Test cricket is still the preferred format for fans: MCC DESPITE the rising popularity of limited-over formats and the rise in viewership of Twenty20 Leagues, Test cricket still remains the preferred format for the fans, the MCC World Cricket Committee announced yesterday. MCC conducted a survey in more than 100 countries and found that over 86 per cent of fans placed Test cricket ahead of one-day or T20 cricket. The committee, after its annual meeting in Bengaluru, announced that more than 13 000 fans were contacted in the survey with the majority of them from England, India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. One of the key factors resulting in the rise of popularity was the away-series wins by teams in the last year. New Zealand’s win against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, England’s win in Sri Lanka, India’s win in Australia and the Sri Lankan whitewash on South African soil have made for gripping viewing. “What we want to make sure is that Test cricket is a priority for every single country. I was staggered by the statistics - which is great that there is interest in there. I like that because I thought it wasn’t that popular,” Shane Warne, who was attending his first meeting after being elected last year, told Cricbuzz. “It’s now how we get the people to attend the games. It’s about how can we better the in-stadium experiences, the pricing of the tickets, how can we get the families involved - all those sorts of things. For India, maybe try Day-Night Tests here. While the Dukes ball is the preferred one in England and in the Caribbean, a lot of countries - including Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - prefer using the Kookaburra ball while the SG ball is used in India. Kohli, during India’s Test series in England, had suggested the Dukes ball was most suitable for the longest format. “The Dukes ball, I think, is the most suited ball for Test cricket. If there’s a situation I would vouch for that to be used all over the world because of the consistency of the ball and how the bowlers are in the game at any stage ... even the spinners, because the seam is so hard and upright,” he had said. “What we discussed was now that we have the ICC

Gonsalves backs Skerritt, Shallow as `very good candidates’ for CWI leadership BRIDGETOWN, Barbados,(CMC) – Outspoken St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, has labelled Ricky Skerritt and Dr Kishore Shallow as “two very good candidates”, in reaction to news the duo will be contesting the top posts in Cricket West Indies (CWI) presidential elections later this month. Skerritt, a former Cabinet minister in St Kitts, will be seeking to topple incumbent CWI president Dave Cameron while Shallow, the president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, will be up against Emmanuel Nathan for the vice-presidency. Gonsalves, the chairman of the CARICOM subcommittee on cricket, said Skerritt and Shallow were “modern Caribbean personalities steeped within our Caribbean civilisation”, and possessed the ideas to take West Indies cricket forward. “Well, (neither) I nor the people of the region have a vote. It’s an indirect election of a kind which ought to change. Even the people in cricket are saying this,” Gonsalves told CMC Sports. We are seeing two very good candidates in Mr Ricky Skerritt and Dr Kishore Shallow. Both of them are much steeped in cricket historically, they are concerned about the finances in cricket, cricket development, have a very good approach to people, engaging, listen and want to be on good terms with all the governments and fans.” He continued: “They have very progressive ideas on how West Indies cricket should move forward in the plan they have put out. These are serious people – modern Caribbean personalities, steeped within our Caribbean civilisation.” Skerritt and Shallow have advanced a 10-point Cricket First Plan which among other objectives, places renewed focus on cricket at the grassroots level, the modernisation of coaching education and enhancement of the current franchise system. They have also signalled their intention to improve transparency in CWI and rectify relations with players and regional fans. The duo have already gained support from the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and the

Gonsalves has been one of three Caribbean prime ministers, along with Grenada’s Dr Keith Mitchell and Trinidad and Tobago’s Dr. Keith Rowley, who have been critical of Cameron during his controversial tenure. Ahead of his bid for a second term back in 2015, Gonsalves slammed the Jamaican’s leadership of CWI as “extremely poor” and suggested he step down. However, Cameron went on to defeat legendary former West Indies fast bowler, Joel Garner, before securing a third straight term in 2017 when he was re-elected unopposed. The three prime ministers have called for specific governance change in West Indies cricket administration, in keeping with a CARICOM-commissioned Governance Review Report, which proposed a radical overhaul of the board structure. Their current push is to replicate the successful legal argument and case in India involving the Lodha Commission versus the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI), as to why sports organisations cannot be considered private bodies while conducting a public function. CWI is currently a private organisation registered in the British Virgin Islands and the Cameron-led body has consistently pushed back against government involvement in its affairs.
