Passionate About Midwifery
B
ermuda Hospitals Board midwife Jennifer Ross originally set her sights on becoming an Emergency Room nurse, but that changed during her maternity rotation in nursing school. “I immediately fell
in love with labour and delivery,” she says. Unlike other areas of nursing, midwives are most often part of a joyful experience for patients and their families. Recognising this, Jennifer pursued
midwifery as her nursing speciality and hasn’t looked back since. Her role involves supporting women in labour and ensuring that both mothers and their babies are well cared for at every step. She also assists with patient assessments, which range from routine visits to urgent situations, such as preparing for a caesarean section or investigating unexpected symptoms. Jennifer also provides antenatal care, including managing inductions, closely monitoring high blood pressure during pregnancy, and supporting

mothers experiencing Hyperemesis Gravidarum—a severe form of morning sickness. To specialise in midwifery, candidates must first qualify as registered nurses. Jennifer advises: “Those interested should be prepared for a journey that is just as challenging as it is rewarding. Midwifery— and nursing in general—is about passion, resilience, and a genuine love for helping others during some of the most life-changing moments they’ll ever experience. It’s so much more than just a career.” She adds, “I truly love being a midwife—it’s a beautiful, fulfilling profession. I hope to see more Bermudians pursuing midwifery in the near future!” Your Future 2025
