Newsletter Message from the headteacher My fabulous PA designs a very tight schedule for me which is how it comes to be that I have 15 minutes to write 500 words for this newsletter piece. Start the clock. I love schools and in particular this school. I am not one of these headteachers that writes things on Twitter or LinkedIn and I HATE going to external meetings and conferences. What I really enjoy is being out and about in school getting amongst students and staff. This is why lockdown was such a challenge for me and also why I have HATED having to isolate whilst having Covid over the last 10 days. I am so THRILLED to be back in school I can’t even tell you. Amongst the highlights of today was my chat with some year 12 girls about their career aspirations. Amongst them there was a prospective lawyer, a medic and a ‘don’t know’. It was the ‘don’t know’ with whom I most closely associated. She asked me when I had decided to be a teacher and I told her I hadn’t quite decided yet (I’d quite like to have my own icecream van, just so you know). My point to her was that not knowing what you want to do with your life is not something to be worried about whether you are 16 (like her) or 52 (like me). Life has a way of leading where it wants you to go eventually. All we need to do it be open to trying hard and willing to take a risk or two. I visited every classroom today as usual but my most fascinating conversation was with a student as he waited for his bus. I asked him (as I tend to do) ‘what was the most interesting thing you learnt today?’ He told me that he had been fascinated by a type of electrical component whose diagram showed that apparently it absorbed rather than emitted light. Evidently the lesson had ended before the teacher got to explain how this occurred so Ben and I spent a few minutes discussing what kind of cell it might be and how and why it would absorb light. People often forget what schools are - they are places where younger people come to figure out the world under the guidance of slightly older people. When you come to work every day remembering this, the politics, organisational and legal constraints are much easier to deal with. Finally, I just want to say thank you to all those lovely students and staff members who have welcomed me back and asked me how I am after being off sick. One student filled me in on the teacher who had covered one of my lessons in my absence, ‘they were BRILLIANT’, he said, enthusiastically. My face must have fallen a little because the student then added, ‘what I mean is that they were a better teacher than you…but…’. He was just about to think of something to soften his criticism when his bus showed up. The thing is I would have been offended but I know the person who covered for me and it’s true, they are definitely a better teacher than me. Bet they can’t stick a flake in a cone like I can, though. We are Highfields. Andrew Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Highfields Parents, Teachers & Friends Association The Highfields Parents, Teachers & Friends Association (PTFA) is a voluntary group of parents/carers, teachers and friends who meet approximately six times per year to plan fundraising events for the benefit of the school and all of its students. Being part of the PTFA is a good way of meeting other parents/carers, gaining an insight into what is happening at school, and having a say on how the money we raise is spent. The PTFA have raised funds for a wide variety of projects around school including buying new sports equipment for the PE department, a video camera for the dance and drama departments, books for the school libraries and to support the lower school lunchtime cookery clubs. The PTFA is friendly group and most of the meetings are held at Designate@The Gate on Smedley Street in Matlock, over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. The PTFA particularly welcome new members, with fresh ideas, to join meetings. If you would like to get involved, either on the committee or as a volunteer at events, please email ptasecretary@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk for more information, or leave your details in an envelope, labelled 'for the PTFA', at the school office on either site. The PTFA also has a page on the school website detailing dates of next meetings, events, important news etc. Our first meeting of the year is a social event to welcome everyone back and to meet anyone that is interested in getting involved. This will be taking place on Thursday 30 September at 6.30pm at Designate on Smedley Street. The PTFA appreciate the support given and look forward to welcoming you to their next meeting Liz Cruise (Chair) Highfields PTFA

Newsletter School Sport and Sports Leaders News Sports leaders What a fantastic start to the year! Students have been signing up for the Sports Leaders UK courses and we welcomed Ms Paley to our team of staff. Ms Paley will be taking on the role of Internal Verifier alongside Mr Molyneux for the qualification course Sports Leaders level 1, 2 and 3. Mrs Allen will remain the tutor for these courses. Dance leaders, under the watchful eyes of Mrs Hollinrake and Miss Hendry, have been taking shape too. Courses followed here are the level 1 and 2. The response to taking on a club activity has been fantastic. To date over 230 students have signed up to the Highfields Sports Leadership Academy award and qualification courses. The clubs run for years 7 and 8 on Wednesday lunchtimes and for years 9-11 on Friday lunchtimes, with the sixth form receiving a tutored timetabled lesson on a Friday. If students wish to purchase a Sports Leaders hoodie, t-shirt or polo shirt kit letters are available from staff tutoring these courses and payment can be made via ParentPay. The first events that some of these leaders have been selected to officiate at are the primary school sports evenings held in the sports hall at Lumsdale on Wednesday evenings after school and the primary school’s mini soccer at Cavendish Fields on 23 September.
Combat sports at Highfields for year 7 The Autumn term has kicked off for some girls in year 7 to experience combat sports in lesson time. The girls have had the opportunity to try wrestling, fencing and judo (don't worry boys, you get the opportunity after half term).
Experienced coaches, Trevor Hoskins from British Wrestling, Sally Peat from British Fencing and Andy Parton from British Judo have delighted students with a fun introduction to these sports. Combat sports fit very nicely into our fundamentals programme at key stage 3 looking at key concepts around head, heart and hands.
