Estamos erosionando los cimientos de nuestras economías, seguridad alimentaria, salud y calidad de vida a nivel internacional”, sostiene Sir Robert Watson, presidente de la Plataforma de Política Científica sobre Biodiversidad y Ecosistemas (IPBES). Un millón de especies están actualmente en peligro de extinción, la cifra más alta en toda la historia de la humanidad en cualquier otro momento de la historia de la humanidad. “Ecosistemas, especies, poblaciones silvestres, variedades locales y plantas domesticadas y animales están encogiéndose,
deteriorándose o desapareciendo. La telaraña esencial, interconectada de la vida sobre la Tierra está haciéndose más pequeña y cada vez más frágil”, lamentó el profesor Josef Settele.
Pero no todas son malas noticias. El informe sostiene que no es tarde para frenar o incluso empezar a revertir estas tendencias preocupantes, pero sólo si empezamos en este mismo momento en todos los niveles, desde las
pequeñas comunidades hasta la escala global. Se trata pues de sumar voluntades para llevar a cabo lo que el informe denomina como un “cambio transformativo”, es decir una reorganización fundamental de los sistemas mundiales a través de factores tecnológicos, económicos y sociales incluyendo nuevos paradigmas, metas y valores, según explica Watson. Entre las opciones: promover las mejores prácticas agrícolas, manejo pesquero con base en esquemas sustentables, colaboración en el uso del agua, mejor acceso a áreas verdes en comunidades pobres, aliento a la producción y consumo de alimentos orgánicos, así como la participación de las comunidades indígenas. Es un lugar común afirmar que sólo se puede resolver un problema si se reconoce su existencia. El informe de IPBES es un llamado de auxilio, pero también es un llamado a la acción. PATRICK J. MCGRATH RETIRES AS BISHOP OF SAN JOSE Diocese of San Jose

AN JOSE, May 1, 2019 – On May 1, 2019 the Holy Father accepted the request to retire of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath after 20 years as Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose. The announcement was made public by the Holy See in Rome. Every Bishop of the Catholic Church must submit a request for retirement to the Vatican as they approach their 75th birthday. Bishop McGrath will turn 74 in June.
serving as Coadjutor Bishop in San Jose. "The years have flown by," said Bishop McGrath. "I thank everyone for their encouragement and their support, for instilling in me the joy of serving the Lord and His people, and for imparting to me the spirit of gratitude that should always distinguish our lives."

Toribio Romo González(1920-1928) nació en Santa Ana de Guadalupe, Jalostotitlán, Jalisco, México. Sus padres y demás familia se ocupan en labores agrícolas. Desde muy niño se observó su vocación hacia el sacerdocio. Su hermana María siempre le apoyó y gracias a ella se animó a ingresar al Seminario Auxiliar de San Juan de los Lagos. Ya en el seminario y siendo un adolescente comenzó su gran obra: auxiliaba a los enfermos, procuraba alimentos a los más necesitados, era compasivo con los animales y brindaba protección a los huérfanos, inmigrantes y desamparados. A los 21 años de edad ingresó al Seminario de Guadalajara. En 1927 siendo ya sacerdote, fue trasladado a la Parroquia de Tequila, en esos años había estallado la guerra de los cristeros, las autoridades civiles y militares perseguían con severidad a los sacerdotes, se les acusaba de exaltar a las masas en contra de la opresión militar y del gobierno.

Tequila era un municipio peligroso para vivir siendo párroco o sacerdote. Santo Toribio se las ingenió para celebrar misas clandestinas y atender a los fieles católicos en una fábrica abandonada.
Su hermano Román que también se había ordenado como sacerdote estaba con él y su hermana María les ayudaba a ambos en su misión religiosa. En 1928 tuvo que esconderse pues su vida corría peligro, le buscaban para asesinarlo, una noche sus verdugos dieron con su escondite y le acribillaron. Estuvo en agonía por varios minutos y antes de morir le confesó a sus hermanos que había ofrecido su vida a cambio de un cese de hostilidades contra los sacerdotes y la fe católica. Santo Toribio murió como mártir de la fe cristiana el 25 de febrero de 1928.

anta Clara County, CA -The County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Services Department kicked off mental health month by recognizing community members who have made an extraordinary difference in the lives of people with behavioral health challenges. For the first time a Media Community Hero was awarded. It went to Ed Clendaniel, San Jose Mercury News Editor, who followed the Recommendations on Safe Reporting on Suicides in his powerful editorial following the 2018 celebrity suicides. Mr. Clendaniel wrote an opinion piece about his own brother’s suicide, which included important information that the safe reporting guidelines recommend. Recommendations that were followed included providing hot line resource numbers so people can get help, addressing the issue of stigma around talking about suicide and tackling the complexity of suicides. Another 9 Community Hero Awards were presented and 10 law enforcement officers (see attached) were recognized for their work as Crisis Intervention Team members. Crisis Intervention Teams are trained to recognize and address the needs of people with mental illness in

EATTLE — While the Northwest has seen massive infernos in recent years, a new report shows its forests actually are experiencing a historical deficit of fires. That deficit could be fueling recent, dangerous wildfire seasons. The study conducted by The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Forest Service and University of Idaho shows only one-tenth of forest acreage in Washington and Oregon burned between 1984 and 2015, compared with a century earlier. However, 36 percent of those fires were high severity, compared with about 6% - 9% historically. Ryan Haugo, the study's lead author and conservation science director at The Nature Conservancy in Oregon, said with
the added pressure of climate change, the need to better manage forests is urgent. "We need to look for opportunities in which we can have the fire that is going to occur burn at times and under conditions which are both safer to our communities, safer to our health, and more able to restore and replicate the natural ecological processes,” Haugo said. This week begins a two-week period of prescribed fire training in central Washington, which is used to rid the forest of fuel for the most intense wildfires. Historically, low- and mediumseverity fires played this role. The study found the fire deficit is worse in eastern Washington and Oregon, where only 3 percent of the historical acreage has burned. "We're either going to have it in the times when we want it to happen through prescriptions, or it's going to happen in larger, uncontrollable crown fires, as we've seen in the last few years,” Bakker said. Washington Department of Natural Resources forest health scientist Derek Churchill said a combination of good fire suppression and removing fire-resistant trees has made forests more vulnerable. He said prescribed and managed fires are key, and also noted mechanical thinning of the debris that fuels those fires is critical to maintain forests. "This study really quantified the amount of treatment it's going to take to do that maintenance over time,” Churchill said. “It gave us an idea in a really compelling way.” Haugo noted the study is not advocating a return to historical numbers, which could be dangerous to communities and also because many fire-resistant trees are missing from forests due to past management decisions. EATTLE – En un estudio reciente se destaca la importancia de la gestión de bosques y el reconocimiento del papel natural que juega el fuego en los bosques del Noroeste. Mientras que el Noroeste ha visto infiernos masivos en años recientes, un nuevo reporte indica que sus bosques están experimentando realmente una reducción histórica de incendios. Ese déficit puede estar alimentando temporadas recientes de peligrosos fuegos forestales. El estudio (en inglés), desarrollado por “The Nature Conservancy”, el Servicio Forestal de los Estados Unidos y la Universidad de Idaho, muestra que sólo un décimo de los acres de bosques de Washington y Oregon ardieron durante 1984 y 2015, comparado con un siglo atrás. De cualquier manera, 36 por ciento de esos incendios fueron muy severos, comparados con un 6 ó 9 por ciento histórico. I’m sure you have your own definition (it’s personal), but here’s mine: Art cannot be ignored. Art is not to be confused with craft (which may contain the work of artists). Craft can easily be ignored.
IBM WATSON BEAT Watson Beat is a cognitive cloud-based app being developed by machine learning and artificial intelligence expert Janani Mukundan, who teamed up with Richard Daskas, a composer and professional musician, to teach Watson about rhythm, pitch, and instrumentation, as well as the differences in genres. Watson’s neural network then helps artists (like Alex da Kid) create original compositions.
The distinction between “art” and “craft” is critical. One has magical qualities that touch your soul; the other is just “nicely done.” That said, neither art nor craft should ever be confused with technical skill; just because you can type 120 words per minute does not mean you can write a novel.

The Verge article explored the evolution of human/AI copyright ownership. “What happens if AI software trained solely on Beyoncé creates a track that sounds just like her?” It is also the wrong question. Every human learns music by doing everything humanly possible to mimic other musicians (starting with their own music teachers). How would artificial musical intelligence learn music without “listening” to other musicians? And, other than attempting to create a musical Jurassic Park, why would you ever train any musician (AI or human) on only one other musician’s work? A quick answer might be to capitalize on the creative genius of one particular musical star, like Beyoncé. What you may not know is that there are literally hundreds (probably thousands) of human composers and producers who can convincingly create a track that even Beyoncé would think she wrote, performed, and produced. Great music is everywhere. Sadly, it’s not the part of the music business that actually sells music. Beyoncé is a package that includes brains, marketing, business, organizational, social, and human skills all wrapped up in a beautiful bundle of extraordinary talent. Her business acumen, style, smile, manner, musicianship, dancing, and relationships all contribute to her success. If you created the music in a vacuum – no pictures, no dancing, no fashion, no social media, no power couple, no hype – just music, no one would care that any particular song sounded like her songs sound. In other words, if I do a perfect Beyoncé knock-off and put it on YouTube, there are absolutely no guarantees of success. In fact, because it would be so close to something we’ve heard a lot of, it would probably have less chance of finding an audience. WHAT ARE WE REALLY DEALING WITH? Can AI create “real” music? Has been asked and answered. David Cope is Dickerson Emeriti Professor and teaches theory and composition at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has worked on many different music creation algorithms (perhaps his most famous is EMI – Experiments in Musical Intelligence). Cope used EMI to compose Zodiac, twelve short works for string orchestra in the style of Vivaldi. Here’s a link to one movement called Taurus. This was done back in 2012 – all musical AI has improved exponentially since that time.

It is there to evoke a feeling. Sometimes, there’s a “sonic signature” (aka sonic branding) – the new fancy words for “the hook.”

RCATA, Calif. - The California condor soon may return to the skies in northwestern California - but conservation groups are calling for action to improve their chances of survival. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, along with the Yurok Tribe, have proposed reintroducing the condor to the northern part of its historic range, which includes Oregon and northern Nevada. However, Pamela Flick, senior California representative for the group Defenders of Wildlife, said the states need some policy changes to pave the way. "Defenders of Wildlife remains concerned about releasing condors into a landscape rife with threats to their continued survival," she said, "from the familiar threat of lead poisoning to the emerging threat of rodenticide poisoning."
The public can weigh in on the federal environmental assessment of the condor reintroduction program Thursday morning in Klamath and at an evening meeting in Arcata. The California condor almost went extinct in 1985, with only 22 birds remaining. But there are now 290 birds in southern California and the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, thanks to successful reintroduction programs there. RCATA, California. El cóndor de California pronto podrá regresar a los cielos en el noroeste de California, pero los grupos de conservación están pidiendo acciones para mejorar sus posibilidades de supervivencia.
El cóndor de California casi se extinguió en 1985, con solo 22 aves restantes. Pero ahora hay 290 aves en el sur de California y en la península de Baja California en México, gracias a los exitosos programas de reintroducción allí.
El Servicio de Pesca y Vida Silvestre de los Estados Unidos, junto con la Tribu Yurok, han propuesto reintroducir el cóndor en la parte norte de su área de distribución histórica, que incluye Oregón y el norte de Nevada. apachula, Mexico - Stepped-up surveillance on Mexico's southern border has not halted the stream of migrants, mainly from Central America, who have chosen to travel north by secondary routes in search of their American dream. After four years during which migrants had ceased to travel on the freight train known as "the Beast," hundreds of women, men and children are riding it once more, with migrants waiting day and night for its departure. Others have chosen to skirt the Pacific coast or hike through the hills, risking capture by human traffickers. The traffickers transport them in shabby old trucks racing along mountainous routes where they might get in crashes like those that occurred recently, and then be left to their own devices. According to the National Migration Institute (INM), 20,596 foreigners applied for humanitarian visas on Mexico's southern border during the month of April, of whom 14,970 were returned to their countries of origin. These included Haitians, Cubans and Central Americans who did not fulfill the requirements. Meanwhile undocumented individuals have escaped from the migration centers where they were being held, as occurred in two incidents recently, one in Tapachula and the other at Comitan in the southeastern Mexican state of Chiapas, where hundreds of Cubans and Central Americans fled the installations in a mad scramble. Many Cubans have accused the INM of violating human rights and that in the Tapachula facility the living conditions are unbearable. At the same time, overpopulation makes these centers unhealthy, medical attention is insufficient, and there are constant outbreaks of violence. The latest escape from the Tapachula center occurred this Sunday before dawn, when, according to the INM, a group of Cubans "promoted a non-authorized exit from the installations."

"Institute personnel avoided the confrontation and acted prudently. In that incident, 90 people left the migrant center without authorization," the institute stated, adding that "minor damages were inflicted on the building and the INM is bringing the corresponding criminal charges." Following the escapes, the INM is continuing search operations plus the strengthening of security inside and outside the facilities.
In view of the deportation of their compatriots, some Cubans who have been stranded for some four months on the border are seeking asylum in Mexico, fearing they will be put on trial if they return home. Meanwhile, social organizations like Voces Mesoamericanas have recommended that the government change its migration strategy so as not to repeat the old ways of favoring persecution and criminalization of people in need of protection. In a statement they expressed "a profound rejection" of that approach and demanded an end to "the strategy of cataloging the 'uncontrolled streams of migrants' as the main threat and risk to national security, because it is a generic, ambiguous and directly criminalizing charge against migrants and applicants for asylum." They argue that "this view contributes to the justification of authoritarian acts that can go so far as serious violations of human rights like torture and forced disappearance, while at the same time arousing xenophobic feelings and actions by society.
