Kiarostami as we have never really known him before, despite the transformative power of his many movies. Filmmaker and close friend Samadian avoids the talking heads of so many artistic memoirs to offer more candid clips of Kiarostami the man: lover of poetry, convivial with friends, engaging landscapes on and off screen, laughing with other artists. The artist and visionary emerges more clearly but so does a loving, wondrous man whom we will miss now as much as the auteur.
Portuguese master director Manoel de Oliveira died at age 106 in 2015, with a life and career that had nearly spanned the entire development of cinema itself. How can we understand this career? Taking a novel approach, former protégé João Botelho not only explores the lessons from decades of brilliant films but essays the completion of Oliveira’s final and incomplete film, The Girl with the Gloves as a final tribute in black and white silence to a master’s centurial career.

What better place than a film festival to celebrate the sheer magic of cinema? Sarin’s engagement with cinematographers poses the question of how these films come to be, with cinematographers as varied as Vittorio Storaro (The Last Emperor), Gordon Willis (The Godfather Trilogy), Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men) and many others. Of course, with cinema, the more we understand the processes involved, the more we actually celebrate the magic and see classic films with new appreciation.
攝影大師韋莫斯席蒙,曾與史匹堡、羅拔艾特曼、活地 亞倫等名導合作,為米高契敏奴的《獵鹿者》(1978)與 《天堂之門》(37 屆)掌鏡,憑《第三類接觸》(1977) 奪奧斯卡最佳攝影獎,更是六十年代「新荷里活」重要 功臣。席蒙去年初逝世,生前遇上崇拜他的後輩菲蒙, 在鏡頭前分享光影美學心得,留下生命綻放到極致的親 密閃光。還有伊莎貝雨蓓、《兇綫》(1981)尊特拉華達 與南茜艾倫、《末代皇帝溥儀》攝影師史托拉盧、捷克新 浪潮導演艾雲巴薩等亮相細說從前。

A look behind the lens of the New Hollywood through the work and words of one of its central figures. Escaping the Hungarian uprising of 1956 and working his way to the top in American cinema, Zsigmond’s camera created the look of films as diverse – and stunning – as Deliverance, Sugarland Express, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, McCabe & Mrs. Miller and Heaven’s Gate, working with Spielberg, Altman, Cimino and many others. And now we learn how he did it.
From Rossellini’s Rome, Open City to Antonioni’s BlowUp, the greatest films in cinema history are indebted to Carlo Di Palma, the man behind the camera. Starting as an assistant in Visconti’s Ossessione, he emerged as the masterful cinematographer of the Italian neorealist cinema. In this loving documentary produced by his wife, a galaxy of luminaries including Bernardo Bertolucci, Wim Wenders, Ken Loach and Woody Allen pay homage to the virtuoso.
