ABOUT OUR AREA The Hornsby Shire region WISEMANS FERRY covers an area of 510 square kilometres, with LAUGHTONDALE nearly twothirds of its area comprising national park and bushland. The Shire includes land from Eastwood in the south to Wisemans Ferry in the MAROOTA north and Brooklyn in the east.

The traditional owners of the Shire were the Aboriginal people of the Darug and Guringai language groups. Council continues to work FOREST GLEN with these traditional landholder groups to support the celebration of Aboriginal history and culture in the Shire.

European settlement in the Shire dates from 1794 when the first land grants were made along the ARCADIA Hawkesbury River, with land MIDDLE DURAL GALSTON used mainly for farming. The opening of the Newcastle and North Shore railway lines in the 1890s resulted in Hornsby CBD becoming a railway town and a DURAL major centre.
