THE ROLE OF TRUTH, HONESTY AND INTEGRITY BECAME EVIDENT
Hilbert Morales, EL OBSERVADOR Mainstream Media has focused upon the testimony of President Trump's lawyer having 10 years of client-personal lawyer relationship. Michael Cohen testified for over 30 hours during the Congressional hearing broadcast live last week. In my view, the most important statement made by Michael Cohen was at the very end of his testimony when he revealed why he had volunteered to cooperate. He had to anyway because that House Committee has the authority to subpoena him. Michael Cohen's statement was (and I paraphrase what I recall hearing on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow's Show last Thursday night, 02.28.2019): “I am the only one of four individuals going to jail for actions we took on behalf of my client, Donald J. Trump, who is a cheat, con man, and racist. He is a liar; and totally irresponsible. The complicity cost I am paying is very high: I lost my professional and community standing, personal integrity, my lawyer's license; I may no longer practice law; my family will be severely impacted by my incapacity to ever earn a lawyer's income; and I am the only one of four (4) Trump associates who has been indicted. I will serve a prison sentence. I think it is totally unfair for me to be the only one indicted and sentence to serve a prison term. That is why I chose to cooperate as a witness.”
Cohen had 10 years providing competent legal services to the Trump Enterprises. And Trump still threw him under the bus’s when Special Council Mueller had him testify. Recall that the FBI had raided his professional offices and home (using a search warrant signed by a Judge who decided enough probable cause existed). Records obtained included 3 years of Trump Enterprises financial records which allegedly reveal several criminal actions: Bank Fraud; Excessive valuation of property; and improper use of certain funds to pay for agreements to remain silent by Stormy Daniels to not reveal those sexual trysts with Trump. What happened to Michael Cohen was earned by being complicit to doing what he was encouraged to do despite many actions allegedly being criminal and illegal. Let me point out that regardless of which religion's moral or ethical norms we learned, these norms emphasize the need to be honest and truthful (Do not be a false witness). Another behavioral standard is to not covet your neighbor's property and do not steal. These are personal interrelationship standards contained in the Decalogue (10 Commandments) which many learned when attending catechism instructions (mine was the Roman Catholic Church). In today's business practices, too many executives get away with being immoral and unethical. Consider those derivatives sold by certain Wall Street financial firms which were over-valued but nonetheless promoted as being worthy investments. When their overvaluation became apparent, it caused the global financial
crisis which threatened the economies of many nations all over the world including USA. Former President George W. Bush included President-elect Barack Obama in those global financial recession orientation briefings because supportive actions needed to be undertaken during the early days of the 2009 Obama Administration. Public policy decisions were made to have the U.S. Treasury become the guarantor world-wide (which used the full faith and support of We, The People to stabilize all impacted financial systems, both domestic and in other nations. It was the American worker/ consumer who supported what was done to thwart the distrust created by dishonesty and overvaluation practices. What astounded me was that no executive went to jail as a consequence of supporting dishonest actions which created those derivatives sold for more than the value falsely presented. Many economic transactions stopped because of total lack of confidence and trust levels. It was the U.S. Treasury which was authorized to step up and be totally responsible during the initial days of the 2009 Obama Administration. Another 1930's Great Depression was avoided thereby mitigating the potential collapse of many micro-economies. Truthfulness, trust, and integrity are essential to having the confidence to make deals which deliver exchanges of value given for value received (lawyers call these exchanges quid pro quo). This exchange of values happens when bartering; making sales; entering into performance contracts; etc. Without trust, truthfulness or full integrity,
it is very difficult for business transactions to happen regardless of how small or gigantic. These traits add up to being trustworthy and reliable. Unfortunately, today too many individuals are cheats...and it may begin in a classroom cheating on a quiz/test. As a consequence, many of us learn to always be on guard at levels which cause stress. But, eventually, dishonesty reveals itself when inconsistencies begin to show up causing one to question the deal involved. And consequences follow as Michael Cohen personal experience demonstrates. But then con men such as Trump trip over their own schemes crafted to obtain whatever they want regardless of the impact on others or the advice being provided. Trump knows that the U.S. Congress has the responsibility to allocate tax revenues to fund (underwrite) projects like “That Wall”. The U.S. Congress has not allocated funds to build that wall and yet Trump persists in trying to get what he wants by using funds allocated for other functions. Trump's lack of integrity; his inability to be the public servant who is a leader... all emanate because he seems to be incapable of honesty and truthfulness. Who trusts him? The voters of this nation must never ever elect such a person to be their President again. In addition, Trump demonstrates his persona's lack of empathy and sympathy. Cohen, once not his personal lawyer, becomes someone who is disposed of by being thrown under the bus'. Trump also practices nepotism. When Jared Kushner, his son-in-
law, whose security clearance was denied routinely; Trump intervened resulting in that security clearance to be established. This is part of his trait that Trump asks his appointees to be loyal to me (Trump) rather than being loyal to the nation as a public servant. His family members were inappropriately included in several meetings dealing with this nation's international interests. My projection is that those family members picked up information and acquiring business leads which all led to making deals benefiting Trump enterprises...all of which are being investigating for obstruction of justice and abuses of power. As a consequence of habitually dealing from a position of great advantage, Trump has used all that Presidential influence to deal with others from a dominant position who gets away with being dishonest and untruthful...with the likelihood that he gets away with false facts and fake data. These forms of dishonesty and untruthfulness eventually become transparent (i.e., exposed) and lead to being regarded as being not worthy of one's trust. Therefore, Trump should not be re-elected during 2020.

TO KNOW ABOUT COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID AWARD LETTERS
financial aid award letter. 1. Financial aid award letters can be confusing. Financial aid letters vary from school to school. There is no uniform format they must follow, so each letter can vary in how they use symbols (such as L or LN for loans) and even how they calculate the cost of college. Make sure to compare how items such as scholarships, loans and work-study are applied to the bottom line. 2. Know the ‘net price’ of college. Your letter may include the cost of attendance (COA), which is an estimate of what you can expect to pay for one year of school. Typically the COA includes tuition, fees, and room and board. To find the ‘net price’ at the college, subtract the ‘free aid,’ or scholarships and grants, from the COA. This net price — which sometimes can be significantly lower than the ‘sticker’ price of a college — is the amount the family is expected to pay. 3. Expect to pay more.

BPT High school students across the country will soon be eagerly awaiting financial aid award letters from colleges. For many aspiring college students and their parents, this is when things can start to get complicated. College is a big expense and it's important to have a clear understanding of the financing options to ensure students and their parents
make wise decisions. According to a recent survey from College Ave Students Loans by Barnes & Noble College Insights, more than twice as many parents (69 percent) found this time — figuring out how to pay for college — more stressful than the college selection process (30 percent).
Though financial aid award letters typically call out the “expected family contribution” (EFC), expect to pay more over the course of the year. According to the College Ave survey, 59 percent of parents said college was more expensive than they had
MARCH 8 - 14, 2019 anticipated. Parking, transportation home, club and organization fees, even dining out, can add to the bottom line. 4. You can petition your award letter. If you felt the financial aid award letter did not accurately represent your family’s needs, you can ask the school to re-evaluate your financial aid offer (especially if your circumstances have changed). Contact the financial aid office and request they review your cost of attendance to ensure it includes other expenses (such as childcare) or changes in your ability to pay ( job loss or medical costs), which may help you secure more money in grants, work-study or loans. 5. Keep applying for scholarships. While some scholarship applications have many applicants, others have little competition. Be sure to apply for specialty scholarships unique to your area of educational study or even local area. Every amount helps and reduces the amount your family has to pay. One easy scholarship to apply for is the College Ave $1,000 Scholarship Monthly Sweepstakes. If you find you still fall short after scholarships and grants and federal loans in the student’s name, one option to consider is a private student loan. Look for a private loan with good interest rates and flexible terms that meet your family’s unique needs.

County of Santa Clara to Assume Responsibility for Operating O’Connor and St. Louise Hospitals on March 1 in Santa Clara County is a tremendous win for thousands of patients who need our services, often in emergency situations, and the highly trained doctors, nurses and others who provide them,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez.
Santa Clara County SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – The County of Santa Clara assumed responsibility for the operation of O’Connor Hospital in San José, St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, and De Paul Health Center in Morgan Hill on March 1, 2019 as they became a part of the County of Santa Clara Health System. “We are excited to bring these community hospitals into our health system as we expand and enhance the high-quality care that so many Santa Clara County residents have come to rely on,” said County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith, M.D., J.D. “Our new partners share our mission, values, and passion to serve. We expect O’Connor and Saint Louise hospitals and De Paul Health Center to continue the phenomenal work they have already been doing in their communities.” “This acquisition is truly a win-win for the community. It prevents the closure of two critically important hospitals and ensures continued access to medical services for those who need it, regardless of ability to pay,” said Supervisor Joe Simitian, President of the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. The County of Santa Clara will invest in new technology and infrastructure at the newly acquired facilities, expand and augment current medical and hospital services, and be better positioned to offer the County’s extensive and integrated health services to all residents of Santa Clara County.
“We did it! Thanks to the extraordinary effort of County staff and thousands of county residents, we were able to purchase O’Connor and St. Louise Hospitals – hugely important to everyone, especially the 100,000 people in South County who have no other alternative,” said Supervisor Mike Wasserman.
Photo Credit: Pixabay Per the agreement for the purchase of the 358bed O’Connor Hospital, the 93-bed Saint Louise Regional Hospital, and the De Paul Health Center, the County has made assurances to continue operating the facilities with a focus on providing high-quality care and services, as well as improving the health of the community. The County will also institute its financial assistance programs at the new facilities to ensure that the most underserved in the community have greater access to high-quality care. “We have worked hard over the past few months to lay the foundation for transitioning these new facilities into the County family of health care resources,” said Santa Clara Valley Medical Center
Chief Executive Officer Paul Lorenz, who is leading the integration of the community hospitals into the County’s Health System. “While even positive change can be challenging, we are fully invested in supporting this integration to make sure it is as smooth as possible for patients and staff.” The hospitals, their staff and physicians all share the County’s mission to provide high-quality, compassionate and accessible healthcare. As a public hospital system, the County provides care to all people living in Santa Clara County, and this acquisition would support the County’s ability to serve even more residents in the community. “The acquisition of two more hospitals and a clinic
“I am proud of this County’s ability to lead on all things that matter most to the quality of life of the residents of this Valley; in this case access to quality healthcare,” said Supervisor Susan Ellenberg. “The expansion of the County’s hospital system through these purchases translates into a more robust safety net for our most vulnerable families, children and seniors. And that’s something worth celebrating.” “I am relieved that the sale has been completed and we are eager to move forward with integrating our health care system,” said Supervisor Dave Cortese. “The two hospitals and the clinic are essential to the lives of the residents who would have been left without nearby emergency care.” The two hospitals and health center were acquired from Verity Health, a health system that filed for Chapter 11 protection in late August 2018, triggering the potential sale of all six of its hospitals and other related assets in California. The County purchased the three Verity Health facilities located in Santa Clara County for $235 million.

MEXICAN ARCHAEOLOGISTS FIND 100S OF MAYA ARTIFACTS IN CAVE Balamku still preserve the charred remains of food, seeds, jade, shells and bones, among other things the Mayas offered their deities in those days.
EFE
Mexico City - Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) announced Monday March 4, 2019 that at least 200 millennium-old ceramic artifacts have been discovered in an underground ritual cave in the Mayan city of Chichen Itza.
The difficult access and topography of the cave made depositing these objects and celebrating rituals there difficult, which leads researchers to believe it was a place of great relevance to the Mayas of Chichen Itza.
The cave, which was discovered 50 years ago but has remained unexplored until now, is called Balamku.
The archaeologist maintained that this cave is "probably more sacred" than the Sacred Cenote (Sinkhole) itself, a circular sunken pit 60 meters (197 feet) in diameter and 15 meters (49 feet) deep, filled with water and located in Chichen Itza.
The cave is located 2.7km (1.7 mi) from the Temple of Kukulkan at the Chichen Itza complex on the Yucatan peninsula. INAH archaeologist Guillermo de Anda told a press conference that this is the most important discovery since the Balamkanche cave was found in the 1950s. "It's overwhelming. I believe it is without doubt one of the most important caves of the Yucatan and I also believe I'm not exaggerating when I say it's the most important find since the Balamkanche cave," the archaeologist said. "The greatest treasure" of Balamku, he said, is that "it hasn't been altered, it was never sacked and we have all the facts about it right here." Most of the objects found are censers dedicated
De Anda said that Balamku has more importance because "the effort needed to enter it is greater than getting into the Sacred Cenote, which received offerings and pilgrimages from all over Mesoamerica."

to Tlaloc, the water god, used for rituals and as offerings in the late classic period of Maya civilization, from the 7th to 10th centuries.
Mayan territory, but surmised that "central Mexico must have had an influence on Chichen Itza."
The many representations of Tlaloc, identified with pre-Columbian cultures in central Mexico, has sparked a debate about how they got to the Yucatan.

Up to now, the INAH team has carried out a preliminary exploration of the first 450m of the cave, though it is estimated that this is equivalent to just a third of its full length. According to INAH, Balamku signifies "Jaguar God," a reference to the divine nature the ancient Mayas attributed to that feline, which, they believed, was capable of entering and leaving the underworld at will.Â

“Captain Marvel” Brings Forth Comic Giant’s Social Workers Push for Better Pay, Working Conditions March is Social Work Month First Female Hero in a Starring Role thunder gods, men in metal suits, and of course, Vin Diesel’s riveting portrayal of Groot, a tree-like alien hero from “Guardians of the Galaxy”. A lot of the film relies on the idea that Carol Danvers doesn’t know much about her past, and as such is searching for answers on the unknown planet of earth, all the while villains are after her. In the beginning, the amnesiac Larson first plays the alien cop Vers, who after a turn of events begins to realize who she really was/is, Carol Danvers. From there it becomes a movie about identity and the struggle with identity crisis as much as it is about a superhero getting their groove back and being able to save the day in the end as well.

Arturo Hilario El Observador Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and Storm (Halle Berry) are all female superheroes that have graced the silver screen with their presence long before Brie Larson took on the helm of being Marvel’s first heroine leading their own film. Technically though, Larson’s portrayal of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is now the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it is set in 1995, a full thirteen years before Robert Downey Jr. began the whole thing with “Iron Man”. For children of the 90s like me, this was great to watch in “Captain Marvel”. In the trailers, and in the movie, Larson’s character, an alien “space police” named Vers, literally drops into the earth, specifically crashing into a Blockbuster Video. I’m assuming 95 was the video store’s prime, like Netflix is now. Seeing old titles on VHS in those scenes was mesmerizing, and a lot of the film pulls on the nostalgia heartstrings with its choices of music, fashion, and references. The film itself follows the very first Marvel cinematic universe character, as it retroactively explains the reasoning for the government’s push to find these otherworldly beings. Although “Iron Man” began the current cinematic universe in 2008, becoming the first of the eventual Avengers team, “Captain Marvel” takes it back to before there were
One of the big ideas coursing through the film is that of making your own path and going against the grain of those that don’t see your value or demean you. As much as news articles will hang onto the idea of this being a “girl power” or truly feminist film, (it is partly those things) I feel that any person, regardless of gender, can relate to the premise of forging your own path, and figuratively putting on blinders or cool sunglasses to block the haters and push forth in your own goals. In the case of Carol Danvers, it includes buddy cop adventure with a de-aged “Pulp Fiction” era Samuel L. Jackson. I can’t get over how good the de-aging technology was so flawless in this movie. Once you see Jackson it’s a little shocking, but then you get used to it and it’s not distracting like some CGI is in other films. Anyway, the most fun is watching this earthling figure out that there are stronger forces out in the universe, way before the eyepatch wearing, stoic figure he becomes in the future of the Marvel universe. In the end, this film follows a lot of the memorable story structures of the firsttime antics of Marvel cinematic universe heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and even the trippy introduction to Doctor Strange. This isn’t a bad thing. It will not be anything that reinvents the superhero film in terms of its story, but by Thor’s hammer, it will be remembered for its effect on the Marvel Universe going forward, by becoming the genesis of these 20+ movies. And just as important, little girls - and whoever wants to look up to an incredibly powerful female hero - will have Carol Danvers now. A true 90s girl, who we will see once again this year in a crucial role in “Avengers: Endgame”.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - March is National Professional Social Work Month, and advocates are speaking out about a new campaign to "Elevate Social Work." Social workers often are called in to help people who suffer from mental illness or drug addiction. In fact, statistics show one-third of social workers have been assaulted and 85 percent have been threatened or verbally abused. Angelo McClain, CEO of the National Association of Social Workers, supports a bill in Congress to require agencies to have a workplace-violence prevention plan and train workers on how to stay safe. "People don't realize it, but social work is one of the 10 most dangerous professions," McLain said. "Ninety-eight percent of our clients, we have good relationships with; we engage well with them. But there's that percent of clients, given the right set of circumstances, can become violent. Some social workers have been murdered in the line of duty."
Groups also are fighting for higher salaries, because the average social worker with a degree makes just $47,000-$49,000 a year - about $12,000 less than nurses or teachers. McClain said he supports a bill to be introduced in Congress that would raise the rate Medicare pays for social-worker visits. The measure is designed to attract more people to the profession and retain those already working. In California alone, thousands of jobs in social work remain unfilled. California's new governor, Gavin Newsom, has voiced his support for programs to lower housing costs, help seniors stay in their homes, and expand subsidized preschool and day care throughout the state. Janlee Wong, director of the California chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, said he supports those moves. "This is something that social workers believe in because they see how it strengthens families and helps families with their income," Wong said. He said he also would like to see a state law require those who call themselves social workers to hold a degree in the field.

The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the notice of Sale is $374,198.10. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. in said note, plus fees, charges and expenses of Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office where the property is located or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-206-787-2254. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the
scheduled sale. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT if the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Further, if the foreclosure sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid and shall have no further recourse or remedy against the Mortgagor, Mortgagee, or Trustee herein. If you have previously been discharged in bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this notice is intended to exercise the note holders rights against the real property only. As required by law, you are notified that a negative credit reporting may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligation. If required by the provisions of Section 2923.5 of the California Civil Code, the declaration from the mortgagee, beneficiary or authorized agent is attached to the Notice of trustee’s sale duly recorded with the appropriate County Recorder’s office.

CAN YOUTUBE EVER BE BRAND SAFE? to find an audience. When you put it all together, if you really want to reach a gigantic audience, you are going to need to find audiences that look (from a data modeling perspective) like your best customers, and the opinions of people in the real world about what is, or is not, acceptable is a heterogeneous mix. If your target is too narrow, or if you are only interested in content that could play at 7 pm Sunday nights on an FCC-regulated television station, you are going to pave the way for your less squeamish competitors to destroy you. Is YouTube a Platform or a Publisher? Photo Credit: Unsplash
Shelly Palmer They say that if you ask the wrong question, you are guaranteed to get the wrong answer. Asked as, “Can YouTube ever be brand safe?” the answer is no. There is no possible way to make YouTube, or any environment that relies so heavily on user-generated content (UGC), 100 percent brand safe. Asked as, “Is YouTube safe for my brand?” is a better question, and it is the proper lens for any serious marketing discussion. Before we get into what might be possible (assuming the government doesn’t get involved), I want to tell you exactly what is going to happen. Alphabet is a publicly traded, forprofit company. It has only one job: maximize shareholder value. And that is exactly what YouTube’s leadership team will be tasked to do. They will be given the resources needed to make YouTube as profitable as possible. If that happens to include making YouTube brand safe (or brand safer), great! If not, brands will be free to vote with their advertising dollars. Targeting at Scale YouTube has exceptionally large video audiences which you can very specifically target. If you want to put your message in front of every two-headed Martian who watches YouTube, enter your targeting parameters, choose a budget that fits your needs, sit back and enjoy. There are other purveyors of digital and social video audiences you can target, such as Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and Snapchat. BTW, I’m
using two-headed Martians as a metaphor. In practice, you can describe your target audience with a high degree of granularity. If you know whom you want to reach, all of these platforms have solutions for you. Brand Safety The objective benchmark for what is, or is not, brand safe differs from advertiser to advertiser. In fact, it can vary from product to product. If I’m marketing an R-rated movie that is full of colorful metaphors, I may not be super-sensitive to a few expletives appearing in the adjacent UGC or professionally produced content. If I’m marketing a family movie, my tolerance for colorful metaphors, or violence, or anything deemed untoward in the adjacent content may be exactly zero. If it were just this simple, it would already be fixed. And YouTube would not have been on the hot seat last week (really since 2015, when brands got mad about their ads appearing next to extremist video content). The Deep, Dark Secret: Being a Little Off Brand Works The problem with this issue is that the major players of the brand safety game – YouTube, and its advertisers, and their agencies – are not being completely honest with us or with each other. In the real world, people live rich, full lives and enjoy many different kinds of conversations and language and entertainment. Humor is regional. Music is global. Curses and weird visuals that surprise and delight tend
This question has been asked several times in several different ways. If it’s a platform, it is not responsible for the content; its job is to provide a distribution mechanism for its users. If it is a publisher, it has a mandate to curate the content and to give its various channels a point of view. Should YouTube (and Facebook, Twitter, et al.) take responsibility for what is uploaded? It’s a topic worthy of Socratic debate. Congress may have that debate before we do. Google Preferred Google says, “By taking advantage of Google Preferred, brands get access to among the top 5% of content on YouTube, reach the highly coveted 18- to 34-year-old audience, and receive the measurement results they need to maximize the impact of their campaigns.” This sounds awesome, but there’s not much information available to the public about which channels are in the top 5 percent or what content is in those channels. That said, Google Preferred is on the right track. Brand-Safe Zones on YouTube If Alphabet (Google and YouTube’s parent company) wasn’t a for-profit, publicly traded company with a mission to create shareholder value, there would already be several brandsafe zones on YouTube. It’s easy to do. You curate the content, monitor the comments, and promote the channels with the full faith and credit of Google. Presto change-o! You’re done. You now have a set of channels on YouTube that mimic FCC-regulated, brand-safe, broadcast network TV channels. The problem is, that would no
longer be YouTube; it would be FCCregulated-style, brand-safe, broadcast network TV content distributed over the internet via YouTube. It might find an audience, but then again, it might not. The curation of the content and monitoring of comments would need to be AI assisted (good news for Google, because they’re great at AI). The cost of doing business would skyrocket and the resulting price of advertising might not produce an ROI commensurate with the investment. More importantly, for the vast majority of people under the age of 30, YouTube is a brand – and it makes a promise. Watch, and we will inform, entertain, and enlighten you with content surfaced through the largest, most diverse social video platform in the world. Can Technology Solve YouTube’s Brand Safety Issue? The short answer is yes, with a qualifier. Google has the technological capability and the financial resources required to make YouTube 90-ish percent brand safe, maybe even 99ish percent (it’s just a guess). But the bad guys (whoever they are) are motivated and will never go away. This will result in an enduring arms race between YouTube and the bad guys. No matter how good YouTube’s system is, on any given day the good guys will be ahead of the bad guys or vice versa. Should YouTube get into a monumental game of Whack-a-Mole in the name of brand safety? Or should YouTube be what it is and let brands figure it out for themselves? Sergey? Larry? Susan? This one is in your court. Author’s note: This is not a sponsored post. I am the author of this article and it expresses my own opinions. I am not, nor is my company, receiving compensation for it. I HEARD A PUNDIT ON TV SAY THAT THE WAY WE CAN “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” IS BY REDUCING AIR POLLUTION AS IT’S MAKING US DUMB. IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THIS? Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk
Americans disproportionately exposed to bad air on a regular basis.
Unfortunately for the 40 percent of Americans (and 90 percent of the inhabitants of the rest of the world) who live in regions with air quality below healthy standards, it is true that air pollution can take a toll on our cognitive abilities.
“I think our study adds to growing evidence that the neurotoxicity of air pollution decreases the nation’s mental capital,” says senior study author and USC professor Jiu-Chiuan Chen. “For anyone who wants to help America succeed in the global competition of the knowledge economy, relaxing the air pollution regulations will very likely do the opposite.”
A collaborative study by American and Chinese researchers in September 2018 found that “longterm exposure to air pollution impedes cognitive performance in verbal and math tests” with verbal performance specifically trailing off further as we age, especially for men. Researchers derived the findings after analyzing language and arithmetic tests taken by 20,000 Chinese kids and adults between 2010 and 2014 correlated against shifting levels of airborne pollution. “Polluted air can cause everyone to reduce their level of education by one year, which is huge,” reports Xi Chen, a Yale professor and a co-author of the study. He adds that for the elderly, the effect can be more like a few years of lost education. “The damage on the aging brain by air pollution likely imposes substantial health and economic costs, considering that cognitive functioning is critical for the elderly for both running daily errands and making high-stake decisions.” But it’s not just the elderly who should worry about air pollution making them dumber. A January 2018 study by researchers at the University of Southern
You can help minimize air pollution. Start by trading the gas guzzler for a hybrid or electric car (or even better, a bike or a pair of good walking shoes and a transit pass). Go solar at home or, if you can’t, ask your utility if they offer a “green power” option. And don’t forget to urge your elected officials to introduce and support legislation aimed at reining in air pollution locally, regionally and beyond. Repeated exposure to poor air quality has been linked to lower scores on IQ tests for teenagers and the cognitive equivalent to losing one or more years of education for adults. Photo Credit: Pixabay California (USC) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) tracked more than 1,300 pre-teens living in and around Los Angeles over a 12-year period and linked repeated exposure to higher levels of airborne particulate matter (from car exhausts and factory smokestacks) with lower “Performance IQ” scores that measure our ability to solve problems we’ve never encountered. For every increase of 2.5 micrograms per cubic meter in
particulate matter pollution surrounding the teens’ homes, performance IQ scores dropped by one point. The teens living in the most polluted areas saw about a three point drop on average. The researchers point out that lower IQ is related to reduced earning power over a person’s lifetime— as well as poorer mental and physical health. The upshot is that reducing air pollution can have a significant effect on the lives of the 130 million
