Bealtaine in Duhallow Event Calendar

30th April Dawn Chorus 4.30am

Admission: €10. Children free. This includes Breakfast in the community centre after the walk. Starting: at the community centre in Castlemagner, Eircode: P51YP26. Castlemagner Sinsir Club invite you to join their Dawn Chorus with Ornithologist, Vivian O’Gorman who will be giving full details of each bird as they come out singing in the morning from the first to the last a detailed account is given of the male / female tune and atonomy.

1st May Talk about the customs and traditions of Bealtaine 8pm.

Venue: The event will take place at the Bruach na Carraige Heritage Centre in Rockchapel. The Rockchapel Heritage Group are presenting a talk about the customs and traditions of Bealtaine, including the ancient tale of how the Gaels originally came to Ireland on Mayday and Rockchapel’s own special connection with the story. Refreshments will be provided. Everybody is welcome to attend.

4th May

Trailhead Mt Hillary Walk 7pm

No Fee. This walk takes place in a popular forest, with 3 different loops. Walkers will be asked whether they would like to opt for the Father Murphy’s loop (1.5/2 hours) or the Mount Hillary loop which deviates from the forestry through young trees and across heather onto an old track leading you up past the Trig point (2/2.5 hours). There will be tea and coffee afterwards. There are two leaders on the walks, one for those who like to march on and another leading those who like to be more leisurely. Call 029-60633 to register.

7th May Darkness into Light 4.15am

Venue: Edel Quinn Hall Kanturk; Registration online in advance is advised. Kanturk Men’s Shed are organising a Darkness into Light Walk in aid of Pieta House. Join thousands of people around the globe on a special morning walk. Walk and talk, so that together we can create a world where suicide, self-harm and stigma have been replaced by hope, self-care and acceptance.

17th May Day Time Cinema – The Sound of Music 1.30pm

Admission: €10 Venue: James O’Keeffe Institute; Enjoy a social afternoon with lunch served by DCFS followed by watching a recording of John B Keane’s most famous literary publication – The Sound of Music. Hosted By: IRD Duhallow/ Call 029-60633 to register.

20th May Bealtaine Concert 8pm

Admission €10, Children free Venue : Castlemagner Community Centre, Eircode: P51YP26. This event is enjoyed by young and not so young. Song dance, story telling entertainment is the theme of the night and a cuppa is also part of the Bealtaine celebration. Come along and enjoy the celebration and you will also be supporting the Sinsir Club. Everyone is welcome.

8th May Bealtaine Tea Dance 2.30pm-5.30pm

Admission: €10 Millstreet Active Retired are hosting a Bealtaine Tea Dance with Peter Lane & Blackwater Sound in the Wallis Arms Hotel, Millstreet. Refreshments including tea, sandwiches, queen cakes and biscuits will be served, exciting raffle.

11th May River Walk 7pm

No Fee Meeting at the church car park Banteer. Discover the flora, fauna and life in the river on a short leisurely walk on the Glen River. It will be approx. an hour in duration and there will be tea and coffee afterwards. Call 029-60633 to register.

18th May

Clara Loop hike (2.5 - 3hrs) 7pm

No fee. Meeting at the Carnegie car park Millstreet. This is a strenuous climb, but worth it the superb views and the variety of terrain covered. The Loop is a climb near to the top and then goes around the girth of the mountain. There is an option to go to the cross on the summit and return back to the loop walk track further on passing the Trig point and a cairn on the summit. Followed by tea and coffee .There are two leaders on the walks, one for those who like to march on and another leading those who like to be more leisurely. Call 029-60633 to register.

19th May Afternoon of Traditional Music 2-p,4pm

Admission €5 Newmarket Thursday Club are hosting an afternoon of traditional music, song, storytelling and recitation alongside a beautiful Art & Craft display in the CYMS Hall, Newmarket. Light refreshments will be served.

25th May River Walk 7pm

No Fee Kilcorney Discover the flora, fauna and life in the river on a short leisurely walk on the river in Kilcorney. Meeting at the car park in Kilcorney. It will be approx. an hour in duration and there will be tea and coffee afterwards. Time: 7pm No fee. Call 029-60633 to register.

25th of May Jack’s Mystery Tour

Fee will apply and spaces are strictly limited. Jack’s Renowned Mystery Tour takes place on the 25th of May, but where we go from there, only Jack knows. Register 029-60633 by 6th of May.
