This was taken during the summer of 2002. From the left are Gretchen, Martin, Bethany, Christoph (HoashiErhardt), Annie, Walt, and Wendy (Hoashi-Erhardt). Our family was at HKIS as students and teachers between 1982 and 1991.

HKIS between 1982 to 1991. My father Walt taught chemistry at HKIS and was the chairman of the high school science department for part of that time. I enrolled at Valparaiso University, and emerged from my cocoon as a chemistry major in 1996. The chemistr y depar tment at the University of Illinois then consented to take me on as a PhD student, where I spent my time coming up with new ways to make computer chips out of rocks. After receiving my PhD in 2001, I spent eight glorious months as an intern at Tillers International in Kalamazoo, Michigan, applying my newfound knowledge to the field of subsistence agriculture. In 2002, I joined the faculty of Valparaiso University. I had a wonderful time with my former HKIS classmates at the Class of 1991 10 Year Reunion in New York two years ago, and encourage you to let me know if anyone would like to get together for a weekend in the Chicago area. It’s been great seeing Jim Handrich and Bill Wehrenberg during their annual visits to Valparaiso, and we here at VU are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Jan We s t r i ck when she moves
