Cambridge United v Doncaster Rovers

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Well it’s been over a fortnight since the Pompey farce. That took a bit of getting over I must say, although events the following weekend did help! Welcome again to Doncaster Rovers, who are having a tough season to date, nine points adrift of the safety zone prior to the weekend’s fixtures. It is a shame to see our former star right back Kyle Knoyle having a tough time of it. As well as a relegation battle, he has had a tough start injury-wise and made only six appearances. It’s time for another little wander down Cut Throat Lane and we are going back 30 years to this day in 1992 and the fabulous season which ultimately ended in heartbreak at Filbert Street. The Mariners from Blundell Park were our visitors that afternoon. We were in the grips of cup fever having knocked out Coventry City in a Third Round replay during in front of 9,876. Glenn Hoddle’s Swindon Town were due up next at the Abbey a week later. Let’s hope this year’s run fares better as we were well beaten by Swindon 3-0. The programme that day was the standard

1991-92 fare with Fujitsu plastered all over it. The match sponsors that day were Sauciers Hi-Fi, based in Market Street. Does anybody remember them? The player sponsorship page is interesting as one outfit - Hi Q International - appear to be sponsoring absolutely nobody! The Grimsby line up contains some familiar names, not least ‘keeper Steve Sherwood. Famous for his Wembley final appearance in 1984 for Watford when he was bullied rather by one Andy Gray. Shockingly, no red socks for the Mariners in 1991-92. Sanity did not in fact return until 2004, although red flecks did attempt a return in the intervening years. In ‘Around the ground’, the roster of live bands appearing in the Supporters’ Club made me chuckle. They are probably still there to this day! I suppose I must mention the result that day – 0-1 to the visitors in front of nearly 6,100 fans. Enjoy the game. ■
