HISTORICALLY UNDER-REPRESENTED GROUPS OF STUDENTS

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR My daughter Maria-Socorro reminded me that our family had 4 generations of teachers: Abuela Hazel, mother Ruth and uncle Frank, daughter Mary and grandson Roberto Diego. Sheila, a good friend is a teacher at a local parochial school. They had taken me to a good Italian restaurant for my 90th birthday supper celebration. And our tongues and minds became well lubricated with alcoholic beverages. The conversation turned to the practice of school districts to schedule “PD-days” (professional development) after Superbowl Sunday, when many teachers called in 'sick' requiring use of a substitute teacher. Grandson Roberto Diego was studying for a teacher’s licensing test in Physics which he needed to pass in order to retain his current teaching position. He was licensed in chemistry and biological sciences, but not physics. The 150 students (mostly Latinos) he had this year were combined with 150

more students taught by another teaching colleague. So, these two teachers took 300 students (plus parent monitors/chaperones) to the Exploratorium in San Francisco. These sort of science field-trips are extremely important to convey to students, especially students from low income families, that science is and can be seen all around you. The girls especially blossom from these outings because they realize that a science technical knowledge background may lead to a well-paying job ($85,000/ year) in contrast to be an office staff worker @ $15/ hour (or $31,400/year). Mary teaches a Bio-science technology class whose curriculum was developed in collaboration with Genentech, Inc. and many of her former students go on to obtain 4-year professional degrees in biological/ biomedical sciences with the mentoring and counseling of professionals for whom they perform routine technical work assignments. It is by this informal pipeline system that historically under-represented groups of students (HUGS) gain access to 'well-paying jobs' after acquiring enough personal exposure to develop a personal interest and gain access to mentors who are professionals with whom

they may identify with. Roberto-Diego, physics teacher, said, “My class is 95% Latinos who, when they first realized “I was from their community and culture, were simply blown away.” And I was given 'permission' by these students to really expose them in depth to the fascinating aspects of physics.” “How so?”, I asked. “Well, they all have 'smart electronic cell phones” so I got an old 45 rpm record player and played contemporary jazz music, demonstrating the magnetic device which converts motion to electronic signals using a diaphragm whose vibrations faithfully recreated the sounds of that recorded music. They were 'blown away!' Now, I note that some students who usually were slouched at their desks sit in attentive positions which makes teaching them easier now. Abuelo, you were right - a long time ago you told me that communication is a two-way process, and it is good to see feedback. Finally, in their subsequent physics test, the entire class scored at a higher level.” These are the ethnic students who are historically under-represented groups of students (HUGS). The conversation eventually applied “HUGS” to an Anglo-Saxon

principal who led one of the professional development sessions. It was apparent that he was totally unaware that he projected white supremacist values almost, but not quite subliminally. The discussion about racism, misogyny, xenophobia, sexual abusive acts all can lead to the grouping of adults into HUGS groups. Each group will have its specific biases, prejudices, and ignorance expose to open discussion. The major challenge is that many individuals do not possess the vocabulary to express their feelings and experiences. It is evident that the legislative approach is not enough because the ultimate acceptance of all by all (or even the civil tolerance) cannot be achieved until each of us is willing to accept the reality that each individual has areas in which he/she is a bigot or prejudicial person. If each of us does some realistic self-assessment, each will know who they do not like and who they cannot tolerate. But then, I believe that each and every one of us has an area requiring assessment. Use a trusted friend who provides honest feedback comments. Areas to assess are: A) Do your expressed beliefs match the actions being taken or considered? B) Will your intentions

produce the impact being envisioned? C) Do your actions interrupt or perpetuate the issue being addressed? D) Are you willing to commit to doing what it takes for as long as it takes to produce social or economic changes resulting in a desired future state (or practice)? I believe that too many of us go through life without ever challenging the many norms which we are taught. Many of these norms are being impacted by current technology developments (especially information technology, robotics, and automation). These developments often result in fewer traditional job opportunities in addition to increased product manufacturing. And those with no job may require welfare assistance or a guaranteed personal annual income. The current norm of ‘everybody must earn their keep' is simply not feasible all the time now. All of these considerations define 'HUGS' of sorts. Consequently, all of us must be ready to be committed to a 'life-long learning process' which will always be a work in progress. It is these 'what if ' musings which may help each of us to resolve the challenges we face today.

En la sesión solmene ante la Cámara de Representantes y el Senado, el presidente Trump empleó ciertamente un tono más cortés si se le compara con sus dos mensajes previos, pero la sustancia de sus políticas se mantuvo inalterable: Guerra sin cuartel contra los inmigrantes más pobres a través

del despliegue de 3,750 soldados a la frontera y un ramo de olivo a los rivales geopolíticos de Estados Unidos, en especial el líder de Corea del Norte Kim Jong Un. Más aún, el presidente lanzó una abierta amenaza a los demócratas: “Si va a haber paz y legislación, no puede haber guerra e investigación. ¡No funciona así!”. Al parecer

en la Casa Blanca no han tomado nota de las lecciones del cierre del gobierno federal durante 35 días, un episodio del que Trump salió con las manos vacías: los demócratas son la nueva mayoría en la Cámara de Representantes y son el nuevo contrapeso real del ejecutivo estadounidense. Por eso fue natural que el Mensaje de Trump fuera recibida con expresiones de rechazo por parte de los demócratas. La respuesta demócrata en español correspondió al procurador de California, al mexicano americano Xavier Becerra, quien acusó al presidente de ignorar la importancia de mejores escuelas, salarios con beneficios, mejores leyes, protección a los dreamers y una reforma migratoria integral. Es necesario decir sin embargo que el presidente obtuvo aplausos tanto de demócratas

como de republicanos cuando habló de la necesidad de combatir el cáncer infantil, de erradicar el virus del VIH en 10 años, así como del logro de la reforma del sistema de justicia criminal. La posibilidad de temas de consenso es real pero no aparecieron como prioridad presidencial. Si el Mensaje del Estado de la Unión se ve desde una óptica electoral, el presidente hizo muchos guiños a su base más conservadora, pero hubiera sido deseable que trazara un camino bipartidista en migración y seguridad nacional para evitar que el país regrese al borde de una nueva parálisis el 15 de febrero. Critics pointed out that the tax cut primarily has benefited the wealthy and that Republicans have proposed deep cuts in social programs to make up for the lost tax revenue. Trump also asked Congress to vote for a bill to outlaw late-term abortion. Krolik took issue with the way he described the procedure, saying it was unnecessarily inflammatory. "It's just outrageous that he would discuss it as if they are ripping babies from bodies and that it is a willing, happy choice," she said. "Those are really tough decisions by families, and those lies are just making it harder and dangerous for women whose lives are at risk from their pregnancies." She did praise the president's proposal to encourage more transparency in drug pricing, but said she thinks more direct intervention to prevent price gouging may be necessary.

How to Help Protect Yourself from Tax Identity Theft

Filing your taxes can be a daunting task. Although taxes aren’t due until April 15, getting a head start can be more beneficial than you think. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), “tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses your stolen Social Security number to file a tax return

claiming a fraudulent refund.” Scammers rely on personal information when they are trying to steal someone’s identity which is why tax season is usually a prime target for them. According to BBB Scam Tracker, there were over 3,500 reports of tax scams in 2018 with consumers losing an average of $999. In 2017, there were over 3,000 tax scam reports which is an indication that scammers may be employing new techniques to

You may also want to consider getting an IP PIN from the IRS, a “number assigned to eligible taxpayers that helps prevent the misuse of their Social Security number on fraudulent federal income tax returns”. • Skip any drinking occasions you are nervous about. If you are really concerned about an event, just ask yourself if you really need to go. But you don’t have to just sit home. Take your family out or find another activity that doesn’t tempt you with alcohol.

• Avoid known risks. If you know your brother is a heavy drinker, for example, stay away from him. If you know the same party last year was full of excessive drinking, just stay home.

• Leave early. If you know you will be tempted to drink at a party, plan in advance to tell people when you arrive that you only stopped by briefly and have somewhere else you need to be. • Go with a sober friend. There is safety in numbers, and you can help each other should you be tempted to drink.

It has been many years since Collopy was an alcoholic, but he says the rewards of his life now are much better than any drink he ever took. “Once you’re sober, you can allow yourself to begin to dream about life again, the way you did when you were a kid,” he says. “That doesn’t mean those dreams are going to be easy to achieve, but at least you can look at them and say, ‘I’ve got a shot.’”

For those suffering from alcoholism, the temptation of the holidays is gone but there are a lot of social situations in the coming months that will test their commitment to turn their lives around. “There are a variety of social situations – from after work drinks to birthday parties – that an alcoholic must be on guard for,” says John Collopy, author of the book The Reward of Knowing (www.johncollopy. com), which relates his own struggles with addiction. “For people who are trying to stop drinking, their struggle is a daily one that never ends. Even after they quit, they must remain vigilant to keep from falling back into the abyss.”

Although Collopy has been sober for many years, he knows that any type of event can be challenging for those who have quit drinking. He used alcohol to help him deal with memories of a troubled childhood with a dysfunctional family and abusive father. When he became an adult, he quickly became dependent on alcohol to get through the day, plus he had angermanagement issues. “Every day for an alcoholic is a challenge and especially when they are at events where it might seem that you are not being sociable if you don’t drink,” says Collopy, who today is a successful real estate broker. “Real alcoholics know they can never have just one.” For those who want to stay sober in

Q&A: GETTING ANSWERS TO “WHAT MEN WANT”

Director Adam Shankman on Empowerment, Sports, and How the Original “What Women Want” Would Not Work in This Era

I think rather than saying it’s a sports movie I would say that there is a lot of fun in there for men. We definitely worked hard to make sure this was not a “man bashing” movie, that every kind of man who would’ve crossed her path is well represented. That we say some actually really positive things about certain men. And that the sports cameos are going to be very fun and fulfilling for the audience. But yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s a sports movie in the traditional sense, like “Remember the Titans”, but there’s definitely a sports element in there and a lot of great stuff for guys. You see aspects that touch on female empowerment, fatherhood. What would you say is the core or heart of the film or the main idea that is going throughout the film?

In the new film “What Men Want”, Taraji P. Henson stars as Ali Davis, a successful sports agent who has, until now, been able to navigate the boys club that exists within her career. When she is passed on a promotion she begins to question herself, and before she can even begin to piece together a solid plan for the future, a fantastical situation involving drinking a spiked tea leaves her with the ability to hear men’s thoughts. Hijinks then ensue from Ali trying to navigate her world with these abilities. If this sounds familiar, a similar premise is what led the popular romantic comedy, “What Women Want” in 2000 with Mel Gibson as the “hearer”. Titles seem to be one of the few things that attach the new film to Gibson’s though. Adam Shankman is the Director of the new “What Men Want”, and although he’s thankful for the first film existing, does reinforce that the contents of this film are in many ways a world away compared to the original. Filled with comedians, sports cameos and a lot of ad-libbing, and co-starring Tracy Morgan, Richard Roundtree, Josh Brener, Tamala Jones, Brian Bosworth, and Erykah Badu, this is certainly a more comedy-centric approach. In the following interview Shankman reveals how “What Men Want” was made, why its central theme is very important, and what a shared movie universe with the cast of “Girls Trip” would actually entail. Hello Adam. Thank you for the time to chat. To start off, could you tell me if “What Women Want” has anything to do with this new incarnation besides that shared premise?

No, it’s really just the shared premise of the curse movie, where you’re suddenly curse with the abilities to hear inside the opposite sex’s head and past that, we have basically no other shared DNA. the story is very different. The first one was a really ‘dyed in the wool’ romantic comedy. This is a comedy with a romantic element to it. Obviously, we’re very grateful that the first one was made, but the first one right now, if you sort of look at it, in terms of what’s happening today, I don’t know that it could be made right now because Mel Gibson’s character is such a misogynist, and such a chauvinist that I think his character would be pretty reviled in today’s social climate. We put Taraji’s character in the middle of an industry that is deeply dominated by men. She is competing legitimately in a man’s world. If you look at the real sports agent culture, there’s very few women agents. More everyday thank god, but there has been a barrier too, so she is really in a den of wolves in this one. So, what happens is that in the Mel Gibson movie he was really the villain of the piece. His own beliefs, his disrespect for women, his beliefs that they were second class, etc. in this movie, the villain is really the culture that our central character has put herself in the middle of. By choosing a field where she’s in a male dominated workplace, she’s gonna find herself in a competitive space. It is because of the field that Ali works in that it is also a sports-related movie. Had that always been the plan from the beginning? When I came into the movie it was already that she was a sports agent. And then, as we progressed the different cameos kept shifting and growing and changing and who was available and who wasn’t available. It was always that she was a sports agent, yeah. Would you say that this is a sports movie as well?

FEBRUARY 8 - 14, 2019 Well, it’s really helpful. You know I’ve never shot an R-rated movie and it’s funny when I took the job people were like, “Let’s see how you handle R-rated material,” and I was like, “I live in an R-rated world!” All I’m doing is being able to show and say things that exist as opposed to having the handcuffs on, to be careful to not show these things. It always makes me laugh, it’s sort of that thing again [of ] making assumptions about the boxes that people live in. it’s exactly what the movie’s about, you are hog tied to other people’s ideas of what you’re capable of and you sort of have to force yourself out of the box if you want to get there. Were there any challenges that you can recall in making “What Men Want”?

I think the main idea is about the central notion of learning to appreciate yourself and not play by the rules that you believe were carved out for you by other people. I also think that there’s a strong message about the value of listening to each other and not making assumptions about the world around you. She has a line early in the movie where she says to her father, “how am I supposed to win in a system that’s rigged against me.” And he says, “you just have to do you.” And that is really shorthand for, “you have to keep carving your own path.”

The big challenge was just the schedule alone, just trying to get everything because when the movie was assembled it was over an hour longer, I had to cut down three storylines out of it that ended up being superfluous and I shot a lot more movie. Which is crazy to think, that there was that much more movie in there. But, the biggest challenges for me were to make sure that we never even got near this notion, even though there’s romance in the movie, that Taraji’s character is made whole by the love of a man.

I think one of the things that is a misconception is that there is a single path and that’s really the single path to success. And I think that’s what at the end of the day the movie ultimately uncovers but in this incredibly toxic, negativespun environment that we live in today, to have a place that you can go with your friends, your family, alone, with a date, or whoever, sit in an audience and laugh, then walk out going like, “Oh yeah, she self-actualized by being forced to listen to other people.” [So] the power of listening, and opening up your thoughts and ideas is very, very underlined in the movie.

Because, you are always sort of pulled magnetically in that direction when you’re making movies like this and there’s a romantic element, optically you’re just going to suddenly find yourself in the land of, “look, she got loved, she’s made it”, or “his love made her feel better”, and that’s just not this movie at all. The other one I found was that there was that when I came on the assistant character Brandon was written as gay, but he was written as very stereotypically and to try and move people into a more authentic space where they could accept that there were other kinds of gay characters that were funny, was very challenging.

Speaking on the cast, there are a lot of great, funny people in this. How was it working with them, and did they get to do a lot of ad-libbing, especially with the stuff going on in their heads? Basically, what I did is I cast people very specifically who I felt comfortable saying, “okay we’ve now shot the scene scripted, let’s start playing around with the script.” this movie was not a big budget movie and we had to shoot it incredibly fast, the fastest movie I’ve ever shot other than “A Walk to Remember”, and so we were flying by the seat of our pants every day. I knew that it was important to get the foundation of the script and then let them kind of take-off. I would just guide them through that kind of improvised take or takes that we would then do. And because everybody has a different style of improvising and not everybody matches up you have to keep everybody on message for what the scene is, or else it can go off the rails. That became a really fun part of the shooting and I know that the actors really felt, from what I’m led to believe by them, they really felt understood and appreciated and it was an incredibly fun set as a result. There’s a lot of stuff in the movie that’s not scripted but I did shoot everything that is scripted. It definitely changes things that it is rated R, right?

Based on this project, is there any avenue that you see a sequel for “What Men Want” happening? I’m not gonna say yes, I’m not gonna say no because people have liked so much of the stuff in the movie that this question continues to be raised and if it were, let’s put it this way, Sister (Erykah Badu) would be a big part of it. She’s just too good a character. Here’s what my sequel is I suppose: Taraji’s character goes on a trip with Sister to Europe and runs into all the “Girl’s Trip” girls and they all drink Sister’s tea and it just turns into a free-for-all. Everybody having the power. And finally, why should people go see “What Men Want”? I’ll tell you why. We need to laugh as a society. We need relief. We need to laugh collectively and sitting in that room hearing people laugh is absolutely infectious. This movie has kindness and joy running through its veins, and strong messages of empowerment and kindness. I would recommend it just so that we can collectively as a culture kind of have that experience. “What Men Want” is now in theaters.

alongside us was neat. Controlling the car was a breeze, and with a new paddle system, borrowed in part from technology Porsche uses, allows the automatic 10-speed to be controlled with some manual tap modes as well. This lightning quick shifting done through the tap system allows for more precise track use. One thing I noticed was that although it does have a lot of features meant for more seasoned car enthusiasts and track lovers, it does have a lot of automation and safety features which make it a vastly multifaceted sports car. Features like front collision alert (new to the Camaro) are easily customizable and can be turned off. As Oppenheiser puts it, “All this translates to smooth ride opportunities on the open road, at the grocery store, or on a track.”

This writing chronicles a trip through the natural wonders of the coastline and surrounding region prior to this natural disaster. A few months ago, November to be exact, I had the opportunity to head to Sunny Santa Monica, California to test out Chevrolet's new Camaro SS on a tour through the Pacific Coast Highway and into the canyons adjacent to the coast. It was just as the fall was settling in Southern California, meaning warm days and slightly cool nights. Flying down to LA from the Bay Area is a pretty easy task, and as I left Halloween night to my destination in Santa Monica, a mere 20 minutes away from Los Angeles, I was excited for what the next day would bring. “Vroom” is a term that I would definitely say traveled my thoughts leading up to this media event, where fellow writers and car enthusiasts would take a day to roam the coast of Southern California and venture into the gritty but scenic canyons that lay in between us and our destination of Westlake Village. During our trip we had the opportunity to hear from Al Oppenheiser, Camaro’s Chief Engineer on what exactly makes this iteration of Camaro tick. One of the big takeaways was that alongside its new tech in every trim level, the 2019 Camaro has offers one of the best entry level sports cars on the market based on features and cost. Camaro Day Our morning began with a presentation from Chevrolet and its lead Camaro Engineer, Al Oppenheiser. Not only is Oppenheiser the man behind the Camaro brand, he is also a die-hard fan of the car, so it’s not so much a job as it is “the job” for him, a daily immersion in his favorite things. Oppenheiser gave us a primer on what was

new this year for Camaro and highlighted some of the key projects that went into this year’s lineup: drive customization, fan appreciation, and price. As we left the meeting room in the Viceroy Hotel, we stepped out into the balmy 81-degree weather to a delightful sight: in the driveway sat a couple of gleaming, 2019 Camaro SS, ready for us to take onto the streets. It’s such a “California” ideal to be able to take a bright colored American muscle car into the long winding roads hugging the Pacific Ocean with the convertible top down. Overall, it’s a part of Americana, the historic iconography of “being American” in some ways. Just like those images of old west cowboys, 50’s diners and of course, the Camaro hitting any highway in this country - they instill these experiences and dreams of freedom and adventure, in vast, wonderful landscapes. The Camaro’s history is drawn from this and has become part of this iconography as well. So, on this day in Santa Monica, we’d be partaking in this, our own Americana moment, ourselves. To be fair, although I am born and raised in this golden state, these opportunities are just as exciting to me because it does let me live in this world of fast (but legal speed limit) cars, beautiful scenery, and a sense of enthrallment. The Red Hot SS Adventures It just so happens that we would be partnered up for this trip, and 50 miles would be driven by the first driver, and 50 back from our lunch destination, Boccaccio's Restaurant, in Westlake Village. To get there we’d leave the edge of the West coast and venture into the canyons that lay to the East of PCH. Since I was new to driving through the PCH and the canyons, my very courteous driving buddy allowed me to take the drive back in our Camaro SS, after I had a sense of the roads. And the color for our day drive couldn’t be more perfect, RED HOT. The new lines and shape of the Camaro are great to look at, and I had the opportunity through the drive to see fellow Camaros drive alongside me. Knowing what the car looked like as it sped

The new LS model is what I would call, bang for the buck. Oppenheiser says about the new LS model, “We wanted to go after more people looking at us when they price shop on entry level price. It’s a bonafide LS, it’s not a stripped-down car, priced at $25,999, a great deal to get into the Camaro for those that love the styling.” By using already existing parts for Camaro and not removing “customer facing” features, the car’s higher sticker price is really the only thing removed. For this year’s model, they definitely wanted to compete and have the higher feature, lower price starting model than another, horsenamed sports car. Oppenheimer says the Camaro team, “wanted to stay competitive with the features and pricing without skimping on the actual car, it’s features, and what’s most important, what lies under the hood.” I will say that the smooth, tight vehicle allowed me to take curvy canyon turns and more exciting straightaways on the PCH than I thought my body and my brain, usually driving a sedan, could allow me to. As the trip ended and I drove back towards downtown Santa Monica, with the sun lowering as I rode past the boardwalk and the beach, I ended the day thinking about what I thought was that “Americana” driving experience. One quote that sticks with me, going back to the day’s experience of driving on open roads, and the fun that can come with it, is when Oppenheiser said, “The Camaro happens to be one of these cars, as Corvette, that people don’t need, it’s a car you want. So, when you talk about the market shrinking in general the car market is moving towards crossovers - but in the end my personal opinion is that when you get home at the end of the day, whatever your transportation mode is to work you want to peel off that car cover and get into that Camaro. It’s a car you want, it makes you feel good, connects you to the driving experience.” It was definitely a great experience and I hope to hop back into one of these marvels of engineering sometime to experience again, as Al Oppenheimer says, “spirited driving”.

LATINO LEADERS CONDEMN TEXAS EFFORTS TO INTIMIDATE NATURALIZED VOTERS FROM PARTICIPATING IN ELECTIONS voting in Texas. WOULD EXTENDING DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME (DST) YEAR-ROUND HAVE BENEFITS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

The concept of “daylight savings time” (DST), whereby we set our clocks ahead by an hour from mid-Spring through mid-Fall so we can get more done using natural light later into the evening, was first proposed more than 200 years ago by Benjamin Franklin as a way to save money on candles (!). While Franklin’s idea didn’t catch on back then, Germany instituted a “war effort” version of it to conserve fuel during World War I. The U.S. followed suit in 1918 but scrapped the idea shortly after the war ended. DST came back to the U.S. during World War II when FDR instituted it year-round as “war time” between February 1942 and September 1945. After WWII, some states adopted summer DST but it wasn’t until Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966 that it became standard across the country (initially Arizona and Michigan opted out; these days only Arizona and Hawaii don’t observe DST). This past November, Californians voted in an extension of DST year-round across their state. The rationale is that the twice-a-year time change causes lost or poor sleep which leads to more accidents, aggravates existing health issues and has even been linked to a short-term uptick in suicides. Oregon and Washington are also considering aligning with California so the entire West Coast could be on DST throughout the year. But according to a 2011 study published in The Review of Economics and Statistics by researchers from Yale and Claremont McKenna, such a change may not be good news for the environment. “Our main finding is that, contrary to the policy's intent, DST increases electricity demand,” report researchers Matthew Kotchen and Laura

Grant. “Estimates of the overall increase are approximately 1 percent, but we find that the effect is not constant throughout the DST period.” According to their data, DST causes the greatest increase in electricity consumption in the fall (estimates range from 2-4%) when dipping temperatures send Hoosiers inside earlier to turn up their thermostats. They estimate that increased energy demand as a result of DST adds ~$9 million a year to household power bills across Indiana while the “social costs” of the resulting increased emissions range from $1.7-$5.5 million annually.

Of course, mileage varies by region. A study by the California Energy Commission found that extending DST would have little to no effect on energy use in that state. Meanwhile, a U.S. Department of Energy analysis of 67 different power utilities across the country concluded that a four-week extension of DST would save Americans ~0.5 percent of electricity per day, or 1.3 trillion watt-hours in total — enough to power 100,000 households for a year. Whether or not the recent interest in extending DST throughout the year on the West Coast will take hold across the country is anyone’s guess. In the meantime, we can all look forward to the second Sunday in March to spring ahead and leave the short and dreary winter days behind us — at least for a few months. PARA LA FELICIDAD EN EL AMOR Prepare un cuadro con recortes que representen para usted momentos de dicha, armonía y felicidad, puede también incluir fotografías que representen momentos felices con la pareja. Coloque el cuadro en su altar espiritual y rodéelo con un pentagrama, una pirámide y flores y ramas de romero, obsérvelo frecuentemente, en especial antes de salir de casa, invocando al mismo tiempo la presencia y bendición de las diosas del amor Venus, Afrodita, Isis y Oshún. PARA LA FIDELIDAD En noche de luna llena rellene un saquito rojo con los siguientes ingredientes: un trozo de raíz de la hierba Juan el conquistador, 7 clavos de olor, dos corazones de metal entrelazados con hilo rojo, un poco de polvos de ven a mí, los pétalos de un clavel rojo, una pequeña llave, un poco de raíz de peonías, una imagen del ojo visor. Al finalizar coloque el saquito en medio de los colchones de su cama, del lado que duerme su pareja. Cada noche de Luna llena, exponga el saquito a la luz de la Luna durante dos horas y rece la oración de San Valentín. PARA EL AMOR Y LA ATRACCIÓN Si alguien le interesa, se recomienda que consiga dos velas rojas de buen tamaño, escriba sus iniciales y las iniciales de la persona que le interesa en cada vela y aplíqueles a cada una, 21 gotas de

aceite de chuparrosa, rodee las velas con pétalos de rosas y clavel formando la figura de un corazón. Encienda las velas durante tres horas diarias, a la misma hora. Si lo hace con fe y si la persona le conviene, entonces muy pronto se unirán. Hágalo por veintiún días consecutivos. Comience en día miércoles. Acompañe el ritual rezando la oración a San Antonio de Padua al mediodía y a la media noche. PARA FELICIDAD EN EL MATRIMONIO Compre tres ramos de rosas amarillas o color naranja, escoja las más hermosas. En día viernes entre las 11 am y la 1 pm, vaya a un río, lago o manantial y láncelas una a una al agua pidiéndole a Oshún el favor que necesita, si las flores son atraídas por la corriente y se alejan de usted, es augurio que su deseo será concedido. Al llegar a casa rece la oración a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre. Rece la misma oración todos los días durante cincuenta días. PARA LA FELICIDAD EN UNA NUEVA RELACIÓN Consiga dos piedras cuarzo rosa de tamaño similar, límpielas muy bien con agua florida y rocíeles agua de lavanda durante la noche de Luna llena, al mismo tiempo pidiendo su más grande deseo de amor. Posteriormente colóquelas en un sitio donde pueda verlas con frecuencia. Es preciso que solamente usted las acaricie, si lo hace otra persona, habrá interferencia de energías. Ambos cuarzos deben limpiarse cada cambio de estación o sea durante cada solsticio y equinoccio(21 de marzo-21 de junio-22

Todos los días durante nueve días, récele una novena a San Antonio y otra a Santa Elena y ofrezca dos veladoras de ambos santos, entrelace las veladoras con listón rojo y añádeles unas gotas de aceite de Adán y Eva, un poco de esencia de rosas, un poco de polvos de corderito manso y colóquelas sobre un corazón formado con pétalos de rosas rojas. Si es para el bien y conveniencia de los dos, los santos le traerán de regreso al ser amado. Comience en día viernes y queme incienso de vainilla y bergamota tres veces al día. PARA SOBREPONERSE DE UNA RUPTURA AMOROSA Rellene la mitad de su almohada con flores de lavanda, los pétalos de siete rosas blancas, cáscara sagrada, hierba angélica, boldo, poleo, heliotropo, mirto, pasiflora, tilo y valeriana. Todas las noches antes de dormir rece tres veces la oración a Santa María Magdalena y ofréndele una vela color rosa durante cuarenta días consecutivos. Tome un té de hierba de San Juan en la mañana y otro de tilo antes de dormir. PARA ATRAER EL AMOR DE SU VIDA Consiga un saquito de preferencia que sea de terciopelo rojo, dentro del mismo coloque raíz de patchuli, tres rajas de canela, un poco de hierba angélica, tres hojas de menta, cinco flores de lavanda, los pétalos de una rosa roja, un poco de almizcle, un poco de incienso de ámbar, polvo de citronela y un poco de cascarilla, acto seguido, lo expone a la luz del Sol por unas tres horas y otras tres a la luz de la Luna llena. Finalmente rocíele unas gotas de aceite o esencia de heliotropo y pórtelo consigo todos los días invocando la asistencia de la diosa Oshún. Por las noches ofrende una vela amarilla y rece la oración a San Antonio de Padua.
