As part of our 150 anniversary celebrations a piece of music has been commissioned from Canadian composer Sarah Quartel, who is described as ‘ one of Canada’s most internationally celebrated and widely performed living choral composers ’ . th

The piece adapts a text by Ralph Waldo Emerson, the 19 century American scholar and poet, originally titled ‘We thank thee’. The use of the refrain, ‘ we thank you ’ echoes the final words of the School Carmen (Mater, tibi gratias), in which we thank the school (the mother) for supporting, guiding and providing for us. The text, evocative of nature and spring, gives thanks for everything around us. This key message of gratitude is central to our 150 celebrations. th th

We Thank You

For flowers that bloom about our feet;

For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet; For song of bird, and hum of bee;

For all things fair we hear or see, We thank you!

For blue of stream and blue of sky; For pleasant shade of branches high; For fragrant air and cooling breeze;

For beauty of the blooming trees,

We thank you!

Words: Ralph Waldo Emerson (edited)

Music: Sarah Quartel
