Ian Mather CEO
Welcome to all who have made the journey from Doncaster. Although results have not gone your way for a few games there is absolutely no doubt this will be a tough game. All runs come to an end sometime. Clearly I hope it is not today! Former Prime Minister, Harold Wilson once said: “A week is a long time in politics”. The same could be said for our week just gone. A historic win in Newcastle in the FA Cup, a win v Portsmouth in the Papa John’s Trophy and then a fantastic last minute win v Lincoln on Saturday. The Newcastle result will live long in the memory. This was such a good day for the 5,000 U’s fans who made it up the A1. Travelling on Saturday it was great to see so many U’s fans including the group I bumped into at the Blyth services. I was asked for a prediction and bravely said a win. It is great that we can dare to dream this season. Of course there will be downs as well as ups. That’s in the nature of football but everyone should enjoy the wins that give such magic moments. We now have a big game v Luton coming up on 5 February. It will be a sell-out and the South Habbin will be kept for home supporters. It promises to be a hard fought game. Before then we have another big match in
the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup. This Wednesday 19 January, our U18’s take on Leeds United at the Abbey. We have progressed well in the competition and this is a great opportunity to see our Academy players go up against Premier League youth opposition. The kick-off is at 7.00PM and prices are low at just £3.00 and £1.00. Do come if you can. The Papa John’s Quarter Final game vs Rotherham will be on Tuesday 25 January. I know many don’t like this competition and I have argued the case for it on the Under the Abbey Stand pod. Win and we are one game away from a trip to Wembley. If you can’t go it will be available on iFollow. Finally, you will have seen that we announced Alex Tunbridge as my successor as CEO this week. We had 222 applications for the job and there were a number of very strong candidates. We went through a detailed selection process. Alex is a great fit for us and he will join in April where we will work together for a few weeks before he takes over at the end of the season when I will return to the Board. For now, the focus is on Doncaster. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk
