merican scientist Edmund Schulman’s groundbreaking tree-ring research in the 1950s led to his discovery of a bristlecone pine more than 4,800 years old, proving that the gnarled, diminutive pines are the oldest non-clonal trees on Earth—not the giant sequoias, as previously thought. Native to the American West, these tenacious trees thrive at a high elevation in extremely poor soil and with limited rainfall. Their growing season can be a mere forty-five days each year, yet they persist for millennia. By studying the planet’s oldest trees, Schulman hoped to capture a precise record of Earth’s climatic shifts. The bristlecone pines are ideal for this research because of their longevity and sensitivity to environmental changes. The bristlecone’s wood decomposes extremely slowly, which has allowed dendrochronologists (scientists who study tree rings) to cross-date cores extracted from both living and fallen specimens. The result is a chronology extending back 11,500 years—nearly to the last ice age—the longest continual climatic tree-ring record on the planet.
