SUMMER CONCERTS
POOLS + SPLASH PADS
BERRY PICKING
ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS CAMPING + GLAMPING AND MORE!
Every summer is special for its own reasons, but this summer is special because it’s the summer that my oldest son transitions from elementary school to middle school. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the biggest transition in the world. But it does signify a huge transition to him: No more recess at school.
He’s kind of bummed. Recess is one of his favorite parts about school.
In a way, this is kind of his last summer of being a “kid.” So, I’m thinking we go all out and have a summer to remember. We’ll visit new-to-us water parks. We’ll eat ALL the ice cream. We’ll stay up late, enjoying outdoor concerts and drive-in movies and summer festivals. We’ll make this our best summer yet.
Putting together this issue is what inspired me to go all out. Our June issue is packed full of fun, thanks to our Summer Fun Guide, starting on page 31. From glamping spots to places to get wet, this issue is your resource for planning a delightful season. It’s an issue that you’ll want to reference again and again this summer, so be sure to keep it handy! I know I will.
Here’s to a fabulous summer of being a kid!

Getting children involved in sports can be life changing — but not because they’re one step closer to making the pros or even the middle school team. It simply helps promote a healthy lifestyle while teaching fundamentals to keep them safe, healthy and happy.
Rumor has it, your little one was a great kicker in the womb. So, why not kick a ball around the yard and introduce them to soccer? For toddlers, try simple skills and kick the ball back and forth for quality time together. As they get older, add a goal. But don’t expect Pele just yet. Their attention span is short and too much pressure to perform can ruin the game for them.
“Years of sports research and science tell us that specialization in sports at an early age can be harmful to a child’s body and self-esteem,” says Jason Greene, manager of Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience at The Children’s Museum. “We dive into what kids want to get out of sports. It’s interesting to hear them say what they want most is to do their best, please their grownups and feel part of a team! Winning is usually at the bottom of the list.”
Sports Legends coaches are trained to teach age-appropriate skills and are part of the Positive Coaching Alliance, which means they understand that sports can also be an important avenue to learn life’s most important lessons. Coaches weave that into all their activities, and now they’ll be working with professional athletes from the Indy Eleven soccer team.
“We can’t wait to see the faces of kids as they meet some of our athletes during player appearances,” says Greg Stremlaw, Indy Eleven president and CEO.
“It’s a great way for us to give back to our community through camps and other opportunities that will make the sport more accessible for children.” Look for exclusive offers for general and special event admission at The Children’s
Museum and Indy Eleven games at IUPUI’s Carroll Stadium.
Families should also get ready to run, jump and throw at the museum as part of a new, long-term partnership with USATF.
Children and adults are encouraged to run a 50 meter dash and compare their time to USATF legend Wilma Rudolph, sprint down the runway, leap into a long jump pit and step into the ring to throw a shot put.
“RunJumpThrow has consistently provided meaningful opportunities for kids to get excited about physical activity,” says Max Siegel, USATF CEO. “A fun and positive introduction to the basics can be a
catalyst in developing a lifelong love of sports, which is why we’re thrilled to unveil a permanent Hershey/USATF RunJumpThrow experience at the museum.”
Jackie Joyner-Kersee won six Olympic medals with USATF while competing at four separate Olympic games in the 1980s and 90s, and says she wishes she would’ve had a track like this when she was younger. She even wrote a children’s book, Running for the Gold: Connecting Kids to Dreams, to inspire kids to believe in themselves and overcome challenges. "I believe in meeting people where they are, but being able to encourage them to believe the impossible is probable," Joyner-Kersee says.
You might not know it, but some of the most-watched events of Olympic broadcasts involve track and field. They are also the country's No. 1 high school and junior high school participatory sport — not to mention, more than 30 million adults run for fun and as a hobby in the United States. Finally, it could be great training for the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, whether you walk or run one of the events.
If you’re a person of a certain age, you might remember the good ol’ days of taking cold, hard cash to school to buy lunch. Lunch Money Boutique, a charming children’s store located in Indy’s Butler-Tarkington neighborhood, is inspired by such memories. But instead of kids using their money to buy Doritos and cream soda for lunch (guilty as charged), Lunch Money Boutique is a place where they can “stash” that money and use it to buy the latest fashion and accessories.
The fashion and accessories you’ll find all around the fun, colorful store are inspiring. Ranging in sizes from newborn to size 16, Lunch Money Boutique strives to offer brands that parents love and trust, as well as niche brands that might be new to them. Shoppers will often find cool-kid threads from Mayoral and Miles the Label, sparkly
friendship bracelets from Coast & Cove, and mini backpacks from State.
Looking for the perfect gift for an eclectic kid, or a great babyshower gift that no one else will think to give? Lunch Money Boutique is the place to find such a gift. Here, you’ll spy all kinds of creative items lining the shelves, including edible chemistry kits, David Bowie dolls, ecofriendly baby teethers, leatherbound journals and more.
Conveniently, Lunch Money
Boutique is located right next door to Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore, a beloved independent bookstore for kids, so you can get all of your kid-related shopping done with little effort!

This is the dessert that our editor, Nicole Sipe, makes the most for her family during the summer. It’s easy to make — especially if you use store-bought pie dough. You can use any type of summer fruit you have on hand, including berries, cherries or other stone fruit.
1 store-bought frozen pie crust
2 cups of fresh or frozen summer fruit
¼ cup sugar
2 teaspoons cornstarch
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
A squeeze of lemon
1 egg, beaten
– Preheat the oven to 425°F. Place one 9-inch frozen pie crust on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, and allow to thaw.
In a mixing bowl, toss the fruit, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and lemon juice together until combined. Gently dump the mixture into the center of the thawed dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
Note: We recommend calling ahead to confirm individual picking times and berry availability. Weather can affect harvest times.
Working in a circle, tuck the crust in overlapping pieces over the berries. Using a pastry brush, brush the crust with the beaten egg.
– Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then turn the heat down to 350°F and bake 15 more minutes until the crust is golden. If the crust browns too quickly, cover the galette with foil and continue baking. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

My story is not unique. It will probably sound familiar to most women. Feeling like “Me” again after having kids was just always a struggle. I felt like my body did this AMAZING thing, twice, and then said “I’m done now.”
I have always hovered between 130-140 lbs, never really counting calories, or living on a scale. After my son Jack was born, I evened out around 150 pounds. Then two years later after Charlie, and IVF, I naturally went to around 160 pounds. And again, it was never the number that bothered me. I felt like I was in a body that wasn’t mine; like I was wearing a suit that belonged to some other human.
I did what most people do; I tried to eat healthier, I worked out more. I started Orange Theory religiously 5 times a week for about a year. I created an amazing sense of accountability with my regular people there and, I’m sure, dramatically improved my cardiovascular health! But my body FELT the same. It LOOKED the same. I was used to being STRONG and hadn’t felt that way in almost 5 years.
Then….covid. And everything changed. I couldn’t stick with my regular workout routine which, turns out, was the best thing that ever happened to me.
My husband has always been into fitness, health and strength training. For YEARS he had preached to me, “Stop killing yourself on a treadmill and lift heavy sh*t! Then do it again and again and you WILL feel how you’re wanting to feel!” And because I’m stubborn, I didn’t listen, until I had to.
It was at that point I started strength training with him. Within 3 months I started feeling like myself. It was around this time that I decided to go forward with my “mommy makeover” and had a tummy tuck, (small) implants and some liposuction. And it was at this point that everyone decided I had “cheated,” but the pictures can’t lie.
Pre-surgery I still felt like I was wearing someone else’s body. Post-surgery me felt that way still a bit even though there was a dramatic difference that for me gave me a kick in the rear to get my health in the right place to improve upon what I had invested in and get my body to a place where I felt STRONG again and like I could play with my kids again for the next decade without getting winded!
THIS is when the real changes started to be visible. My “post surgery” pictures next to my pictures after 6 months of lifting were incredible! Not only could I FEEL the results, I was starting to SEE them. My clothes all fit, which is huge. Getting dressed each morning was on autopilot,
where before it had been a battle that often ended in frustration and tears. And that was enough for me. I was sold. Steve was right. Lift heavy, don’t eat like an a-hole and you will be able to be who you want. Whatever the goal, you CAN get there. You just have to let go of the excuses, decide to commit to yourself and then make that decision 80% of the days.
I was a guinea pig with his new company, HawkFit. And over the last 1.5 years his programs have become life changing for so many people. Steve is so incredibly passionate about helping people meet their goals and change their lives. He is a Licensed Nutritionist and a Certified Master Trainer. So, lets get HawkFit!
As parents, we can be overwhelmed with the pressure to help our children grow to be good people. How can we support them at school, engage them in learning about others, teach them to experience and care about their world?
Community service is something many families value, but finding opportunities for children, especially young children, can be difficult. They can collect cans for the soup kitchen, but can’t serve the food. They can tag along while you clean kennels at the animal shelter, but typically can’t go inside the kennels.
Seeds of Caring was founded to fill that need. Seven years ago, Brandy Jemczura, now founder and executive director of Seeds of Caring, couldn’t find anywhere age-appropriate and meaningful for her children to engage in community service. Jemczura spent her college and early adult life volunteering, and knew she wanted to instill those values into her own family. When faced with the realization that she couldn’t find what she wanted, she designed the opportunities herself.
“There are a lot of great reasons to not include children in service, primarily efficiency or safety,” explains Blair Everett, Indianapolis program manager for Seeds of Caring. “So we find opportunities that eliminate those issues.”
Seeds of Caring provides curated service programming appropriate for children ages 2-12. And these aren’t projects where your child stands by you while you do the work. The programs are created intentionally for kids to dig in, learn, engage, discuss, and most importantly act.
“We have found that kids in this age group learn best through empathetic reflection,” Everett says. “So, we aren’t just making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless shelter. We are also talking about what is food insecurity and building those social emotional skills of understanding.”
As programming grew in popularity, there arose an interest to expand beyond Seeds of Caring’s home base of Columbus, Ohio. After a study of six cities,
Indianapolis was chosen, primarily because of its philanthropic nature and cultural similarities to Columbus. The first service project began on March 1, 2023, and already the reception has been larger than anticipated. “We had to close our first project early due to overwhelming demand,” Everett says.
Currently, Seeds of Caring Indianapolis offers Anywhere Kits, which can be completed anywhere by individuals or groups. Each Anywhere Kit project takes 60 to 90 minutes and includes a self-facilitated discussion guide. These guides are developed by in-house staff with the support of topic experts and offer guidance for how best to use the guide for the age of the participating children.
“These are tough topics, so we are trying to give parents the tools to tackle those topics,” Everett says. “We believe strongly in introducing kids to their community and in understanding inclusivity.” You can learn more about the Anywhere Kit options via the website (seedsofcaring.org).
Once complete, kits are delivered to a Seeds of Caring ambassador, who has volunteered to collect and deliver completed kits to the donor site. Best of all, there is no commitment needed to participate in projects. Select as many or as few to suit your needs and schedule.
“We know people with young kids are busy,” Everett says. “By eliminating barriers to participation, we can make volunteering something that could be more common and prevalent.”
By 2024, Seeds of Caring hopes to hire a staff to oversee Indianapolis programming and launch Kindness Corps, a program through which the team works with teachers to provide lesson plans and service curriculum for classroom use. They are excitedly planning the first in-person event for Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2024 and hope to have more in-person events ready throughout that year.
If you’re interested in getting involved, visit seedsofcaring.org/ indianapolis for the current list of Anywhere Kit projects. The team is also looking for ambassadors. “With more porches [to serve as drop-off locations], we can have more projects for more children” Blair says.
hands-on volunteer opportunities for kids to make a difference in the community.
Special Olympics Indiana is so much more than a sporting competition. This organization has a vision of an inclusive world for all driven by the power of sport, through which people with intellectual disabilities live active, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Founded in 1969, Special Olympics Indiana has more than 16,000 athletes, Unified partners, 10,000 coaches and volunteers statewide. Their mission is to provide year-round sports training and competition in Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics offer participants the opportunity to develop physical fitness, courage, joy and friendship.
Special Olympics Indiana’s largest annual competition, the State Summer Games, is happening this month. The 53rd Annual Summer Games will take place June 9-11 on the campuses of Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, and will bring nearly 3,000 athletes together to participate in bocce, bowling, cycling, powerlifting, swimming, track and field, and volleyball.
This year’s Summer Games theme, “Everyday Champions,” was inspired by the documentary film, The Best We’ve Got: The Carl Erskine Story. Baseball pitcher Carl Erskine’s life was an example of one that was filled with victories both on and off the
baseball field. In his community, he was a champion for acceptance, leadership and inclusion in ways that made a lasting impact. Through Erskine’s life, we see how much of a difference one person can truly have — and that it is possible for us all to make a difference.
According to the Special Olympics Indiana website, “At the core, Special Olympics is a sports organization that uses the power of sport as a catalyst for social change. Through sport, we challenge society. By highlighting how the needs of people with intellectual disabilities are not being met, we expose inequity and exclusion. By drawing attention to the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, we break down misperceptions and tackle negative attitudes.”
In addition to showing your support to the athletes, families and organization by attending the event, you can also become a volunteer or consider donating financially to Special Olympics Indiana. This nonprofit relies entirely on corporate, civic and individual donations. They do not receive any federal or state-appropriated funds.
To learn more about the important work Special Olympics Indiana is doing and how to get involved, visit soindiana.org . And if you have a future athlete interested in participating, be sure to check out the Special Olympics Indiana website for more information on how to sign up to compete.
