FORMER Test umpire Darrell Hair has admitted stealing money from an off-licence where he worked. The 65-year-old Australian, one of the most controversial officials in the history of the game, stole more than AU$9,000 (£5,310) from the shop where he was employed between February and April this year, while he was suffering from a gambling addiction. During his umpiring career, Hair is best remembered for no-balling Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan during the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne in 1995 and punishing Pakistan for suspected ball-tampering against England at The Oval in 2006.
Following the incident, Pakistan responded by refusing to return to the field after the tea interval. Orange Court magistrate Michael Allen did not record a conviction but sentenced Hair to an 18-month good behaviour bond, noting that he had repaid the money. Hair’s solicitor, Andrew Rolfe, said: “My client has been in the public eye for many years and this is a bit of a fall for him, to find himself before the court in these circumstances. This is an aberration in the life of a man who, prior to this, had a lifetime of service to the community and to a sport that he loved.”
Broad public support for North American World Cup bid, poll finds
(REUTERS) - More than three-quarters of North American residents polled in a survey broadly support plans to host the 2026 World Cup, U.S. Soccer announced on Tuesday.
“There is no real opposition to speak of.” Jackson said there was 83 percent support for the bid in Mexico, 76 percent in Canada and 74 percent in the U.S. U.S. residents were most-

The Ipsos survey polled 1,000 residents in each of the United States, Mexico and Canada. The three countries are planning a joint bid for the 2026 World Cup, which will be the first to include 48 teams. The U.S. is slated to host the majority of matches. “One of main findings is really strong support people have to the idea of North America hosting (the World Cup),” Ipsos spokesman Chris Jackson said in a conference call.

Respondents particularly liked that the event would need minimal new infrastructure. “Our focus continues to be on working with our 32 host city candidates to present the most compelling, thorough and forward-looking proposal to FIFA,” John Kristick, exec-
utive director of the United Bid Committee said in a statement. “One of the strengths of our hosting concept is that we have ready-made stadiums and infrastructure prepared to stage the first 48-team FIFA World Cup.” Kristick added during the conference call that the final number of cities to host matches would be whittled down to around 12-to-16. He also said that the possible ousting of Sunil Gulati as U.S. Soccer Federation

MUMBAI, (Reuters) Opening batsman Murali Vijay returned to India’s squad for the first two tests against Sri Lanka next month after missing the matches against the same opponents earlier this year with a wrist injury. The 33-year-old righthander underwent surgery in England following the four-test series against Australia at the beginning of the year and missed India’s 3-0 victory in Sri Lanka in July-August.
and at some point of time, the rotation policy that we’re following will also apply to the captain. “We’re also monitoring his workload - he’s been playing continuously right from the IPL. We need to give him a break and we will consider after the Test series.” The Indian selectors also named the squad for the three Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand with batsman Shreyas Iyer and paceman Mohammed Siraj the new faces.

The world’s top-ranked Test side will have Vijay and KL Rahul back at the top of the batting order while Shikhar Dhawan will be the reserve opener in the 16-man squad. Left-handed opener Abhinav Mukund missed out from the squad that toured Sri Lanka. Kolkata’s Eden Gardens will host the opening match of the three-Test series from Nov. 16 with the second and third tests in Nagpur and Delhi. Talismanic batsman Virat Kohli will continue to lead the side but his workload is being monitored, India’s chairman of selectors MSK Prasad said. India will also play three one-day internationals and the same number of T20s against Sri Lanka. “With regard to Virat Kohli there has been some speculation that he’s going to be rested for the whole of Sri Lanka series,” Prasad told reporters on Monday. ”It’s not right.
