JOURNALISM

TELL STORIES THAT MATTER.

Launch your career in the media capital of the world with access to the most renowned news outlets. Develop strong communication, writing, and critical thinking skills while gaining expertise in news writing and reporting, shooting and editing video, digital storytelling, podcasting, social media, and using the latest industry tools and software. Hofstra’s journalism program is fully accredited, distinguishing it as one of the finest in the country.

Sports Media concentration courses include Broadcast News Writing and Reporting, Sports Reporting, and Television Sports Reporting and Producing.


MEDIA STUDIES

MASTER THE TRENDS THAT SHAPE YOUR FUTURE. Discover the aspects of media that most interest you and build an in-depth understanding of how media works and how it impacts society. A degree in Mass Media Studies is a gateway to a rewarding career in a wide variety of fields such as law, management, politics, journalism, and education.

WE TEACH CRAFT. WE INSPIRE VISION. Pursue your passion for the art of filmmaking, learn the craft, and develop your unique creative vision. Study the great filmmakers and apply what you learn to write, direct, produce, design, and edit your own projects. BFA, WRITING FOR THE SCREEN SCRIPTED SUCCESS STARTS HERE.

Prepare to stand out in any writers’ room, starting inside the Herbert School’s own dedicated space for scriptwriting, teleplays, and screenplays. The BFA in Writing for the Screen provides you with the necessary tools for writing across all platforms. As the demand for new material continues to increase, start crafting your own portfolio in one of the most exciting and creative fields in media.


BFA, FILMMAKING

FOCUS ON YOUR BIG PICTURE. A BFA in Filmmaking guides you toward the complete process of creating a film. Building on a foundation of production and writing, and complemented by film history, theory, and aesthetics — you’ll receive an in-depth education in your specific field of interest. Take a wide range of specialized courses, whether your interest is cinematography, sound design, editing, screenwriting or directing.

Located within the Herbert School, WRHU Radio Hofstra University is dedicated to providing pre-professional broadcast training. Representing more than 60 years of broadcast excellence, WRHU’s impressive alumni span leadership and talent positions across the media industry.


WRHU 88.7 FM

AWARD-WINNING COLLEGE RADIO.

The multiple Marconi Award-winning station has been home to the New York Islanders for more than nine years, and it is the first student-run radio station in the United States to have an exclusive broadcast agreement with a major league sports franchise. WRHU has also received first place rankings from The Princeton Review, College Media Association, and BestColleges.com.


Top-tier technology is available to students in all Herbert School programs. WRHU studios are capable of creating professional audio, video, and social media content. The NewsHub is a state-of-the-art digital newsroom and collaborative space. The multimedia audio studio and control room serves as an on-air training classroom where students can mix live music and talk shows.


Production spaces, such as the three-story, 3,750 square-foot Studio A, and Studio B for news production, feature 4K/UHD broadcast cameras. A post-production facility for film and TV includes an editing classroom, screening room, color correction suite, and Foley/ADR audio studio. Students also have access to industry standard field and mobile equipment for coursework and projects.

MASTER MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING.
