Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Last month we enjoyed a talk by Matt Long (of Monks Eleigh) who took us through bulb planting for Spring colour. All very timely given it’s that time of year again to, if you have not started already, be thinking about starting the bulb planting process. As I write though, a bit more rain is needed to get them in the ground- I have found that a good quality stainless steel long-handled bulb planting tool is an excellent investment. Matt’s knowledge of the bulb world is impressive and we all learned a great deal about the different varieties on offer, taking note of many keys tips for optimum results, such as the planting depth needed (deep planting for tulips should extend their useful life) and flowering times to prolong the colour show. We also learned that the bulb world is not immune to crime – some rare bulbs can be quite valuable (costing up to £1,000 or more each) and this can attract unwanted interest! Riverside bulbs have a great range on offer and their website is worth a visit as it helpfully provides pictures of the flowering result you should expect to see, together with essential information on flowering times and planting depth. Visit www.riversidebulbs.co.uk or call Matt and his team on 01449 741551. September’s competition was for the largest sunflower, the winner being an American giant variety measuring 30cms in diameter. This month’s photo shows the first three prize winners. Next meeting – Monday October 10th Continuing the planning theme for next year, at our October meeting we will be welcoming Rob Sheriff who is a renowned expert on dahlias. Why not come and join us to find out more about these stunningly colourful plants, and at about this time next year you could then be seeing the results of your new found knowledge! As usual our meeting is at the Hadleigh Town Hall starting at 7.30pm – refreshments included in the £3 entry fee (£1 for members). We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman
Gallows Hill Allotment Holders Association Many thanks to all the people who attended the annual Gallows Hill Allotment Holders afternoon tea party. A special thanks to the following companies for their fantastic support in giving raffle prizes: Adnams, Lindsey Barton, Fergusons Delicatessen, Maggies, Paddy & Scotts, MW Partridge and as always BGA Print for their colourful posters. Perfect weather, games for the children all in an ideal setting. A big thankyou for the organisers who made it all possible.
