UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHARLOTTE SOUTH PARKING DECK
HEAPY provided an engineering assessment and MEP engineering design to the UNC Charlotte’s South Parking Deck elevator towers to address specific conditions that existed in many of the parking deck structures on campus.
The presence of moisture on the interior of the hoistways was a primary condition. Excessive or persistent moisture may result in on-going maintenance requirements, system downtime, and reduced service life for certain elevator system components. This is due to corrosion and other negative impact to the equipment. Six different parking structures were assessed.

The assessment provided engineering analysis of the underlying causes, as well as recommended modifications to the existing structures. The analysis proposed solutions to improve the ventilation and humidity levels in these areas to reduce the potential for condensation forming on critical elevator components. HEAPY was then retained to provide the engineering design of these HVAC modifications in the South Deck elevators.
In addition, the report included recommendations for future parking deck construction meant to reduce the potential occurrence of these same problems for future parking deck elevators.
