The Summer Proms
The Great British Summer Proms, more formally known as the BBC Proms, is a long-standing and much-loved musical tradition that dates back to 1895. Founded by impresario Robert Newman and conductor Henry Wood, the Proms (short for “Promenade Concerts”) were designed to make music accessible to everyone, offering affordable tickets and an informal concert atmosphere.
Held primarily at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the series runs for eight weeks each summer and features a wide range of instrumental and choral music, showcasing world-class musicians and emerging talent alike. The season culminates in the famous Last Night of the Proms, a joyful, patriotic celebration marked by sing-alongs, flag-waving, and many iconic memorable pieces.
Over the years, the Proms have grown into a cherished national institution, symbolising both the rich musical heritage of Britain and its enduring love for live performance.
