MarkHeadBonner coach Last week was a historic one for our Football Club and to all who attended, supported and sent congratulatory messages, thank you. The Newcastle United game put us on a stage we are not used to. Not only in the game, but in the build up and aftermath of the 90 minutes. I thought firstly that the players handled the atmosphere superbly well and came through a thorough test with flying colours. As important, we have seen and heard countless articles, interviews and podcasts since, in which the club has exuded pride, humility and good humour. These are important characteristics for anyone here and as we continue to develop a culture, ones that will drive us forward.
“The Newcastle United game put us on a stage we are not used to. Not only in the game, but in the build up and aftermath of the 90 minutes” Following the game with an excellent victory against Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy was the perfect next step and showed an excellent mentality and focus to avoid the potential ‘after the lord mayors show’ type event. On Saturday, the victory at Lincoln was arguably the most important of them all and one in which we rode our luck first half and had to defend the goal outstandingly well to get to half time level. The overall course of the game was that both teams created chances and counter attacked well. It did look to be heading towards a 0-0, but the late goal summed up the drama of the week, the spirit of the team and the connection to the supporters perfectly. We move now into a week of two home games. Both teams who have improved in recent weeks and having already drawn with them this season, we know the strengths of
the teams and are well aware of the demands of this league and the level we have to get to in order to be competitive. Also this week, the Under 18’s play Leeds United in the FA Youth Cup. This will be a brilliant occasion and a really tough game for us, but one which Tom, Jimmy and all the staff will have the players well prepared for. We look forward to the challenge of the game and hope that many of you can come and support the players for what is a big night for them. Finally, having been highlighted that last weekend was my 100th game leading the team, may I thank everyone for their kind words and the support I have received on all sides since taking on the role. I really am grateful and delighted to play a part in this chapter in our history. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk
