RESOURCES ARE NEEDED TO ATTAIN DOMINANCE OVER THOSE SELF-SERVING FORCES
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Here is an E-mail received on February 14, 2019 from the office of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi which was entitled “WASTING NO TIME”. It read as follows: “Last month, thanks to grassroots supporters like you Hilbert, Democrats officially assumed the House Majority. Now, the American people have the representation they deserve, rather than an endless cycle of stealing Americans’ healthcare (Insurance services) and covering for Trump’s many misdeeds.” It continues: “We’re wasting no time. We’ve already begun the fights to: •Reduce gun violence •Protect the more than one hundred million Americans with preexisting conditions (by stopping repeal efforts of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, aka as ObamaCare).
•Strengthen voting rights (by dealing with jerrymandering congressional districts; requiring I.D.'s; addressing voter suppression (Jim Crow) practices) all of which impact voter participation in our democracy. •And addressing many more issues such as national security issues at the USA-Mexican border. BUT WE NEED RESOURCES (MONEY) TO “KEEP ON KEEPING ON” on all fronts. Will you contribute today?” The resource being addressed is money, and these funds are necessary to accomplish what needs to be done very soon. House Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio- Cortez (D-NY), who calls herself a Socialist Democrat recently proposed a progressive tax of 70% on incomes exceeding $10 million which already has 15 co-sponsors. This progressive income tax proposal is being deliberated now and is indicative of why the U.S. Congress will benefit from replacement of members of the establishment. Again, the issue is MONEY and its more appropriate redistribution using the Federal government's taxation authority.
Initially, Trump asked for $5.7 Billion to be allocated by Congress for THAT WALL. Pelosi said, “Our new Democratic Majority is well aware of the (many) tasks before us. We’re up against not only a president who routinely debases our democracy's (institutions), but a Republican Party that covers for him at every turn and a special interest lobby determined to promote (and support) them.” “We (Democrats) may not have access to the limitless special interest money (as) our opponents do. But we have grassroots supporters like you, which I’ll take any day of the week. Donate today to help House Democrats keep fighting. Thank you.” Regarding another related issue, Senator Bernie Sanders declared: “Let me be very clear. We cannot allow this country to become an oligarchy in which a handful of billionaires control our economy, (society) and its political life.” Sanders continues: “At a time of massive wealth and income inequality, when the
three richest people own more wealth than the bottom half of this country and when 46% of all new income goes to the top 1%, we need a progressive tax system which demands that very wealthy (individuals) and large corporations start paying their fair share of taxes. That is what poll after poll shows the American people want.” The initial funding request by Trump for THAT WALL was $5.7 Billion. The House negotiated that amount down to $1.7 Billion in the most recent budget proposal designed to please Trump so as to prevent a second Federal Agency Shutdown (which impacted some 800,000 Federal civil servants). In response, Trump declared “AN EMERGENCY” along the U.S.-Mexico border which will enable him to get around the U.S. Constitutional Checks & Balances. It is the U.S. Congress which has the authority to fund projects. “AN EMERGENCY” permits Trump to move funds from other projects to THAT WALL. This “national emergency” is entirely unreasonable and unsupported by existing reality's facts. No doubt this approach will be challenged in courts. Again, the issue is
obtaining reasonable funding. My observation is that all these different efforts to obtain funding end up being provided by those of us who are grunts, i.e., working class folks who reliably pay their fair share of all taxes. The Federal government currently has the most effective method of collecting funds and re- directing those tax revenues to programs which will do the most good for the greatest number. I highly recommend sending funds to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who is very able to sustain those checks & balances which the Trump Administration seeks to avoid. D.J. Trump has experienced a life journey which many of us are too honest to imagine. Let's do what we can to keep it that way. Contact <Jorge Aguilar <Aguilar@ pelosiforcongress.com>. County of Santa Clara’s Intern & Earn Program Begins Open Enrollment for 2019 Summer Internships “We can change the odds of success for our foster youth in Santa Clara County through the Intern & Earn program. It helps put them at the front of the line for job opportunities by giving them real time, on the job experience,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Cindy Chavez, Chair of the Board’s Children, Seniors and Families Committee. “They need this, they want to improve their lives and we can give them a leg up with this program.”
Photo Credit: Pixabay SCC SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. –Investing in the Silicon Valley’s next generation, the County of Santa Clara’s Intern & Earn Program is inspiring the County’s most vulnerable youth to start planning for a successful future. The program offers youth in the CalWORKs, Foster Care and CalFresh programs an invaluable opportunity to garner life skills, find mentorship and get hands-on career experience. Intern & Earn is kicking off this year’s program by opening up the enrollment period for paid summer internships and all eligible youth interested in working this summer can sign-up for a summer job!
Applicants are invited to a special sign-up event over Winter Break, February 19-22. The Intern & Earn program staff will be available to provide general internship information and assistance with job applications at multiple sites throughout the county. Youth in the CalFresh program, ages 16-24, and youth in the CalWORKs program, ages 15-17, can call (408) 758-3797 for session times and locations in North, South and Central county areas. Foster Youth, ages 16-24 can contact the Hub at (408) 792-1750, for special session information. “It’s never too early to think about employment and gaining valuable work experience, which are the keys to a successful future for our low-income students,” said Robert Menicocci, Director of the Social Services Agency (SSA). “The Social Services Agency is committed to providing youth with access to the services and opportunities they’ll need to support personal growth and professional development.” For 2019, the Intern & Earn summer internship program has been extended beyond its traditional six-week period, giving interns an opportunity to work up to eight weeks, between June 10 and August 2. This two-week extension over past
years will allow youth to capitalize on their summer months by increasing their earning potential. In addition, intern salaries have been increased to $16 per hour, allowing Intern & Earn to stay competitive with other youth employment options. Interns can earn a potential $3,840 this summer, working up to 30 hours per week at county worksites, community-based organizations and with private employers. Besides the earnings-based enhancements, the program is creating opportunities for youth that want to work and enroll in college summer courses. Modeled after the Foster Care Summer Bridge program, Intern & Earn will be offering a work-school option that allows students to earn a paycheck by completing up to 30-hours per week through a combination of course hours and a paid internship position. Applicants not able to make it to the winter break sessions still have the opportunity to apply as the program will be actively recruiting until positions are filled. Applications are available online at sccgov.org/internandearn or youth can call (408) 758-3737 for drop-in information. Community Based Organizations that want to learn more about the Intern & Earn program can attend the CalWORKs Advisory meeting, hosted on the first Wednesday of each month at the CalWORKs Employment Services Orientation Room (1879 Senter Rd., San Jose, CA 95112). If you’re interested in participating in the program as an intern or an intern Worksite Supervisor, please contact the Employment Connection Center at (408) 758-3737.

THE JUGGLE IS REAL: ONLINE STUDENTS' TIPS TO BALANCE FAMILY, SCHOOL BPT
with ASU, earned a bachelor's degree in business with a concentration in global leadership while juggling a full-time job and parenthood.
Balancing work, school and family can be a challenge. Some days might feel like more of a struggle than a juggle, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to have it all. In fact, one in four of the 17 million Americans enrolled as an undergraduate in a higher education institution is caring for a child, according to the National Center for Education. Many people in this position turn to online education to help make it possible to manage work, life, family and earning their degree. Learning how to successfully integrate coursework into an already-packed schedule comes with practice (and patience!). It never hurts to receive advice from those who've been in similar shoes. Here are three tips from juggling connoisseurs who have experience completing their degrees online while raising a family: 1) Have patience and think about the big picture Brian Hood juggled earning a bachelor's degree in software engineering online with Arizona State University (ASU) while parenting young triplets. His road to graduation wasn't without its fair share of challenges. "My desk is in the middle of my house and opens to a room that doubles as my kids' playroom. To say that I had challenges while trying to listen to lectures is an understatement," Hood said. Several times throughout his academic
Often, while he worked on his studies, his two younger children would come into his office and ask, "Daddy, are you done yet?" In these instances, Rutledge would take time to explain to his children what he was doing and why he was doing it. His biggest piece of advice? Make your kids a priority. "It's difficult for [children] to grasp the importance of the time you're spending on your education instead of with them - especially with younger children." Photo Credit: BPT
journey, he hit roadblocks trying to balance it all. "It was so frustrating, and at times, deflating. But then you take a step back, look at the situation, and ask yourself, 'How do I do this?' When you tell yourself that failure isn't an option, it becomes much easier to focus on finding a solution, rather than being consumed by the problem," Hood said. Hood's expert tip: With young kids around, invest in a good pair of headphones, and be flexible, patient and willing to pause and re-watch your lectures. 2) Communication is key For Cherise Shockley, the key to finding balance was opening a dialogue with her family and ensuring everyone was on the same page about her online degree program. "If you are married or have kids,

you have to tell your family what's going on. Explain to them that this will require a time commitment but, in the end, it will be worth it," Shockley said. Openness and honesty go a long way, according to Shockley, who earned her mass communication and media studies degree online with ASU. "You have to be organized and know that there are no shortcuts. If a problem comes up, make sure to speak up and ask when you need help." Shockley's expert tip: When challenges arise - as they inevitably do - remind yourself and your family that anything is possible with sacrifice, hard work, faith and determination. 3) Make your family a priority Robert Rutledge, an online student
Rutledge's expert tip: Use study breaks as bonding time with your loved ones. Go for a walk or play a game with your children and come back to your studies refreshed and ready! Managing everything can be overwhelming at times, but remember: completing your education can open doors to so many new possibilities for you and your family, such as the opportunity to advance your career, increase your overall earning potential and even pursue a personal passion. With nearly 4.8 million parents pursuing degrees, remember that you're in good company and are now armed with some expert advice on how to successfully juggle life, learning and family. With the right support and resources, earning your degree is possible and there is no better time than now to get started on pursuing your educational dreams.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TIMESHARES

It’s estimated that at any given time, there are over 1 million timeshare owners looking to end their timeshare ownership. Unfortunately, exiting a timeshare is more complex than many people realize.
vulnerable than when they’ve made the decision to end their ownership. The resale market is flooded, resorts have stacked the deck and con artists are waiting to take advantage of your situation,” says Gordon Newton, president of Newton Group Transfers and author of “The Consumer’s Guide to Timeshare Exit.”

reasons you may want or need to exit your timeshare, and there are several ways to do so, be it via a sale, transfer or cancellation. No matter how you part ways with your timeshare, Newton says it’s important to protect yourself by having a better handle on the industry. He offers the following insights to anyone who owns a timeshare: • The fine print in your timeshare agreements may be the reason you can’t sell it. Many resort developers see the resale market as a direct threat to their revenue stream and have accordingly rigged the system in their favor. For example, some resorts restrict rights and benefits for owners who purchase their timeshares on the resale market, intentionally devaluing your timeshare while also making it harder for you to unload. • Only sign an agreement offering you real protections in your timeshare exit. Specifically, any agent you hire should be aligned with your interests, agreeing in writing to cover all timeshare fees – or legal fees - that arise during the exit process for a flat fee. • Research your exit company’s credentials (through the Better Business Bureau, the state’s attorney general, consumer protection agencies and a general internet
5
search) looking for a minimum fiveyear track record of success. Beware of companies that make it hard for you to research them. • Be wary of timeshare exit companies boasting “attorneys on staff.” Those attorneys will be acting in the best interests of the company, not yours. • If an exit deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of phone solicitors telling you someone has a buyer, anyone advising you to stop paying your timeshare mortgage or maintenance fees, “donate your timeshare” programs, or anyone marketing a guaranteed timeframe for the exit. These are all red flags. For more tips and insights, visit myexitguide.com to download a free copy of “The Consumer’s Guide to Timeshare Exit,” a recently updated guide created to help consumers avoid scams when ending their timeshare ownership. Or call 888344-9776. If your timeshare has become more of a liability than a joy, you’re not alone. But don’t get burned. Take steps to part ways with your timeshare efficiently, safely and with care.

AFTER AMAZON PULLS OUT OF NEW YORK, GOOGLE AND SAN JOSE MUST FOCUS ON COMMUNITY BENEFITS Tech corporations and municipalities must prioritize residents' concerns as part of huge tech deals "Amazon withdrawing from New York shows how important it is that cities and tech companies ensure these megadevelopments benefit communities and not just wealthy corporations. "With growing public concerns about Google's impact on San Jose, we hope the City of San Jose and Google learn from this and guarantee a deal that puts residents first and ensures the benefits of growth are shared with working families and tenants through a

They want guarantees that the jobs created will be good, union jobs and not more poverty-wage jobs. And they want a clear and transparent process instead of seeing their local democracy subverted by closed-door meetings and secretive non-disclosure agreements."

8 maneras de eliminar las alergias primaverales
FEBRUARY 22 - 28, 2019
4 WAYS TO FOCUS ON SELF-CARE 1. Make over your morning: Rise an hour before everyone else in your household. Use the time to meditate, stretch, write in a gratitude journal or visualize a successful day ahead. 2. Make a list of your favorite things: Write down things that truly bring you joy and fill you with a sense of purpose. To ensure you’re finding time to do them, schedule them in your calendar. Some ideas could be going for a run, buying fresh flowers or tackling an arts and crafts project. 3. Invest in new gear: Sometimes the best motivator for getting active is a new piece of clothing or accessory you feel confident wearing.

Primavera.
No espere.
It’s no surprise that the concept of self-care is getting a lot of traction in many health and wellness circles. Self-care can improve your mental and physical health and help you be more productive. Unfortunately, many people don’t prioritize it. Whether you are a career-focused professional or a stay-at-home parent, it’s likely you tend to put other people’s needs – those of your children, colleagues, friends or family -- ahead of your own. Here are four ways to focus on making time for essential self-care activities.
“New footwear is a great way to support health and wellness goals, while helping you stay motivated to invest in self-care activities,” says Randy Woodworth, women’s athletic buyer for Rack Room Shoes. To help you on your healthy self-care path, invest in something that is comfortable and can easily transition between activities. 4. Take regular walks outside: Never underestimate the power of exercise and fresh air. Find the time that is most convenient for you, whether that’s first thing in the morning, during a lunch break or after dinner. Once you’ve got the plan in place, get into a self-care routine that works for you and stick with it.

along with your current insurance. Always exchange contact information with the other driver, get contact info from any witnesses, and obtain full insurance details from other drivers involved in the accident.
In the U.S. alone, there are 10 million car accidents every year, and the tense moments following a car accident, even a minor one, can be scary and stressful for everyone involved.
Make sure accurate information is included in the police report, and ask for a copy of the report to edit any incorrect information.
Drivers and passengers can feel confused and unsure of what to do. Even the most experienced and seasoned drivers can make basic mistakes after they have been involved in a traumatic event.
Failing to get medical advice: You may think that you were lucky enough to escape injury, but you should always get a medical checkup after a car accident, especially if you hit your head.
Simple, avoidable mistakes could cost you time and money, or lead to personal, medical and legal issues. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid after a collision: Fleeing the scene: Leaving the scene of an accident could land you in serious legal trouble. You may be in shock, but the most important thing to do is stay where you are. Check on your passengers, and once you exit your vehicle, check with the other driver involved in the accident. Try to remain calm and wait for law

Not reporting the accident: Even if it's just a minor collision, always report the accident to the police. Never let someone convince you to avoid calling the police.
If you decide to make a claim with your insurance company later on, or if you decide to pursue a legal claim, not reporting the accident could hurt your case. BROADWAY Q&A: MEETING MUNKUSTRAP
"Cats" performer Dan Hoy talks about his fondness for the show and what it’s like to work with a bunch of cats on stage
Deuteronomy tries to teach him throughout the piece without really saying it is that leadership is not in laws or in restriction. Leadership is in love, in forgiveness, in acceptance, in understanding; and embracing those people that we may not entirely understand or necessarily relate to. So, it’s a really cool journey to get to go on every night, because he does kind of start the show from a place of ignorance. Not necessarily ill-intentioned ignorance, but he doesn’t have this willingness to open himself up and then by the end of the show he’s really embraced this character that he has spent so much of the piece hating and trying to push away. Do you have any specific moments within the show or actually things that you may see as an audience member that is a favorite?

Dan Hoy remembers wearing out a VHS copy of “Cats” when he was a young boy. Ever since then he’s embraced the lessons and dance numbers that the show is made up of, and continued into a career in the arts. Graduating from college just last May, he has his first Broadway job out of college – which turns out the be that exact show he remembers so fondly. Playing the part of Munkustrap (and more obviously playing a cat), a leader in training for his tribe of felines, Hoy says that the show is an admirable, poetry and dance-filled experience to him. In the following Q&A, he tells us why he believes this show to be just that, as well as how it has been adapted to fit recent times, and what happened with the whole wearing-out-a-“Cats”VHS. How did you get into the performing arts? What was your inspiration? I’m originally from Cleveland Ohio, and I grew up actually watching "Cats". when I was a kid my parents bought me the VHS tape, it was a 1998 recording I believe, and I watched it so many times that I actually broke the VHS tape, and they had to go buy the DVD version of it. So, actually this show is a huge inspiration for me growing up. It inspired me to kind of start up in musical theater. I started as a dancer and then segue to acting, singing and performance on the stage. I went to college for it and now we’re here. With that in mind, learning you booked “Cats” must have been a wild moment. It was a really cool full circle moment for me. I remember when I got the call from my agent that I had booked this job, I couldn’t even make words for a good minute or two. It’s just weird how the universe works sometimes. This was the show that inspired me to go into this and then my first major contract out of college is this show. It was really surreal. Could you tell me in your opinion what "Cats" is
all about? There are a few levels on what makes "Cats" a really cool theatrical experience. On the more surface level, I think that the technical elements and the dancing, and the unique aspect of a bunch of people acting as cats and dancing around is this really, really cool just in its uniqueness. Especially when the show came out in the 80’s, nothing had been done like this before. It has a very artistic factor in that way. What I also think is really cool about this piece that I don’t think is talked about quite as often is one of the core thematic elements of it and the time that we’re living in right now. I think that at the core of this piece is learning acceptance. There’s one cat in the show named Grizabella and she’s the one that sings the iconic “Memory”, you know the song that everyone knows. And throughout the entire piece she’s been shunned and rejected from the rest of the tribe because of actions she has taken or because of who she was. At the end of the show after she sings “Memory” everyone realizes that leadership and community should never be through rejection or hatred or vitriols, it should be through forgiveness and love and acceptance. And I think honestly the culture that we’re living in right now, politically and socially, we need this story right now. We need to understand. I think it’s humanization. Relating to our fellow man and just embracing each other. So, you’ve mentioned "Cats" and community, and those seem like those two go hand in hand in this show. Could you explain a little bit about how your character of Munkustrap connects to that and the show as a narrator? Yeah, so he is a bit of a narrator and in the context of the tribe and of the piece he is sort of the leader in training. The leader of the tribe is my character’s father, Old Deuteronomy he presides over everything, but I aspire to sort of become the next leader of the tribe. In doing such, I think that Munkustrap, he tries to apply the law of the land and keep order and it’s very black and white initially. He tries to keep what he views as bad out and bring what he views as good in. at the end of the show what he realizes and what Old
You know, two are coming to mind. One is something that I actually do, for personal reasons, and one is a moment that I watch every night and just get chills from the beauty of it. The one from the personal moment for me [is] there’s a moment in the show, it’s a choreographed moment during a dance number called “The Jellicle Ball”, it’s a big twelve-minute dance extravaganza - it’s crazy. There’s this iconic moment where everyone is in unison together, and they’re slowly lifting their arms into the heavens. The section is called, “Warsaw”, but I remember as a kid, watching that moment on the VHS tape, and doing it with the tape, as my little five or four-year-old self, and then now getting to do it on a Broadway national tour is a really out of body experience. Especially the first time we did it in the room, it was really quite beautiful. Then the moment that I witness every night that gives me chills is actually during “Memory”. Keri René Fuller who plays Grizabella, who is stunning, simply fantastic, there’s a moment in the song where she’s sort of thrown herself to the floor, she’s desperate, she’s broken, she’s trying to search for answers. After a moment of collecting herself, she pulls herself up to her feet and just lets out this beautiful song to the heavens, and it’s so desperate and pleading and just wanting to be accepted and embraced. And the line is, “Touch me, it’s so easy to leave me all alone with the memory of my days in the sun.” It’s just poetic, and the way she delivers it every single night I have chills all the way up through my body, it’s just really beautiful. The first time you see it you might not follow every
FEBRUARY 22 - 28, 2019 little thing that’s happening because it is based on poetry but what’s cool about it is you have this feeling and this connection to it and you sort of understand the emotional roller-coaster. Also, something really unique about this tour is the dancing. "Cats" is a huge dance piece and these actors are insanely talented. What differentiates this piece from productions of "Cats" from the past is most productions were strictly original choreography. The original choreography was brilliant, it was done by a woman named Gillian Lynne. This production was actually choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler who you might know from a little show called “Hamilton”. He choreographed that. What’s cool about this piece is that it’s a marriage of Blankenbuehler’s work, sort of through a 2019 lens, and Gillian Lynne’s original, iconic choreographer. So even people that have seen the piece before, that do know the piece really well, they’ll be able to kind of experience this show for the first time all over again. For folks that haven’t seen "Cats", or that have seen the original but not this updated version, why should they make it out to watch the show? Well I think that the story is very timely, I think that it’s painting a picture of the world that we’re living in today in terms of how we treat our fellow men. But also, honesty, the dancing is unrealistically good. My character dances a bit, like I definitely dance, but I don’t dance as much as some of my fellow castmates. In the rehearsal room every day I fell like I’m getting a free show. It’s just so impressive and they’re so committed to their work and it’s really, really fascinating to watch a dancer tell a story without ever saying a word. They can tell the story with their bodies. It’s really quite remarkable. [Also] you’re seeing an iconic piece. The original won 7 Tony’s, it won a Grammy. It’s a very wellknown piece and its brilliant from the start, but now you’re kind of getting it through an updated lens, with a new fresh take. Also, you just get to see this insane amount of talent on stage in front of you. So, I’m very excited to come to San Jose, I’ve actually never been out to the West Coast, which is kind of crazy. But I’m thrilled to be bringing this piece out to you guys, and out to California. “Cats” runs from now until Sunday February 24, 2019. Tickets are available at broadwaysanjose. com

He visto acercarse a ciervos, ardillas, linces, coyotes, serpientes y búhos gigantes.

America. “As we enter the super-digital age, we (all of us) will be completely described by the metadata stored in Metamerica. It is the virtual country that describes our physical country.” Thesis Number 3: Cloud Computing is the Future. “Why pay for a group of IT technicians to patch servers and tend to racks of computers when you can plug into a computing and storage cloud and only pay for the services you use. It is identical to how America transitioned from generating its own electricity to purchasing electricity from the utility grid. The economics are too powerful for anything to stop this shift. It will be complete in a very few years. Want to see it today? Go to Google Apps for Business, salesforce.com, dropbox, etc., the list of software as services and subscription software and cloud storage companies is getting longer every day.”

I wrote an article back in April 2009 entitled Metamerica: Evolving The Governance Of A Digital Democracy. It begins, “Dateline New York: April 3, 2021” with breaking news about a massive, catastrophic data breach. Dateline New York: April 3, 2021 — The White House issued a statement today urging people to stay calm. The Federal Data Depository Corporation is now saying that people will have access to some of their data as early as next week. “Health records are job one,” said the HHS director in a joint statement. “We have back-ups for everyone’s dicom files and most of everyone’s MRI’s and about 100 million x-ray files on near-line storage. It will just take time to reload the data.”
The FCC issued a similar statement promising that the 4 million hours of user uploaded content stored in the cloud since 2009 and the 26 million hours of professionally produced on-demand content may be available by the end of the year. Sadly there is no word on when the Microsoft Office Cloud or the Adobe CS10 Cloud will be back online. And, to the delight of most citizens, the IRS has lost almost every tax return for the past four years. There is one bit of good news, Verizon’s LTE network can support VoIP calls, so at least some of the 165 million households and businesses without voice communication will have a work-around in the next few weeks. With 28 of the nation’s 80 major data centers totally down and the rest just holding on, people with netbooks, pda and cloud-based computer applications have been completely crippled by a loss of data that is unprecedented in history. It has caused the biggest financial crisis since 2008. Hundreds of software-as-
services companies have lost all of their data and the economic impact will easily reach 10 Trillion Dollars of combined losses. Rereading this, it occurred to me that we are not far away from some kind of knee-jerkstyle government regulation, or the evil work of a malevolent human/AI-hacker combo or nation-state hacking team that could cause pretty much all of this. While the “Great Data Crash of 2021” hasn’t happened yet, things are no better today than they were in 2009. In the past 12 months, companies like Marriott (500 million records), Exactis (340 million records), and Cambridge Analytica (87 million records) have suffered data breaches that put more than 1 billion records at risk, while Aadhar’s data breach in March 2018 put more than 1.1 billion Indian residents at risk on its own. So how would the Great Data Crash of 2021 happen? Or, perhaps more importantly, why have the questions I posed in 2009, and the very clear predictions of known consequences of our digital society, not only gone unanswered by our leaders but in many cases gone unasked? Let’s look back to help us see the future.
Thesis Number 4: The world is evolving toward a place where access to this data is going to empower all kinds of things — good and bad. “This is not so much a privacy issue (although you could label it that way) as a governance issue. What should the structure of the government of Metamerica look like? There are no geographic restrictions, no towns, no counties, no states, no country — there are just Metamericans that describe Americans. Because Metamericans are data, they can be sorted any way an interested party might deem reasonable: by community of interest, by behavioral preferences, by medical issues, by DNA sample, by … you name it. Metamericans are data, and data can be mined, analyzed and correlated in every imaginable way.” Questions from 2009 That Remain Unanswered in 2019 “Is your DNA covered by copyright law? Are your media or television viewing habits? Are your medical records going to be available on a local storage device, regional server, your doctor’s LAN, your HMO’s WAN or at the fictitious, but reasonable to imagine, Federal Data Depository Corporation? If every bit of a Metamerican (pun intended), is data, which bits are protected, which are
FEBRUARY 22 - 28, 2019 protectable, which are private, which are semi-private, and which are public?” Clearly the concentration of data controlled by the data-rich tier-one tech giants such as Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google (FAANG) should raise additional questions about governance with respect to data provenance and ownership. But you can’t stop there. You must ask about location and usage data from the carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile), ID tracking and usage data from Internet Service Providers, Data Warehouses, Analytics firms, etc. And let us not forget about the government itself. Back in 2009 I concluded my article as follows. I could not say it better today. “What I’m worried about is how we are very quickly becoming dependent on explosive amounts of centralized data and, how unprotected, and unprotectable, that data is. Want to create a financial crisis that will make this one [October 2008] look like a trip to Disneyworld? Take out the data warehouse of the IRS, a few banks, a couple of credit reporting agencies, Google, Amazon and Microsoft. If it happened today [April 5, 2009], it would be hard to recover from. If it were to happen in 2021, we would not be able to recover from it. These are just a few of the myriad issues we are going to have to think about as Metamerica and America evolve together. How will the Great Data Crash of 2021 occur? Maybe it will be cyber-terrorism; maybe it will be an incredibly robust computer virus. Maybe it will be a solar emission that is too powerful for our atmosphere to block. Sadly, there are about a zillion ways for it to happen and only one-way for it not to. What we need is a cross-industry task force that would include experts from the military, IT, healthcare, legal, telecommunications, CE, entertainment, ethics and government to get together and have a serious, Socratic debate on the appropriate way to govern Metamerica. It’s not about opt-in and opt-out privacy; it’s about our economic sovereignty and our national security.” Author’s note: This is not a sponsored post. I am the author of this article and it expresses my own opinions. I am not, nor is my company, receiving compensation for it.
Theses from 2009 Thesis Number 1: We live in a world where metadata (data that describes other data) is more important than the data itself. “In Metamerica (the data that describes America), we are all a bunch of ones and zeros. Everything about us, our tax id number, social security number, credit card numbers, contact information, financial data, medical history, entertainment preferences, our computer software, the content we own, everything we are, is described by ones and zeros somewhere.” Thesis Number 2: Metamerica is more valuable and more vulnerable than physical

LOS ANGELES - California last week took a huge step toward the goal of running entirely on renewable energy, as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power announced that it’s retiring three natural gas power plants.
The agency says its decision was influenced by a 2010 law that requires coastal power plants to reduce the practice of using ocean water to cool their facilities.
The L.A. DWP, which is the largest municipal utility in the nation, says it will close the Haynes, Harbor and Scattergood gas-fired plants near the L.A. International Airport. Tim O'Connor, senior director of the California Energy Program at the Environmental Defense Fund, says his group applauds the agency's plan to go 100 percent renewable. "The technology is available today to balance our electric load and to meet load growth with clean sources, as opposed to continuing the trend of

operating but will now close by 2029. The Environmental Defense Fund estimates that closing the plants will reduce California's greenhouse gas
"What we're seeing is a signal that we're going to be pursuing clean energy, clean resources, as opposed to spending billions of dollars on plants that we know are imperiling our planet because of climate change," he states. The L.A. DWP is also working on a multi-year study on how to get to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
