TRUMP'S CONFIRMED FEDERAL JUDGES, CONFIRM FEARS

he devastating harm already done by Trump's judges such as Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch will support and allow GOP gerrymandering. In each and every gerrymandered jurisdiction an extra effort must be planned and made if Democratic or Independent candidates are to be elected. This requires that a very high number of registered voters, especially those who do not vote regularly, must be encouraged to get out to vote (GOTV). During the two years since taking office, President Trump, aided and supported by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, powerful rightwing ideologues at the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation, alongside DARK MONEY spenders like the Judicial Crisis Network, Trump has managed to place two far-right nominees onto the Supreme Court in addition to dozens more at other federal courts. “People For the American
Way” (PFAW) has been actively monitoring all Trump's judicial nominees to determine the impact on the rights and protections that millions of Americans rely on. Many court decisions have become norms integrated into our modern society's accepted practices. Quietly, all these court rulings will become much more conservative in the application of existing laws of this land. Unfortunately, the harm that is caused by these Trump judge's personal logic and values will reverberate for decades to come. Sadly, too few citizens are informed enough to tell their Senators to reject Trump's dangerous judicial nominees! While it's crucial to understand the lasting implications that these judges and their rulings will have on the trajectory of our country, it's equally important to ensure that we hold those senators accountable for voting to confirm these dangerous Trump's judges. To that end, PFAW has developed resources to help progressive advocates (like you) ensure that senators who supported any of these far-right judges know we will remember they voted for
judges who are willing to: a) Derail Medicare For All legislation (health care for millions); b) Impose severe restrictions on Women's Right to Choose; c) Restrict or weaken any environmental protection laws and regulations; d) Deny immigrants their rights and delay having legal status; e) Align alongside with corporate special interests; and more. We, The People can't afford this extreme right-wing takeover of our courts. Not only is the health and wellbeing of all residents depend on stopping it, but also the appropriate ownership and use of this nation's abundant natural resources must be protected and directed in a way that promotes the greater good for all of us. on el despido fulminante de la Secretaria de Seguridad Interna Kirstjen Nielsen, el retiro de la nominación de Ronald Vitello para dirigir la Oficina de Migración y Aduanas (ICE) y el empujón a otros altos funcionarios de seguridad nacional, el presidente Donald Trump dejó en claro que su fracaso para contener la crisis migratoria en la frontera es propiedad de su gobierno y resultado de políticas erráticas que complicaron el problema. La purga de altos funcionarios confirma asimismo que el presidente Trump desea, nuevamente, convertir el delicado asunto de la seguridad fronteriza en la punta de lanza de su campaña de reelección en las elecciones presidenciales del 2020. El presidente que no ha logrado su promesa de construir un “hermoso
muro” fronterizo, ahora sólo podrá venderles a sus votantes la idea de que por lo menos hizo el intento. Todo lo cual hace posible anticipar, lamentablemente, un endurecimiento de las políticas migratorias para el resto de la administración Trump, con la llegada de funcionarios a posiciones claves en al aparato de seguridad fronteriza que, o se identifican con la línea dura del presidente en materia de control migratorio, o tienen una disposición orgánica a decirle que sí a todas las directrices de la Casa Blanca, racionales o no. No va a importar que algunas de las decisiones ejecutivas más draconianas de la Casa Blanca sigan siendo bloqueadas por las cortes estadounidenses. El presidente podrá hacer campaña enarbolando la banderita de la emergencia nacional, de los peligros que entraña para el país una supuesta “invasión” de caravanas de
migrantes empobrecidos y culpará de todo a los demócratas, a México o a los países centroamericanos. Apenas el lunes, el Juez de Distrito de San Francisco Richard Seeborg, puso en suspenso temporalmente la polémica política de Trump bautizada como “Quédense en México”, a través de la cual los solicitantes de asilo político procedentes de Centroamérica que habían recibido una cita oficial para una audiencia migratoria tenían que esperar su turno en territorio mexicano. Se trató de un serio revés judicial para un presidente que viajó a la frontera, no para supervisar el estado de cientos de familias migrantes que habían sido dejadas a la intemperie debajo de un puente, sino para llevar el mensaje de que Estados Unidos estaba “lleno” y que no podía aceptar a nadie más. Los tribunales le recordaron a Trump que el poder
ejecutivo no está por encima de las leyes. El pánico es un mal consejero. La conducta del presidente en el despido serial de algunos de sus más cercanos colaboradores sugiere que la Casa Blanca entró a una espiral descendiente conforme se enfila a las elecciones del 2020. ZACH GALIFIANAKIS: THE ART OF VOICING PUPPETS “Missing Link" star talks about breathing life into a 3D-printed puppet for Laika Studios’ newest adventure

issing Link is a new stop-motion film starring Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana,and Zach Galifianakis. The story revolves around an 8-foot-tall, 630 lbs. creature from deep in the Pacific Northwestern woods named Mr. Link, (voiced by Galifianakis) who wants to find his common ancestors in the mystical and harmonious land of Shangri La. Over the years Laika Studios, based in Portland Oregon, has developed and refined a technically advanced process in order to create one of the oldest forms of animation on screen. The studio 3D-prints its puppets and hand sews all the clothing and fabrics, as well as builds the sets in their studio. A week's worth of work results in 2.5 to 3 seconds of footage. Recently Galifianakis answered some of our questions regarding the film from the studio that brought stop-motion animation into the mainstream movie viewing audience with 2009’s “Coraline", and most recently, the visual feast that was “Kubo and the Two Strings”. Galifianakis’ starring role in "Missing Link" isn't his
first voice acting role but it did bring him a different perspective because of the type of work that he saw being made, different from other major animation studios in the world. Galifianakis reflects on his time working on the film below. Hey Zach thank you for the time. To start off I wanted to know how you “found" the voice of your character Mr. Link? How'd you figure out what he would sound like? Well with these animated things you have to ask a lot of questions. I think what we kind of concluded was, the attitude of the voice is more important to the director than me changing or giving a weird accent or something like that. It’s the attitude of the voice that we talked about. And, this is a character that lives in the woods, and he’s really not been affected by the outside world. I think if we as humans had never left the woods, we’d probably be sweet and innocent - and wide-eyed a lot of times. I think that’s just how I went with it. [Mr. Link] didn’t have a lot of negativity around him because he was in the woods so we wanted him to be a very nice creature. Could you tell me where we find your character at
the start of the film, and what his motivations are to essentially start the story?
working on this film and you drive away after you’ve done your two sets.
What happens is he wants to know what it’s like outside of the woods and so there’s this letter written to Sir Lionel Frost, who is played by Hugh Jackman, and that’s kind of the initial storyline.
Then you come back a month later and they've done a ton of work. Then you start seeing the animation, it becomes more layered, it becomes more detailed. Then they show you these puppets and you start to see this magic happen from your voice, and the true remarkable feat about places like Laika that has a real richness to it. You know a lot of these computer animated movies are cold, they don’t have that depth to them like this movie.
We’re going to see this guy [as] a fish out of water. This movie is a lot of things but one thing is the fish out of water, which is always a nice device. So yeah, you have this character who yearns to find creatures like himself and in that journey we kind of learn that you can find family anywhere. When doing the voice acting for a stop motion film, where they begin the puppeteering filming process after the voices are done. So how long did you spend on the project in total? Probably three and a half to four years doing just the voice stuff. And it’s not a lot, they didn’t call me in, it was sporadic through those years. The tricky thing is trying to remember how you did it. The voicing for it is all out of order, again you just have to ask a lot of questions to try to get caught up to [Laika Studios], because they have been doing a ton of work since you’re last recording session. There’s hundreds of people that are
So, I think the way they do their movies adds a more artistic bend to it. You have to consider that when doing the voice, it’s not just jokes. You need to have a little bit of depth there, and warmth, because the animation is warm and deep. How would you differentiate the acting involved in animation and live-action? Is there a difference in how you approach it? It’s just different. One is not harder for me than the other. It’s just a different way of doing it. You use your Imagination a lot more. “Okay, so where am I? Are there trees nearby? How far are the other characters from me when I’m talking to them? Is the wind blowing?”
So you don’t have the physical space that you do when you’re doing a liveaction thing, so you just have to use your mind and paint that picture while you’re doing the voice. Or, just ask a lot of questions like I do. Or do both. I just try to do a lot of imagining and sometimes I’m wrong, and the director has to tell me “No, no, no, that’s not where we are right now.” It’s just a lot of back and forth, and being able to communicate what is needed on that day. Going back to the differences between digital and physical stop motion animation, there are giant stages at Laika with intricately modeled sets for “Missing Link” with the puppets themselves being crafted with such detail and scrutiny. What do you have to say about this studio and seeing your character come to life with such a process? The work they’re doing is interesting. I think because of the time that’s passed - [I] work on it a couple hours, then six months go by, you work on it a few more hours then like I said earlier you get to see the real work that’s being done. There’s hundreds of people working on this while I’m not thinking about it, because I’m not working on it right now. So that’s an interesting thing, to see this kind of complete
movie where you’ve added your voice to but then it’s so much more than just the voices to me. To me the voices are second class citizens! It’s the animation to me. What ultimately did you enjoy the most about working on “Missing Link”? Chris the director, he’s got a wit about him that I enjoy, and i just like that these are artists, and not just “hollywood folk”. You know they’re in Portland, they’re real artists and you don’t see that a lot in the moviemaking process. You see people that know how to do computer stuff, but you don’t see a lot of art. So there’s a lot of art in this picture and i think that's missing in a lot of films - the actual art part, so I’m very proud of it. Why should folks go watch “Missing Link”? My whole feeling of how people walk from the theater to their cars after they see the movie is I just want people to be in a better mood. I think people should go see this movie because it's a really artful, beautifully filmed move that has a story i think we could all relate to. “Missing Link" is in theaters now. Last year alone, consumers nationwide lodged more than 3,000 complaints with BBB against ticket brokers and event ticket sales companies. The leading cause for complaints were problems with refunds and exchanges. Common complaints include being unable to obtain refunds, poor customer service, and hidden fees. Buying jerseys, hats, and other gear can also lead to issues. According to the BBB Risk Index, online purchase scams were the second riskiest scam of 2018 and the riskiest scam

for people between the ages of 34-44. Furthermore, clothing purchases were one of the most common online purchase scams. The number of online purchase scams submitted to BBB Scam Tracker in 2018 rose dramatically to 10,450 reports, up 124% from 4,655 in 2017. ey Anzaldúa nunca cruzó la frontera. La frontera lo cruzó a él. Su familia lleva viviendo en lo que hoy es el sur de Texas desde 1750, décadas antes de que se fundaran los Estados Unidos de América. Desde entonces, la pérdida de tierra ha sido incesante. Y ahora, debido a la obstinación de Donald Trump de construir su muro medieval, la sangría se ha intensificado. “El gobierno federal siempre nos ha tratado como a conquistados, incluso ahora”, dice Anzaldúa. “En años recientes, la tierra que nos queda, nos la han tratado de quitar también”. Prácticamente todas las propiedades que él y su familia todavía poseen se encuentran en el filo de la frontera, y al igual que el resto de los dueños fronterizos, están a merced de una administración obsesionada con construir el muro. Según el Rep. Will Hurd, un republicano que representa al mayor distrito fronterizo, más de 1000 propietarios tejanos están en
peligro de que el gobierno federal confisque sus tierras. “Ya les hemos negado el acceso”, dice Anzaldúa. “Se querellaron contra nosotros en corte federal, el juez nos ordenó que les dejáramos entrar y ya han completado los estudios topográficos sin nuestro permiso”. Trump ya les advirtió que “si no logramos un trato, les confiscaremos la tierra”. Este “robo”, como lo llama Anzaldúa, se basa en las leyes de dominio soberano, por las cuales el gobierno fuerza la venta de terrenos privados para la construcción de obras públicas. anulado decenas de leyes para la construcción del muro, incluyendo la Ley de Política Ambiental Nacional, la Ley de Especies en Peligro, la Ley de Agua Limpia, la Ley de Aire limpio, hasta un total de 48 estatutos. “En mi opinión, están violando la Quinta Enmienda de la Constitución porque no nos otorgan debido proceso. Aquí no nos tratan igual. ¿Es porque somos hispanos?”, se pregunta este veterano que sirvió con honor a su país en Vietnam. Este ambiente de injusticia se acentúa con lacreciente militarización de la frontera. Un grupo de veteranos de guerra del Military Outdoors del Sierra Club, visitó recientemente la región para presenciar por sí mismos los efectos de la política inmigratoria de Trump y su ilegal emergencia nacional. “Yo sé lo fácil que es exagerar este tema tan cargado emocionalmente”, dice Rob Vessels, representante de rango de Military Outdoors y veterano de las guerras de Irak y Afganistán. “Pero la frontera
está definitivamente militarizada. La Patrulla Fronteriza tiene mejor armamento y equipo personal que yo tenía en Afganistán, lo cual es exasperante”. Vessels, quien ha encontrado en su contacto con la naturaleza una terapia en su transición del campo de batalla a la vida civil, muestra su indignación por el robo de tierras que está ocurriendo en la frontera. “No se puede separar la justicia ambiental de la justicia social y racial”, dice. “Están construyendo el muro y robando tierra de comunidades m i n o r i t a r i a s e indígenas y separándoles de sus amigos y familias”.
