On December 20, 2003, a group of Bay Harbor property owners, business owners and employees came together to begin discussions on charitable activities in Northern Michigan. They talked about significant contributions already made in Northern Michigan by Bay Harbor Company and generous individuals within the Bay Harbor community, and addressed their desire to channel such charitable efforts through one entity â€“ the Bay Harbor Foundation. From these discussions, the Foundation would be formed as an independent nonprofit organization with a mission to provide assistance to nonprofit health and human service organizations, as well as educational, cultural, and environmental organizations in Northern Michigan. The goal for the Bay Harbor Foundation was ambitious â€“ to bring the vision of the Bay Harbor community to the world of philanthropy. Just as there is beauty and value in the reclaimed land on which the community is built, there is something special in the caring nature of the residents. Reminiscent of the former cement plant where Bay Harbor is now located, the Board of Directors of the Bay Harbor Foundation believed that they could build a solid and successful Foundation, with financial resources that would benefit the greater northern Michigan community in many ways. Fifteen years later, the Foundation is fast approaching $3,000,000 in funds distributed through grants to 108 area nonprofit organizations. In addition to providing grants, the Foundation has a Scholar Program, which has provided 286 college scholarships to assist employees who work within Bay Harbor, as well as their children or their grandchildren in achieving the dream of a college education. Now, the Foundation is expanding its educational endeavors to create a scholarship program to assist adults in obtaining vocational certification and training. This program will help hardworking members of our community to create a better life for themselves and their families by competing for jobs that earn a salary greater than minimum wage without having to leave the area, and at the same time meet the employment needs of Emmet County and beyond. One of the ways that the Foundation raises funds to assist the organizations they serve is through events. One recent event was the Bay Harbor Community Dinner, held August 30, 2018, on Main Street in the Village at Bay Harbor. The Foundation dedicated the funds raised at this event to four very deserving nonprofit organizations serving the immediate needs of the Little Traverse Bay community: The Manna Food Project, McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, the Nehemiah Project Homeless Shelter, and the Christ Child Society of Northern Michigan. To help draw attention to the needs of the community, the Foundation worked with Guinness World Records to create a new World Record for the Most People Breaking Bread. In order to create the new record, the event had to have many layers. The food for the four-course meal had to be locally grown

and raised within 60 miles of Bay Harbor, with the exception of salt, pepper and salad oil. All of the dinnerware had to be biodegradable within 150 days, and the Foundation worked closely with Emmet County Recycling to ensure that all waste was recycled or composted. The bread for the World Record attempt had to be broken in 10 seconds by guests sitting across from one another, and in accordance with Guinness’ requirements, none of it as wasted. Many businesses donated to the event, from local family farms to the generous Bay Harbor restaurants that provided their time and expertise to prepare and serve the dinner. The Inn at Bay Harbor prepared the salad, which was plated by the staff at Main Street Market, and the Bay Harbor Yacht Club not only prepared the main course of barbecue ribs and chicken, potatoes and corn, but served it to all 328 guests within 12 minutes. The event stretched for 300 feet down the main street of the Village at Bay Harbor. It was a huge effort, requiring the help of many dedicated volunteers and supporters, but in the end, the Bay Harbor Community Dinner was a success. The Foundation not only achieved a new World Record for the Most People Breaking Bread with 328 participants, but also drew attention to the urgent need for food, shelter, and medical care provided to those in need in the Little Traverse Bay community provided by the four organizations that benefited from the event. One out of four children in Emmet and Charlevoix County is compromised by hunger, and the Manna Food Project, which provided the volunteers for the event, works every day to assist these children and their families by offering supplemental food through their food pantry and the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Affordable housing is increasingly hard to find in the Little Traverse Bay Region, and when the busy summer seasons ends it’s not uncommon for low-wage, seasonal workers to find themselves unable to pay their rent. Sometimes individuals and families, already barely making ends meet, find themselves facing homelessness. The Nehemiah Project provides these area residents with temporary shelter during difficult times. In addition to providing shelter for men at the Nehemiah House, they also help keep families together by providing shelter for women and children at their Mary Margaret House. Their work is particularly important, as the Nehemiah House and the Mary Margaret House are the only homeless shelters in the area. For those already struggling to provide food and shelter for their families, an unexpected medical crisis can be doubly devastating, as not only are family members faced with a loved one’s serious illness, but also the financial hardship that can come along with it. McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation’s Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund provides aid to families with children who require urgent specialized medical care out of the area. By providing assistance with medications, meals, fuel, and lodging, the Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund relieves some of the incredible burdens a serious illness places on these families. The Christ Child Society of Northern Michigan further supports children in need by providing clothes, toiletries, and school supplies to children in foster care, or whose families are struggling to make ends meet. Providing these simple items to children in tough situations not only fulfills their basic needs but also provides them with a sense of normalcy when it is most needed. Through funds raised at events such as the Bay Harbor Community Dinner, the Bay Harbor Vintage Car and Boat Show, the Bay Harbor-Boyne Pro-Am Charity Golf Tournament, and others, the Bay Harbor Foundation is able to support these organizations and many, many more. Over the years, the Bay Harbor Foundation, and the Bay Harbor community have made a real difference in the lives of individuals and families in need in Northern Michigan. “The past fifteen years would not have been possible without the generous and dedicated community of donors and volunteers that have contributed money, time and talent to help us pursue our mission. You are the reason that we have been able to change the lives of so many people in the Little Traverse Bay Region. We want to thank everyone for all that they have done to make everything that we do possible,” says Bay Harbor Foundation Executive Director Candace Fitzsimons. Bay Harbor will always be more than just a destination on the map, and the Bay Harbor Foundation exists to ensure that the Bay Harbor legacy will be one of vision and goodwill for generations to come.

With over 36 years in business, the story of Sturgeon River is a good one. Sturgeon River Pottery was founded by Karen and Steve Andrews in 1980 in Wolverine, approximately 25 miles east of Petoskey. Karen and Steve began with a studio on the banks of the Sturgeon River. It wasn’t long before Karen and Steve opened the first Sturgeon River Pottery store on Main Street in Wolverine. Originally a gas station, the building served as studio, gallery, and workshop. After a short time, the shop was relocated to Bay Shore, Michigan, five miles west of Petoskey. The store added products including locally made candles and gifts. As the following for Sturgeon River Pottery continued to grow, the store once again outgrew its home. In 1984, Sturgeon River Pottery moved to its current location across from Bay Harbor, where they remain today. Over the years Sturgeon River Pottery has expanded to become the icon it is today. With over four acres of garden decor, pottery, Petoskey stones, wild bird supplies, Adirondack furniture, and other treasures, Sturgeon River is an annual stop for many visitors to Northern Michigan.
