Florida State is breaking new ground in Washington By Brendan Farrington

B

eginning early next year, Florida State University (FSU) will have something in Washington D.C. that would make rival University of Florida gator-green with envy: Two townhomes in the heart of Capitol Hill where students will live while working internships and taking online classes. And it’s not just FSU’s rivals that should be envious. So should Noles back in Tallahassee. This is not typical student housing in a neighborhood filled with other students. The townhomes are in a prime residential neighborhood that’s an easy walk to House and Senate office buildings, the Capitol and both major political party’s headquarters. It’s not that internship programs are new, rather what’s rare is for an out-of-District university to actually own the housing where students live. There will be a resident assistant who doubles as a building manager and student liaison. And the program provides a built-in FSU support network for students.
