ZIVJU LETE Drop by the trendy Fish Counter for an industrial interior of old school glass tiles and vintage hanging metal lamps illuminated by retro light bulbs that would almost put one in mind of an old fish packing plant were it not for the heavenly aroma of sizzling seafood and the soothing sound of jazz. Take a look at the day’s menu on the wall by the counter that includes fresh fish from dorado and salmon to scallops, mussels and prawns just to name a few dishes. A decent wine list is also available, not to mention one of Latvia’s best beers, Valmiermuižas.QC‑4, Dzirnavu 72, tel. (+371) 27 18 96 85. Open 11:00 - 23:00, Fri, Sat 11:00 - 24:00, Sun 12:00 - 22:00. (€7 - 14). A
THAI STATION This sleek orange restaurant is illuminated by industrial lamps hanging from the ceiling as well as natural light from large windows on two sides. The extensive menu of Thai cuisine is accompanied by a photo of each dish so you know exactly what to expect. Everything looks tasty, but we recommend the crispy duck with green curry or one of its large soups.QH‑2, Vaļņu 19, tel. (+371) 67 88 01 52, www. thaistation.eu. Open 11:30 - 23:00, Thu 11:30 - 01:00, Fri, Sat 11:30 - 02:00, Sun 12:00 - 23:00. JASW
STEAKHOUSES STEIKU HAOSS (STEAK CHAOS) Europeans often make fun of Americans but for some reason they just can’t get enough of their ‘culture.’ If you like thick, juicy steaks with giant Idaho baked potatoes, wait staff in what look like line dancing outfits, then walk through the swinging saloon doors and get ready for a feast. The servings are impressive, but bear in mind that the prices are also Texas-sized.QI‑2, Audēju 2, tel. (+371) 67 22 56 99, www.steikuhaoss.lv. Open 11:00 - 24:00, Fri, Sat 11:00 - 01:00. Also on H-2, Meistaru 25, tel. (+371) 67 22 24 19; C-4, Tērbatas 41/43, tel. (+371) 67 27 27 07. (€14 - 28). AE facebook.com/rigainyourpocket

This lovely, recently refurbished space not only offers a delicious barbecue menu that includes local fish, beef entrecote, leg of lamb and even more exotic fair like ostrich steaks, but also spectacular views of Riga Cathedral whose golden clock is nearly at eye level.QH‑1, Doma laukums 1, tel.
