Rockchapel Tea Party

The annual American Tea Party was held at Rockchapel Community Centre on October 20th. Billy O’Brien provided music and entertainment for the evening. All proceeds from the Tea Party assist in the upkeep of the community centre in Rockchapel. Thanks to the support and presence of local community members for taking the time to be there.

Millstreet Active Retired are living up to their name! The last few weeks have included a talk by Solicitor Lily Nagle as well as a line dancing class (pictured left) where a whopping 3000 steps were racked up!

The group had a very informative talk by local solicitor Lily Nagle on wills, transfer, inheritance, capital gains tax, fair deal, power of attorney and much more. Other talks included Mairead from new leaf health discussing health, and social workers from HSE with a very interesting talk on assisted decision making law, domestic violence, planning ahead and more items to the age group.

Rathmore Pay Homage Rathmore GAA Club

celebrated a very special anniversary. It is now 60 years since Rathmore won the O’Donoghue Cup for the very first time. A 60th anniversary mass to honour the team was held in the St Joseph’s church. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Pat O’Donnell and people gathered for refreshments afterwards in Rathbeg. Kiskeam Men’s Shed Takes Off The first meeting for Kiskeam’s Men’s shed went over a treat! The newly formed Dromtariffe drama group cast will be performing a play next spring with rehearsals starting before the end of November. The Drama group will be meeting Thursday nights. Liscarroll N.S. School Fundraiser A ‘Wonder-Furl’ Success

Many thanks to all who supported the Liscarroll Fundraiser in the Charleville Show grounds on Sunday 5th November. Despite some showers later in the morning, it was a great success. €4500 was raised from the event, and this will go towards fencing, groundworks, and tarmac in the backyard around the hurling wall and creating a small playing area to the side of the yard. Many thanks to all the staff and the Parents Association who helped out on the day and sponsored prizes. Thanks also to those who helped out with parking. Special thanks were extended to John Bradley, a past parent of our school. This was his third year organising this event with the help of some friends, especially Tom Griffin. The work that is done by John and co. for this event is commendable and we are very grateful.

LEADER 2023-2027 LDS Evaluation Update

The Department of Rural and Community Development is taking longer than anticipated in evaluating the Local Development Strategies nationally. It was hoped that IRD Duhallow would have a contract for the next programme as an Independent LAG by now but this hasn’t been the case. The DRAFT Leader rules have been published. If any Communities, Individuals, and Businesses want to discuss their project ideas or ask any questions, please feel free to contact a member of staff at IRD Duhallow on 029 60633.

Kanturk District Updates

Person Of The Year

Only a few days left in this years person of the month awards! November and December winners will be chosen out of this month's nominations. The final day of nominating is November 20th. The winners will be in with a chance to win the person of the year award which will be voted on by the public and presented with the award at the Gala night on January 5th in the Edel Quinn hall. On the night, the MC will be Timmy Lynch and music by Sheila Fitzgerald. Nominations forms are available in various locations in Kanturk.

Events

Kanturk and District Community Council face into an extremely busy time in the next few weeks awards, Penny Dinners Christmas appeal, Remembrance tree ribbons, Stephens Day 5k walk, and The Gala night to organise. There is also great work continuing in the hall with electrical upgrading ongoing with more work in the pipeline. The fundraising events go straight back into the halls etc to bring them to the highest possible standard for the people of Kanturk and surrounding areas. Thanks for your support in the past and continued support.

To my mother and father, My parents were one of a kind. My father, Denis ‘Dinny’ O’Sullivan came from the Coalpits in Cullen. He loved dancing, a delicious pint, and cigarette. He was also a massive supporter of Kerry football. My mother, Nora O’Sullivan, (nee Dineen) came from the Old Chapel in Rathmore. She loved dancing too, dancing at weddings and parties. If the Kerry footballers had a victory, she’d definitely be dancing! I miss you both every day. So too do your sons and my brothers - Willy, PJ, Cormac, Timmy, John, and your daughters and my sisters, Eileen and Eilish. Eilish was fantastic with the love and care she gave them. Gone from this world, into the next, you will always remain in our hearts. Your loving son, Denis O’Sullivan JR.

Áit Aoibheann Official Opening

The sun was shining on Friday October 27th for the very special occasion of the official opening of Áit Aoibheann sensory garden, located on the grounds of Duhallow Primary Healthcare Centre in Newmarket. Fr Francis Manning blessed the garden and performed the official opening with an inspiring reflection. The garden features a beautiful wall mural which was a collaborative project of poetry and art with local artists Mike Guerin and Brid Moynahan, with Brid as

the artistic director of the project. Local poets John P Blake and John Thade Curtin also kindly agreed to use this special space to display their work and local stonework mason John O’Keeffe sourced exquisite granite, and in discussion with Brid provided two outstanding displays for their poetry. The Duhallow Business Awards are a priority in our calendars each year, as they offer a special opportunity to showcase the wonderful variety of top-class businesses that we have in the region. This year’s supplement is a testament to that,

We had an unprecedented 274 nominations, which was the largest number of entries ever received for our business awards and we look forward to seeing who will take on from the list of illustrious previous overall winners including last year’s winner, Irish Roll Forming, and be awarded the Best Duhallow Business of 2023. I want to most sincerely thank all the sponsors who came back on board again this year: AIB, Bank of Ireland, Duhallow Skillnet, Kanturk Mart, Kanturk Printers, McCarthy Insurance Group and SE Systems. Without their support nights like this would just not be possible. Since its inception, supporting local businesses and employment has been a key priority for IRD Duhallow and we offer a suite of soft, and capital supports for local

employers through LEADER, SICAP and our Local employment Service. We also undertake considerable work in the talent agenda, training, and upskilling those who have been distanced from the labour market through our many programmes for carers, those with disabilities, our Job Centre, Community Employment and Tús. We also provide a wide range of Skills training for the region’s current workforce through Skillnet support for the staff of the region’s businesses. We are delighted to have Alan Shortt, who hails from Duhallow, as our Master of Ceremonies for this year’s event, and we are looking forward to a great night’s entertainment. This year we welcomed a new category – Best Food Related Business and this was an extremely popular new addition, evidence of how important food businesses are to rural areas such as Duhallow. I think it’s fair to say that the publicity that each participant receives is one of the real prizes and I want to thank our team of Caleb, Tadhg, and Brendon who work on Discover Duhallow under the guidance of Louise Bourke and Eileen Linehan, for putting together this wonderful supplement. We are increasing the print run to ensure demand is me once again. I must also acknowledge the trojan work of our local photographer Sheila Fitzgerald for all the images within. Laura Curtin of Platinum Solutions and Shane Lynes of Lyne Media have done a fantastic job of keeping the business awards on the top of everyone’s social media feed and I’m looking forward to seeing their videos, featuring each of the shortlisted finalists which will be

broadcast on the night. This year’s IRD Duhallow Business Awards Ceremony is once again a sold-out event. The team at Duhallow Community Food Services and IRD Duhallow under the steady hands of Monica Gilmore, Linda O’Connor and Marie Fleming have pulled out all the stops to create a super banquet menu with as much local produce as possible. So, if you have not already booked and secured your ticket for the 23rd of November, you can keep up with the announcements of winners by tuning in online to our social media channels as there will be regular updates provided. The event itself presents a great opportunity to build further business connections, identify opportunities and synergies and increase business sales. Today, most of us have a Credit Union account, but the movement didn’t arrive in Ireland until 1958. In 1963, Seamus O’Mahoney, Michael Lucey, Donal Hanrahan,

and Tommy Cross formed a plan. RTE had run shows about credit unions setting up in towns and communities, and they had what was described as “an enthusiastic chat.” The first official meeting of Kanturk Credit Union was held at the Edel Quinn Hall on the 16th October 1963. The standard was set early. Today they offer more services than ever before; car, personal, and home loans, as well as loans for making homes greener. Their annual art competition is a huge hit every year, but their work with the community is not limited to this. They celebrated their 60th anniversary this year with a wonderful party, and are more than happy to celebrate the history of Kanturk. Regularly they share historical photos from the area, and their social media presence has given yet another point of contact for their community endeavours. While the primary customers are Kiskeam residents, there are members from all over Duhallow. There are no restrictions teenager to senior, beginner to advanced. What matters is serving community need. The Gym relies on volunteers for operating and maintaining the

facility, and they continually seek feedback from members. They aim to make the gym even more accessible, including to those who have disabilities. This is very possible with grants and fundraising, and their hope for educational programmes and social events will tie in with this. The team of 5 keep kids entertained and enriched during wedding days, and they are in demand, often covering 7 weddings a week! Their most popular plan is the 24 hour care and entertainment package, and their offerings go up to 48 hours! They also cater for bridal parties and wedding guests’ children. During these shifts, they keep kids comfortable and relaxed. They keep an eye to feeding, naps, nappies, and everything in between. And with Auntie Katie, there’s no such thing as boredom! efficiency while safe guarding legitimate regulatory objectives”. Definitely something worth leaving to the pros! The face of Finnow, Conor Sheahan He invested in embryos and now his Wagyu steak and burgers sell all over Ireland. He has altered their traditional care; instead of grain, the animals are grass fed for 4 years, and then swapped to a custom locally milled, high protein and energy based feed. However, he did keep the tradition of massaging the animal - this part of their care is vital to their comfort and happiness. It’s all a local affair; his farm is outside Millstreet, the animals are processed at an abattoir in Cork, and they are packed and stored locally, and the business is just the Sheahan family. Currently, they’re converting to organic, with the aim to be fully organic by 2024. As a member of the Irish Organic

Association, they are passionate about high standards of animal welfare and value sustainability and chemical free farming practices. They hope to plant a native Irish forestry and continue efforts for bogland preservation. Finnow Farm have dedicated almost 15 years to perfecting their product, ensuring quality breeding, quality genetics, and a quality Irish product for the global market.

I can’t stop, I’m flying thinking is due to actual demands and how much is due to having a fear of missing out, a need to always be chasing something else? One possible reason for this culture of urgency is the availability of information from social media; we are never off-line so we can very easily see the adventures that await us and feel that we need to be striving towards them instead of being present in the moment. Life can seem very urgent when we think like this, causing us to rush though the everyday activities as we feel we will eventually arrive at our desired adventure. The downfall of this way of living is that we don’t see the joy in the ordinary or the fun in the everyday interactions if we are rushing

through the ordinary to get to the extra-ordinary. The extra-ordinary that we may not even recognise as we are already thinking about the next thing. So, what’s the solution? The obvious answer is to slow down, to enjoy the moment. Take a breath, ground yourself in the presenttake in the sights and sounds around you. Try to enjoy the interactions you are having. Try to remember not to be afraid to slow down- go with the slow, you might even enjoy it.

Our ancestors added seaweeds and algae to foods for many different benefits, including to help maintain metabolism, breakdown catarrh, increase antioxidants and to support healthy skin function. Here are a few of my favourites. Sea Moss is a small sea algae which grows abundantly on the rocky shores of Ireland. It got its name when it was made famous during the potato famine in Ireland in the 1800s because people were starving and desperate for food, they began eating the red algae that was on the rocks as it was so nutritious. Wakame is a type of edible seaweed that has been cultivated in Japan and Korea for centuries. Even in small amounts, it can

help boost your intake of minerals like iodine, manganese, folate, magnesium, and calcium and fucoxanthin, which is a brown seaweed carotenoid that is essential to health. Wakame is low in calories and can contribute to weight control. Norwegian kelp is another amazing sea vegetable that is rich in organic iodine, fucoidans, alginates, fucoxanthins and laminarins. It contains many different traces of minerals that people in the Western World often lack. All these edible seaweeds are an excellent source of fibre, calcium, potassium, iron, and iodine. Depending on the variety, they can also be a valuable source of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, B, C, E, K, copper, zinc, manganese, magnesium, and selenium. Norwegian seaweed also contains pantothenic acid and riboflavin,

which are needed to produce sufficient energy in stressful situationsl. Spirulina is a naturally-rich source of protein, which supports the maintenance of muscle mass, is cholesterol free and bursting with more green goodness than you might think. Nutrients include calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, and iron, as well as high antioxidant levels. Spirulina can be mixed with water, juices, smoothies, protein drinks and added to porridge or yogurt. What species should I plant?

Whitethorn (Hawthorn) is the classic hedgerow species! But it is better for biodiversity if you can plant a mix of species. Other suitable species include Blackthorn, Hazel, Holly and Dog Rose. These should be planted at a density of 5/m2, coppiced to one inch after planting (to allow them to thicken), and protected with a biodegradable membrane to protect them from being outcompeted by vegetation. Each year, take 1.5 inches off them until they are at least 6ft tall. Leave one tree per 10m/30ft grow to maturity. For tree planting, if you are planting in an area that will realistically be wet, such as a riverbank or a nutrient flow pathway, you should select trees that like ‘wet feet’. Suitable native trees are Alder, Birch, and Willow (Sallys). Willow is naturally rich in rooting hormones and will put down its own roots if a slip taken from a tree already on the farm is driven into the ground. Willow is particularly useful for planting on riverbanks or drains to prevent erosion.

What’s The Buzz With Beekeeping?

Another beekeeping season has come and gone and hopefully there is some “honey in the jar”. All that remains to be done in 2023 is to make sure that the bees have adequate stores (honey) for Winter. If in doubt feed syrup which is sugar and water mixed on a 1:1 rate. Also remove any Varroa strips, if used, and make sure your hives are well anchored against the Winter winds. The past year will probably not go down as a record year for honey production. This is due mainly to a lot of rain during July which is the main month for honey flow. However beekeepers are a resilient lot and we are not in beekeeping solely for honey production as we are fully aware of the important role played by honey bees in plant pollination. in 2023 the Duhallow Beekeepers

Association ran a very successful beginners course in beekeeping. This was based in the James O Keeffe Institute in Newmarket. The course began with four Indoor lectures and eight outdoor, hands on demonstrations at the IRD apiary. In all twenty new beekeepers signed up to this course which was free and we are delighted to report that 75% of these beginners have at least one hive of bees. Huge thanks must go to our course lecturers and outdoor demonstrators Catherine, John , and Padraig along with Paddy who constantly monitors hive activity in Newmarket. Millstreet Community School Update

Millstreet Community School MCS is 50!

Millstreet Community School has been serving the community for fifty years, and is going from strength to strength. This long tradition has been constantly evolving to meet the requirements of students in a fastchanging world. We will be looking back on this proud tradition at our celebration in the school on December 1st, where past and present students will wander down memory lane with Marty Morrissey, along with lots of music and song with special guests including Niamh Kavanagh, who obviously has great memories of Millstreet. Millstreet Community School Update

MCS First Year Mass preparing for the next debate in their group. An Integration Workshop was facilitated for the First Year group, with the theme ‘We Are All Equal But Different!’ First Year students experienced a fun and lively Integration Workshop with plenty activities and games to get everyone involved and have their opinion heard. Students learned about power dynamics, personal choice and its impact. Learning through games allowed students to play with complex and sometimes difficult topics in a way

that left them engaged with each other, laughing and energised and acutely aware that we are all equal but different.

First Years have also been enjoying Peer Mentoring with the newly trained TY volunteers, and have benefited from the wisdom of the TYs in getting started in MCS.

The First Years and their families were welcomed to the First Year Mass,

and thanks to all the First Years who participated so well at this

event. Everyone got a chance to meet afterwards with light refreshments in the canteen. Thanks also to the school musicians for helping to make the occasion so special.

November - Month of The Holy Souls By TOM DENNEHY November, with its darkening days and colder temperatures, is suitably given the title of “Month of the Holy Souls”. As we pray for our loved ones who have gone before us, we should also reflect on the topic of death and what happens after each of us breathes our last. It may be a morbid topic for us to think about, but it is a fact of life. It is an absolute certainty that one day we will have to face our Creator and account for our lives. We need to reflect and make any changes needed so that we are ready when our final hour comes. Our beautiful Catholic faith gives great hope and absolute assurance of a new life in the presence of Jesus in His heavenly kingdom. Jesus came from Heaven to tell us about the love of His father and the place He has prepared for us when we die. We read in Sacred Scripture in John 14. 2, “In my father’s house there are many mansions; if this were not so, I would not have told you, I am going there to prepare a place for you?” In the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1030- 1036, the Church teaches that immediately after death, our soul separates from our earthly body and we stand before God for judgement. Heaven is the ultimate end and destination that we long for. It is a state of eternal happiness. Those who are free from all sin enter Heaven immediately. Purgatory is a place of purification for those who die in friendship with God but are not purified of their sins. Those in Purgatory are guaranteed Heaven eventually but the time spent there depends on how much purification

the soul needs. In November, we pray for the souls in Purgatory that they may soon be with God in Heaven. At the end of time, Our Lord Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead. All souls will be rejoined with their bodies and those in Purgatory will be joined to the souls in Heaven. Hell is for those who have deliberately chosen to reject God and His love. If we persist in a state of serious sin, then we condemn ourselves to Hell. Pride can prevent us from realising our need for the mercy of God for our salvation. One of the primary reasons why November is earmarked as the “Month of the Holy Souls” is that Catholics are reminded to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. We can get masses offered for them, make sacrifices by abstaining from something we like and pray Holy Rosaries and Divine Mercies for them. We visit graveyards and pray and gain plenary indulgences for our loved ones who have died. We are also encouraged to pray especially for those who have no one to pray for them. Some people think Purgatory is a punishment from God and are afraid to journey through it. No, it is not a punishment, it is God’s Divine Mercy and His extravagant love for us. It is a process of healing and transformationpurifying love. God transforms a soul capable of experiencing the fullness of joy that is Heaven. There is a joy and a hope in the souls eagerly awaiting to be

in full communion with The Holy Trinity and to live in the presence of God’s love for all eternity. Then when the souls reach Heaven, they will intercede for us before the throne of God and will be there to welcome us when we enter Heaven. Our wonderful Catholic faith has given us all the necessary means of getting to Heaven. We have the wonderful grace of the Sacraments which gives us the strength on our journey to meet the Lord. Holy Mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist often, regular confession, daily rosary, Adoration and reading Sacred Scripture all heal the wounds of our souls and help us be prepared to be welcomed home. Message from Our Lady of Medjugorje on November 6, 1986. “Dear children; Today, I wish to call you to pray daily for souls in Purgatory. Every soul needs prayer and grace in order to reach God and His love. By doing this, dear children, you obtain new intercessors who will help you in life to realise that all earthly things are not important for you, that only Heaven is that for which is necessary to strive. Therefore, dear children, pray without ceasing that you may be able to help yourselves and the others whom your prayers will bring joy”.

Huge Attendance At National Conference In IRD Duhallow

On Thursday October 19th the national Conference of The Community resource network was O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket. There was a huge attendance from both members and stakeholders with up to 50 organisations represented from all over the island of Ireland. The name on the National conference was Connected Circular Communities, and

delegates to the conference enjoyed refreshments on arrival followed by a morning panel discussions on various topics followed by lunch supplied by Duhallow Community Food Services. They then took a tour of the facilities on the James O Keeffe Complex, where the Social enterprises ran by IRD Duhallow were on show and demonstrations were also given to showcase the work that the enterprises do in the local communities and the circular economy.

In the afternoon the delegates took part in workshops in the James O Keeffe institute.Emma Kavanagh who is the head of the community resource Network said “ thank you again to the IRD Duhallow team for hosting and supporting our member conference become a reality. It was really significant for us to host our event in a community setting like this and I know we all left feeling inspired by the vibrancy and scale of the work taking place in IRD Duhallow in Newmarket.
