president’s letter Dear Friends,

September 2012 marked a special occasion for Immaculate High School. It was the 50th anniversary of the first freshmen class who began their high school education at St. Gregory the Great grammar school, while awaiting the completion of the IHS facility. Many things have changed since 1962. We’ve gone from chalkboards to interactive whiteboards and textbooks to iPads; but the one thing that has remained constant, is our commitment to our Mission. At Immaculate, education is not just about communicating content it is about nurturing the development of the whole student. An Immaculate education takes place not only in the classroom, but also in the chapel, on the athletic fields, on the stage, and in our communities, with faculty and staff who continue to inspire students and cultivate ideas. It is further enhanced with seminars, speakers, activities, and events we conduct throughout the year.

Our students excel academically, win state championships, and are awarded top honors for their Fine Arts performances. We are proud to share these special moments on the following pages, but what makes us most proud is the good character of our students. By sharing experiences, providing guidance and encouragement, students learn to make the right choices and do the right thing. Ultimately, Immaculate develops faith-filled leaders. This year, we were struck by unprecedented natural disasters and unspeakable tragedy. During these difficult times we relied on our faith and the Immaculate family bond to help us remain strong. We came together in prayer and in service, to provide support to those who were suffering and needed help. Whether it was helping an elderly neighbor, cleaning up a hurricane ravaged community, raising much-needed funds for a sick child or holding a prayer service; our students responded with more than 18,000 hours of community service. It is here that they demonstrated our motto of Respect, Responsibility and Reverence. By fulfilling our Mission to nurture the development of the whole student, Immaculate is changing the world -- one student at a time. By supporting our Mission, you are changing the world -- one donation at a time.

As you thumb through TRADITIONS, I hope you will enjoy seeing the smiles and joy our students experienced this year, and know that you helped make this possible as a result of your partnership and support. On behalf of the students, faculty and staff, I thank you for your generosity. With warmest regards,

Kathleen D. Casey, IHS President

chairman’s letter It has been a very rewarding time for me since I was appointed Chairman of the Immaculate High School Advisory Board at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. I have had the privilege to be involved with Immaculate on many committees and the Advisory Board over the past eleven years.

My wife Patty and I are the proud parents of three children who graduated from Immaculate High School -Anthony III ‘07, Chelsie ‘08, and Ryan ‘13. I believe that the school has given them a wonderful foundation and accomplished its mission of nurturing their “spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical, and social growth.” In fact, it has done an extraordinary job with my children. The school has become so dear to me that, although my children have graduated, I am committed to an additional three years as the Advisory Board Chairman!

“Remember... once a Mustang, always a Mustang.”

For the next school year, I am very happy to welcome Fr. Jeff Couture as the new Immaculate High School Spiritual Director. It has been a privilege for me to get to know Fr. Jeff over the past couple of years as he served St. Mary’s Parish in Bethel, Connecticut. He is a wonderful person who will make a major impact on the school, faculty and students. The Immaculate family is certainly blessed to have him join us.

Debra Basile has joined the IHS staff as our Director of Advancement. I have worked with Deb on many charitable events over the years and know she will do an excellent job. Denise (Henry) Suarez ‘87 has also joined IHS as our Alumni Coordinator. I am confident she will do a great job in continuing to build our alumni spirit. Both of these women bring a tremendous amount of talent, energy and enthusiasm to everything they undertake.

We are very thankful for the Immaculate alumni who have continued to support the school over the years and welcome any alumni who would like to reconnect with the school and get involved in supporting their Alma Mater. Remember…”Once a Mustang, always a Mustang!” Academically, athletically, and artistically our IHS students continue the tradition of excellence.

I am very happy to report that our graduating Class of 2013 was offered more than $9.5 million dollars in grants, scholarships and awards; and our sports teams were a great source of Mustang pride. All have had successful seasons, capped off by the Girls Soccer Team winning the Class “S” State Soccer Championship and the SWC Soccer Title. This year’s performance of “In the Heights” garnered 24 nominations, and several awards at Connecticut High School Theater Awards. In closing, I would like to thank all of you for your support of Immaculate High School. I look forward to many exciting accomplishments in the future. Sincerely,

Anthony Rizzo Jr., IHS Advisory Board Chairman

The last few years have brought much talk of “21st century skills” but uncertainty remains about why and how skill demands are actually changing. Will students really need better or different skills to succeed in life and work in the 21st century? If so, what trends are behind such changes? And what specific kinds of knowledge and skills will be most important? Broadly speaking, five major lessons emerge from the expert research and opinion on what kinds of knowledge and skills will most benefit students in the future:

Defining a 21st Century Education:

The Immaculate Way By Joe Carmen, Principal

1. Creating Life-Long Leaders: Students who obtain more education will be at a great advantage; increasingly, some postsecondary is essential for an opportunity to support a family or secure a middle-class lifestyle – Immaculate continues its focus on being a top tier college preparatory high school… ensuring 95% our students not only get accepted to their 1st or 2nd choice college but succeed there as well. 2. “Traditional” Knowledge & Skills: The need for traditional knowledge and skills in subjects like math, language arts, and science is not being “displaced” by a new set of skills; in fact, students who take more advanced math courses and master higher math skills, for example, will have a distinct advantage over their peers – we continue to evaluate and upgrade our course offerings… leveraging online courses our students have access to over 50 AP classes. 3. Real Life Applications: At the same time, for success both on the job and in their personal lives, students must also better learn how to apply what they learn in those subjects to deal with real world challenges, rather than simply “reproduce” the information on tests – developing courses such as a Biomedical Engineering sequence in which students synthesize and apply knowledge to solve real world problems will prepare our children well in this area.

4

4. Critical Thinking: Students who develop an even broader set of in-demand competencies—the ability to think critically about information, solve novel problems, communicate and collaborate, create new products and processes, and adapt to change—will be at an even greater advantage in work and life – our service learning teaches our students to interact with people from the most to least fortunate, understand their problems and help solve them. 5. Depth vs. Breadth: Applied skills and competencies can best be taught in the context of the academic curriculum, not as a replacement for it or “add on” to it; in fact, cognitive research suggests that some competencies like critical thinking and problem solving are highly dependent on deep content knowledge and cannot be taught in isolation – our iPad 1:1 initiative, entering into our second year, is transforming how we teach in every classroom. From flipping the classroom with teachers recording their lessons to students becoming responsible for their own learning, our classrooms are undergoing a rapid paradigm shift. What remains an unbreakable bond with our past is the commitment to our students that when they graduate with these skills, imbued in their IHS DNA will be the Respect, Reverence and Responsibility that are the hallmark of every Immaculate graduate. Thank you for your continued belief and support of all things IHS.

About Father Jeff Couture...Fr. Jeff grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. He and his two triplet brothers and older sister attended Holy Family Parish. Fr. Jeff worked several years in restaurant management and was a high school teacher at Fr. Lopez Catholic High school in Daytona Beach, Florida before entering the priesthood. He was most recently a parochial vicar at Saint Mary Church in Bethel. This January will be his 20th year in youth ministry, which started with the very first Catholic Heart Work Camp in 1994. Since then he has lead four World Youth Day trips, many mission trips and youth retreats. He has also founded and worked with several youth groups in the area, such as Saint Joseph in Brookfield, Saint Edward in New Fairfield, and Saint Mary in Bethel. Fr. Jeff is happy to be joining the Immaculate community, “I am looking forward to working with the faculty and staff here at IHS, and most of all the students of Immaculate. In the words of John Paul II, “the youth are our future and without them there is no church.” (World Youth Day 1999). Fr. Jeff can be reached at (203) 7441510 extension 170 or frjeff@immaculatehs.org. An Unexpected Alumni Gift Helps Complete the New Gymnasium

Late one Friday afternoon, Immaculate Accounting Manager Sue Nolan opened an email from Ralph Scozzafava ‘76 that read…“I’m in the process of finalizing some charitable donations and would like to donate some funds to be used for Athletics at IHS.” Sue was thrilled. It isn’t every day IHS receives such a generous offer and Ralph’s timing was perfect. Immaculate was in the middle of a campaign to raise funds for the gym renovation project. IHS fans had been cheering on the Mustangs from the same wooden seats for 50 years and the bleachers had come to the end of their useful life. The logo in the middle of the gym floor was faded and the walls and the banners needed to be refreshed. Immaculate had just completed Phase 1 of the gym renovation and was looking for seed money to launch Phase 2. Ralph’s donation provided the necessary funding to get Phase 2 underway and as a result IHS has a beautiful newly renovated gym. Jeff Castaldi, Athletic Director said, “IHS has the best looking gym in the conference. It makes our teams and fans so proud!” 12

IHS Honors Former Principal, Mr. Gerwien with a Special Celebration on his 80th birthday Alumni from the graduating classes of 1966-2000, faculty, family, and friends raised funds for the new Robert Gerwien Scholarship created in his honor. The alumni of Immaculate High School have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for Mr. Gerwien and his service to the school for well over 30 years. The Gerwien family has generously matched donations dollar for dollar up to $10,000. The scholarship will be awarded to incoming or current Immaculate High School students. The final scholarship amount of over $34,000 and notes from alumni were presented to him as his family celebrated his 80th birthday. (Donors will be listed in next year’s Traditions.)

Alumni Council and Events Calendar A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI OFFICE: When I stepped through the front door of Immaculate High School on my first day as Alumni Coordinator, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of nostalgia as I recalled four great years spent inside these walls. I encourage all of our alumni to visit IHS, where you will find the same feeling of welcome and of family, an amazing level of energy and school spirit, and of course, a faith-filled atmosphere that is at the heart of everything that happens at Immaculate. As alumni, we share a special bond and a love of the school that spans over a half-century. It is wonderful for me to see how many of my fellow alumni have chosen to pass along the gift of an Immaculate education to their children. I want all alumni, everywhere, to know the same thing that current parents who are alums know -- GREAT things are happening at the Home of the Mustangs! We`d love for you to come back and see first-hand that the Mustang spirit is alive and well. We want you to reconnect with IHS and with each other. Lastly, we humbly ask you to give back whenever possible of your time, talents, and resources. Simply put, Immaculate High School needs the support of our alumni and we are extremely grateful for it. We love to hear your stories and enjoy sharing your testimonials as to the impact an Immaculate education has had on your life. Please keep in touch and email me any time at dsuarez@immaculatehs.org. We are always looking for ways to better serve our alumni so that together we can serve our alma mater.

Denise (Henry) Suarez ’87 Alumni Coordinator (203) 744-1510 ext. 158 or dsuarez@immaculatehs.org

COME BACK! It is always wonderful when our alumni make a spontaneous

visit to IHS, attend the Spring Musical, gather a foursome for the Golf Outing, or cheer on the Mustangs at Homecoming. Check out the Alumni Events Calendar and know that you are always welcome back. If you would like to bring your own children for a tour of IHS, so that together you can see the changes and updates, as well as all of the ways that Immaculate is still a special place, please contact the school at (203) 744-1510, or just stop by!

RECONNECT!

We know that so many of our alumni want to get back in touch with IHS and with each other. Whether it’s by visiting the IHS website, downloading our new mobile app, or checking out our Facebook page and Twitter posts, alumni are being kept up-to-date on all of the happenings at their alma mater. The #1 thing that you can do to stay in touch with IHS and be kept informed is to update your contact information by going to www. immaculatehs.org/alumni. Alumni are also reconnecting with each other. The Classes of 2002 and 2003 recently held reunions in the spring, and the Classes of 1973, 1983 and 1993 are busily planning reunions for this fall!

Alumni

Alumni on Facebook: Not everything on Facebook works perfectly. For instance, listing your Education history with the proper Immaculate High School page can be rather difficult. Here’s an easy way to make sure you`re connected to the right page: start by editing your profile, in the box that asks ‘Where did you go to high school?` enter in “ImmaculateHighSchool” – no spacing is important here. Make sure to select the Immaculate High School with our crest on a cool blue thumbnail picture – see this screenshot for an example:

CLASS REUNIONS: Classes of 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009…THIS IS YOUR REUNION YEAR! Would you like to plan a reunion for your class but are not sure where to get started? Please contact our Alumni Coordinator, Denise Suarez ‘87 at dsuarez@ immaculatehs.org, or visit our website at www.immaculatehs.org/reunion. Mrs. Arsenault joined members of the Class of ‘02 at their recent reunion

GIVE BACK!

Alumni should feel great about where Immaculate High School is headed. IHS is on the move and we need the support of our over 6,000 alumni more than ever. We need you to come back and enjoy many of the fun annual events that Immaculate hosts. We need you to give of your time and talents at Career Day, volunteering in any area of interest with the Alumni Association, or in planning a Class Reunion. If you have a business that could sponsor an event, or offer a service to IHS we would be most grateful and happy to list your contribution on the IHS website. And of course, we need your help financially. As you`ll see in the testimonials of Brian McGovern ‘89 and David Cappiello ‘86, our alums feel that their investment in the students, the Mission, and the future of Immaculate High School is a good one!

We thank the Class of ‘03 for donating $1000 to Angel Aid in memory of their classmates Richard Gustavson and Armin Pfeil during their recent reunion. Pictured from left to right are the reunion organizers: Tamra Butler, Kevin Hudak, Jack Dunleavy & Don Naiman

Alumni Testimonials I am a proud Mustang. I had a great time as a student of Immaculate and many of my best adult friends I met at Immaculate. We decided to sponsor student scholarships because we believe in the mission of the school. The development of the entire student is crucial to develop leaders of tomorrow. My entire family loves the process of selecting the students for our scholarships. We read the essays, so full of hope and possibilities and then we decide together. We feel it’s our turn to help other students experience what I loved when I first became a Mustang.

I entered the halls of Immaculate High School 31 years ago. Like many other freshman starting high school, I was probably more concerned about making new friends and having fun than getting a quality education. But at IHS, this wasn`t a choice I had to make. The education I received at Immaculate was second-to-none, and the individual attention the teachers were able to give me was invaluable. Immaculate High School helped give me both strong educational and social foundations that have allowed me to grow personally and professionally, and I will always be grateful. That is why I have chosen to serve on the IHS Development Committee and as Vice President of the Alumni Association. In addition, I have committed to giving a four-year Alumni Scholarship to an incoming IHS freshman who is both, deserving and in need. In my opinion, there is no better way to show my appreciation to our alma matter than to give of my time, talent and personal resources to ensure that the today’s students have the same opportunities that I had over three decades ago.

The Alumni Council is looking for volunteers to be the lead contact person for each graduating year. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Denise Suarez ‘87 at dsuarez@immaculatehs.org.

“When you start the adventure of High School you are never quite sure where it will lead. In many respects you aren`t sure what is being absorbed as your mind and spirit grows. With me, the realization came first in biology class at Immaculate. I loved the natural world. As I grew older and studied in college, the world was opening to environmental issues.

EDUCATION CHANGES LIVES AND SO CAN YOU How different would you life be without your Immaculate High School education? Just use the following language on IRA or insurance beneficiary forms, or in a will or trust. It’s that simple. “I leave (e.g.% of estate, $ amount, residue) to Immaculate High School, a non-profit corporation (Tax ID #06-1353635), to be used for (*fill in from options below) at Immaculate High School.” *financial need-based scholarships *academic merit-based scholarships *general support of educational programs and activities

George Landegger

Mr. Landegger is pictured with this year’s Landegger Scholars: (First row leftright) Chianny Dejesus ‘16, Brianna Dachenhausen ‘16, Lorena Curtis ‘16, Margot Cano ‘16, Denise Bermeo ‘15; Second row: Mykland Cothias ‘16, Christopher Magana, 15, Marcus Espinal ‘16, Patrick Relator ‘16, Joao Vieira ‘15, Thomas Zielinski ‘14, Randy Hurtado ‘ 15, and Tom Cherisme ‘ 16

George Landegger is a blessing to the Immaculate community. Kathleen Casey praised Mr. Landegger’s contributions by saying, “George Landegger is a great partner to Immaculate and an incredible man, not just because of his amazing generosity but because he cares so deeply about the students. He is truly invested in their education in every sense of the word.” Below Mr. Landegger describes why he believes in supporting Immaculate High School and our mission. Throughout my life I have had positive exposure to Catholic education, beginning with parochial school nuns through the 4th grade at St. Augustine’s in Larchmont, New York, followed by the Irish Christian brothers at Iona Prep in New Rochelle, New York, and then the Jesuits at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. The relationship with Georgetown has continued over the past 30 years, first as a member of the Board of Visitors at the Foreign Service School, and later as Chairman and Chairman Emeritus.

policy. I quickly agreed to provide four scholarships a year for kindergarten through ninth grade, and then six scholarships for each of the four years at Immaculate. Immaculate is such a caring place for incoming students, starting with the administrators, school counselors, teachers, and most importantly, the other students, creating the nurturing environment to help open minds and achieve full participation in the beautiful community called Immaculate.

“Immaculate is such a caring place for incoming students, starting with the administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and very importantly, the other students, creating the nurturing environment to help open minds and achieve full participation in the beautiful community called Immaculate.”

Approximately 20 years ago, under the leadership of Fr. Robert Morrissey, pastor of St. Mary’s in Ridgefield, we collaborated in re-establishing the parochial grammar school, one class at a time, and ultimately served approximately 200 students in eight grades. My activity in education included the public school sector and the placement of Writing-to-Read systems in 73% of kindergarten through 12th grade classes in Alabama; providing scholarships to junior colleges and four-year institutions in that state, and later chairing the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. In Connecticut, I met with Dr. Margaret Dames, then Head of Education for the Diocese, as well as the leadership at Immaculate High School and at St. Peter’s/Sacred Heart Grammar School in Danbury, and received an enthusiastic reception. My thought process was that, if children were financially able to go into the parochial system and then into a Diocesan high school like Immaculate, there could be a “pipeline” to college and a better life. As I got to know the extremely committed administrators, teachers and guidance counselors at Immaculate, it became evident that this school was extraordinary and working hard toward a “no child left behind”

When making the decision to partner with Immaculate, I was unaware that Immaculate was also at the cutting edge of the new paradigm in education – the “flipped” classroom. Immaculate has assimilated them into their curriculum and created a situation where basic information is supplied on-line on iPads at home, and the students come to school already equipped to participate in a seminar-like discussion, which the teacher moderates as the students engage in collaborative work.

Anyone who has been involved in conveying information to others knows that the best way to learn is, in fact, to teach, and Immaculate has been the pioneer in Connecticut’s Diocesan world in adopting this new approach which involves students learning, not by rote, but through understanding the subject matter. Last year, all the scholarship winners, their parents, school counselors, and administrators were brought together for a celebratory dinner – an event that is intended to take place annually, though over time, we will need a bigger venue. It is a joy for me to be able to provide this opportunity to deserving students, and an honor to be part of the outstanding educational work that is done everyday in the classroom, in guidance sessions, on the playing field, and in the administrators’ offices at Immaculate High School.

What Immaculate Means to Me... “I am getting ready for another football season out at the University of Notre Dame, cheering on the Fighting Irish from the student section. In addition, I have spent the last semester working in New York City for the Chairman of NBC Sports and continue this summer to sit beside the SVP of Marketing. I realize that the opportunities that have been given to me would not have been possible without the foundation that Immaculate High School helped create for me. The principles it fostered, both inside and outside the classroom, allowed me to continue to grow and develop throughout my collegiate experience. Thank you Immaculate for all you do for your students!” Jennifer Daily ‘10

“I owe a lot to Immaculate as my teachers helped prepare me for college but more importantly they taught me that hard work, humility and perseverance pay off. Currently, I am a team physician leader at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, part of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda. I treat injured military personnel from all branches of the armed services at the National Intrepid.” Dr. Eugene Casagrande ‘75

“I don’t think I would have accomplished my achievements at University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom without the motivation provided by IHS. My second out of only three years at University, I was chosen as the first female, first international, and youngest director of the University’s musical. I was given £8,000 and a lot of good faith to produce a musical of my choice, with my choice of production and creative team members, and my choice of venue. Jekyll & Hyde the Musical was shown at the Nottingham Arts Theatre in the City Centre to a audience of 320 people per show. It ran from the 27th of February until the 2nd of March.” Lauren Burkardt‘11 “I would be nowhere near the person I am today without my time at IHS! What a difference the faculty and atmosphere IHS has on its students! I just finished my third year at Marywood University pursuing a double major in Hospitality Management and Marketing. I will be graduating early in December 2013 due to the AP credits from IHS. This year I was named as the 2013 IACC (International Association of Conference Centers) Future Leader Award Recipient and also named as the recipient of the 2013 NICHE ICHRIE Promise award scholarship for excellence in hospitality & culinary. I launched the “Love is Stronger” project to show students and the community around my school that love is stronger than violence, in wake of the terrible tragedy in Newtown and delivered 1,500 homemade valentines to the Newtown community for Valentine’s Day. I continue to dance, am the captain of the Marywood Dance Team as well as bake. My mom and I opened an in-home bakery in 2011 and I am enjoying making specialty cakes for clients around the area. I am working as a marketing manager at a beautiful historic hotel, the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel. I owe a huge THANK YOU to IHS for giving me the foundation to excel at my college. IHS taught me the importance of working hard academically as well as upholding a strong role in the community, qualities both of which I have brought with me as I continue on through life and prepare to graduate.” Amanda Greenwood ‘10

Immaculate High School Global Strategy Vision Statement: To establish a collaborative, energetic learning environment in which students engage with one another in classrooms locally, nationally and internationally so that their view of the world may expand and they may become successful and responsible participants in the global marketplace and valued members of society who work to better the welfare or all its citizens. Currently about 4% of our student population is international. Over the next 3-5 years we plan to grow the international population to approximately 10%. Our goal is to have a diverse international population. Over the past few years we have had students from South Korea, China, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Brazil in our student body. These students have added a wonderful dimension to our school. Our students live with host families and have benefitted from this cultural experience as well. The Class of 2013 had our largest number of International graduates and included Zikang “Jason” Feng (China) - Northeastern University, InHwa “Zoey” Hong (South Korea) - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Jin Hyug Kang (South Korea) - Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, RuiLin Li (China) - Drexel University, and Di Yang (China) - Arizona State University.

Mrs. Loya represents Immaculate at the 2012 China-US Principal Symposium on Global Education Lynn Loya, Director of the School Counseling Office and International Student Program, had the wonderful opportunity to travel to China in the Fall of 2012 as a guest of the Astar Education Institute. Astar is one of the student placement agencies that recruits Chinese students to attend Immaculate High School. Mrs. Loya traveled to Beijing, Chengdu and Shenzhen where she had the opportunity to experience some of the landmarks of Chinese culture like the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City. She met some delightful students at the Sichuan University High School, the Sichuan Chengdu No. 12 Middle School, and the Shenzhen Qian Long School. As part of this educational/cultural exchange, Mrs. Loya was one of four American educators who presented at the 2012 China-US Principal Symposium on Global Education hosted by the Middle School attached to Sichuan University. Mrs. Loya’s presentation focused on how American high school education cultivates individual talent and encourages individual excellence. The overall focus of the forum was on finding innovative solutions to the challenges of high school education working as cooperative partners in global education.

International Faces & Places Reflecting on a year studying abroad Britney Serpa-Smith ‘14, pictured with her host family during Moros y Cristianos festival activities, spent her sophomore year studying in Spain. When she returned as a junior, she didn’t hesitate to recommend studying abroad to other students. “It’s an awesome experience. It’s completely different!” Her freshmen year at Immaculate certainly helped prepare her for the year she would spend abroad. At school she was immersed in different cultures and different peoples originating from throughout the European Union and even some from Latin America.
