl. Afterwards it becomes noticeably steeper and especially the last quarter of the route requires surefootedness on scree. The scenic mountain tour to the 2,645 metre high Predigberg offers tremendous views of the surrounding Silvretta peaks, the Jam and Larein valleys. The Bergli with its azure mountain lake can be reached via the road or a steep footpath and is - rightly - a popular hiking destination and photo motif. The way back is via the Larein valley. Here there is an abundance of photo motifs such as the view of the Schnapfenspitze with the impressive Larein glacier. The Larein Alpe is a managed alp where you can taste typical Paznaun specialities.
