Sorbel leaves Camp to chase his dream job By KATHIE NINNEMAN Communications Director After more than three decades of service at Hermann Sons Life Camp, John Sorbel has taken his love of working with children and love of baseball to the Leakey ISD. John will serve as the maintenance director for the 1A school district in the Texas Hill Country. But the draw for John was the opportunity to do something he has always wanted to do – coach high school baseball. He also will serve as an assistant coach for the football team. “It’s time to chase my dream,” he said. This was not something he had planned. Everything fell into place in about a three-week span earlier this summer. Coaching and other connec-
tions from years past were renewed and before he knew it, he was being offered a job. “I’m excited. I’ve made the right choice,” he said, joking that it was time to “mow my own grass,” a reference to the many years he has spent mowing the grass at Camp. Son Bryce will be coaching in nearby Medina, a school that is in the same district as Leakey. That means father and son will face each other as opposing coaches. Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett said, “I wish John nothing but the best. He was a big help to me when I arrived in 2018 and I am grateful for the knowledge he shared with me about Camp.” See SORBEL, Pg. 12

If you attended Family Fun Day at Schlitterbahn on June 26, then you know what I am talking about. It was a day that exemplifies everything that is great about fraternalism. Families from all around the area came together to enjoy some fun in the sun at a reduced price that included a chance to share a meal. If you know a child who attended our Grief Support Session in July, then you know what I am talking about. Because of the generosity of our members and lodges, 52 children were able to attend this impactful session at no cost to their families. They were guided on their healing journey by licensed counselors from the South Texas Children’s Bereavement Center. Our awesome Camp staff

cital this spring, then you know what I am talking about. I attended the New Braunfels recital and was so impressed by the performances. This is another one of those benefits - like Camp - that are underwritten by your premium dollars and the investment of those dollars. I could go on and on with examples of what makes Hermann Sons Life so much more than just life insurance. You could probably name a few of them yourselves – from the friendships and bonds you have formed with your lodge families to the opportunities to serve your communities through your various outreach programs. I am often reminded of this quote from Robert Byrne – “The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” The purpose of Hermann Sons Life is to serve and protect our members and their communities. Sales Hector Cabral Coming home to Hermann Sons Life joins IT staff By ROBIN CZARNEK Vice President of Sales Thank you so much for the warm welcome I have received since joining Hermann Sons Life in April. Becoming a part of the Hermann Sons Life staff has been much like coming home. Growing up, I was a member of Pershing Lodge, attended dance lessons for a number of years and attended Camp every year, and my son went as well. Hermann Sons Life has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s such a blessing to be here to help keep Hermann Sons Life thriving for future generations. A little about me…I have been married to my husband, David, for 30 years and have two amazing children, Haley and Garrett. Haley is entering her third year of law school at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide) and Garrett is a fitness trainer at a boxing/ kickboxing gym. They are my greatest blessing and my why. I have been in the insurance industry 33 years this July and I am passionate about insurance. I will always have an open-door policy and welcome feedback from our agents and members. I am excited to see lodges meeting again and was thrilled to be able to attend my first lodge meeting as Vice President of Sales with Gulf Lodge. More than 20 agents qualify for bonus money in second quarter SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life agents had a great second quarter with 20 individual agents earning themselves a cash bonus based on the number of applications written and amount of premium income generated. That doesn’t include the agents from the Get More Insurance agency headed up by Cynthia Sultenfuss. Together the agency agents wrote 33 applications and generated more than $17,000 in premium income to earn themselves cash bonuses totaling $700. In the applications written category, Becki Carley from New Braunfels Lodge lead the way with 25 applications. That garnered her a $300 bonus. Recipients of $200 bonuses were Chris Naughton from
Siemering Lodge in San Antonio with 25 applications and Glenford Boehme from Castroville Lodge with 17 applications. Twelve agents received a $100 bonus. They are Kathy Green from New Braunfels Lodge and Shirley Faske from San Marcos Lodge, each with 14 applications; Marlin Tanneberger from La Vernia Lodge with 12 applications; Wayne Tiffin from Cuero Family Lodge, Roxy Pruski from Mission-Alamo Lodge in San Antonio and Cynthia Sultenfuss from Biry Lodge in Devine with nine applications each; and Shirley Huebinger from New Braunfels Lodge, Carol Krauss from Pershing Lodge in San Antonio, Annette Roecker from Seguin Lodge, Michael Saathoff from Hondo Lodge, Celeste Salge from Kypfer-Salge Lodge

Giddings Giddings Lodge recently made a donation to Trail Life Troop 143 of Giddings. The $300 scholarship was to be used for the group’s summer camp. Lodge President Pat Abell made the presentation at the July meeting during which the boys were treated to a meal.

S.A. Home Association intends to amend bylaws The San Antonio Hermann Sons Home Association is giving formal notice of its intent to amend the bylaws. The amendments include changing the type of organization to a 501(c)(2), specifically limiting president expenditures, and including a “force majeure” (acts of God) clause to allow for board directors to remain in place under unforeseen circumstances. The Home Association will host its Annual Assembly on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Rathskeller, 525 S. St. Mary’s St., San Antonio. The assembly will include a review of both fiscal years 2020
and 201, as the assembly scheduled for 2020 was cancelled because of COVID. Members of the eight San Antonio lodges that make up the Home Association are invited to attend. The Home Association also reports that there was a great turnout of volunteers to help with parking cars during Fiesta. This is an important fund-raiser for the Home Association. Albert Ranzau from Harmonia Lodge and wife Becky led the crew all week. Special thanks go to members of Mission-Alamo, Pershing, Louise Schuetze, Harmonia and Siemering lodges for volunteering their time.

Watch out for various bereavement scams This is Part 1 of an article written by Melissa Ramsey, Better Business Bureau Education Foundation columnist. Part 2 will appear in the September issue.
After the loss of a loved one, you are left physically, emotionally and sometimes financially drained. Scammers take this opportunity to try to make a fast buck. Below are the most common scams to be aware of during difficult times of mourning. Unpaid bills. You are notified from a handyman service that
“just before your significant other passed away, he/she asked us to come and make a few repairs to the outside of your home. They agreed to pay $500 up front and another $1,000 when the job was completed.” Outstanding debts. You receive a phone call from a collection agency about a debt/high credit card bill your deceased loved one incurred. These predators hit fast, not giving you enough time to sort through financial affairs. According to the collection agency, “you are now
responsible for the whole debt.” Life insurance inheritance scams. An “insurance agent” notifies you (by phone/email/ letter) that your beloved left you a large life insurance policy. The cash will be wired to you, but first you must make the final premium payment Or, you receive a call from an “attorney” to notify you about an inheritance. All that you have to do is just pay the processing fee. Contact from clairvoyants/ psychics. The phone rings and it’s a person with a special mes-
sage. “Your loved one reached out to me from the other side with a message for you. They desperately want to talk with you.” The clairvoyant may use your nickname or other personal details that your loved one would know. Insurance scam. You receive a call from your insurance offering condolences for your recent loss. A friendly voice is on the other end of the line wanting to update your insurance information, to insurance it will continue as before. They just need to veri-
fy a few things. The grandparent scam. This scam has been around for years. However, kind-hearted people grieving the loss of a loved one are at risk of a twist on this scam. Instead of requesting money for an “emergency” your “grandchild” will need money for travel expenses in order to attend the funeral. Also, they may need new clothes and shoes to look nice for the service. (They don’t want the family to be embarrassed with their worn-out attire and they need a new haircut.)

Youngest campers enjoy very first mini-session By CECILY KELLY Vice President of Member Benefits The best part of my job is experiencing our benefits! Family Fun Day at Schlitterbahn was a blast. Check out the story on Page 12. Almost once a week this summer I have had the privilege of going to Camp to see for myself all the fun that the campers are having. The week after the Fourth of July we hosted a very successful Grief Support Camp the first half of the week and an outstanding mini-camp the later half of the week! This was the first time we have held a mini-camp. This shortened session is designed exclusively for our 8-year-old and 9-year-old junior members. I am delighted to report that this mini-camp was so successful that several campers either signed
up for a full week session or they signed up to attend the second mini-camp session that will be held the first week of August. Just by the photos on this page you can see how much fun these campers had. Mini-camp was run by our Hilltop Camp Director “Skittles” and the Assistant to the Executive Director “Lucky.” Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett praised both for the success of this session. Skittles and Lucky were given the ball and they ran with it! This mini-session was designed to let these young campers experience the best parts of Camp - from daily activities to the dance and night activities, to living in a dorm and making new friends. These juniors got a taste of what Hermann Sons Life Camp has to offer and we are hopeful that all of these campers will return next summer for a full session!

Sorbel will fulfill dream of coaching baseball Cont’d. from Pg. 1 “John has made an impact on a lot of children in his years at Camp,” Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said. “I think it’s great that he is going to be able to fulfill his dream to coach baseball and I know he will be an asset to the Leakey ISD.” As he prepared to leave the place he has called home for almost half of his life, John reflected on his years at Camp. His first summer at Camp was in 1988 when he came to Comfort to be a counselor. The girl he was dating at the time was going to be working at Camp, so he followed her. That relationship didn’t work out but John fell in love with Camp and would return as a counselor
and senior counselor for the next three years. He didn’t work at Camp in the summer of 1992 but returned the next year as a counselor before he was offered the position of facilities director, a fulltime job that included a place to live. That wasn’t the extent of his duties. He also served as Hilltop Director for 16 years and for the last three years has been the Assistant Director at Hilltop. For John, it has never been about the title. “It’s about doing the right thing for Camp,” he said. “You don’t have to have a particular title to have an impact on children.” During those early years as a full-time employee he and wife Carla got married. She is a
pharmacist. Son Bryce, as mentioned earlier, is a teacher and coach. Daughter Jessica lives in Key West, Fla., where she works in a dental office. John has seen multiple generations of Hermann Sons Life families come and go at Camp. The children of campers from his early years are now attending Camp and he said he “loves to hear the cool stories of people who used to be campers who want to share that memory with their children and grandchildren.” John believes strongly that everyone needs a purpose in life and he believes his is working with children. “God and my wife have gotten me everywhere I need to go,” he said. Now he needs to go to Leakey and fulfill a dream.

Shining Stars send special thank you Hermann Sons Life received a special thank you from two Shelby Lodge Shining Stars for the Family Fun Day held in June at Schlitterbahn-New Braunfels. Henley Baker, 11, and Elsa Baker, 6, mailed in their thank-you artwork and a photo of themselves to express their gratitude for being treated to the Fun Day as Shining Stars. Mom Rene Baker wrote, “Thank you so much for the kindness and hospitality at the Schlitterbahn event. My girls told my husband how much fun they had and how our backyard pool was boring now!” Each year in June, registered Shining Stars are treated to a free day at Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels and Hermann Sons Life members are offered tickets at a discount. This year more than 160 participants en-
joyed the water park fun held on Saturday, June 26. The day began with a complimentary breakfast for all participants and Shining Stars also received a free Schlitterbahn drink cup for all-day use. Shining Star membership is open to all eligible junior members 17 and younger. With submission of the Shining Stars registration form, the juniors are featured in the Hermann Sons Life newspaper and on the Shining Stars website page. They also receive a fun packet in the mail. Registration forms are available each month in the newspaper and also online on our website. For more information, contact Jacqueline Klein at the Home Office. Brenham Lodge restarts meetings, games BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge met June 11. This was the first meeting since March 2020. In observance of Flag Day, Vice President Gary Falkenberg read, “This Old Flag.” Members agreed to begin hosting bingo games again. During 2020, the lodge welcomed two new members, Kevin and Melissa Ulrich. A thank-you card was read from the family of Bennie Hanath for the donation made in his memory. The lodge plans to have the gutters cleaned and have the air conditioning system worked on. Get-well cards were mailed to Pearlie Hanath and Rosalie Renner. Sympathy cards were sent to
those who recently lost family members. Receiving a card were Otto Peters Jr. following the passing of his brother, Milton; to Doris Eckermann and Alfred, Esther and Patricia Lampe following the passing of their sister and aunt, Laura Fiesler; and to Magdalene Knuppel and family following the passing of her husband, Arnold. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Allen Krause recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. Members enjoyed a meal of hot dogs with trimmings and desserts. Shirley Rowan, Doris Falkenberg, Karl Goessler and Ken and Nora Kettler were thanked for their help with the meal. – Reporter

Giddings presents donation GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge will meet at the Santa Fe Steakhouse at 6 p.m. on Aug. 12. At the July meeting, the lodge hosted Trail Life Troop 143 of Giddings. The lodge presented the troop a $300 scholarship for its summer camp. The troop started in 2014 and has increased in membership to 42. There are 16 instructors. Meetings are held at Martin Luther Lutheran Church. The boys enjoyed the “make
your own taco” bar prepared by Cecilia Martinez who also made a cake for the boys decorated with their Trail Life logo. The lodge received a thankyou card from Caleb Schimank for the scholarship he received. Birthday cards were sent to Cataleya DeLaRosa, Valgene Ebner, Mercedes Flores, Ty Kasper, Brynlee Smith and Lillyanne Williams. – Reporter

Flatonia Lodge will meet on Oct. 6 FLATONIA – Flatonia Lodge welcomed a new member at the July 6 meeting held at Robert’s Steakhouse. Agent Mary K. Seifert reported that the dance recital went well, summer camp sessions are almost all filled and that she attended an awards ceremony in San Antonio. A note was received from the Celebration House Food Panty in Flatonia thanking the lodge for its
$300 donation in observance of Join Hands Day. Shannen Novak sent a note thanking the lodge for the scholarship she received. Renee Pavlica reported that she attended the scholarship dinner in Schulenburg to present Erica Otto with her Retirement Home Scholarship. The lodge’s new member goal for 2021 is six.
The lodge’s Humanitarian Award nominee is Judy Pate. Celebrating July birthdays were Renee Pavlica, Kenneth Ponder, Meredith Bean and Coleen Barnett Carl. The attendance drawing was won by Helen Steinhauser. The next quarterly meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Robert’s at noon. – Reporter

Fort Worth will meet Sept. 12 FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge will meet Sept. 12. The meeting date has been moved due to Labor Day. Lorin Storey, a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, will be at the meeting to make a presentation to the lodge. The lodge has welcomed three new members. They are Sydney Russell, Cooper Lee and Jason Johnston. All three were recommended by Maggie Minter. That puts the lodge that much closer to meeting its new member goal for 2021.

Boerne holds first meeting of 2021, installs officers BOERNE – Boerne Lodge members gathered July 2 for their first meeting since March 2020. The meeting was held at the Rainbow Senior Center which has opened up to all activities. Members were excited to be able to once again socialize and plan for the future of the lodge. In celebration of this meeting a covered dish lunch was enjoyed by all. Lloyd Markell, Sam Franklin and Carol Hitchler were guests. Ms. Hitchler, activity director of the Rainbow Senior Center, was the guest speaker. She was instrumental in providing outside
activities to the RSC members during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was in charge of planning drive-thru lunch meals, arts and crafts, music, birthday celebrations, entertainment, games and many other activities. Members mourned the passing of Barbara Christensen, George Majirus, Martha Eubanks, Mary Louise Uecker, Juanita Jones, Elizabeth Markell, Jackie Decker and Ruby Schwann. Donations will be made in their memory to the Retirement Home. Welcomed as new junior members were Conrad Urbanczyk, Jackson Laudadio, Tanner and

Prinz Solms will meet Aug. 8 at community center BULVERDE – Prinz Solms Lodge will meet Sunday, Aug. 8, at 5 p.m. at the Bulverde Community Center. Members enjoyed a barbecue dinner with sides and homemade cupcakes at the July meeting. A report on the mini-camp session was made by Kate Gourley. Kate said she enjoyed swimming, volleyball, crafts and making new friends. Several junior members have attended Camp this year. One junior member is returning as a counselor-in-training. Dunn entertains at Deanville DEANVILLE – A night of dancing was enjoyed as Gary P. Nunn performed for a packed house at the Deanville Dance Hall on June 26. Nunn is a supporter of Texas Dance Hall Preservation Inc. The show, which was scheduled for last year had to be cancelled, so Deanville Lodge was grateful that the show was rescheduled for this year and was a great success. At the regular meeting on June 27, the final Fourth of July
activities were planned. Morgan Becka, a candidate in the 2021 Burleson County Fair Queen’s Contest, is being sponsored by Deanville Lodge and the Frenstat 4-H. Morgan expressed her appreciation to the lodge for its sponsorship. Deanville Lodge members observed a moment of silence in memory of Glenn Faust. Glenn passed away May 29. Twin Sisters Lodge to feature float in parade TWIN SISTERS – At the June 6 meeting of Twin Sisters Lodge, President Marcus Ethridge welcomed guests, Board Member David Noak, his friend Theresa Garlin and Courtney and Cynthia Bagsley. The lodge will enter the Hermann Sons Life float in the Blanco County Parade in Johnson City on Saturday, Aug. 21. Members were encouraged to support the parade by riding on the float (bring lawn chairs), helping set up or take down the float, walking beside the float to hand out Hermann Sons Life information or just watch the parade and cheer for Hermann Sons Life. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Set up begins at 7 a.m. and judging begins around 8:30 a.m. David Noak presented mem-

Steve Hartmann was unanimously selected as the 2021 Humanitarian of the Year. The award will be presented at the October meeting. President Ethridge read correspondence from the Home Office that included a thankyou for the donation to the Youth Camp in memory of Phil Hartmann. Everyone enjoyed a fried fish meal with all the trimmings. Thanks go to Steve and John Hartmann and their team and to all who brought sides and desserts. Harmonia Lodge celebrates 160th anniversary in July SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge celebrated its 160th anniversary on July 8. This was the lodge’s first meeting since February 2020.
