Secretary Benson testifies in front of U.S. House Judiciary Committee on protecting voting rights during pandemic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson testified before the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties of the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary this morning on protecting the right to vote during the COVID-19 pandemic. “As we collectively endure this moment of great uncertainty, caused by a global pandemic that has taken the lives of 100,000 Americans and many more worldwide, it is within both my authority and my responsibility as Michigan’s chief election officer to ensure every voter knows that they do not need to risk their health to cast a ballot,” said Secretary Benson. During her testimony, the Secretary spoke of the voter-approved constitutional amendment passed in November 2018 granting every voter in Michigan the right to vote by mail, and her administration’s efforts to ensure Michiganders understood those rights and trusted the institutions safeguarding them. Secretary Benson also discussed Michigan’s successful May 5 election, conducted primarily by mail, and the needs states — including Michigan — would face to conduct the August and November elections similarly. These included funding requests for voting equipment to process a greater volume of absentee ballots, personal

protection equipment for election workers, and mailing supplies and postage. She also outlined necessary policy changes at the state and federal level, including legislation to enable all voters to vote absentee without an excuse, and called on Congress to provide additional support combating misinformation about voting rights. “This year, perhaps more than any other, Americans will be inundated by efforts to confuse them — about the election process, their rights, the issues at stake, and whether the elections will be held at all,” said Secretary Benson. “These efforts — foreign, domestic, partisan or simply malicious — are designed to foster mistrust in our elections process, depress turnout and erode confidence in the election results and the sanctity of our democracy. We need cannot let misinformation sow seeds of doubt in our elections. Facts must prevail over fear.” A full copy of her testimony can be found at https://content. govdelivery.com/attachments/ MISOS/2020/06/03/file_attachments/1465871/Secretary%20 of%20State%20Jocelyn%20Benson%20-%20US%20House%20 Judiciary%20Committee%20Testimony_06-03-20_Final.pdf.

Rep. Calley urges residents to share their COVID-19 pandemic stories State Rep. Julie Calley today announced a new website to allow the people of Michigan to share their experiences and struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Calley, a member of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic, said MICovidStory.com is an accessible resource concerned residents can use to share their stories with the committee. Michigan has now lost more than 5,000 people to COVID-19, and executive orders and directives from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in response to the crisis have upended the lives and livelihoods of countless more. “The coronavirus has affected residents throughout Michigan in many different ways,” said Calley, of Portland. “I’ve heard from thousands of residents, including people who lost their jobs and are struggling to navigate the unemployment system, business owners who are worried about having to close their doors for good, and seniors who are in

pain and unable to move forward with hip and knee replacements. Everyone has a unique story, and we want to hear it.” The website will allow stories to be categorized by subject. People can choose whether their experience applies to essential and non-essential business directives from the governor’s administration, difficulties securing needed unemployment benefits, interactions with state agencies, health care treatment, and more. The site will work in conjunction with the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic, a bipartisan panel of legislators from both the House and Senate. The committee will provide key legislative oversight by evaluating decision-making and preparedness both within the administration and state departments, while also providing a needed platform for people who have personally encountered issues with the governor’s unilateral decisions.

How to build a more energy-efficient home this summer With weather forecasts calling for a warmer than normal summer and social distancing encouraging us to spend more time at home, we could all benefit from boosting our home’s energy efficiency to save on energy bills. Here are some big and small changes that could help: START WITH A SOLID FOUNDATION. If you’re adding an extension to your home, a pool to your backyard or even planning a custom-built dream home, choose sustainable

materials that promote energy conservation. Instead of traditional wood-framing, consider insulated concrete forms. The eco-friendly alternative features thermal mass walls that can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 60 percent a year. WORK ON YOUR WINDOWS. Did you know that about 15 to 20 percent of your home’s surface is windows? This means any issues with them can have a major impact on your energy consumption. Take time to

caulk any gaps or air leaks, and consider upgrading to energy-efficient windows. Double-paned windows boost your insulation and help ensure your cooled, air conditioned air doesn’t escape. SWITCH TO OUTDOOR ENERGY SOURCES. Take advantage of the gorgeous weather to spend more time outside. Instead of cooking meals in your energy-intensive oven that also

heats up your home, break out the barbecue and enjoy dinner al fresco. You can also ease up on the clothes dryer by setting up a line and some pins in the backyard and use the wind and sun for drying power. INSTALL A SMART WEATHER STATION. Technology can help you make sure you’re consuming energy wisely. A smart thermostat is a great idea, but a smart

weather station can work with it and other devices to go a step beyond, programming them around current and predicted weather patterns. For example, it can ensure your scheduled sprinkler won’t go off in the middle of a downpour. BE MINDFUL OF YOUR REFRIGERATOR. If you aren’t careful, a lot of energy can be used by your fridge. First, make

sure the one in your kitchen (and basement) is a newer model, as older ones can cost hundreds more a year to power. Then, clear it out so the shelves and drawers aren’t overcrowded, which makes the fridge work harder to pump cool air throughout. Finally, if you let leftovers cool on the counter before putting them inside, your fridge will use less energy.

How home design trends are evolving for social distancing COVID-19 has brought changes to everything, and home design is no exception. Experts are expecting to see lasting impacts on everything from the materials we use to the rooms we prioritize. Check out these and other noteworthy trends: HOUSES OVER APARTMENTS: Many people who live in condos or apartments do so to be closer to the action - work, entertainment and shops - and never planned on spending much time at home. But the pandemic has changed that, and more people are going to want a home that offers plenty of room and outdoor space in case they need to self-isolate again. SELF-SUFFICIENCY: A hard lesson we've learned is that things and services we thought we could count on aren't necessarily a sure thing, so items that increase self-reliance will become very popular. Expect to see more homes with sources of energy like solar panels, sources of heat like fireplaces and stoves, and even urban and indoor gardens that allow you to grow your own produce. OUTDOOR LIVING: Between playgrounds closing and parks becoming overcrowded, many of us are turning to our balconies, patios and backyards for fresh air and nature. This means we're going to be investing more in our outdoor spaces, with functional kitchens, soothing water features, cozy firepits, and high-quality outdoor furniture to create a much-needed escape. HEALTHIER SPACES: Thanks to spending more time indoors and reprioritizing our health, we'll turn to design to help ensure our homes are safe and healthy for our families. We'll see a rise in products like water filtration systems as well as materials that improve indoor air quality. For new homes and additions, alternatives to wood-framing like insulated concrete forms, which offer improved ventilation for healthier indoor air quality and an environment that's less susceptible to mold. HOME OFFICE SPACE: Business experts are suggesting many companies will see that working from home is not only possible but offers tangible benefits, like saving money on office space rent. With working from home on the rise, creating a home office space that inspires productivity will be a major project many of us tackle. Luxury

home office furniture that feels chic and blends into your décor as well as ergonomic chairs and desks will see a major boost. CUSTOM AND QUALITY: With the hit to the economy, people are going to be buying less, but what they do buy will be better quality, while at the same time making an effort to support American businesses. When it comes to design, trends will shift to locally made furniture, custom-built homes and pieces and materials that stand the test of time.

REVIVAL AND REFORMATION

The Elijah message found in the three angels’ messages in Revelation 14:6-14 is a call for revival and

reformation. This message is given to the Laodicean church in Revelation 3:14-21. Laodicea means “Judging the people”. Laodicea is the seventh church in Revelation - the last one. The church era during the judgment hour message. Laodicea is lukewarm - not hot, not cold. The Bible says, “She who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.” (I Timothy 5:6) She was alive physically, but spiritually dead. Jesus said, “Let the dead bury their dead, you follow me.” (Matthew 8:22) Let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead. REVIVAL is a resurrection from spiritual death. Too many Christians are going through the forms of religion without the power of the indwelling Spirit. We need to awaken from our sleep and arise and be transformed by the Spirit of our God. The Bible also WARNS us of false religious revivals in the last days. Revelation 14:8-12 speaks of Babylon and the mark of the beast. Revelation 16:13 states, “And I saw three UNCLEAN SPIRITS like FROGS come out of the MOUTH of the beast, dragon, and FALSE prophet. For they are the spirits of DEVILS, working miracles ...” Men and women filled with devils acting like frogs: jumping and leaping everywhere, croaking and making noises, catching their prey with their tongues, but showing no change in their life of sin and rebellion against God in greed and sexual immorality. Isaiah 8:19 ,20 states, “And when they shall say unto you, look unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and that MUTTER: should not a people seek unto their God? For the living to the dead? To the LAW and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” True revival cannot take place without reformation. REFORMATION comes only in answer to prayer, confession of sin, and fasting. Reformation is a CHANGE in ideas, theories, habits, and practices. “O that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep al1 my commandments always, that it might be well with them and their children forever.” (Deuteronomy 5:29) Elijah’s message was that Ahab and Israel had forsaken the commandments of God. Revelation 14:6-14 is the call to Laodicea (God’s end time church) to FEAR God (by keeping His commandments), give GLORY to Him (by reform in our eating, drinking, and lifestyle habits) and worship the Creator on His Sabbath day. “For the hour of His judgment is come.” This is the call to revival, reformation, and restoration. Paul said in Ephesians 4 that reformed Christians will stop lying, control their tempers, stop stealing and share what they have with others, stop cursing and using bad language and putting people down among other things. Paul wrote to the Galatians, “Adultery, fornication... idolatry, witchcraft, hatred... murder, drunkenness, disorder... they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.’’ Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) Revelation 1:3 states, “BLESSED is he that reads, and they that hear the words of THIS prophecy, and KEEP (do) those things which are written therein: for the TIME IS AT HAND.” Lord willing, I will be having evangelistic meetings in September in Ionia to open up much, much more of what Revelation and the rest of the Bible reveals in clearer detail about our day. I hope you will plan to attend. God bless you, keep you, and guide you in all things through His Spirit.
