Emile Antoine Bourdelle was one of the foremost creators of monumental sculpture at the beginning of the 20th century. He initally trained in the studio of Jules Dalou and by 1893 was working as an assistant to Auguste Rodin, for whom he worked for fifteen years. Bourdelle’s energetic treatment of his sculptures’ surfaces reveal the influence of the older master; however, by 1900 his work embraced an elegant simplification of form and taut surface, as well as an overtly heroic and monumental conception of the figure. Bourdelle “preferred the architectural and spiritualized conception of Egyptian sculpture and Greek art of the archaic period to the idealism and the masterful and luminous modelling of the age of phydias. He appreciated the ‘ardent wisdom’ of Romanesque and Gothic churches more than the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.”1

Bourdelle achieved his first great success when he exhibited a cast of Héraklès, archer in the Salon de la Société National des Beaux-Arts of 1910. The sculpture was commissioned in April 1909 by the financier and philanthropist Gabriel Thomas, as a single copy in giltbronze. The artist was inspired by the sixth labor of Hercules, in which the hero slays a flock of man-eating birds that had gathered near the town of Stymphalos in Arcadia, harrassing the countryside and its people. Doyen parigot, a career cavalry officer and an athlete with an imposing physique, modeled for the work. Despite the officer’s physical prowess, the pose proved such a challenge that he was only able to hold it for a few minutes at a time. parigot tracked the lenght of each session, which totaled over nine hours before the sculpture’s completion. Bourdelle modified the head of the model at the request of parigot, who was afraid that the public expsure might harm his image and career. The head is instead a variation of the artist’s earlier scultpure from 1900, Tête d’Apollon.

The present work was critically acclaimed from the time of its first public presentation in 1910. The French writer Charles Morice raves about the sculpture in the Mercure de France from May 1, 1910 stating, “The unbelievably audacious movement of this archer balancing himself in mid-air, supported against the ridge of a rock, that human form that even appears to leap in its immobility, that summary, precise, full and vibrant modelling is one of the most prodigious endeavors of living art. Here realism borders on idealism. A model may have sat for this anatomy, but none could have given it this countenance or this movement. Bourdelle’s art marks the transition from the long period of enslavement by reality, which we have experienced, to the new, necessary phase in which the artist will review in his heart all the secrets of nature and reflect them in a creation more faithful to general truth and at the same time revealing his own persona, intimate truth.”2
