School Sport and Sports Leaders News
Sports leaders
What a fantastic start to the year! Students have been signing up for the Sports Leaders UK courses and we welcomed Ms Paley to our team of staff. Ms Paley will be taking on the role of Internal Verifier alongside Mr Molyneux for the qualification course Sports Leaders level 1, 2 and 3. Mrs Allen will remain the tutor for these courses. Dance leaders, under the watchful eyes of Mrs Hollinrake and Miss Hendry, have been taking shape too. Courses followed here are the level 1 and 2.

The response to taking on a club activity has been fantastic. To date over 230 students have signed up to the Highfields Sports Leadership Academy award and qualification courses. The clubs run for years 7 and 8 on Wednesday lunchtimes and for years 9-11 on Friday lunchtimes, with the sixth form receiving a tutored timetabled lesson on a Friday. If students wish to purchase a Sports Leaders hoodie, t-shirt or polo shirt kit letters are available from staff tutoring these courses and payment can be made via ParentPay.
The first events that some of these leaders have been selected to officiate at are the primary school sports evenings held in the sports hall at Lumsdale on Wednesday evenings after school and the primary school’s mini soccer at Cavendish Fields on 23 September.
Combat sports at Highfields for year 7
The Autumn term has kicked off for some girls in year 7 to experience combat sports in lesson time. The girls have had the opportunity to try wrestling, fencing and judo (don't worry boys, you get the opportunity after half term).
Experienced coaches, Trevor Hoskins from British Wrestling, Sally Peat from British Fencing and Andy Parton from British Judo have delighted students with a fun introduction to these sports.
Combat sports fit very nicely into our fundamentals programme at key stage 3 looking at key concepts around head, heart and hands.

Youth Sport Trust FA Girls Project
Year 10 girls have been awarded the Youth Sport FA award having successfully completed the Youth Sport Trust FA Girls project 2021.
The students and staff are now looking to develop further as the excitement builds in developing girls’ football at Highfields.
